Annual report 2015
Student Chapter Orléans Université
During this first year of existence of the Student Chapter Orléans Université (SCOU), two lectures had
been organized for our members and a fieldtrip to visit the Kaolin deposit of Échassière and the rare metal
pegmatites of Ambasac. We would like to thank our academic advisor, Dr. Johann Tuduri and industry
advisor, Dr. Frank Valli (Newmont) and the SEG for their support during this year.

Conference participation
Eight of our members had the chance to participate to the 2015 PDAC in Toronto. They had been able to
discuss with professionals of the mineral resources sectors (from the exploration to the extraction) but
also with other professions connected to this industry.
Lectures:
During the year, two lectures had been organized. Open to everybody who would like to participate, each
lecture had been followed by more than 30 persons. After the lecture all the student member are invited
for a Drink to discuss with the lecturer. A description of lectures is available below.

The geology of Greenland: which resources for the future,
Dr. Johann Tuduri (BRGM)
22/01/2015, duration : 1h30
Dr. Johann Tuduri is the Deputy manager of the BRGM school. His fields of research focus in the ore
formation at the transition between magmatic-hydrothermal processes and their structural controls. He
also works of the REE metallogeny and economy, in which the lecture was focus on.
Johann Tuduri gave a quick but complete introduction to the complex geology of Greenland and
the geology of REE deposits. The lecture then focused on the South West part of greenland, where the
Gardar igneous province host the Ilimaussaq alkaline intrusion, and the U/REE Kvanefjeld deposit (6,5
Mt of TREO inferred and indicated resources, Greenland mineral and energy LTD). After the geological
aspect of the area and the deposit, the lecturer presented the world economic aspect of the REE market,
and introduced to the assembly the ASTER project (systemic analysis of the rare earth element in Europe,
flux and reserve). The principal aim of this project is to understand and quantify the consumption and
reserve of REE from their extraction to their recycling in Europe (including Greenland) by modeling flux
and stock in EU and at its borders.
After few questions, members of the student chapter had been invited to take a drink with the lecturer and
discuss about the lecture.
An overview of the BIF and Mn associated deposits, from the ore forming to
their exploration
Dr. Beate Orberger (ERAMET RESEARCH)
23/02/2015 duration: 2h30.
Dr. Beate Orberger is an expert economic geologist at ERAMET RESEARCH. Her expertise focuses in
the project initiation and realization for superficial and magmatic ore deposits. She is also involved in the
development of innovative solutions for the exploration, mining and geometallurgical processing.
After an introduction of general aspects of those deposits, the market for those commodities and their use
in the everyday life, a display of all BIF characteristics had been made. Their mineralogy and
geochemical singularities had been enunciated, illustrated by examples as Minas Gerais (Brazil) or
Khumani iron mine (South Africa). To conclude this part of the lecture, the model of formation had been
presented and its modern analogue, the Kyushu, Aso volcano (Japan).
The second part of the lecture focused on the carbonate-manganese deposits, their geological
characteristics. The lecturer presented the geodynamic and the stratigraphy of the Franceville basin
(Gabon) and the ERAMET exploration work in this area. After an overview of the Mn-carbonates ore, its
complex mineralogy, textures and genesis, the lecture presented how those aspects are taken in account
during the design of the mining process.
The last part had concerned the oxidized manganese ore of Moanda (Gabon) where ERAMET extract 4,5
to 5 Mt/an with a grade between 35-45% Mn, Dr. Beate Orberger present the geological setting of the
bangombé plateau, the possible ore genesis and the mining process.

Fieldtrip report
Visit of the Rare metal pegmatite of Ambasac and the Echassière kaolin
deposit.
Trip summary and Benefits to Students:
Six students from the SCOU student chapter participated in three-day trip to the North French Massif
Central (26- 28 June 2015). The trip take place in three steps: (i) a visit of Kaolin exploitation of
Echassière (Imerys), it included a presentation by the exploitation chef (D. Duhamet) about the kaolin
geology, industry, process and economy, a visit of Kaolin quarry of Echassière and a visit of ore
processing plant; (ii) a visit of the Museum of Mineralogy of Ambazac; (iii) a visit in three old pegmatites
exploration galleries with J. Tuduri (French Geological Survey) to understand the complexity of the
spatial expanse of these bodies and discern different guides for this ore kind. Students were able to learn
about:
- Industrial minerals genesis, operating methods and kaolin treatment process,
- Mineralogy of rare element minerals,
- Textures, mineralogy and genesis models of different pegmatite types and their exploration
guide.

Future plan
We plan a lecture with the Professor Eric Marcoux (Orléans University) who will present
“History and heritage of French mines. And now?” and at least two other title “Gold mineralizations in
the Carlin Trend” and “An hydrothermal system in activity: the Yellowstone”.
Those two last will prepare the fieldtrip currently in organization. The aim of this trip is to
introduce to participating members the basin and range area, its geology and associated ore deposit. The
trip will be organized in two parts. The first one will focus on the visit of the porphyry copper deposit of
Bingham, own by Rio Tinto and the Ruby Mountain. This part of the fieldtrip will end with the study of
the Carling Trend in association with Newmont Mining and Long Canyon gold mine. The second part of
the fieldtrip will focus on hydrothermal alterations associated with volcanic activity and will be illustrate
by the visit of the Yellowstone national park and the Berkeley pit. This trip will be reserved for Master
students and PhDs.

Accounting for Stewart R. Wallace Fund
To realize our three-day field trip we received US$ 400 from the Stewart R. Wallace Fund. These founds
was used in totality for accommodations, gasoline and museum pass. We resumed below all spending.
