The Humane Society Flea
Market is located on Warehouse Road near the Oak
Ridge Animal Shelter, and
across the street from Atlas
Van Lines.
Hours of operation are:
Every Saturday • 10 am - 1 pm
Over the Christmas holidays, the flea market was cleaned
up, painted and restocked. We have lots of new goodies, so
come on in and check us out!!
As always, all proceeds benefit the Anderson County spay
and neuter program.
The flea market is manned by an all volunteer staff, and all
merchandise sold comes to us as donations from the community. Donations are always welcomed and will be accepted on Saturdays during operating hours with the exception of large items of furniture. We simply don’t have
room.

Membership Drives
We would like to thank everyone for their donations of items for our 2 Membership Drives.
We would also like to give an EXTRA SPECIAL THANK YOU to Chris Paddleford of
the Gray Goose Emporium on Market Street in
Clinton for allowing us to set up on her property during the Clinton Antique Fair.
Wal-Mart, Oak Ridge
Our membership drive at Wal-Mart was quite
an experience. We had a little rain, but for the
most part the day was great.
We talked to several people, gave out membership forms, newsletters, lots of info, goodies
that were donated and biscuits to several passing dogs!
We collected a total of $129.75.

The Humane Society meets the fourth Tuesday of every
month, at the United Way Building in Oak Ridge. Please

courses in the animal science department have expanded my
understanding of the role veterinarians and all animal science
professionals play in improving and amplifying our understanding of live stock and companion animal species. The curriculum
places a strong emphasis on improving the general health of
animals in order to enrich and progress Tennessee’s animal
agricultural economy. In addition to pursuing a degree at the
University of Tennessee I also work as a veterinary technician at
an Anderson county animal clinic. My responsibilities at the
clinic include assisting the veterinarian in exams, preparation
and assistance of surgery, communication with clients concerning their pet’s health and treatment, and many other responsibilities. My interactions with the highly trained professionals during
my clinical experiences have truly solidified my chosen career
path and exemplified the obligations of a veterinarian to society.
This role reaches far beyond improving the general health of
animals, and extends into being a source of information and
compassionate support for the public. The leadership, professionalism, and skill exhibited by my colleagues and academic
mentors continually inspire and enhance my own aspirations for
my career. The field of veterinary medicine is continually
challenging and rewarding, but the role a veterinarian serves in
educating, informing, and guiding the public through animal
health and welfare issues is a responsibility that truly attracts me
to this field. I also find the communication barrier between
veterinarian and patient to be a captivating challenge that forces
the health care provider to understand and interpret the patient’s
symptoms on a nonverbal basis. I am an upcoming senior at the
university this fall, and I am currently working on my application for veterinary school in order to enroll in the fall of 2009. I
hope to complete a post- doctoral residency after obtaining my
veterinary degree, in order to become a board certified specialist
in small animal surgery. However, I hope that my future experiences and educational endeavors will allow me to narrow and
refine my decisions concerning a residency program of interest.
Obviously, I still have a lot of experiences and school left until I
will reach my career goals but the knowledge that I am gaining
at my current job and educational program are indispensable and
a continuous source of motivation. The most important thing
that I have learned throughout my experiences is that animal
health professionals play a key role in the general health of
animal populations, but the most important component is the
public and the critical purpose they serve in ensuring the animal
population’s and consequently society’s health and well being.
