“The sun was warm but the wind was chill.
You know how it is with an April day.
When the sun is out and the wind is still,
You’re one month on in the middle of May.
But if you so much as dare to speak,
a cloud come over the sunlit arch,
And wind comes off a frozen peak,
And you’re two months back in
- Robert Frost
the middle of March.”
Basement
Blow Out Sale
We will have a one day sale on Saturday,
April 30th from 9 am - 3 pm,
BASEMENT
ONLY.
There is lots of
“stuff” to sell at
great prices. Bring your
family and friends!
Raised Gardens
April is National Garden Month
There are 16 raised garden
beds behind the maintenance barn available for
Ridge Oak residents.
Residents are responsible
for planting and maintaining their garden during the
season. At the end of the
season you must clean out
your garden.
If you are interested in
planting a garden, sign up by Friday,
April 15th. If there are more than 16
residents interested in a raised garden
bed then there will be a lottery. You will
be notified in writing by the end of the
month if you have been assigned a
garden or if you are on a wait list.
So that everyone has an opportunity to
Membership Details
garden, the lottery gives no preference to
those who have planted beds in previous
years. One garden per household will be
assigned until we see how many beds are
requested and assigned. If you do not
want the assigned bed, then it will be
offered to another resident on the
waiting list.
Regular senior membership is $55 a month;
$660 per year. Residents at Ridge Oak
pay only $5 a month. Payment of $60 for
the full year is due when you join. This is
a substantial savings for our residents.
The YMCA does not offer a monthly
“pay as you go” option, because of the
substantially discounted memberships.
Each year there are unattended gardens.
Electronics
Do not sign up for a garden if you are
going to be traveling this summer or if
you will not be able to do the work. Be
considerate as there are other residents
waiting to have a garden. Think about
sharing your garden with a friend…share
the work, share the produce! Unattended
gardens will be re-assigned to people
waiting!
YMCA and You
Somerset County
has a NEW location
for the drop off of
old electronic
equipment which
can NEVER be put
into the household
trash or dumpsters. Items like computers,
TV’s, printers, book readers, FAX machines, telephones and monitors must be
taken to the following locations:
Many of our residents have taken advan-
tage of the wonderful discount; only $5
a month! We would like to help with
transportation. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting Tuesday, April 5th, our bus
will leave at 9 am to drop off interested
residents at the Y. The bus will then
return at about 11 am for pick-up. This is
a pilot program; we will evaluate interest
and use and see how many residents take
advantage of the transportation.
2
Weekdays from 7:30 am - 3 pm, North
County Public Works Facility, 2411
Chimney Rock Road, Bridgewater or
South County Public Works Garage,
410 Roycefield Road, Hillsborough.
Weekend drop offs are limited to South
County Public Works Garage on specific
Saturdays from 8 am – 2 pm; April 2nd,
May 7th, June 4th, August 6th, September
10th, October 1st, November 5th and
December 3rd.
Let’s Aim for 100%
Each year we remind you of the import-
ance of filling out your Medical Fact Sheet.
These sheets are extremely important for
your well-being when you have an emergency and the rescue squad comes to help
you. If you have a Medical Fact Sheet
and it hasn’t been updated in the last
year or two, please take time to do it now.
We have blank sheets in the office.
As a special incentive, in April make an
appointment with Karen or Elaine to
have your Medical Fact Sheet reviewed
and updated and you will get a special
treat AND your name will be put into a
drawing for a $25 VISA gift card! Two
$25 prizes will be awarded. Bring your
updated Medical Fact Sheet to the
office, so we can verify that it contains
ALL your current medications, allergies
and medical conditions. If you need help
filling out the form, Karen will be able to
help you. Don’t delay—do it today!
A New Adoptee
Sadly, our Hearts for Honduras adopted
child Kevin Vasquedano has left school.
Apparently this is not uncommon, as
many families move away in search of a
better life or a child needs to leave
school to make money for their family.
Please keep Kevin and his family in your
prayers.
Our new adopted child is Henrry Vijil.
He is in second grade and wants to be a
mason when he grows up. His father sells
vegetables and his mother is a “maid”.
He has three brothers and his favorite
subject in school is computers and he
loves doing puzzles. Henry’s photo and
his Easter drawing are posted on each
bulletin board so you can see the newest
member of our Ridge Oak family. Please
keep Henry in your thoughts and prayers.
If You See Something,
Say Something
Many of you have complained
about people driving
too fast in the Ridge
Oak complex. If you
see someone
speeding take note
of their license plate
number and report it to the office. We
will follow up accordingly. If you see
someone “dumping” in our dumpsters get
their license plate number! Don’t just
complain—it is not productive. Speak
up, get some details and be part of the
solution.
More Blue Bins
Everyone is doing such a good job
recycling that we have added a 3rd blue
recycling bin next to the dumpsters for
you to dispose of rinsed cans, bottles and
3
plastic containers. In July we will have
recycling picked up at dumpsters twice a
week. This is a “good thing” as they say.
Remember, that folded cardboard goes
into the Village 1-11 laundry room
closets, in V12 into the closet behind
the mailboxes and in Villages 1A and
9A behind the bins on the front patio.

Trash Talk
Are you having difficulty
getting your trash and
recycling out to the
dumpster areas? Ridge Oak
offers a “Trash Pick- Up”
service for residents in
need. Bags are supplied
by Ridge Oak and the
cost is $2.50 per pick up. If interested
contact Elaine at the office for an
assessment. This service is limited to
residents who have a prolonged illness or
mobility limitation making trash disposal
too difficult.
Scam Warning
New Jersey Division of Taxation warns
taxpayers to be aware that scammers may
be cloning or spoofing the Division’s call
center number, (609) 292-6400. These
scammers are calling New Jersey citizens
asking if they have filed a New Jersey
personal income tax return.
The Division of Taxation states that it
will never call a taxpayer from this number, nor will its representatives call taxpayers to question if they have submitted
an income tax return.Same with the
IRS. They will NEVER call you at home.
We have had residents report that they
have gotten calls from people claiming
to be IRS agents demanding payments.
Beware and be smart. Do not answer
calls or e-mails from anyone you don’t
know!
Magic Shop
Magic Shop, a full service hair salon
open for men and women, is open on
Fridays. Stop by or call for an appointment with the new stylist, Sabrina. Call
908-221-1222 to make an appointment
to have your hair done and if you need a
ride on the transporter. Residents
are billed for salon
services by the Ridge
Oak office at the end of
each month. Please tip
the stylist after each
service.
From the Executive Director
Bonnie
We do not allow residents to feed the
birds and animals. “Why” you may ask?
Well, we live right next door to the
Great Swamp! It is the perfect natural
habitat and feeding ground for our wildlife friends. While I am not a “bird hater”
as I have recently been called, food (seed
or table food) will attract unwanted
animals like squirrels, raccoons, rats,
mice, deer (carrying tics) and bear!
There are plenty of seeds and insects
for the birds and animals to eat in the
5
natural environment that surrounds us.
We do not need to invite them to our
doorway. Get a pair of binoculars and
look around you! There is plenty to see
and enjoy in the trees and in the fields.
Occupancy - Christine,
Patrice & Helen
Income Inclusions - Regular Cash
Contributions & Gifts
Does a family member or
friend not living in your
apartment pay any of your
bills such as rent, electricity,
telephone, cell phone, internet services or television/
cable expenses on a regular
basis? If you answered “yes” to
any of the above, as per HUD, you are
required to report it to Occupancy when
you come in for your annual recertification appointment.
Example: Your son or daughter pay for
your cell phone expense each month.
This would be included as income at
your annual recertification.
Example: A family member not residing
in the apartment gives you $250 a
month for groceries, toiletries and
clothing. You are required to report this
to Occupancy when you come in for
your annual recertification appointment.
6
Example: You receive a dental bill for
$2,500. Your son or daughter pays for the
dental bill. You cannot use this as a
medical expense since you did not pay
the bill. Since the $2,500 was used for
medical, it will not be counted as income.
If you are unsure as to whether something
will be be counted as income, please call
the office at 908-221-0266 and speak to
Christine.

Dealing with Loneliness
Loneliness can occur in those who have
retired and find themselves at a loss as to
what to do. Here are some suggestions to
cure such loneliness:
Keep busy – Do with eagerness whatever
is in front of you to do: write letters, visit
people, fix something that needs to be
fixed, take up a hobby, become fascinated by everything around you. Keep
busily involved in everything that gets
your attention—soon little things can
grow into big significant projects.
Involve yourself – in community affairs.
Many times when people
retire they find
themselves in a
burned-out condition.
This can set up a person
to be lonely. And, if a
person continues to be a
hermit, there will come a time when an
incurable loneliness will be the order of
the day.
Help others – Look for and strive to cure
the loneliness of someone else—it will
cure your own. There are many people
who need help—find them and help
them.
Avoid escapes – such as day dreaming,
sleeping too much, and watching too
much TV. Dream magnificent goals for
the future and start to bring them about.
Too much sleep can be a powerful escape
mechanism.
Choose to be happy – Fight unhappiness
with a direct attack of the will—choose
to be happy in spite of the circumstances.
Fight depression by talking out your
problems. Join a group, talk to friends, a
counselor, or your pastor, and keep talking until you find yourself maintaining
an attitude of optimism.
Collect good thoughts – inspirational
thoughts, good jokes, meaningful poems,
and literary masterpieces. Read lots of
good books. Collect good thoughts to
share with those around you, and soon
others will search for your
companionship.
Join a social group – visit the Senior
Center regularly and meet new people.
You will find many individuals there who
are involved in social gatherings of
various types.
Commit yourself to
one or more groups
that you find of
interest.
Go to church –
Most churches care for their people and
treat everyone who attends like family.
Loneliness is often caused by wanting
people to do something for us. When we
do things for other people, we are never
lonely. Self-referenced thinking often
leads to a barrenness of spirit that breeds
discontent and loneliness. Think up,
think out, toward people, toward all the
exciting things of life—and avoid
thinking too much about yourself, and
the problem of loneliness will disappear.
Check your
FACT Sheets
Ridge Oak’s website
has a section called
“Good to Know”, which
contains fact sheets about
resources for seniors and other useful
information. We have added four new
fact sheets: Ear & Hearing Care Services,
Dental Care, Eye Care, and Food
Resources & Nutrition. If you have
access to a computer, you can download
and print these sheets. If not, you may
ask for them at the front desk.

From Wellness Nurse

Karen will take blood
pressures and discuss any
health concerns with
you on Thursday, April
21st at 12 noon in
Felmeth Hall. Residents are encouraged
to take advantage of this opportunity. If
you need to be seen at home, please call
Karen at the office to schedule a visit.
Spring is here!! Take a Walk!!
Now that the weather is getting nicer, it
is time to get outside and enjoy a walk!
Here are some facts from the CDC:
• Older adults, both male and female, can
benefit from regular physical activity.
• Physical activity need not be strenuous
to achieve health benefits.
• Older adults can obtain significant
health benefits with a moderate amount
of physical activity, preferably daily.
• Because risk of injury increases at high
levels of physical activity, care should be
taken not to engage in excessive amounts
of activity.
• Previously sedentary older adults who
begin physical activity programs should
start with short intervals of moderate
physical activity (5-10 minutes) and
gradually build up to the desired amount.
8
• Older adults should consult with a
physician before beginning a new
physical activity program.
Benefits of Physical Activity
• Helps maintain the ability to live
independently and reduces the risk of
falling and fracturing bones.
• Reduces the risk of dying from coronary
heart disease and of developing high blood
pressure, colon cancer, and diabetes.
• Can help reduce blood pressure in
some people with hypertension.
• Helps people with chronic, disabling
conditions improve their stamina and
muscle strength.
• Reduces symptoms of anxiety and
depression and fosters improvements in
mood and feelings of well-being.
• Helps maintain healthy bones, muscles,
and joints.
• Helps control joint swelling and pain
associated with arthritis.
Luckily for us here at Ridge Oak our
community setting is ideal for walking!
Whether you take part in our planned
walking activities or go at your own
pace, get out, enjoy the spring weather
and walk!

Care Fund
Care Fund was established with donations
from sponsor churches, local organizations,
residents and their families in order to
help Ridge Oak residents remain independent. Care Fund subsidizes meals,
personal care, Adult Day Care Services,
and Persys Medical Alert Systems. No
Care Fund dollars are used for parties,
recreation events, or administrative
expenses! Many thanks to the people
who have made recent donations to the
Care Fund.
PERSYS Units
PERSYS (Personal Emergency Response
System) is an electronic device that lets
you summon help in an emergency. The
transmitter is worn around the neck or
wrist and sends a signal to the telephone.
When emergency help is needed, the
PERSYS user presses the button and
rescue squad, police and emergency
phone numbers are called. Units are
monitored by an alarm company. Our
units are owned by Ridge Oak, and
residents are billed for monitoring.
PERSYS units have truly been
“lifesavers” for those
who have had an
emergency and
cannot reach the
phone. Maintenance
staff is responsible for installing and
testing units. If you want to sign up for
this medical alert service, call Elaine at
the office to process the paperwork.
Units will be tested on Thursday, May
26th. If you will not be home, please
leave your pendant out so it can be
tested. It is important that all units are
working properly in case of emergency.
PERSYS bills are sent out quarterly.

142nd running of
the Kentucky Derby.
The party will start at
4 pm with the movie
Sea Biscuit followed by
post time at 6:34 pm. Residents can join
in the fun by wearing a Derby Hat,
placing a ‘fun bet’ and sipping a nonalcoholic mint julep. We ask that

The race is known in the United States
as “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in
Sports” or “The Fastest Two Minutes in
Sports” for its approximate duration, and
is also called “The Run for the Roses” for
the blanket of roses draped over the
winner.
The race began in 1875, the year that
