A message from the Mayor
Goderich was founded in 1827 by
William “Tiger” Dunlop. We are
named after Frederick John Robinson,
1st Viscount Goderich, who was British
Prime Minister at the time. Goderich
was officially incorporated in 1850.
Goderich is located on the eastern
shore of Lake Huron at the mouth of
the Maitland River. We have the largest
deep-water Harbour on the Ontario side
of the Lake. Our waterfront is unique
in that we have a mix
of both Industrial and
Recreational activities
going on throughout
the year.
Although very well
known for our beautiful
sunsets, Goderich has
so much more to offer,
not only for those who
live here, but also for
those who visit.
You will find us to
be a very friendly community, where
our residents are proud to be a part
of ongoing change as we continue to
better ourselves and move forward
following a devastating tornado that
ripped through our community in
August of 2011. We are a Town wellgrounded in tradition and history, and
yet are also open to opportunities that
come our way to make us the chosen
destination of visitors, businesses and
future residents.
On behalf of those who make Goderich
their home, all Members of Council
and our dedicated Team
of Town Employees, I
invite you to take the time
to get to know us. I also
invite you to visit some of
our many local attractions
including our Harbour
and three local Beaches
and Boardwalk, Historic
Downtown, Historic Gaol
and Museum.
Maybe take the time too,
to drop by Town Hall.
My door is always open…

welcome
Welcome to Goderich
The Port of Goderich - atop the bluffs
overlooking Lake Huron – is a beautiful
town on Ontario’s West Coast.
Nicknamed “Canada’s Prettiest Town”,
Goderich is world-renowned for its
breathtaking sunsets. You will often hear
that our little town of about 8,000 people is so nice, that the sun sets twice.
Proximity to the water and an abundance of parkland make Goderich a top
choice for recreation and leisure.
Our trails criss-cross and surround the
town, providing idylic views of nature
and heritage sites along the way.
Head downtown for the atmosphere and
a bevy of shops and restaurants in our
historic Square. Through hard work and
dedication, much has been rebuilt in the
downtown since the tornado of August,
2011. It may look a little different but
the charm is as strong as ever.
The streets still branch out from Courthouse Park and its brand new trees. The
Goderich Visitors Guide will help you
navigate through a year’s worth of community events and festivals and point
out the natural and cultural elements
that make Goderich unique.
If you have questions, visit Tourism Goderich at the corner of Victoria and Nelson
Streets, call 519-524-6600 or 1-800-280-7637, go to www.goderich.ca.

core, a 65 acre rural neighbourhood,
heralded by TV Ontario as the home of the
province’s most traditional Main Street and
named in Cottage Life as one of ten great
Canadian small towns to visit for a day
trip. The Downtown Goderich Business
Improvement Area is bordered by Nelson
St., Elgin St., Victoria St. and Waterloo
St. and was established as a Conservation
District in 2014, formally recognizing the
area’s historic value.
Downtown Goderich offers you a variety
of services; with more than 180 businesses,

theatre, a hotel and some charming B & Bs.
Free and accessible parking makes any visit
convenient.
In the center of our downtown you will find
the impressive Huron County Courthouse,
Court House Park and the Market Square.
The Market Square is simply referred to
these days as “The Square”.
The Square is a gem of Canadian heritage
architecture. Its octagonal shape and central
park offers a unique setting for the Saturday
morning farmers’ market. Downtown
Goderich is the place to find many of our
Towns’ well-loved special events. From
the annual Arts & Crafts Festival in July
to Winterfest activities in February, the
downtown core is where you can experience
the “pedestrian only” antique car show,
the summer evening concert series, the
Multicultural Festival, Family Movie Night,
Halloween “Spooktacular”, West Coast
Bluesfest, holiday parades and more.
As cultural centerpieces of the community,
the Goderich Little Theatre located in the
historic Livery building sponsors the Livery
Film Festival and the Goderich Little Theatre
productions.

a quiet interlude at the Carnegie Library; take
a stroll in the park with a printed guidebook
to 45 distinct species of trees planted or one
of the four Heritage walking tours, both
available at Tourism Goderich centre.
Downtown Goderich come soak up the
charm of our historic downtown core in the
heart of Huron County.
Courthouse Square
Four streets intersecting at right angles –
Victoria, Elgin, Waterloo and Nelson form
the outer edges of the downtown core with
the octagon in the centre, popularly known
as “The Square”
The octagonal core of the town; contains a
number of rich and architecturally significant historical buildings. The unique layout
of a circular roadway bounded by eight business blocks has an average of six connected
buildings on each block.
The design is attributed to John Galt, the
Canada Company’s first commissioner and
6 | Goderich Visitors’ Guide | 2015/16
Deputy Provincial Surveyor, John McDonald. They were inspired by the first century
B.C. planning concepts of Roman architect
Vitruvius. If you could see The Square and
eight outlying radial streets, from an aerial
view, it would remind you of the union jack
flag with primary streets aligned along the
points of the compass, East, West, North
and South.
Two lanes of traffic flow through downtown
and navigating the one way driving can be
tricky.
The outer lane is used mainly for turning
and parking, the inside for travelling around
the square.
Check to your left as well as to your right
when maneuvering around The Square. All
lane changes should be signaled. Pedestrians
cross from both sides and have the right of
way, so make sure to check to the left as well
as to the right when maneuvering around
The Square. Keep an eye out for pedestrians.!

Walt Disney’s Canadian Connection
By Steph Smith
Over the last five months, I have been
doing some research here and there in
to Walt Disney and his roots in Huron
County. During this time, I’ve come
across a lot of interesting information and
have had the opportunity to talk to a lot of
really helpful people, many of whom have
encouraged me to keep researching.
I met with Jenna Leifso, the archivist at the
Huron County Museum, to go through
some Disney archives to see what we could
find. Some of these documents were pulled
from ancestry.com and included passenger
and immigration lists, marriage records,
census records and voter lists. Some of this
information I was already familiar with,
but seeing these other documents helped
to confirm that the Disney family settled
in Huron County.
According to the passenger lists from Oct.
3, 1834, Arundel Elias Disney (Walt’s
great-grandfather), his older brother
Robert and their wives left Ireland for
New York, departing from Liverpool,
Great Britain on the ship New Jersey.
Both Elias and Robert eventually settle
in Ontario with their wives and children,
purchasing land in Huron County.
When they purchased land is difficult
to determine, but according to the 1842
Huron Assessment, Elias purchased 149
acres on lots 38 and 39 on the Maitland
Concession in Goderich Township. It was
here that he also built his sawmill, which
we have proof of as it is recorded in the
1842 Huron Assessment as one sawmill.
Robert purchased 93 acres on lots 36 and
37 on the Maitland Concession as well.
At age 24, Kepple Disney (Walt’s
grandfather) marries 18-year-old Mary J.
Richardson, another Irish immigrant, on
Mar. 18, 1858 in Huron County. Shortly
after their marriage, Kepple purchased 100
acres of land from the Crown just outside
of Bluevale in Morris Township. We have
proof that they lived here because Kepple,
Mary and their then two-year-old son Elias
(Walt’s father) appear in the 1861 Census
of Canada for the Township of Morris.
Kepple and his family are still there 10
years later because they appear again in the
census for 1871.
Children took Walt Disney’s presence calmly, until he drew a few swift circles on the blackboard. “Mickey Mouse,” they squealed and promptly surrounded the famed animal animator
as shown here. Walt’s father, Elias Disney, was born near Goderich and went to school in
the town.

our history
Creator of Mickey Mouse, Walt Disney, is
seen with Barbara Bradley, a pupil at Central
Public School in Goderich, during a visit to
the school where his father studied.
In my second column, I talked about
how Walt’s father Elias attended school
in Goderich as a boy at the Central Public
School, which now makes up part of the
Huron County Museum. This kind of
confused me because the family was
living outside of Bluevale, so why would
they send their children to Goderich
when there were schools around them
(ie: Bluevale Public School).
I asked Jenna what she thought and it
didn’t make sense to her either. She also
hadn’t come across any proof that Elias
attended the Central School. However,
Jenna dispelled the myth about the
Disney’s living in the “Disney House,”
located on 99 Lighthouse St. in Goderich,
by looking at the ownership records for
that property in the assessment rolls for
the town during their time in Huron
County.
At times, the two of us would work
together to get through a range of
10 | Goderich Visitors’ Guide | 2015/16
different documents, with so many
Disneys named Elias and Kepple, we
almost had to. One instance of this was
when we were going through school
records to see when Elias could have
possibly gone to the Central School in
Goderich. While Jenna was looking at
other records, she passed me an obscure
book that had no name or any sort of
identification to say which school it
belonged to, and said I could try taking
a look to see if I could find anything…
and I did.
I read through several pages filled with
messy lists of students, attendance
records and grades before I came across
a student list for January 1868 that had
“Kepple Disney” as the parent, and both
Elias Disney (who was eight years old)
and Robert Disney (who was six years
old) listed. This made us both pretty
excited, but there was one problem: we
still didn’t know what school the book
belonged to. How could we possibly
figure this one out? It seemed like we had
come so close, yet were so very far at the
same time.
After thinking about our next steps,
Jenna came up with the idea to look
through the assessment roll for Goderich
that corresponded with the year that
appeared in the unknown book, as there
was a chance they could have been there
at the time the assessment was done.
Sure enough, Kepple Disney appeared
on the January 1868 assessment, but
not at the “Disney House” address of
99 Lighthouse St. He and his family
were actually tenants of a house owned
by James Whitely located on Lot 275 in
St. David’s Ward – roughly the location
of the present-day Union Burger,
interesting.
To try to gather a timeline of when
the Disneys would have been living in
Goderich, Jenna compared the January
1868 assessment with list of voters for
the town. She found that they weren’t in
Goderich in June 1867, that they were
there in July 1868 (because Kepple was
on the voting list) and that they were
gone before December 1869.
What they were doing in Goderich from
January to at least July 1868 is unknown,
as the assessor didn’t record Kepple’s
occupation. In my second column I
mention how, according to the Goderich
Township Families, Kepple tried many
things including owning a salt well in
Goderich. It’s possible that the family
could have taken up residence here
during this venture, though it’s really
hard to say and we may never know.
One thing we can infer though, is
that Kepple kept his homestead in the
Bluevale area because, as I mentioned
earlier, he and his family appear in
the 1871 Census of Canada for the
Township of Morris.
This newfound information still doesn’t
prove that any of the Disney’s attended
the Central School, as there were at
least three ward schools in Goderich
at the time they were living there: the
Goderich Central School, the school on
East Street and the school on the corner
of Wellington and Elgin.
In my opinion, it’s unlikely that the
Disneys attended the school on the
corner of Wellington and Elgin, as it is
in St. Andrew’s Ward. It’s more likely
that they went to either the East Street
or Central School. The school in St.
David’s Ward was the last to be built in
1875; long after the Disneys had left.
The Central School was provided in
1856 and the school on East Street
continued to provide education to the
younger students, except for those in St.
George’s Ward, who went to Central
with the older students. It’s possible that
Elias and Robert could have gone to the
Central school because there are other
students on the list who were between
the ages of 13 and 16.
I was really pleased with all of the
information I was able to find, it was
a unique and exciting exploration of a
small part of Huron County’s history. I
would also like to thank Jenna from the
museum for her help in searching the
archives and directing me to sources that
I would not have found on my own. It
was neat to be able to figure out where
the real Disney House would have been
located. I don’t know if the mystery of
where Elias Disney attended school will
ever be solved, but in the words of his
son Walt, “Why worry? If you’ve done
the very best you can, worrying won’t
make it any better.”

Goderich once again receives “Prettiest Town”
award
At the recent Communities in Bloom
National Symposium held in Charlottetown, PEI, Goderich was once again
held in high esteem by the judges who
toured the town back in late July.
Goderich has been part of the Communities in Bloom (CIB) organization for
19 of its 20 year existence in Canada, and
has garnered first-place in the provincial,
national and international competitions
over the past several years.
Because of this, the National CIB executive this year established a special Grand
Champion Award to allow us to compete with towns in Canada who had won
similar awards.
“Goderich was awarded some of the highest number of points of a town of any
size in Canada,” said one of the judges
following the award presentation.
The Ultimate Grand Champion award
was presented to CIB Chair Barb Allen
and other town representatives as the top
award at the event that evening.
In addition, Goderich was given special
recognition for its 19 years of participation in CIB, as well as an award for the
Arboretum restructuring of the Courthouse Square Park.
“The Town of Goderich has demonstrated its mettle and resolve over the
past three years rebuilding, restoring and
replanting after the devastating tornado
of 2011,” the judges said.
Goderich Communities in Bloom officials said the town should be proud of its
volunteers, organizations, and parks department workers who make the effort,
year after year to help make Goderich
the “Prettiest Town in Canada.”
Judges Gaeten Deschenes of Montreal
and Stephen King of Halifax were in
town on July 24 and 25, 2014 visiting
a wide variety of sites and locations including Lions Harbour Park, the Maitland Recreation Centre, the Menesetung
Bridge, Maitland Cemetery, the beaches
and town hall, just to name a few.
Both Deschenes and King praised the
work of volunteers within the town.
“The role of volunteers is very impor-
tant,” King said. “I was told by someone that Goderich has 7,700 volunteers,
which is the entire population – so everyone plays a part in some way.”
King and Deschenes explained that
Communities in Bloom is judged on
much more just than gardens and landscaping.
There are six categories on which communities are weighed including environmental, tidiness, heritage, landscape,
floral and urban forestry.
“It all ties in together,” King said.
While touring a community, judges take
note of their accomplishments but also
make “friendly recommendations” on
how to improve, King said.
They praised Goderich for their preparation for Communities in Bloom.
“We can tell those who have it together
and Goderich has it done pretty well,”
he said. “This town really has some natural assets that are incredible.”

Goderich welcomes new economic
development and tourism co-ordinator
By Steph Smith
Last year, Goderich’s tourism co-ordinator Bob Marshall retired. The position
and its responsibilities have since been
revamped to include economic development in its title.
James Cox, whose parents were both
originally from Goderich, began working as the new economic development
and tourism co-ordinator for Goderich
on June 23.
“I grew up in Dorchester, but I was always visiting the area because I have a
lot of family still in Goderich,” Cox said.
“As a result, I spent a lot of time there
growing up.”
Cox has spent most of his working career
in economic development, completing
an undergrad in political science from
Queen’s University before going on to
complete his masters in public administration at the University of Ottawa.
“I think it’s a very exciting position,”
Cox said about his initial interest in the
position. “Goderich is a uniquely placed
town which is attractive to new businesses; there are a lot of economic development opportunities.”
Even though he’s from the area, Cox said
it’s important to have outsider knowledge of Goderich as well, adding that
having an understanding of community
is beneficial in a position that encompasses both economic development and
tourism.
Cox said the time for a fresh and new
perspective to determine where Goderich is at in terms of coming up with new
ideas and initiatives.
“The immediate rebuilding phase after
the tornado three years ago is starting to
come to a close,” Cox said. “So now is a
good time to start refocusing.”
Cox said in the short-term, he would like
to build partnerships with the businesses
that are already here, as well as talk to
the BIA and Chamber of Commerce to
expand on the connections that some
businesses already have with each other
and the community.
In the long-term, Cox said they would
have to take a look at how they want to
attract new businesses and that they’re
still figuring out the strategic plan for
this.
“Goderich possesses a high quality of
life, which personally attracts me to the
area,” Cox said. “I’m looking forward to
relocating and raising my family here.”
Coupling high quality of life with the
potential for economic development,
Cox said Goderich has many opportunities to flourish.
As economic development is a term that
can hold many different meanings, Cox
said the meaning of it for him is clear: it’s
synonymous with community building.
“Not only is it [economic development]
about attracting new businesses, it’s
about attracting new residents as well,”
Cox said. “It’s about creating a diverse
economy that is stable and Goderich is
poised to create that diversity as it has a
lot of the building blocks to do so.”
These building blocks include Goderich’s private and commercial sectors,

Seeds in Huron County

small-scale manufacturing, arable land
and mining, to name only a few.
“It’s important for everyone, not just
new businesses, to understand the worth
of the investment in Goderich,” Cox
said.
Moving forward, Cox said he would be
very interested in taking Marshall up on
any advice that he may have in regards to
both Goderich’s economic and tourism
development.
“Tourism and economic development
go hand-in hand,” Cox said. “Goderich
was very fortunate to have Bob [Marshall] over the years. I can only hope to
continue the good work he’s done.”
While Cox has worked within the economic development sector before, he
said he’s still getting up to speed on
everything happening in Goderich currently and that he looks forward to what
the future may hold.

Great Lakes Storm of 1913 Committee receives
Governor General’s award
The splendour of Rideau Hall provided
the backdrop for the presentation
of the Governor General’s History
Awards ceremony.
Amongst
this
year’s
winners
was the Great Lakes Storm of
1913 Remembrance Committee
for Excellence in Community
Programming.
The GLS Committee was selected
from several entries for the prestigious
award for its ‘extraordinary efforts,’
which ‘resulted in 65 collaborations,
the involvement of over 1,000
volunteers and numerous events that
hosted over 12,000 guests, including
60 descendants of the disaster’s victims’
in Goderich in November 1913.
Co-chairs David MacAdam and
Paul Carroll accepted the medallion
from Governor General Hon. David
Johnston on behalf of the GLS
committee. MacAdam delivered a
brief but moving address in which
he paid tribute to the memory of the
hundreds of souls who were lost in
the most violent storm in Great Lakes
history.
The award presentation was followed
by a reception in the famed Tent Room
where His Excellency mingled freely
with award winners and guests. The
Governor General complimented the
GLS Committee for their dedication
in preserving a vital part of Canada’s
Great Lakes history.
Afterwards the committee members
attended a question period in the
House of Commons where the award
winners were introduced and given
an all-party standing ovation. Huron
Bruce MP Ben Lobb hosted a tour
of the Parliament buildings and gave
a detailed first hand account of the
recent tragedy. Pock-marked and
bullet scarred masonry are still clearly
visible as a reminder of the October 22
incident.
The award winners were regally
entertained at a gala dinner at the
Canadian War Museum in the evening
hosted by Global Television’s Tom
Clark. A Great War Music Hall show
featuring Mike Ford of the Moxie

Sky Harbour Gallery
33874 Airport Road
Aviation history runs deep in Goderich. Sky Harbour Airport is the lone-stop
landing strip for flight in our town. It includes a museum gallery that traces the
history of the airport from its founding in 1938, with an emphasis on the important role played by the airport during the Second World War.
Sky Harbour Gallery, under the umbrella of the Huron County Museum, has
welcomed visitors for 13 years. The aviation history provides a glimpse into the
past with uniforms, equipment, photographs and instruction manuals.
R.C.A.F. veterans have contributed to the unique collection on display at the
airport gallery. Additional donations of artifacts relating to No. 12 E.F.T.S. are
welcome.
The museum is located in the airport terminal building, off Highway 21, just
north of Goderich. You can sit out on the patio and watch the takeoffs and landings or courtesy bicycles are available for adults and children.

519-524-2686

A trip to Goderich would not be complete without a stop at the Huron Historic Gaol (pronounced jail).
The unique octagonal building served
as the county jail from 1841 until 1972
when inmates were transferred to regional facilities.
The Gaol is the only National Historic
Site in Huron County and the building
itself once housed the County Courts
and Council Chambers.
Thomas Young was the architect of the
Gaol and at the time it was considered a
model of humanitarian prison design.
The Governor’s House was built in 1901
in the area of one of the courtyards, and
clearly illustrates the important status
of the position within the rural Ontario
community in the early part of the 20th
century. Visitors will take pleasure in
viewing and learning the stories behind
the many unique items and displays
found throughout the Gaol and Governor’s House.

our history
The Port of Goderich: ‘Canada’s Prettiest Town’
By David Yates
Welcome to the Port of Goderich on
Ontario’s West Coast!
Our history on land, air and sea runs deep.
When courier du bois, Etienne Brule, ‘the
immortal scoundrel’ set foot in the area in
the 1620s, the Attawandaron people thrived
on the banks of the Huron Lake Shore.
The Ojibwa made the present location of
Goderich their summer encampment because
of the plentiful supply of fish and game.
Menesetung, the Ojibwa phrase for ‘healing
waters’ was the earliest known name for the
Maitland River.
Fur traders, Frank Deschamps and William
Gooding were the first Europeans to settle
Goderich’s present location near where Lions
Park overlooks the harbour today.
In June 1827, the erratic Scottish novelist and
Canada Company agent met the eccentric
Dr. William ‘Tiger’ Dunlop in the harbour
basin and officially founded the settlement
after Frederick John Robinson, Viscount
Goderich, Secretary of State for War and the
Colonies.
The ‘Tiger’ was a War of 1812 veteran and
army surgeon. Stories of his heavy drinking,
practical jokes and eccentric behaviour are
the stuff of local folklore. His gravesite on the
north bank of the Maitland River overlooks
the town he built.
Dr. Dunlop may have built the town but
John Galt designed it. Contrary to popular
myth, the town plans for Goderich and
Guelph were not switched but Galt did
create Goderich’s unique ‘Square’ with 8
streets radiating out from the Court House
Park. Look carefully at the map and one
can clearly discern the pattern of the Union
Jack forming the town’s centre. The Square
is Galt’s statement of loyalty that is forever
embedded into the heart of the town.
Until the opening of the Huron Road (now
King’s Hwy #8), Goderich harbour was the

point of entry for emigration

lands of the Huron Tract.
Thus making the area unique
in that this is the only part
of Ontario where settlement
moved from west to east
rather than the more typical
westward movement.
As the Canada Company’s
western
headquarters,
Goderich had aristocratic
pretensions.
Company
Commissioner
Thomas
Mercer Jones and his wife,
Elizabeth Strachan Jones,
daughter of Bishop John
Strachan of Toronto, held court in their
Georgian style manner now known as the
Park House Restaurant on West Street.
The palatial home seen on the north shore of
the Maitland River was built by Dutch Baron
Vincent van Tuyll in 1832. His English
wife, Baroness Charlotte Mansfield, is the
great–great-great grandmother of Samantha
Cameron, wife of British Prime Minister
David Cameron.
Baroness van Tuyll and Elizabeth Strachan
Jones were the first people recorded to have
enjoyed the sublime beauty of a Lake Huron
sunset. They were known to sit on the lake
bank to watch ‘the going down of the sun.’ A
local tradition which endures to this day.
During the 1837 Upper Canadian Rebellions
when tensions ran high throughout the
province, Goderich remained a Tory bastion.
‘Tiger’ Dunlop led the local militia, which
was sent to the Sarnia frontier to guard against
American invasion. They called themselves
the ‘Huron True Blues’, or ‘Huron Braves’
but their uneventful service earned them
the more accurate title of ‘Bloody Useless.’
Yet, the threat to Goderich was real. In June
1838, a band of American brigands, under
the guise of liberating Canada from British
rule, pillaged the Goderich harbour carting
off whatever loot they could carry.
The port became the centre of the town’s
commercial activity as fish and lumber
were shipped out of the harbour. Today,
the Goderich elevators ship grain across the
continent and around the world.
Safe navigation required a lighthouse to
our history
guide vessels into the harbour. The present
Goderich lighthouse was constructed in 1852
and is the oldest lighthouse on the Canadian
side of Lake Huron. The lighthouse owes its
‘squat and square’ design to the height of the
bluffs and ease of construction.
The arrival of the Grand Trunk Railway in
1858 brought more economic development,
as Goderich became a vital transportation
link for westward expansion into the interior
of North America.
In 1866 while drilling for oil in Saltford,
Samuel Platt and Peter S. MacEwan
accidentally discovered a rich salt bed.
Today, the Sifto Salt Mine is the world’s
largest producer of salt. Sifto salt is shipped
by lake, rail and truck throughout the
continent and remains a vital mainstay of the
local economy.
Also, in 1866, the Fenian scare brought out
the local militia once again to ward off the
threat of invaders. Although the Fenians
never showed, General William Tecumseh
Sherman visited the port in June to calm
Canadian fears of Fenian invasion.
A Royal Naval gunboat, the ‘HMS Cherub’,
was dispatched to Goderich later that
summer. In 1867, with the arrival of the
Dominion gunboats ‘Prince Alfred’ and
‘Rescue,’ Goderich may justly claim the title
of ‘Cradle of the Royal Canadian Navy’ as
the Dominion boats were crewed by local
militiamen and sailors.
As a result of the Fenian scare, the artillery
pieces overlooking the harbour were placed
here at this time to be manned by the
Goderich Garrison Artillery.
The Goderich Gaol constructed between
1839-42 is a National Historic Site. The
imposing structure was built from stone
quarried in the Maitland River. In its early
days, it served as county council chamber,
courthouse, and insane asylum.
It has also housed some of Canada’s
most infamous criminals. In 1858, James
Donnelly, the patriarch of the notorious
Donnelly clan from Lucan, was sentenced to
hang here for the murder of Jim Farrell (His
death sentence was commuted to 10 years in
Kingston Penitentiary).
In 1869, the last public execution took
place outside the gaol’s walls when Nicholas
Melady was hanged in front of a large and
enthusiastic crowd for the murder of his
father and stepmother.
Steven Truscott was incarcerated in the
Goderich gaol during his trial at the
courthouse. In 1959, Truscott was sentenced
to hang for the rape and murder of classmate
Lynne Harper. After Truscott’s death
sentence was overturned in 1960, he spent
the next nine years in prison. In 2007,
Truscott’s guilty verdict was set aside.
At the turn of the twentieth century, Goderich
was famous as a Victorian resort town.
With grand luxury resorts like the Hotel
Sunset and the Point Farm Hotel, Goderich
hosted nobility and U.S. President Chester
Arthur.
The Great Storm of 1913 left its mark on
Goderich history when over 30 ships were
wrecked and another eight vessels foundered
on Lake Huron with all hands. Of the 244
lives lost in the storm, several were Goderich
and area men lost on the ‘Wexford’. An annual
Mariners’ service held at Knox Presbyterian
Church every February commemorates this
marine disaster.
The cenotaph in the Goderich Square was
erected on Dominion Day 1924 as a lasting
memorial to the Goderich and area men who
made the Supreme Sacrifice during the Great
War. The bronze soldier atop the cenotaph
faces the railroad station at the end of East
Street waves his helmet in eternal farewell to
those who did not return.
During the Second World War, Goderich
men and women rallied in overwhelming
numbers to serve King and Country. The
British Commonwealth Air Training Plan
established four bases in Huron County.
Locally, Goderich Sky Harbour airport was
home to Elementary Flight Training School
#12 and, later, a training station for the Royal
Navy’s Fleet Air Arm. The Royal Air Force
established an Air Navigation School in Port
Albert. The Maitland Cemetery located just
east of Goderich on highway 8 contains
the graves of over a dozen airmen killed in
training while stationed in Huron County.
The current Art Deco style Huron County
Court House located in the centre of the
Square was built after the original courthouse
burned down in 1954. It is now the seat of
Huron County Council and court system.
From 1910 until 2009, Goderich was known
for the manufacturing of road graders.
Operating under the names Good Roads
Machinery Company, Dominion Roads
Machinery Co., Champion Road Machinery
and finally, in 2000, Volvo Road Graders,
Goderich was world famous for its heavy
machinery production.
On Sunday, August 21, 2011, an F-3
tornado swept through the town’s centre. In
16 seconds, the tornado took one life, injured
37 others and destroyed dozens of historic
homes, buildings and businesses. The town
is continuing its recovery as evidenced by
signs of new building throughout the town.
The tornado may have destroyed much of
the town’s historic core but it did not take
out its heart.
It is hard to know the exact origins of
Goderich’s label as ‘The Prettiest Town in
Canada’ but the term has been variously
attributed to Queen Victoria, the Queen
Mother and even Her Majesty, Queen
Elizabeth II, herself. Yet, despite the fact
none of these Royal Ladies ever visited the
town, there is no doubt that if any of Their
Majesties ever came, they would certainly
agree that Goderich is ‘the Prettiest Town in
Canada.’
The Huron County Museum on North
Street, located in the old Goderich Central
School, is a great place to start the discovery
of the county’s rich and varied history.
Special rates are available for visits for the
Historic Gaol and Marine Museum.

Menesetung Bridge
On the Dunlop Trail: This trail, winding
around the Maitland River in Goderich,
takes hikers through history and nature.
There are two entrances along North
Harbour Road and a third off Highway
21, just one-kilometre north of Goderich.
Both North Harbour Road entrances
take you back to when the Canadian
Pacific Railway roared through town.
The first starts where the 1907 CPR
Station house originally sat, and brings
you to the second, where you traverse
a converted CPR bridge over the
Maitland River. When converted for
pedestrian use in 1992, the bridge was
dubbed Menesetung – which is how
the Chippewa referred to the laughing
waters of the Maitland River.

Maitland Woods
Within the town of Goderich, a
pocket of nature flourishes in the 240acres of the Maitland Woods. A 3.3kilometre trail leads visitors through a
woodlot containing mixed hardwood
and coniferous trees and a variety of
plant life, including mosses, lichens,
ferns, wildflowers, marsh, cattails and
sawgrass. There are also fresh springs
and man-made fishponds. It is home
to an estimated 35 species of native and
migratory birds along with partridge,
rabbits, foxes, deer and the occasional
brush wolf. In spring, you can see wild
ducks and geese in the nesting grounds
within the adjacent property. The
Woods is an ideal hike for a naturalist. In
winter, cross-country skiers find the trail
flat, sheltered and marked. Enter the
trail at Suncoast Drive, Parsons Court or
Huckins Street.
Marine Heritage
Walkway
The Port of Goderich waterfront and
harbour areas have a rich marine history
dating back to the day before the first
European settlers arrived. An intriguing blend of maritime, manufacturing
and social history combines to create a
special heritage chronicle. Walking the
waterfront walkways will permit you to
immerse yourself in the vivid memories of yesteryear. The Marine Heritage
Walkway signs are written in the casual
language of a readable local history –
and highlight many of the key points
of major interest across the Goderich
waterfront. The Waterfront Walkway
follows the Boardwalk from the Main
Beach, through St. Christopher’s Beach
to Rotary Cove. The Ridgewalk follows
the hilltop park system overlooking the
waterfront. Watch for eye level signs
along the Port of Goderich waterfront
and bluffs overlooking the harbour and
beaches.

our Tiger Dunlop
Tiger Dunlop
Dr. William Dunlop (1792-1848)
The tomb of ‘Tiger Dunlop’ honours
Dr. William Dunlop, a physician, author, woodsman, soldier, politician,
raconteur and one of Huron County’s
most colourful and historical figures.
Born in Scotland, he served in Canada
as an army surgeon during the War of
1812. His writings, including articles
based on his residence in India (18171819), won him a place among the witty
contributors to Blackwood’s Magazine
with the title of ‘Tiger’.
In 1826, Dunlop emigrated to Upper
Canada. As ‘Warden of the Forests’ for
the Canada Company, he assisted John
Galt in opening up the Huron Tract and
in 1827, founded Goderich. The Tiger
Dunlop Heritage Trail starts at the former site of the CPR Station at the Goderich Harbour. It crosses North Harbour
Road to the Menesetung Bridge, where
there is a magnificent view of the Maitland River. Beyond the bridge, the trail
continues to Tiger Dunlop’s Tomb.

Livery/Local Theatre
Nationally acclaimed as one of the finest in intimate halls for aesthetic and
acoustic ambience, and home to one of
Canada’s longest-running community
theatre groups, The Livery is the place to
intimately experience the arts.
Each season, The Livery presents a number of theatrical productions under the
flag of the Goderich Little Theatre. Using the talents of hundreds of volunteers,
the community can experience quality
dramas, comedies, musicals and historical presentations. The Livery also runs a
film series between September and April
of national and international films not
generally available to patrons in rural
Ontario. Working with the Toronto
Film Festival and Film Circuit Board the
series offers up to seven films per season.
A volunteer committee orchestrates the
entire program and the audience averages 1,500 per season. Whether showcasing professional performing artists
from across the country or presenting
local talent, The Livery takes pride in
each event. These licensed, cabaret-style
concerts vary in theme and highlight a
variety of genres, including jazz, blues,
slapstick comedy, opera scenes, magic
acts…you name it.
From Stable to Stage…
Records indicate that the rear portion of
The Livery was erected during the 1840’s
as a harness shop by Samuel Seegmuller,
trader in hides and whiskey along the
Huron Trail between Guelph and Goderich. By 1878, A.M. Polley had added
two sections also in the Maitland River
stone, to the front of the early shop to
accommodate his livery stable business.
After the turn of the century, when horses gave way to automobiles, the building
became the first local car dealership. In
1974, it was transformed into a building
centre.
By 1978 it was slated for demolition.
Goderich Town Council, however, recognized the historical importance of the
building, forestalled the demolition, allowing time for a private citizen, interested in the preservation of historical
buildings, to intervene with a down payment on the property.
A local architect recognized its potential
as a theatre. Soon, a group of enthusi-

Square, the Festival of Arts and Crafts,
Jane’s Walk, the Memories Then and
Now Car Show and the Kinsmen Easter
Egg Hunt engage our community. The
Multicultural Festival came downtown
for the first time this year, and like the
other events mentioned, the festival was
a success because it fit.
The BIA Farmers and Flea Markets
continue to grow. The Market Square
provides the architecture, the BIA
provides the coordination; local growers
and artists sell their product and people
come downtown.
The Farmers’ market will continue to
thrive because our markets embody who
we are as a community. A trip to the
market has become a part of our Saturday
morning ritual. We need to connect
person-to-person, stop to chat, pet the
dog, exclaim at how a child has grown,
make goo-goo eyes at the new baby and
we feel good about ourselves when we
support local farmers and artists.
People are excited about Wing Hong’s
Restaurant coming back saying, “We’re
going to be able to get chicken balls and
chicken fried rice downtown again.”
Foot traffic is back to where it was
before the tornado and let’s hope a lower
Canadian dollar attracts more visitors
from the United States in 2015.
Living in downtown Goderich is
becoming a lifestyle choice. When I
stop after work to grab something for
dinner or pick up a movie, I always take
a moment to gaze at the park. It doesn’t
surprise me that people want to live
downtown, just look at the view.

Check out the Port of Goderich and stay a while!
Maitland Valley Marina can accommodate
pleasure boats of all sizes. Boaters from Canadian
and American shores have discovered Maitland
Valley Marina as a convenient deep-water
channel entrance, a protected mooring, a fullservice marina, shuttle services and amenities
include WIFI, a pool and a private beach
at the sister marina, Maitland Inlet Marina.
Goderich offers incredible local restaurants and
diverse recreational opportunities. The marina
has a tourism package available, highlighting
the many services and attractions available.
Conveniently located close to town and walking
trails, beside the commercial port which is
active with Great Lakes vessels and oceanbound ships coming into the harbour. They
are quite the sight! Maitland Valley Marina
also offers limited short stay trailer camping
by reservation – many of our boating visitors
make arrangements to meet up with friends
and families doing the camping circuit since we
offer an ideal base for their joint activities.
Maitland Valley Marina is a well-dredged,
full-service marina for all boating needs. For
information, contact Maitland Valley Marina
and Trailer Park at 519-524-4409 or VHF
channel 68, while touring on the lake..
our harbour
Harbour
The Goderich harbour is a key deepwater port on the Great Lakes - St. Lawrence Seaway. Local wharfage is 1,400
metres, or 4,600 feet, and harbour depth
is 26 feet or seaway depth. It is the only
industrial seaway depth harbour on the
east shore of Lake Huron and is open
about 10 months of the year, depending
on winter ice conditions.
Lake and ocean-going vessels up to 222
metres (730 feet) in length can be accommodated. The port serves the grain,
salt, chemical and agricultural processing
industries. Each year, 100 large lake and
ocean freighters visit the port to load salt
from Sifto and to load and deliver other
commodities such as grains and calcium
chloride. Approximately 200 tonnes of
grain are moved annually.

IT TAKES A COMMUNITY
TO CALL A PLACE HOME
