Vers les mondes inconnus
Notre saison 2014 – 2015 : 18 semaines de spectacles, 40 projets artistiques, une abondance
d’expériences uniques. Se rassembler autour
d’un événement dansé est une aventure dont
on ne connaît ni le début, ni la fin. Voyagez vers
des mondes inconnus et évocateurs. Au-delà de
l’antre de notre salle de spectacle, l’expérience
de proximité avec les artistes, en début de
carrière pour la majorité, laisserait une empreinte
indélébile. L’art vivant, c’est la vie.
Au sein de notre organisme remodelé, il y a maintenant un directeur général secondé par une
commissaire. Le premier voit Tangente en grand ;
la deuxième prend plus spécifiquement soin des
artistes, des publics et de la communauté. À
cette configuration nouvelle, s’ajoute une équipe
qui travaille sans cesse à rendre imaginable ces
rencontres artistiques inclassables.
Enfin, nous sommes tous impatients de nous
asseoir à vos côtés afin de nous adonner au hasard
de la création contemporaine.
Moving into unknown
territories
We are: movements of ideas, of values, objects,
light and sound, of humanity, disciplines, sense and
sensibilities. The movement of destiny is spiraling us
towards the core of downtown Montréal and into
Espace Danse Québec. In the fall of 2016, it is in this
dance centre that a matrix of creative encounters
will be woven among Tangente, Agora de la danse,
the École de danse contemporaine de Montréal and
the Grands Ballets. If you turn your attention for
a few moments to the corner of Bleury and Mayor
Streets you’ll be able to witness this dream under
construction. Rest reassured that although everything
there will be newly built, Tangente will remain intimate
and audacious.
Here is our 2014-2015 season: 18 weeks with performances of 40 artistic projects, an abundance of
unique propositions. As we gather together around
these dance events to travel through unknown and
evocative worlds, adventures await that have no
beginning and no end. Beyond the confines of the
theatre space, these experiences that take place in
close proximity to creators and performers, so many
at the beginning of their professional careers, may well
leave an indelible mark on your conscience. The live
arts are truly a form of life itself.
Within our recently restructured organisation there
is now a general director accompanied by a dance
curator. While the first one envisions the grand
scheme of things, the second works ever so closely
with artists, audiences and community. Alongside
this new configuration, a tenacious group of cultural
workers labours to make these unclassifiable artistic
encounters a reality.
We are all impatient to sit down beside you, and so to
plunge together into the wilds of all these contemporary
performances.

lumières et de sons, d’humanité, de disciplines,
de sens et de sensibilités, nous sommes. Cette
spirale mouvante nous mène vers le centre du
centre-ville : Espace Danse Québec. Dans ce lieu,
à l’automne 2016, une matrice de créativité et de
rencontres se tissera en compagnie de l’Agora
de la danse, l’École de danse contemporaine de
Montréal et Les Grands Ballets. Posez quelques

_CLASSE 2014
Quel est l’enjeu de la plus jeune génération de chorégraphes qui entre dans
le monde toujours plus complexe et
compétitif de l’art ? Chaque année, la
question est vivement discutée par notre
jury de créateurs émergents aux diverses
visions artistiques. Cinq participants sont
sélectionnés avec soin parmi une vingtaine
de candidats. Ce programme de courtes
pièces témoigne de l’existence d’une multitude de courants esthétiques ainsi que
du sentiment d’urgence de créer.

En quête du Nouvel Absurde : le dramaturge Eugène Ionesco rencontre l’auteur
Milan Kundera. Cet audacieux quatuor
est propulsé dans un monde surréaliste
et irrationnel qui entremêle plusieurs
disciplines. Confrontés à une dramaturgie
sur le désir et la dissonance fragmentée,
finiront-ils par se retrouver ?
Cette pièce parle de la mémoire et de ce
qui demeure une fois que le temps a fait
son œuvre. Dans cet univers poétique et
surréaliste, six interprètes interdépendants dansent avec puissance et délicatesse. L’espace et le temps tissent une
trame malléable, le son est palpable.
In search of the New Absurd: playwright
Ionesco meets novelist Kundera. This venturesome quartet is propelled into a surreal,
illogical reality through an assortment of
disciplines. Forging a fragmented dramaturgy
on desire and dissonance, how will they find
each other?

This piece is about memory and what gems
remain in our hands once the sands of time
have filtered down. In this surreal poetic environment, an interdependent sextet of dancers
moves with delicate power. The time/space
fabric is malleable, and sound palpable.

What is at stake for the youngest of dancemakers in an increasingly complex and
crowded global art world? The answer is
vigorously debated each year through the
various artistic visions of our jury of emerging
choreographers. Five contenders are chosen

multiple aesthetic directions and the sense

Bath House
Bath House est une courte pièce de
contorsion dansée qui explore la notion
de territoire, d’envahissement et le besoin
de fuir la répression. Trois corps contorsionnistes sont contraints à suivre un
chemin précis, se rapprochant parfois,
mais n’interagissant jamais.

Bath House is a short work of danced contorsion exploring territories, invasion and
the need to escape repression to exist. Three
contortionists’ bodies are restricted to a
very precise path, which sometimes moves
them closer to one and another, but never to
interact.
Cherepaka
Inspiré de tableaux de Francis Bacon et
de Logique de la sensation de Deleuze,
Cherepaka est conçu comme un tableau
scénique explorant le devenir-animal. Cet
essai cherche à déconstruire le spectaculaire de la contorsion, afin de faire de ce
langage acrobatique un langage du corps,
une matière à représentation.
The Muted Note is based on a suite of songs,
a hybrid of jazz and European art song, by
Scott Thomson that sets poems by P.K. Page,
a celebrated figure in Canadian literature.
Not only has Susanna Hood choreographed
these songs on three other dancers, but she will
also sing them live as the vocalist in Scott’s
quintet, The Disguises. The choreography,
like the songs, will be animated through improvisation; the creative input of both the
dancers and the musicians is at the core of
this show.

The Muted Note est une suite de onze
chansons inspirées des traditions du
jazz et de poésie chantée européenne et
écrites par Scott Thomson sur des vers
de P.K. Page, l’une des plus célèbres
auteures de la littérature canadienne.
Susanna Hood chorégraphie ces compositions pour trois autres danseurs et les
chante en direct avec The Disguises,

Four female office workers give orders and
pirouette around a conference table. One
woman mounts it, and suddenly lays slack.
Manœuvring her body carefully, the others
don’t acknowledge her utterances. The scene
turns violent. What emerges is a paradoxical ethics of care and indifference.

Mary and Zohar are Thirst/Clarity. This
duet performance collective builds landscapes of bodies in urban settings, engages
in processes of ancestral healing. Through
integration of movement, sound and videographic imagery, these two performance
scores portray scenes of civilian struggle,
displacement and legacies of war.

“I see Infinity Doughnut as a blind and
imaginative system of navigation exploring
inanimate and also human phenomena.
Together we’ll look at shapes, spaces and
interconnectedness though simpleminded,
volatile and robust dancing. In this speculative and naïve survey of our surroundings,
bodies are squeezed and compressed, they
also laugh, vibrate and drift. We will create
a movement machine to show the mind’s
fluctuations. This performance event invites
performers and audience to surrender to

Sans Lactose met en scène six femmes qui évoluent dans un univers teinté d'une
rusticité empruntée au country des années 1900. Cette caractéristique se manifeste
par une absence de retenue dans leurs comportements explorant la masculinité. Elles
évoluent dans un monde sans faux-semblants, sans fioritures, sans contraintes et
sans hommes. Sans Lactose est un mélange entre une danse en ligne désalignée et un
striptease blasé avec une touche de féminité tranquille.
In Sans Lactose, six dancers move about in the rustic ambiance of old western American
movies from the 1900s. An absence of filters in their behavior contributes to this character
of this universe, exploring the women’s masculinity. The performers progress in a world that
is free of screening, censorship, embellishment and men. Sans Lactose is a blend between
unaligned line dancing, blasé striptease and gentle femininity.

Karina and Brice dig into the void, empty
the fullness. They layer words, thoughts and
movements with constraints or meanings.
These fervent explorers devise strategies.
They overburden, overload, and overtangle
the body and spirit with labyrinthine intentions, dancing knots.

How do our fears manifest? The monsters appear in
our heads and then run through our bodies all the
way to our feet.

Les idiomes culturels et linguistiques
dans Idiom sont musique et physicalité.
Ils se questionnent : quels sont les effets
de l’absence de frontières ? Idiom est une
exploration sous forme de dialogue des
liens unissant des cultures divergentes.
Détournons le devant. Un nouveau mode
d’échange émerge de la révolution
perpétuelle des corps, de l’espace et du
son. Nous prenons une posture positive
quant à la tridimensionnalité et célébrons littéralement les multiples facettes
de la relation théâtrale.
Coming from Toronto and Ouagadougou,
their lingua franca is choreography. And so,
the linguistic and cultural idioms of Idiom
are made through musical and physical
interplay. They ask: what are the effects of
boderlessness? Idiom proposes a dialogic
exploration of the threads that connect
divergent cultures.

A SHADOW

Interferencias est une communauté de partage d’expérience nomade
et éphémère, initiée à Mexico en 2009 par vingt-cinq artistes. À la
frontière entre le quotidien et la création, cette édition montréalaise
est l’occasion d’inviter seize personnes à vivre et travailler ensemble
pendant deux semaines. Huit participants canadiens sont sélectionnés
afin de se joindre à huit membres d’Interferencias venus d’Europe et
d’Amérique Latine.
Préparez-vous à une célébration quelque peu déroutante et surprenante
de l’art vivant. Pour le spectateur, cette « performance » se situe entre

Interferencias is a nomadic, ephemeral community of shared experience,
inaugurated in Mexico in 2009 among twenty-five performing artists.
Blurring the lines between everyday life and art-making, this Montreal
iteration invites sixteen people to come together in a two week-long encounter
of living and working. Eight Canadian participants will be selected to join
eight Interferencias members from Europe and South America.
Prepare to enter a kind of chaotic and surprising celebration of live art.
For the spectator, this “performance” will move between the experience of
witnessing creative process and a work-in-progress presentation. What will
happen is not bound to anything absolutely, other than “being together” and
the will to be and to exist. Much love to everyone.

à la magie des ombres, une esthétique de
la pénombre. Un travail sur la beauté qui
explore les frontières entre la noirceur et
la lumière, la forme et l’imaginaire ; entre
l’immobilité méditative, les volumes qui
se meuvent et les lumières qui caressent
la silhouette d’un corps ou d’un objet.
Dans cette recherche de grâce et de
splendeur visuelle, la musique et le
mouvement fusionnent avec l’espace et
les ombres. Il en résulte un monde de
rêve à l’incertaine clarté où le moindre
mouvement d’ombres envoûte et fascine.
Memory of a Shadow is a visual hymn to
the magic of shadows, an aesthetic of halflight. A work about beauty that explores the
borders between darkness and illumination,
form and imagination; between meditative
immobility, and the moving volumes that
caress the silhouette of a body or of an object.

Nous dansons indéniablement dans des sociétés
en mutation accélérée. Et les formes traditionnelles
identitaires ? La gigue québécoise est une quête de
sens de « l’authenticité », un miroir qui éclate en mille
morceaux chorégraphiques. La modernisation du XXIe
siècle est au programme. Depuis 2005, ce festival
montréalais cherche à chambouler le fameux mythe
du « kitsch folklorique ». Voici un mouvement forgé par
une communauté de gigueurs-chercheurs. En 2015,
quatre visions percutantes sont révélées par des corps
manifestes. Gigues, bruits, fureurs…
Le duo de nudistes quitte son 5 à 7 pour
une soirée chic et habillée. Ils questionnent
l'impact de l'argent sur le milieu de la
danse avec sérieux, dérision et une touche
de prétention.
We are all dancing within societies engaged in a cycle of
frenetic acceleration. What is happening to the traditional
forms that embody our identities? The gigue québécoise is
engaged in a quest for the meaning of “authenticity,” it’s
a mirror that is shattering into a thousand choreographic
fragments. Twenty-first century modernisation is on the
programme. This Montréal festival has strived, since 2005,
to break the persistent local myth of “folkdance kitsch” and
there now exists a veritable movement of gigue dancerresearchers. In this 2015 edition, their dancing bodies
elucidate four striking visions. Gigues, plenty of noise,
much ferocity…

On a récemment découvert que le
prototype international du kilogramme
(qui se trouve en France depuis 1889
dans un coffre hermétique) est devenu
mystérieusement plus léger. Sachant que
l’on définit les unités de mesure de masse
sur cet objet, cela signifie que le reste du
monde s’avère plus lourd. Cette situation
délicieusement absurde témoigne de
notre besoin criant de stabilité dans un
monde obstinément changeant. Cette
pièce pour cinq interprètes est faite de
danse et de dialogues, et il se pourrait
qu'elle soit un peu drôle.

Recently, the International Prototype Kilogram (residing since 1889 in an airtight
French vault) was discovered to have mysteriously become lighter. Since we define
measurements of mass based on this object,
this means that the rest of the world got heavier. A delightfully absurd situation, testifying
to our need for constants in a stubbornly
shifting world. This will be a quintet, certain
to be a little bit funny, with some dancing and
some talking.

Comme une ode à Amelia Itcush, pionnière de la somatique, the neck to fall est
un choc de non sequiturs, une synthèse
d’événements inattendus. Écrite sur le
corps de l’interprète, cette fiction révèle
sa vulnérabilité en passant au crible les
différents aspects du personnage physique.
Created as an ode to somatic pioneer Amelia
Itcush, the neck to fall is a collision of non
sequiturs, a synthesis of unexpected events.
Written on the body of one dancer, it is a
fiction that reveals vulnerability by sifting
through layers of physical persona.

Basée sur des principes de philosophie
orientale, la pièce se décline en cinq
tableaux et éléments : le bois, le feu, la
terre, le métal, l’eau, avec leurs associations
symboliques, à travers les cinq sens. Pour
chaque élément, une gestuelle, un costume,
une palette de couleurs, un éclairage, une
poésie, une trame sonore… et un plat !
Based on principles of oriental philosophy,
the piece is divided into five tableaux and
elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water,
along with their symbolic associations and
through the five senses. For each element,
a gesture, a costume, a palette of colours,
lighting, poetry, sound track and… a dish!
At a meeting place between dance, theatre
and mime, this choreography proposes a
bare-bones aesthetic. At its heart is revealed
a strange and enigmatic character. Clouded
within a mysterious air, the solo dancer
transports us into a world in which humanity
hangs by a thread.

Studio Libre propose diverses activités dédiées à la recherche chorégraphique et
interdisciplinaire. Le projet, fondé par Lynda Gaudreau, est le prolongement des
événements Clash (2006-2009) et In Limbo (2009-2012), qui étaient essentiellement
consacrés à la réflexion critique sur le processus de création. Studio Libre est porté par la
recherche individuelle de chacun de ses participants dans un contexte d'échanges et de
présentations privées ou publiques.
Espace dramaturgique, narrativité et fiction : voilà les premières pistes sur lesquelles
s'engage Studio Libre cette saison. Le projet débute par des dialogues individuels entre
Lynda Gaudreau et les quatre artistes retenus suite à un appel de candidatures lancé en
juillet. Ces dialogues sont suivis de sessions de travail collaboratives avec l’intervention de
dramaturges et d’artistes invités.
Studio Libre proposes diverse activities that foster choreographic and interdisciplinary research.
Founded by Lynda Gaudreau, this project is the prolongation of earlier events Clash (2006-2009)
and In Limbo (2009-2012), which were grounded in critical reflexion about creative process.
Studio Libre is based in the individual research of its participants, in a context of exchange, and
private and public presentations.
Dramaturgical space, narrativity and fiction: these are the initial trajectories that will guide this
season’s edition of Studio Libre. The project will begin with one-on-one dialogues between Lynda
Gaudreau and each of the four artists who will be chosen to participate through an open call for
candidates in July. These dialogues will be followed by collaborative work sessions which will
include the intervention of dramaturges and guest artists.
