A Message
From Our President
& Executive Director
The last year was an exciting time for PSCKY. The Board of Directors embarked on the major task of
updating our strategic plan that will guide PSCKY over the next five years. Early in the planning process,
we listened to our constituents across the region through surveys and focus groups. They provided
helpful information and ideas which proved invaluable. The result was a fresh mission, vision and focused
priorities that will better serve people with Parkinson’s disease and their families.
In 2012 we provided over 4,000 touch points to people with Parkinson’s in Kentucky and Southern
Indiana. This service was largely through our growing support and exercise groups, medication
management classes, special workshops, care partner retreats and the annual symposium. The Living Well
Symposium enjoyed its best year ever, with record attendance, booth exhibitors, community awareness and
expert presenters on a variety of topics.
Janet Greene joined our ranks as Outreach & Training Specialist, taking the quality of our training to
the next level. Through her efforts, and those of our volunteers, PSCKY was approved to offer its first-ever
continuing education credits to professionals caring for people with Parkinson’s. Called PD 101 PRO, this
in-depth program has a growing impact on the quality of care Parkinson’s patients receive.
We continue our commitment to raise money and awareness in the fight against Parkinson’s. Our
signature fundraising event, Denim & Diamonds, as well as events like Run The Farm and the Trivia Bowl,
raised even more funds and public awareness about PSCKY.
We deeply appreciate all our supporters and volunteers who find creative ways to advance the cause
of helping people live well, despite Parkinson’s. Thank you to everyone who shares this journey with us.
Together, we will continue to make a positive difference in the lives of more people in our communities.
Sincerely,
Kathy Panther,
Board President

Portraits in caring
Doug & Ann Pifer
Doug and Ann Pifer are the personification of a
solid support team. Married for 41 years with four adult
children and six grandchildren (with two more on the
way), Ann and Doug have always enjoyed a busy life
filled with faith, a large family, and lots of friends. They
enjoy living life to the fullest and no challenge is too big.
Until recently, both Doug and Ann were the picture of
health, and neither could have predicted the journey
with Parkinson’s disease that lay ahead.
Doug began noticing a tremor in his right hand in
August 2011, yet did not pay it much attention. It would
come and go and did not seem to impact his daily
routine. By February of 2012, the tremor had become
more problematic and Doug mentioned it at his annual physical. A subsequent evaluation by a neurologist
resulted in a six-month “watch-and-wait”, which
Doug says he would come to regret. By October 2012,
Doug left his original neurologist and was evaluated by
Dr. Angela Hardwick, a movement disorders specialist
with the Norton Neuroscience Institute. “By chance,
I had read an article about Dr. Hardwick in a local
magazine and I knew we had to get in to see her,” said
Ann. Dr. Hardwick’s in-office exam resulted in an
immediate Parkinson’s disease diagnosis.
“Dr. Hardwick was gentle and warm, yet quite direct
in giving me the Parkinson’s diagnosis,” said Doug.
“She told me what I could expect in the future.
Needless to say, this all came as a big shock. It took
me a while to get used to that PD label.”
Soon after, The Courier-Journal featured an article
profiling the Parkinson Support Center of Kentuckiana
and our annual Living Well with Parkinson’s Symposium
held in October. Ann immediately contacted PSCKY
and spoke with a staff member who encouraged the
Pifers to sign up for the Symposium and even helped
Ann select breakout sessions. PSCKY even directed
Doug to Liz Ulanowski, a physical therapist and
4
PARK207fn_annual report.indd 4
program manager with the Neurological Physical Therapy
Residency Program at the Norton Neuroscience Institute.
Particularly impactful to the Pifers was a special PD 101
session PSCKY’s Janet Greene presented for their
“PSCKY offers highly personalized attention
and walks you through the toughest time
when you are first diagnosed. They have been
a wonderful resource for us and it has made
all the difference.”
immediate family. Doug and Janet now share a special
bond as she also has PD.
According to Doug, the most important advice
Dr. Hardwick offered is to make exercise a regular part
of your life. Clinical research shows exercise can slow
down the progression of the disease. Doug takes this
advice seriously and exercises every day, including
taking an occasional Zumba class with co-workers.
“We felt like the ability to exercise gave us back a little
control over this disease – we’re going to do anything
in our power for Doug to live well with PD,” said Ann.
With the help of their sons, they are building an
addition to their home, which includes a dedicated
exercise room.
Doug offers some advice to anyone who is newly diagnosed with PD. “Be open to learning about the disease
and with other people who can help. You don’t need to
be in this fight by yourself.”

Spotlight: Jerry Bloom
Jerry Bloom is a veteran broadcast professional whose voice is easily recognized by those listening to radio news updates each
weekend throughout Kentuckiana. When not working his full-time job as a regional manager with Mosaic, a national retail
vendor, Jerry is a weekend news reporter and anchor for 84-WHAS and the Kentucky News Network. Earlier in his career, Jerry
worked in television and radio news full-time. “I enjoy keeping my toes in the broadcasting pool, so to speak,” Jerry shared.
Anyone listening to Jerry’s smooth, polished delivery on the radio would never imagine he has Parkinson’s disease. Diagnosed
two years ago at age 60, Jerry’s first noticeable symptom was a tremor in his left hand. He ignored it for some time, assuming it was
simply a product of “getting older”. Eventually, Jerry visited his general practitioner, who diagnosed him with an essential tremor
– a common diagnosis for many who are later diagnosed
with Parkinson’s disease. “Up until this time, I was healthy “Within two months, I went from being in disbelief to
as a horse,” said Jerry. The doctor prescribed medications,
feeling very well-armed with crucial information about
which after six months of use, did not ease his symptoms.
Jerry and his wife Martha then saw a neurologist who
immediately diagnosed him with Parkinson’s disease.
“I was in shock. It is a blessing Martha was with me
that day in the doctor’s office, because I’m not sure what
information I would have retained,” he said. The very next day, Martha began researching
Parkinson’s disease. Her late father had PD and she wanted to learn anything she could so she
and Jerry could wage this fight together.
PD. She talked with me and my family and listened to our
questions and fears about navigating PD. Everything I
learned through PSCKY helped me as a newly-diagnosed
person. I cannot stress how valuable this was.”
— Jerry Bloom
In this process, Martha learned about the Parkinson Support Center of Kentuckiana and immediately contacted Adina Cook, PSCKY’s former director of outreach
and training. Adina also happens to be a person living with PD. Jerry, Martha, and their son Brian met with Adina right away and within six weeks the Blooms had
attended a PD 101 class at PSCKY. “Within two months, I went from being in disbelief to feeling very well-armed with crucial information about PD. Adina didn’t just
sit down and give us a brochure. She talked with me and my family and listened to our questions and fears about navigating PD. Everything I learned through PSCKY
helped me as a newly-diagnosed person,” said Jerry. “I cannot stress how valuable this was.”
Jerry has since become highly involved with PSCKY in his role as a member of our Communications Committee. As a broadcast professional, Jerry has been able
to help us secure some critical media coverage for important fund raising events, including some on-air interviews with 84-WHAS hosts. His professional input and
marketing savvy have been invaluable to the organization.
When asked what one piece of advice he would offer a newly-diagnosed person with PD, Jerry offers some important insight. “Be aggressive in learning as much
about the disease as you possibly can. Really press your doctors for information regarding what you can do to help ease your symptoms. Also, be diligent in exercising
and taking your medications.” Diagnosed only two years ago, Jerry can be an inspiration to many who are engaged in the same fight. “I have a mindset that Parkinson’s
disease will not beat me or dictate my life. I will fight it. I will go down swinging.”

To accomplish all we want to do to help people with
Parkinson’s and their caregivers, we need your help.
Plan now to attend our
Denim & Diamonds
Gala Celebration.
Enjoy live music, live auction, cocktails, appetizers,
and a gourmet dinner. This special event supports
programs that improve the quality of life for people
living with Parkinson’s disease.
Give your time.
We have many opportunities throughout the year for
volunteers to make a difference.
Give from your heart.
As a grassroots organization, our funding primarily
comes through the generosity of individuals, corporations and foundations who believe in our mission,
our programs and our services. These contributors
make an investment in helping people living with
Parkinson’s disease and their caregivers. As stewards,
we handle funds responsibly and believe in accountability to the public for our expenditures. We strive
to hold administrative and fundraising expenses to a
minimum. In short, we make every dollar count.
Include PSCKY in your
financial and estate
planning.
If you would like to include PSCKY in your will,
please contact us and we will gladly provide you
with the appropriate information to do so.
Thank you for believing in us and for helping us make
sure no one has to face Parkinson’s disease alone.
