the
beginning
Kelly and Trevor were in the same high
school grad class in West Vancouver but
it wasn’t until many years later when they
finally connected, and spoke for the first
time while in Whistler, BC. Both Kelly
and Trevor were in town celebrating the
upcoming weddings of their friends. “It just
so happened that Trevor was in Whistler
that same weekend, helping a male friend
celebrate his upcoming nuptials,” recalls
Kelly. “At 11pm, on an unseasonably hot
Saturday night in June, we collided amidst
the craziness that is Buffalo Bills in Whistler
Village. I had given myself until midnight
at the bar to be a good sport, and at 11:57,
fighting for space under the air conditioner,
I met Trevor.” The rest, as they say, is history.
Returning to the place where the romance
began, the couple naturally chose Whistler
as the host city for their wedding ceremony
and reception on August 27, 2011.
Kelly and Trevor hired Roxanne Cave, from
Celebrate Events, and gave her free reign
in planning and designing their wedding
weekend. “We wanted our wedding to be
full of beautiful, high-end, well thoughtout details in a welcoming, unintimidating,
Whistler-appropriate style,” says Kelly.
Stationery designer Kyla Getty of Gett
Creative Design was given a pink, orange
and navy blue palette to work with, and
created a pincushion protea illustration which
was the basis for many design elements that
were seen throughout the day.
Kelly wore a Monique Lhuillier gown from
Marcella's La Boutique in Seattle,
Washington. She paired the gown with a floorlength cathedral veil, also from Marcella's La
Boutique. Her jewellery consisted of a crystal
cuff from Tejani Jewelry in New York City.
The custom-designed topaz and diamond
earrings were borrowed from a friend. The
bridesmaids wore floor-length silk Jenny Yoo
gowns purchased from Frocks MODERN
BRIDESMAIDS in Vancouver.
Trevor wore a suit from Banana Republic.
the
ceremony
The outdoor ceremony was held in Whistler’s Lost Lake Park.
Guests were picked up in limo buses from the Westin Hotel and
brought to the site. There, they were greeted with refreshments (pink
lemonade, raspberry crush, and orange mango punch to match the
colour palette). There were also monogrammed pink and orange
parasols on hand to protect them from the sun. The ceremony
decor was a mix of natural elements (such as wooden chairs and
a chuppah made from natural wood, draped in sheer navy fabric).
Vibrant bursts of colour were found in monumental floral elements
flanking either side of the ceremony site; custom pink and orange
floral designs gracing the aisle; and brightly-hued flowers hanging
in small glass vases on the back of the chuppah. The floral and decor
were a joint collaboration between Celebrate Events and Han
Fokkink of Rembrandt Design. Live music by local singer/songwriter
Collin Bullock provided entertainment for the guests, prior to the
commencement of the ceremony.
The groomsmen walked down the aisle wearing matching dark grey
suits and navy ties, with pink and orange stripes. Following them were
the bridesmaids in floor length silk Jenny Yoo (Talia) dresses in navy
blue. They carried beautiful bouquets mirroring the ceremony floral

arrangements. Finally came the six flower girls in matching custom
navy dresses, with custom pink and orange rosette necklaces.
One little ring bearer wore a mini navy J. Crew suit and bowtie,
matching the groomsmen’s. Preceding the bride was the eldest flower
girl, pulling the youngest (eight-months) in a silver trolley, adorned
with flowers in pink and orange. The procession was far from
flawless, but adorable.
Kelly then walked down the aisle with her father to “Marry Me” by
Train, performed by singer/songwriter Colin Bullock. “We then had a
beautiful non-denominational ceremony at which we exchanged the
vows we had written together,” she says.
Following the ceremony the guests were brought back to the Westin
for the reception and ushered onto a very large, beautiful
patio for cocktails. The Westin was selected as the perfect reception
venue for Kelly and Trevor as they wanted a location that showcased
Whistler’s natural beauty. The beautiful and large outdoor patio and
reception space with 20 foot, floor-to-ceiling windows fit the bill.
Most importantly, it had all the amenities, and food and beverage
capabilities, of a high-end hotel.

Once on the patio, guests were greeted with
signature orange cocktails, an open bar, and a
variety of passed hors d’oeuvres. The vibrant
pink, orange and navy decor was carried
throughout. Guests were entertained by
amazing local artist Colin Bullock, and many
requested CD’s to purchase. In lieu of a guest
book, custom “Love Note” cards were filled in
by guests and clipped to a tree. The youngest
guests were the first to enjoy photos taken by
Vancouver Photobooth in front of a pink
backdrop. Fun costumes were provided to
keep it interesting. Finally, guests found their
table assignments hanging on a beautiful live
tree, which remained lit and visible behind
the head table throughout the evening. Prior
to the start of the reception, the children were
moved upstairs for a full scale ‘kids’ party’ run
by Whistler Babysitting.
Later, everyone enjoyed a colour-matched pink
and orange candy table, designed by Celebrate
Events, and custom pink and orange macarons
(in raspberry and blood orange flavours), created
by Vancouver’s Ganache Patisserie. The
macarons were wrapped in clear boxes, sealed
with the couple’s signature logo.
Lisa Vertefeuille of The Flour
Pot created a four-tiered cake
decorated with white fondant
and navy blue trim. Three
dimensional decor elements
(including the couple’s logo,
bright orange and pink roses and
protea) created in bright pops
of colour, stood out against the
white backdrop. “We wanted to
have cake for everyone, so we
selected three flavours,” says Kelly.
“The red velvet was an homage to
my time living in Dallas, Texas.
Trevor is a chocolate freak and
Trevor’s mom is allergic to
chocolate (hence the Vanilla Bean
chiffon cake).”
“As far as a singular visual
effect is concerned, our
favourite detail was the
floral chandeliers created
by Roxanne and her team.
The colour, the lighting
of the chandeliers, and
the effect during sunset
was amazing.” The
collection of custom
navy blue chandeliers
had been hand-strung
with thousands of
mokara orchids in pink
and orange, and was a
dramatic complement
to the low-profile table
arrangements.

The reception took place at the hotel’s Aubergine
Grill. “The combined effect of the decorative
elements was amazing,” remembers Kelly,
referring to the decor and floral by Celebrate
Events and Rembrandt Design, respectively.
Pink and orange floral chandeliers hung from
the ceiling, while natural table linens, Chiavari
chairs and navy runners offset large, elaborate
and colourful floral arrangements.
The custom branding of their stationery was
carried consistently throughout, with table
numbers, place cards, and beautiful menus
designed by Kyla Getty.

After the cutting of the cake, the guests were
ushered out to the now dark patio for the first
dance, as well as the father-daughter dance,
which took place under the light of sparklers
held by the guests.
The party was held in the hotel’s Firerock Lounge.
Guests danced to old favourites and new hits
played by DJ Leanne from Girl on Wax. “The
decor in the lounge carried the protea ‘burst’
theme with fiber optic centerpieces. The
photobooth was back and open for business,
with a long line up past midnight. Finally,
everyone enjoyed a buffet of gourmet pub-style
midnight snacks. The party lasted until the early
hours, and no one wanted it to end!” recalls
Kelly fondly.
The newlyweds spent an amazing three
weeks at two award-winning resorts in Fiji;
The Vatulele Resort on Vatulele Island,
and Namale Resort on Savusavu Island
(the location of one of the final stops for the
Bachelorette last season)!
The couple now reside in Vancouver where
Kelly is an Orthopaedic Surgeon, and subspecialist in Adult Orthopaedic Trauma at
Vancouver General Hospital. In addition, Kelly
is an Epidemiologist (MSc Harvard 2009) and
researcher at the University of British Columbia,
and is an Assistant Professor in the Department
of Orthopaedics, Faculty of Medicine. Trevor is
a financial planner. Kelly and Trevor now make
an annual visit on June 13th to Buffalo Bills in
Whistler, to have a drink under
the air conditioner!
