Code Enforcement Hard at Work
Code enforcement does a good job but
some times ya just need to cut people some
slack. Dr. Ronald Corbett served in our military, was wounded several times, lost parts
of his body, but yet he walks into a meeting
on his own. I’m not going to attempt to tell
you what artificial parts he has because he
does not talk too much about it, but I know
he has some titanium - I think to replace
something in his neck and throat.
Corbett was very upset when our illustrious president said “you did not build that”.
BUY
LOCAL
So Corbett decided to send a message, but
he should have checked for code violation.
Code enforcement showed up and said “take
down the sign.” They told him he could buy
a permit that would only be good for three
days. As you can see it is not in the way of
people walking. Being a true patriot it’s hard
to understand, especially given the circumstances knowing that he built this business
in spite of code enforcement and in spite
of our president who has never served his
country until he became president and look
what a great job he’s doing now.
I talked to the FairTax people who said
the city and the county are not very tolerant
when it comes to FairTax signs. The FairTax
sign you see in this picture had to go also.
It was in the planter and clearly not on city
property. I think Ron Corbett earned special
sign privileges. After all, the city and the
county sits on this land we call a free country. Oops, did I say something that was not
politically correct?

Industry Leaders React to Record Tourism Announcement
Carol Dover, Member of the VISIT
FLORIDA Board of Directors and President
& CEO of the Florida Restaurant & Lodging
Association said, “These record numbers indicate the hospitality and tourism industry in
Florida is reaching grander levels of success
under Governor Rick Scott’s leadership. We
are thrilled to see millions upon millions of
visitors taking advantage of world-class hotels, restaurants and attractions here in the
Sunshine State and we are excited to watch
these outstanding statistics continue to multiply in 2014 and in turn spur economic
growth.”
Mark Wilson, President & CEO of the
Florida Chamber of Commerce said, “Tourists have choices, and when they want to go
to paradise, they’re choosing Florida. Today’s record breaking tourism numbers are
further proof that Florida’s global role as a
top destination continues growing stronger,
and as a result, Florida’s families and small
businesses are benefiting.”
Rick McAllister, President & CEO of the
Florida Retail Federation said, “Florida’s retailers benefit from our state’s status as the
premier destination for visitors nationwide
and internationally, and the strong growth of
tourism helped retailers create 55,000 jobs
last year. We congratulate Florida’s leadership on the wise investment of resources in
tourism marketing, which is clearly paying
dividends for our state economy.”
John Sebree, Senior Vice President of
Public Policy for the Florida Association
of Realtors said, “A record year in tourism
certainly means more visitors to our theme
parks and beautiful beaches, but tourism
also goes hand in hand with the strength of
our real estate market. Many of the state’s
domestic and international visitors decide to
buy a Florida property and that, in turn, cre-

wrap up in Tallahassee, a spirit of
optimism prevails.
The opening day of
the 2014 Legislative Session is on
March 4th and we
have much to celebrate. Unemployment numbers continue to
improve, tourism numbers rise, home sales
improve, property values are moving up,
and state revenue forecasts improve. Modest
economic growth is budding. It’s a new day
in Florida and we have much to be thankful for as we see fiscal soundness paying
dividends of recovery from the long deep
recession. Legislators look forward to helping the folks with some tax relief, starting
with some roll back on motor vehicle fees. It
feels like some restoration is well underway
and it’s a welcome transition from the recent
sluggish economy. Thanks to all the Floridians who are hard at work and who have
demonstrated a “never give up” conviction.
It is also a delight to celebrate one of our
great universities bringing home the national
college football championship (Go Florida
State Seminoles!) and our outstanding local
athletes competing at the Winter Olympics.
It is always tempting to wring our hands
and complain about our current unmet challenges. But instead let’s take a victory lap
and give thanks for the persistent American
Spirit in our people that seeks to preserve
faith, family, freedom, and opportunity. It’s
a new day in North Central Florida and we
are not done yet! Onward and upward, Dennis Baxley

The city of Ocala and Newbridge, Ireland
signed a Twinning agreement in 2009 and
the friendship has grown every year since.
The concept of Twinning cities promote the
sharing of culture, education and economic
opportunity. This year fourteen delegates
from Newbridge have traveled to spend a
week in Ocala.
A tour for the group was hosted today by
Ocala Fire Rescue. The delegation learned
about fire service practices in the United
States, and a few brave willing visitors enjoyed the view of downtown Ocala from the
top a fire department ladder truck.
“It is certainly wonderful to meet and
learn about the commonalities of people in
this world, especially from a beautiful country such as Ireland,” stated Ocala Fire Chief
Bradd Clark during a visit at the fire station.

delegation standing with Fire Chief Bradd

CARING FOR YOUR EYES
By Thomas L.
Croley, M.D.
Board Certified
Ophthalmologist
Director of Central Florida Eye Institute
Lucentis
New Treatment
for Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration (SMD or ARMD)
is a deterioration of the macular. The macula
is located is the retina and is responsible for
our fine and central vision. Macular degeneration is generally brought on by the body’s
natural aging process. It is a common eye
disease associated with aging that gradually
destroys or decreases sharp, central vision.
This is one of the leading causes of legal
blindness and vision loss in senior citizens.
Close activities like reading, sewing, and
computer work may become very difficult
or even impossible. Macular degeneration
can also significantly affect distance vision
causing some people to give up their driving
privileges for their own safety as well as the
safety of others.
Studies have shown the following people
may be at risk:
• People with hypertension
• People exposed to direct sunlight over
time
• People who smoke
• People with a family history of macular
degeneration
Lucentis is an FDA approved drug treatment to block abnormal blood vessel growth
(VEGF) and leakage. These abnormal blood
vessels are very weak, they often grow and/
or leak causing damage and resulting in vision loss. The medication is injected into the
affected eye; it then spreads throughout the
inside of the eye working to stop the VEGF.
The eye is numbed prior to the injection and
most patients tolerate the treatment without
any significant discomfort. The overall result is a decrease in the formation of these
weak blood vessels and therefore the stabilization of your vision.
You may not notice any immediate improvements in your sight. This does not
mean that the treatment is not working. It
is a gradual process that may improve or
maintain your vision over time. For optimal
results, the treatment will need to be performed about every 4 weeks and needs to be
continued in order to stabilize your vision.
The “wet form” of macular degeneration is
a chronic disease and will require continued
treatment just like high blood pressure or
diabetes.
While people over the age of 50 are more
likely to develop this disease, a small percentage of people under this age can also
develop macular degeneration. It is impor-

tant that macular degeneration be detected
in the early stages. Most commonly it is
diagnosed during a yearly eye examination.
Sometimes specialized tests are required to
determine the type of Macular Degeneration
as well as the extent of existing damage. It
is suggested that between annual routine
eye examinations people take notice of their
vision out of each eye. An amsler grid is
given to patients who have been diagnosed
with Macular Degeneration. Several times
a week the patient should look at the grid,
noting any changes in their vision. They are
directed to contact their ophthalmologist immediately for an appointment if any changes
are noticed.
There are two common types of macular
degeneration:
“Dry” macular degeneration (atrophic)
is the most common and is caused by aging
and thinning of tissues of the macula. Vision loss is usually gradual. Loss of vision
may continue slowly, at times appearing
stable for years.
“Wet” macular degeneration accounts for
10% of all cases. It results from abnormal
blood vessels that leak fluid or blood and
blurred central vision. Vision loss may be
rapid and severe. “Wet macular degenera-
tion may sometimes be treated with laser
to seal off the leaking areas so the disease
does not progress resulting in further central
vision loss. The laser does cannot restore
vision already lost. Other treatments may
be available for a few patients with specific
forms of “wet” macular degeneration.
In the early stage, the condition may
be hardly noticeable by the patient. Many
times only one eye is affected. When the
central vision is affected in both eyes, loss
of central vision may be more noticeable.
The symptoms of macular degeneration may
be blurred words on a page, dark or empty
areas in the central vision, or straight lines
looking distorted.
Technology continues to advance quickly
and thankfully new treatments are being developed. Dr. Croley may detect early stages
of Macular Degeneration during a routine
dilated examination and provide prompt,
effective treatment. Therefore, annual eye
examinations are vital to insure a lifetime
of good, healthy vision. To schedule an appointment or for more information feel free

would Congress have to change the Social
Security Checks to Federal Benefits Checks?
They’re getting ready to screw someone namely the seniors! This way in a year, or in
the near future, they can vote on cutting the
Federal Benefit Package which will include
all federal expenses and they won’t be accused of robbing the Social Security fund.
Mark my words it’s coming. What makes
the Social Security fund so tough is that citizens pay into it all their lives and the money
is matched by the employer and it shows no
interest. They claim that SS is under funded
but the formula proves it’s not. For instance
. . . if you make $30K per year and 15% SS
is taken out and matched by your employer
and the money makes as low as 1% per year
you would have way over a million dollars
by retirement. If you did the same thing as a
private retirement investment and made 3%
per year interest you would clear more than
$30k per in retirement benefits if you take
only 3% per year.
I find it strange that the current administration says that Social Security is running
out of money but I have never heard them
say that welfare is running out of money.
I also heard an alarming rumor that the
Health Care Act says at age 76 there are no
benefits for cancer treatment. I will look into
this further. I guess we are just supposed to
die.
I heard the name Ed Mezvinsky used last
month. He was a former Democrat congressman from 1973 to 1977. He helped decided
the fate of Richard Nixon. He said Nixon
was a crook and should be impeached. He
was intertwined politically with the Clintons.
Mezvinsky had an affair with news reporter Marjorie Sue Margolies and later mar-
Newspaper Deadlines
Editorial & Ad Copy for April
ried her. In 1993, Marjorie Mezvinsky, then
a freshman Democrat in Congress, helped
pass President Bill Clinton’s controversial
tax package.
In 2001, Ed Mezvinsky was indicted and
pleaded guilty to 31 counts of bank fraud,
mail fraud, and wire fraud. He embezzled
more than $10 million dollars from people.
He was found guilty and served five years
and is now on probation.
Ed Mezvinsky is Chelsea Clinton’s father-in law.
On a local level, I had a reader ask if I
would run a story or an ad that says a garage cheated him and name the garage.
Obviously I can’t, but I have to admit I’m
tempted. When you take you car or anything
that needs repair some place, get a written
quote and make them stick to it. If you accuse someone of cheating you after the fact
most of the time you won’t win and it could
cost you in legal fees and for defamation of
character. Most garages are honest, but if
you let them upsell you “that’s your fault not
theirs”! If you are going to let a garage take
your engine out and take the engine apart to
find out what is wrong with it, you have no
choice but to trust in your mechanic. Shame
on you if you’re going to someone you don’t
trust or don’t know.
UNITED NATIONS ARMS TREATY
A 53 to 46 vote stopped us from being
part of the United Nations Arms Treaty. The
current administration has championed the
treaty but did not have the votes. If passed it
would affect private gun owners in the US,
it would also put a Global ban on import or
export of small arms. The international deal
would implement a gun registration of all
guns and ammunition in the US.
This was won by only seven votes, Senator Nelson from Florida voted for it. When
we get closer to the election I will print all
the names of the senators that voted for it.
These names are in the news every night.
The older I get the more gullible I get. A
friend ran for a political office, during the
election I observed a change in his thought
process and after elected I was the most disappointed person in the world. I learned an
important lesson and will never never do it
again! When people come complaining to
him he said “I did not know anything about
that” when I had talked to him about the issue just days before. Things that were not
OK before are suddenly OK now! Oh God
help him and me! I don’t know if we will
ever be friends again but my skin is a lot
thicker now. I wish him well!
You can’t choose where you came from,
but you can choose where you’re going and
who is going with you! I don’t know who
said that, I guess me.

From the Office of
THE MARION COUNTY SHERIFF
Bryan Blalock, 25, was arrested for aggravated child abuse. This case started on
Friday, January 3, 2014. The Marion County
Sheriff’s Office responded to Ocala Regional Medical Center in reference to a 2-yearold child who had severe head trauma. The
mother’s boyfriend, Bryan Blalock, stated
that the child had fallen in the bathtub; however, doctors knew the injuries were not
consistent with falling in a tub. Detectives
with the Special Investigations Unit interviewed Blalock on January 8, when he admitted to violently shaking the child several
times out of anger, until the victim passed
out. The child is now listed in critical condition at Shands Hospital.
--On Friday, January 10, 2014, the Marion
County Sheriff’s Office charged Dylan Martin with six counts of arson to vehicles, which
included 3 patrol cars. The first occurred at
10807 SW 57 Terrace Road on September
21, 2013, to a 2001 Honda that was parked
in a driveway. Three other vehicle fires occurred in the same community under the
same circumstances on September 29, October 7 and October 13, 2013, two cars being
law enforcement vehicles. On October 20,
2013, an officer was on stakeout in the same
community where he observed a white male
subject standing by a patrol vehicle pouring
something under the hood below the windshield wipers on the driver’s side. He gave
chase but lost the subject. The liquid turned
out to be a flammable accelerant. Several
calls were received with information that
indicated Dylan Martin was responsible for
these arson cases. They gave details that
Martin had shared with them about how he
set the fires and ran from law enforcement
officers. Dylan is a 21-year-old who is now
facing more than a dozen charges and his
bond amount is nearly $100,000.
--On 01-23-14, the Marion County Jail underwent an inspection by the Florida Model
Jail Standards Review Team and received
a 100% compliance rating for mandatory
and non-mandatory standards. The Review
Team, consisting of members from Alachua, Lake, Putnam, Citrus and Seminole
Counties, examined Inmate Housing, Food
Services, the Medical Facility, Security and
Control, Sanitation, Construction Standards
and Policies/Procedures. During the exit interview with team members, each inspector
was highly complimentary on the cleanliness
of the facility, the completeness of documentation and the professionalism displayed by
all Corrections personnel. Sheriff Blair and
all of the employees at the Marion County
Sheriff’s Office are very proud of the outcome of this Regional Peer Inspection. We
look forward to continuing in our efforts to
serve our community by providing a safe,
secure and frugal correctional facility.
--Louie Malone McGowin, 55, of Ocala
has been charged with one count of grand
theft from a person 65 years old or older.
According to the arrest affidavit, McGowin
used the threat of arrest to deprive the victim
of at least $50,000. McGowin is not a member of any law enforcement agency. Detectives learned that McGowin claimed to have
a friend in law enforcement and that the
friend would arrest the victim and her son, if
the victim didn’t give McGowin money. The
70-year-old victim told detectives McGowin
received several vehicles and was provided
with large amounts of cash. During the investigation, it was discovered McGowin did
not have a friend in law enforcement. Plus,
McGowin is accused of using the victim’s
bank card. Also, detectives learned that
McGowin fled to Indiana. Members of the
Porter County Sheriff’s Office were contacted in Harborview, Indiana. That agency
found McGowin and placed him under arrest
in reference to having an outstanding warrant in Marion County. McGowin is awaiting extradition to the Marion County Jail.

ONE PERSON’S OPINION
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Dear Editor:
SWEDEN!!
You heard right I said Sweden, the POSTER CHILD of SOCIALIZED MEDICINE.
For decades I had to listen to how wonderful things were in SWEDEN. Notice the
name. Well yesterday, it happened. I read the
following news: Swedes are FLOCKING to
buy private medical coverage. The wait for
care is soooo bad that anyone who can afford it is buying private policies. WHY???
Why then are we about to go down this same
dumb road. Are we that dense? Stupid?
Why would we do such a foolish thing to
ourselves? Isn’t Sweden enough of a lesson
in failure? Why would we strive for failure?
We can do it better at socialized medicine?
I DO NOT THINK SO. It does not work,
face reality.
Where else has it worked? England, Canada, France, Cuba? Name one!!!!! Make
your case. Convince me. I am not buying
it. Will it take your own personal denial of
care to convince you of the fallacy of socialized medicine. TOOO late I already know
people who are being denied, and some
who have passed away. Mammograms, and
pap smears are now once every 2 years, not
yearly. It begins. Inch by inch.
My strategy! Stay healthy. So far, so go.
Good luck to you. Some drug addict, or
obese person, or convict will probably get
your health dollars. Glad you are so magnanimous.

Celebrate Volunteers
April 6-13, 2014 / National Volunteer
Week
National Volunteer Week is a time to
celebrate people doing extraordinary things
through service. Established in 1974, National Volunteer Week focuses national attention
on the impact and power of volunteerism
and service as an integral aspect of our civic
leadership. The week draws the support and
endorsement of the president and Congress,
governors, mayors and municipal leaders,
as well as corporate and community groups
across the country.
Through programs such as the President’s
Volunteer Service Award, Daily Point of
Light Award and the Extra Mile – Points of
Light Volunteer Pathway, we recognize individuals, families, nonprofit organizations
and government entities and the tremendous
impact they are making on our country’s
most critical challenges year-round.
Marion County is blessed with numerous
nonprofit agencies and hundreds of volunteers. Our schools, hospitals and churches
depend on selfless folks who are willing to
donate time and talent.
While volunteers are not seeking recognition, setting aside one week each year to
celebrate their generous and dedicated lives
expresses not only our gratitude, but also enables us to recognize that we truly depend
on their service. We would be remiss if we
did not mention that the majority of our volunteers are senior citizens.
The next time you are at the library, thank
the volunteer who is shelving books. Take
a moment to acknowledge volunteers at the
hospital, our county and city parks, at our
schools, special events and anywhere and
everywhere volunteers are impacting your
life and our community.

Cracker Days
Cracker Days held at Rainbow Springs
State Park turned out to be a great weekend.
There were frontier people cracking whip,
a blacksmith hammering out metal work,
frontier music with string instruments and
singers, and a Cracker horse was on display.
They had a tanning area displaying hides of
different animals. The Cracker Camp was
set up just like the old days. The men and

women dressed the part and cooked over a
wood campfire. You could sample biscuits
made over the open fire, fresh made kettle
corn or sample fresh made butter right out
of the butter churn.
Thousands of people attended Saturday
and Sunday. The park rangers and the volunteers called the FORS kept things flowing.
There was plenty of parking and looking
at the automobile tags you could see there
were people from all over the United States.
Many attendees were local, some from the
Villages and Ocala.

Governor Rick Scott
FROM THE GOVERNOR’S DESK
From the Governor:
I am deeply saddened by the loss of Deputy Jonathan Scott Pine of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Pine lost his life
on Tuesday, February 11, 2014, when he
was fatally shot while responding to a burglary. The death of Deputy Pine is a solemn
reminder of the risks that law enforcement
officers across Florida take to ensure the
safety of all Florida citizens. In honor of
Deputy Pine, I hereby direct the flags of the
United States and the State of Florida to be
flown at half-staff at all local and state buildings, installations, and grounds throughout
Orange County, Florida, and the municipalities within, from sunrise to sunset on Saturday, February 15, 2014.

GOV. SCOTT: FLORIDA JOB DEMAND AT ALL-TIME HIGH
There are more than 282,000 openings
statewide; and January online job vacancies
increase by 5.1 percent over the year
TALLAHASSEE— Today, Governor
Rick Scott announced that according to Help
Wanted OnLine, the number of available job
openings in Florida increased in January
2014 compared to the previous January by
Tom Loury 804-1223
13,725, or 5.1 percent, for a total of 282,056
openings (seasonally adjusted). This is an
all-time high in the data series, which began in May 2005, and the third consecutive
month of record growth for job openings.
Job postings in Florida also increased over
the month compared to December 2013 by
1,588 openings or 0.6 percent.
Governor Rick Scott said, “This is the
third consecutive month that the number
of online job openings has reached an alltime high. The historic increase in openings
is further proof that the steps we are taking
to create jobs and opportunities for Florida
families are working. Florida has added
462,100 private sector jobs since December
2010, and we won’t stop until every Florida
family has the opportunity to achieve their
version of the American Dream.”
Florida’s labor demand has increased by
129,405 openings, or 84.8 percent, since
April 2009, when the number of openings
was the lowest, with only 152,651 openings.
According to the Help Wanted OnLine
data series, online job demand was highest
in the large metro cities, led by Miami, Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville, and Ft. Lauderdale. Among cities with the most openings,
the highest percentage gain over the year
was Ft. Myers, with 28.4 percent growth.
Florida Department of Economic Opportunity Executive Director Jesse Panuccio
said, “Another record month for job demand
shows that sound economic policy in Florida
is making a difference. Floridians now have
more opportunities to find the jobs that will
provide for their families and their future.”
Major occupational groups with the most
online ads in January were sales and related
occupations, healthcare practitioners and
technical occupations, office and administrative support occupations, and management occupations. The average annual salary of the top 20 occupations in demand in
January was just under $59,000.00.

Governor Rick Scott Encourages Students to Apply for the Gubernatorial Fellows Program
Tallahassee, Fla. – Governor Rick Scott
is encouraging college and university students to apply for the 2014-2015 Gubernatorial Fellows Program. Participation in
the program provides Florida students with
firsthand, high-level experience and insight
into how state government operates. Established in 2004, and endowed by the Hoffman Foundation in 2005, the program gives
Florida college and university students the
unique opportunity to work alongside state
government’s top staff for two semesters.
Governor Scott said, “The Gubernatorial Fellows Program provides an invaluable opportunity for Florida’s college and
university students to receive advanced, onthe-job training. I am committed to creating an opportunity economy in Florida that
prepares every student for success in college
and career. I encourage students interested
in public service and leadership to apply to
be a part of this program and learn the skills
needed to be ready for the workforce.”
Gubernatorial Fellows are assigned to
the Executive Office of the Governor and
the Governor’s agencies, based on their major or area of concentration. Fellows work a
minimum of 20 hours per week and are paid
for their time on the job. Fellows will also
receive tuition waivers from their college or
university to cover the cost of their tuition
as they continue their studies throughout the
program year.
Fellows participate in a weekly lecture
series, where they meet face-to-face with
prominent leaders, including Governor
Scott, Lieutenant Governor Lopez-Cantera,
Cabinet officers, agency heads and other top
government officials. Fellows also participate in policy study trips throughout Florida
and in Washington, D.C. These trips are
designed to broaden the Fellows’ exposure
to state government and enhance the experience of all participants.
To be eligible for a Gubernatorial Fellowship, candidates should be enrolled at a
Florida college or university, as a rising junior or senior, or a graduate student. Applicants should exhibit strong leadership, written and oral communication skills, community activism and a desire to serve the people
of Florida. Approximately 12 students from
around the state will be selected based on a
competitive application process.
Students can visit www.FloridaFellows.
com to learn about the expectations and
requirements of the program, as well as
read testimonials from alumni. Interested
students must apply online, and the site includes complete information about the recruitment process.
Applications are due by Monday, March
