Grandmont Rosedale community enters into PATCH contest
Two community groups entered
into the newly established citywide contest known as PATCH.
The PATCH contest was established to inspire community
groups to clean up structurefree vacant lots in order to help
beautify the City of Detroit and
to encourage residents to turn
vacant lot into productive
“green” spaces. The rules of the
contest were simple—clean-up
a structure free lot and submit
before and after pictures. One
winner will be selected to win
$2500. In the Grandmont Rosedale community two groups
including the Grandmont #1
Improvement Association and
the Grandmont Rosedale Devel-

opment Corporation (GRDC)
participated in the contest that
closed on June 16. The groups
are now awaiting the announcement of the winner.

Trash Talkin’ Kick Off is a Smashing Success
Nearly 30 volunteers from the
Grandmont Rosedale community came out to kick-off the
Trash Talkin’ events—twice
monthly get togethers for coffee & clean-ups as part of the
Grandmont Rosedale: Love
Where You Live anti-litter campaign. Volunteers met at Always Brewing Detroit for a free
cup of coffee and to grab cleanup supplies. They were joined
by Detroit-based rapper, Black
Tear, who performed an original piece about the anti-litter
initiative. Following the performance, the volunteers
headed to a vacant property in
Minock Park and cleaned up an
alley for about 45 minutes. The
group removed about two truck
loads of garbage and yard
waste from the alley.
The next Trash Talkin’ event will
take place at 9 am on Saturday,
July 13 at Just a Bit Eclectic, a
newly opened Tea Shop on
McNichols & Sunderland. Volunteers will receive a free cup
of tea and will then venture out
to a clean-up site en force.
