“This is a major step in the history of the Latin Fury series, evolving from a niche
audience to a mainstream sports attraction,” said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum,
chairman on Top Rank. “The Alamodome will be set up for 17,000 people and to fill those
seats we are featuring the biggest names in Mexican boxing.”
Chavez Jr (40-0-1, 30 KOs), of Culiacan, México, is the son of Mexico’s greatest
fighter Julio César Chávez. Chávez, 24, took up the “family business” in 2003, winning a
four-round decision in his professional debut. Seven years later, the reigning WBC Latino
super welterweight champion and superior gate attraction is poised to make his own mark
in the boxing world. In preparation he has enlisted legendary trainer Freddie Roach to
take him to the next level. Last year Chávez, the WBC’s No. 1 super welterweight
contender, won 10-round unanimous decisions over Luciano Cuello and Troy Rowland and
stopped Jason LeHoullier in the first round. Making his 2009 achievements even more
impressive was the fact that Chávez’s opponents had a combined record of 69-3-1 when
he defeated them.
Duddy (29-1, 18 KOs), a native of Derry, Ireland who also resides in Queens, New
York, has been a Madison Square Garden fan favorite and box office attraction for most of
the last decade. He made his Texas debut on March 13 at Cowboys Stadium, winning a
10-round decision over Mexican super welterweight champion Michael Medina. The
former WBC Continental Americas middleweight champion boasts a record that includes
victories over former world champion Yory Boy Campas, former world title challenger
Howard Eastman and rugged contenders Matt Vanda and Anthony Bonsante. Duddy is
currently world-rated No. 8 by the WBC.
Morel (42-2, 21 KOs), of San Juan Puerto Rico, captured the WBA flyweight title in
2000, winning a 12-round decision over defending champion Sornpichai Pisnurachank.
His three-year reign as champion included five successful defenses. Since losing the title,
Morel has won nine of his last ten bouts, including two NABO junior bantamweight and one
NABO bantamweight title fights. After elevating himself to becoming the WBO’s No. 1
bantamweight contender, “Little Hands of Steel” captured the WBO interim bantamweight
title, winning a vicious 12-round split decision against the legendary two-division world
champion Gerry Peñalosa in February.
Arce (53-6-1, 40 KOs), of Los Mochis, México, is one of México’s most colorful
sports personalities attracting legions of fans from both sides of the border as much for his
ring entrances as for his ring performances. He backs up his non-stop talk with non-stop
action. A veteran of 15 world championship fights and eight interim world championship
fights, winning 11 and all eight, respectively, it’s hard to find a year he hasn’t held a world
title dating back to 1998 when he captured the WBO junior flyweight championship belt.
He captured the vacant WBO junior bantamweight title in his last fight, in January, winning
a technical decision over Angky Angkota. The fight was stopped in the seventh-round
after an accidental clash of heads produced a severe cut over Angkota’s right eye. It went
to the scorecards with Arce leading on all of them 60-54, 60-54 and 58-56.
Barrera (65-7, 43 KOs), of México City, is considered the greatest Méxican fighter of
his era. With world title victories over Erik Morales (2), Naseem Hamed, Johnny Tapia,
and Paulie Ayala, who could argue? He has won 21 of the 25 world championship fights
winning multiple world titles at 122, 126 and 130 pounds. During a four-year stretch
beginning in December 2000, Barrera fought nine current or former world champions in a
row, winning eight of them. This will be “The Baby Face Assassin’s” first fight in the Lone
Star State since his 2005 second-round knockout victory of Mzonke Fana, in defense of
his WBC super featherweight title, in El Paso.
Sanchez (19-3-2, 9 KOs), from Tianguistenco, México, is the nephew and
namesake of former WBC featherweight champion and Hall of Famer Salvador Sanchez.
A professional for five years, Sanchez, 24, enters this fight riding a three-year, nine-bout
winning streak. His last victory was in March in Cowboys Stadium, a six-round knockout of
Jaime Villa.

JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ JR.
Age: 24 (2-16-86)
Residence: Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico
Birthplace: Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico
Record: 41-0-1, 30 KOs
Height: 5’11”
Reach: 73”
Stance: Righthanded
Manager: Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. (father)
Trainer: Freddie Roach (four-time Boxing Writers Association of America “Trainer of the Year”)
JULIO CESAR CHAVEZ JR. (41-0-1, 30 KOs)…
• Ranked WBC #1at 154 pounds…
• WBC Latino super welterweight champion...
• Former WBC Continental Americas super welterweight champion, one successful defense...
• Former WBC Youth super welterweight champion...
At the age of 24, Julio is a six-year pro. The WBC’s No. 1 ranked contender at 154 pounds, he is the
oldest son and namesake of the legendary “El Grande Campeon Mexicano” - former four-time world
champion and future Hall of Famer Julio Cesar Chavez.
Julio Jr. had very little amateur experience but has stayed active in the ring, made good progress,
and become a significant draw at the gate on his own.
This is his first fight with trainer Freddie Roach. Julio told The Record, “I know he is a quality trainer
and he was named the best ‘Trainer of the Year,’ and it’s not only for his work with Manny Pacquiao. I think
Roach is a trainer who makes you work hard, but makes you get better and I have no doubt that I’ll be even
better when I make my return in Texas. [End The Record item]
He is coming off a 10 round unanimous decision win against Troy Rowland in his last fight in
November, 2009. Julio won by decisive scores of 99-91, 98-92, 97-93.
In his previous fight in September, 2009, he scored a sensational first-round TKO win against Jason
LeHoullier.
Fightwriter.com’s Graham Houston reported [excerpts]: Chavez, now...looking stronger than I have
seen him, looked very good in blowing out the normally tough Jason LeHoullier in the first round. I did think
there was a decent chance of Chavez getting a late-round stoppage but I never thought he would destroy
LeHoullier in two minutes, 43 seconds. The multi-tattooed trier from Maine moved in behind the jab and
wasn’t doing at all badly until Chavez dumped him with a perfectly thrown left hook. Although LeHoullier got
up, he was out of the fight. Chavez’s follow-up barrage was impressive. There was no mistaking the delight
of the Mexican crowd. JCC Jr is a very big deal south of the border. [End Houston item]
When Julio Junior was born in February, 1986, his father had a professional record of 49-0. He had
won the WBC super featherweight world title 17 months earlier and made three successful title defenses.
Julio Senior won WBC super lightweight world title at the age of 22 in his fourty-fourth pro fight.
At a lanky 5’11” tall, Junior does not physically resemble his 5’7” father, but there are some
similarities in their careers and styles at this point. Both had very little amateur experience, both made their
pro debuts at 17, and both “learned on the job” early in their pro careers.

between the lefthanded and righthanded stances in the following rounds, consistently outworked Julio, and
appeared to build a lead on the scorecards, but Julio kept pressing forward, landed the harder punches, and
gradually wore him down; Celaya’s left eye was swollen nearly shut by the 7th round, and he was cut over his
right eye, as well; Julio scored a knockdown with a right hand in the 8th round - Celaya got up but motioned

AMATEUR, PERSONAL BACKGROUND: From chavez360.com [excerpts]: Julio Cesar Chavez Carrasco
was born on February 16, 1986, to legendary boxing champion Julio Cesar Chavez Gonzalez and Amalia
Carrasco. At the time, his father had already won fifty professional fights and had three successful defenses
of his WBC super featherweight title. It wasn’t long before Julito started going with him to watch him fight, and
the boy would be seen carried around the ring after his father’s victories. Early on, Julito developed a love for
the sport, even though he didn’t completely realize the significance of his father’s ring presence.
Though the young Chavez was so fond of boxing, he never thought of becoming a boxer. Growing
up, he played soccer, baseball and basketball and at one point even thought of becoming a professional
baseball player.
During high school, Julio spent a year in Riverside, California, living with his mother, but longed to be
back in Mexico. Not only did he want to go back to Mexico, but he had decided he wanted to box as well. At
first, Julio Sr. was set against the idea of his son becoming a boxer, but Julio Jr. was even more determined.
In a way, his whole life had been leading up to it, and he couldn’t think of anything he wanted more. With a
little help from his uncle Rodolfo Chavez, who would become his manager, Junior was finally able to
convince his parents to give him a shot. [End chavez360.com item]

when someone in the gym suggested that he get in the ring and give it a try…
Julio attended high school in Riverside, California, during his junior year but returned to Culiacan the
next year…
He said, “I’ve always liked to box, even when I was very small, but I never thought I would become a
professional fighter. When we were young, we saw all the attention our father got, but we never really

“Ireland’s” JOHN DUDDY

“Ireland’s” JOHN DUDDY (29-1, 18 KOs)...
• Ranked WBC #8, WBO #14 at 160 pounds...
• Former WBC Continental Americas middleweight champion, one successful defense...
At the age of 30, John is a six-year pro. A contender at 160 pounds, he has an aggressive, hardhitting style in the ring and always makes exciting fights.
John has won three fights in a row since his only loss as a pro in April, 2009.
He is coming off a 10 round decision win against Mexican super welterweight champion Michael
Medina in his last fight on March 13.
After the fight, Dan Rafael wrote on ESPN.com [excerpts]: Duddy, the popular Irishman living in New
York, scored the split decision against Mexico’s Medina in a fight that he should have won unanimously.
Although they were credited with throwing and landing roughly the same amount of punches, Duddy was
clearly the heavier puncher. But split decision or not, he got out with the deserved victory.... Duddy...came
out of the fight relatively unmarked and not cut, as he often has been.... [End Rafael item]
John has developed a very strong following on both sides of the Atlantic – he has drawn capacity
crowds in New York and Massachusetts, and at National Stadium in Dublin and King’s Hall in Belfast.
Thomas Hauser wrote on Secondsout.com [excerpts]: Duddy...is articulate, handsome,
charismatic.... Most of Duddy’s fights have been in New York. He has been the headline attraction at
Madison Square Garden three times and in the featured undercard bout in the big arena on two occasions.
“That means a great deal to me,” he says. “There are a lot of fighters out there who are as good as me, but
no one has better fans. For a guy from Derry to headline at Madison Square Garden is something special.
New York has been very good to me. It’s my home for boxing. But at the end of the day, Ireland will always
be my home.” [End Hauser item]
Fight by Fight – 2010 - in his last fight on 3-13-10 in Arlington, TX, he won a 10 round split decision against
Mexican super welterweight champion Michael Medina (23-1-2): the bout was on the undercard of the
Manny Pacquiao-Joshua Clottey main event at Cowboys Stadium; it was a good, fast-paced fight, but John
consistently landed the harder punches and rocked Medina with several right hands; Medina was penalized
one point for low blows in the 8th round; scored 96-93, 96-93 Duddy, 96-93 Medina; after the fight, John said,
“I wasn’t as sharp as I wanted to be. He hit me with some nice shots, but they weren’t as clean as they
looked. He never hurt me.”...
On 1-23-10 in New York, NY, he TKO’d Juan Astorga (14-3-1): the fight was was on the undercard of the
Juan Manuel Lopez-Steven Luevano main event, and John quickly overpowered Astorga; John scored two
knockdowns in the 1st round – the first with a right hand to the head, the second with a left hook to the body –
and the referee stopped the fight without a count at 1:55...
2009 – on 10-10-09 in New York he won an 8 round unanimous decision against Michi Munoz (22-3): the

the 5th, and rocked him with an uppercut in the 6th round; John was cut over his left eye by a clash of heads
in the 9th round, which also cut Howe; scored 100-90 on all three scorecards; after the fight, John said, I
caught him with a lot of shots and thought he was ready to go a few times. But he showed he is a true
warrior. He’s as tough as they come. I just wanted to go out and show what I learned - I could box, I didn’t
have to brawl all the time. I made a point that I don’t have to be brave all of the time - just because I can take
a punch doesn’t mean I have to. I have big plans and I’m still undefeated. I used my jab a lot tonight. I’m
hoping to get a shot at a world title.”...
On 2-23-08 in New York he won a 10 round majority decision against Walid Smichet (17-3-3): the fight was
on the undercard of the Wladimir Klitschko-Sultan Ibragimov main event, and it was a gruelling battle; both
started fast and there were some good exchanges in the 1st round; Smichet cut John under his left eye in the
2nd, rocked him with a series of right hands in the 3rd round, then cut him over his right eye in the 4th round
and over his left eye in the 5th round; but Smichet tired in the middle and late rounds, and John rallied; he
consistently outworked Smichet and finished the fight strongly; some ringsiders thought the decision could go
either way, and some booed the announcement of the scores - 98-92, 98-92, 95-95; after the fight, John said,
“I made it difficult on myself. I wasn’t letting my punches go like I normally do. I think I was pressing. I wasn’t
letting my hands work for me. I trained a lot better than my performance. I’m happy, but I’m disappointed in
the performance. You’re always happy with the win, but I’m not happy with the way I did it.'”...

back strongly in the late rounds – he rocked Eastman with a left hook in the 9th and outworked him in the 10th
round; scored 96-94 by the scoring referee; after the fight, John said, “I think I did enough and showed
improvement. I moved my head more and took his shots comfortably.”...
On 10-20-07 in Dublin, IRE, he TKO’d late substitute Prince Arron (10-2): the fight headlined at National

outworked Strickland, who fought mostly to survive; scored 100-89, 100-89, 100-90; after the fight, John said,

keep him on the run. There was no doubt in my mind I won the fight.”...
On 3-16-07 in New York he won a technical decision against Anthony Bonsante (29-8-3): the fight

Square Garden, and drew a capacity crowd - all supporters of John; it was a fast-paced, exciting fight, and
very close; the momentum shifted back and forth - John started fast, but Campas rocked him several times in

the bell; John rallied in the next two rounds, but was cut over his left eye by a clash of heads in the 5th; both

me the whole fight. I knew he was tough and would come at me. I didn't have to chase him. I gave it my
heart. I gave it my best.”...
WON VACANT WBC CONTINENTAL AMERICAS M TITLE - on 3-16-06 in New York, NY, he TKO’d Shelby
Pudwill (21-2-1): the fight headlined on St. Patrick’s Day eve in The Theater at Madison Square Garden - the
bar in the arena had to close two hours early when revelers drank it dry; John scored three knockdowns in
the 1st round, and the referee stopped the fight at 1:51; after the fight, John said, “I didn’t in my wildest
dreams think I was going to walk into Madison Square Garden and knock out a guy with 21 wins in the first
round. The first punch, the left hook, shook him to his boots and it was just a matter of not getting too wild
after that. I tried to pick my shots and make every punch count, and I’m just delighted I was able to put on a
show like this for all the people who came to the arena. To have that kind of support behind you is fantastic.
It’s a fighter’s dream to have had the experience I’ve had here tonight.”…
On 2-4-06 in Boston, MA, he won a 10 round unanimous decision against Julio Jean (7-6-1): the fight
headlined at The Castle; John constantly pressed forward, outworked Jean, and dominated the fight; scored
100-90, 100-90, 99-91; after the fight, John said, “Tonight, I had a very durable and very crafty opponent. We
knew that he was a very slick fighter, had some tricks up his sleeve, and was durable. I felt good. I’m a
realist, and I know that every fight is not going to be an all-action, explosive knockout. He took a lot of my
punches and he made me work. He made me think a lot more than a lot of my other opponents have, so I
really enjoyed the experience. I probably learned more from this fight than I did in my first 14.”…
2005 - on 12-15-05 in Hollywood, FL, he TKO’d Wilmer Mejia (15-4-2): John dominated the fight, wore down

was very tough and durable. He’d had 36 pro fights. This is a tough game, and you don’t have that many if
you’re a part-timer. He caught me a couple of times, all right, usually just after I thought I’d hurt him. I hit him
with a body shot in the second and I could hear the air come rushing out of him. I tried to go after him again,
but he became very careful about covering up his body.”…
On 9-17-05 in Mansfield, MA, he knocked out Joe Brady (13-4-1): the fight headlined at the Dana Barros

the bout was on the undercard of the Miguel Cotto-Muhammad Abdullaev main event, and it was a fastpaced, exciting fight; John pressed forward and consistently outworked Thompson, but Thompson gave a
good effort and scored with occasional right hands; scored 80-72 on all three scorecards; looking back, John
said, “I’m glad my first fight to go the distance was at Madison Square Garden with all those people there to
see that I’m not just a bull, but a boxer-puncher. He fought a smart fight and he took some good shots. As
much as I may spar eight or 10 rounds in the gym, I needed to confirm that I could go eight rounds in a fight. I
finished so strong that I was happier than if I’d won by first-round knockout.”…

sensational performance - both came out slugging, and John scored a knockdown with two left hooks in the
first 20 seconds of the 1st round that dropped Pierre to his hands and knees; Pierre got up, but John
staggered him repeatedly with a series of punches, then scored another knockdown and the referee stopped
the fight without a count at 1:23; after the fight, John said, “When I saw him wobble the first time, I knew that I
had him in trouble. I said to myself, ‘I have to hit this guy so we can put an end to this.’ I threw the jab and
when I seen him move to dodge it, that’s when I hit him with the left hook. I was really looking forward to this
fight. I am learning to step it up, and the game plan worked perfectly. I was very excited to be here fighting on
ESPN2. We’re going to continue to step up our competition, and take things one fight at a time. In order to be

Dunnings kept John off-balance with movement and gave a good effort; John was penalized one point in the

AMATEUR, PERSONAL BACKGROUND: From Secondsout.com, by Thomas Hauser [excerpts]: Duddy’s
interest in boxing began with his father, a club fighter in the early 1980s who posted a 3 and 4 record with 1
KO.
“He took me to the gym,” Duddy recalls. “Watching him is how I got involved with boxing. I started
training for the fun of it when I was five and had my first fight at seven. It was against a 12-year old who quit
after the first round. When I got in the ring, everybody was looking at me. And when they raised my hand, I
liked that. I liked it a lot. From then on, I loved boxing.
“My father never put pressure on me to box,” Duddy continues. “He allowed me to do it, but he also
encouraged me to play other sports and do other things. And he always made it clear that I could stop if I
wanted to. But sooner or later, the other things I did would fall by the wayside and boxing stayed with me. No
other place in the world smells like a boxing gym. It’s unique, I love it. The sweat, the leather, it’s the smell of
success.” Duddy smiles, which he does a lot. “I remember my mother saying to me, ‘If that’s the smell of
success, go outside and put a hose on it.’”
Duddy fought in 130 amateur bouts, winning 100 of them. He had some success in international
competition, but eventually suffered from burnout, a common affliction among fighters who start young.
“It was the same thing again and again,” he remembers. “The same bad hotels, the same planes, the
same busses, the same bad food. It wasn’t fun anymore, and I wasn’t getting better as a fighter.”
Duddy came to America in March 2003. “That was my dream,” he says. “I’d been to America a few
times as an amateur and knew this was the place to be. The best trainers, the best sparring, the best of
everything in boxing is here.”
Asked to describe himself further, Duddy observes, “I try to keep things simple. I don’t look too far
into the future. I’m confident and straightforward. I don’t like liars and phonies. I’m very focused on my career.
And I believe that a fighter needs passion, not cruelty, to be great.” [End Hauser item]

After the fight, Dan Rafael wrote on ESPN.com [excerpts]: For more than a decade, Arce has been
one of boxing’s most exciting gladiators. He has engaged in countless exciting brawls and regularly fights
through bloody cuts, all while being one of the more charismatic and engaging fighters outside the ring.
Along the way he claimed two versions of the junior flyweight title and interim titles at flyweight and junior
bantamweight. Arce...dominated Angkota.... Although Arce took some shots - when doesn’t he? - he was
handling Angkota, pressing him into corners and firing away. In the seventh round, however, an accidental
head butt opened a cut over Angkota’s right eye and as blood dripped down the side of his face, the bout
was called off after the ringside doctor had a look at the wound. [End Rafael item]
Outside of the ring, Jorge has a very engaging personality and charisma, confidence and energy to
spare. Inside the ring, he has an aggressive style, skills and power, and always makes exciting fights.
He became a crossover star in Mexico a few years ago after appearing on the reality TV shows “Big
Brother V.I.P.” and “Dancing for a Dream.” He also recently completed another reality TV show, “El Desafio.”
(The Challenge)
Jorge won the WBO light flyweight (108 pounds) world title at the age of 19 in December, 1998, and lost
it in his second defense the following July. He won the WBC light flyweight world title at 23 in July, 2002, and
made seven successful title defenses. He vacated the title to move up in weight and won the WBC interim
flyweight (112) world title in July, 2005. He vacated that title after five successful defenses to move up in
weight again.
He enters the ring wearing a black cowboy hat with a lollipop in his mouth. He said in an earlier interview,
“When I started boxing, I would always get real nervous before fights. They said the lollipop would help sooth
my nerves. So, ever since I started, I always had the lollipop. I just started wearing the hat the last few years.
The people where I’m from in Sinaloa, everybody wears those hats. It identifies me, where I come from. I also
wear a rosary that I put on myself. It’s a gold one that my mother gave me.”
Regarding his nickname, he said, “I was a very hyperactive kid. I was always getting in trouble
somewhere here and there, you know, pulling girls’ hair, making everybody cry, hitting them. They were
saying, ‘Man, this kid is a real menace.’ So, Travieso means ‘menace.’ ”

AMATEUR, PERSONAL BACKGROUND: Jorge said, “I was born in Los Mochis, Sinaloa. There’s four
children in my family, all boys. Two are older than me, my younger brother is a professional boxer, too. His
name is Francisco ‘Panchito” Arce. I bought a store for one of my older brothers where he sells candy. My
brother, Milton, really loves baseball. He played a couple of years in the minor leagues.
“My father was a farm worker, he worked in the fields. He hardly works anymore. I bought him one of
those buses that goes around the city, like a tour bus, and he makes money out of that.
“I started boxing because, I think, my father gave it to me. When he was growing up, he wanted to be
a boxer and it didn’t happen for him. He came from a family of 20 - there were 20 total in his family. They
were very poor, so they made him work and he never got a chance to become a boxer, which was his dream.
He transmitted that to me, maybe not verbally, but by the way he behaved towards boxing. I think that’s
where I picked it up from, I wanted to become a boxer for him.
“I started picking up boxing and I enjoyed boxing. One day, my dad was in a very bad accident where
he worked, he almost got killed. That’s when I decided, ‘You know what? I’m going to do something special
for him, I’m going to turn into a boxer.’ Right now, everything I do is for him, even the world championship is
for him. Winning a championship was very important for me and for him.
“When I was about 10 years old, my mother was really worried about me. She thought something
was wrong with me, I was so hyper all the time. I couldn’t stop, I wouldn’t slow down. So she talked to a
doctor, a psychologist, and he said, ‘All you need to do is get him in a sport. Anything, karate, anything you
can put him in.’ And I said, ‘I’ll go into boxing.’ I was there two years. The first week I was there, they put me
in a tournament and I won it. I started liking it, but my father had the accident when I was 12, and that’s when
I decided, ‘You know what? I’m going to do this for you.’ So, I started at 10 and at 12, I was really dedicated
to it. I had about 45 amateur fights. I think I lost twice, one by disqualification.
“I won some national tournaments, some state tournaments. I was actually up for the 1996 Olympic
team, I ended fighting Martin Castillo. [note: Castillo went on to win the WBA super flyweight world title] We
fought in the semi-final fight and Castillo won. But everybody knows that Arce won that fight, it’s just that
Castillo was already a member of the Olympic team and they didn’t want him losing to me.

He is a certain future Hall of Famer.
Marco has been in some of the most exciting fights of the last decade and given tremendous
performances time after time.
After Marco’s fight against Juan Manuel Marquez in, 2007, Dan Rafael wrote on ESPN.com: “This is
what boxing is all about -- two of the best in the world giving their all with the stakes high and producing an
action-packed fight that thrilled the fans.”
Marco’s first fight against Erik Morales was named “2000 Fight of the Year” by The Ring, and the fifth

punches; the fight was stopped on the cut after the 5th round and went to the scorecards – Khan led by
scores of 50-45, 50-45, 50-44...

Marquez staggered Marco with a right hand midway through the 7th, then rocked him with a series of
punches, but Marco came back and floored Marquez with a right hand later in the round – the referee ruled it
was a push (replays showed it was a clean knockdown), then penalized Marco one point for punching
Marquez while he was on the canvas; but Marquez came back strongly – he cut Marco over his left eye in the
8th round, rocked him with a right hand early in the 10th round, and swept the 10th, 11th, and 12th rounds on all
three scorecards; although some observers thought the fight was closer, Marquez won by scores of 118-109,
116-111, 116-111; after the fight, Marco said, “I did the necessary things to win. He hit me four times below

closer - 117-111, 115-113, 115-113; after the fight, Marco said, “I gave him a boxing lesson. It’s exactly what

many observers thought Juarez deserved to win; the fight was first announced as a draw, but an error was
found in adding up the scorecards and the scores were corrected - 115-113, 115-114 Barrera, 115-114
Juarez; after the fight, Marco said, “I always respect the decision of the judges. They added the scores

didn’t matter that we had worked with each other in the gym before. I knew my speed and ability would be too
much for him. We knew he was gonna come out fast and he did and put pressure. But with good boxing and
good movement, you’ll prevail. I didn’t underestimate him, I don’t underestimate any of the fighters. We knew
he was tough and because of my ability we were able to come through.”...

scores of 90-79, 88-81, 88-81; after the fight, Marco said, “I also want to congratulate Paulie Ayala, a true
warrior of the ring. He was brave and showed a lot of courage. I thought he was very game. I was surprised

former professional fighter…
Marco studied law at the University of Mexico, but quit when he was training for his first fight against
Morales; he said, “After the Morales fight, I knew I had to live and breathe boxing. Maybe I’ll do it again
sometime, but right now, this is my life.”…Marco was married in April, 2001, and has one son…
Before Marco’s fight in November, 2003, it was disclosed that he had brain surgery in 1997 - a
neurologist in Mexico City repaired malformed blood vessels, and inserted small titanium plates to protect the
area; Marco said, “It was not something that was major. I had a malformation. It was treated, and it was fixed.
If there was any type of major concern or I was in danger, I would have retired and hung up the gloves a long
time ago. I have seen the best doctors in the world. I have been given the green light by every doctor. No one
can find any problem.”…
STRENGTHS: Has exceptional offensive skills and punching power…tough, determined and confident…has
an exciting style, throws hard punches in combinations…he can wear down his opponents with relentless
pressure, or box and move effectively…a devastating body puncher…has good stamina and a solid chin…is

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: 73 fights…475 total rounds…142 world championship rounds…
AVERAGE LENGTH OF BOUTS: 6.5 rounds…
KNOCKOUT PERCENTAGE: 66 %…

SALVADOR SANCHEZ II
Age: 24 (9-20-85)
Residence: Tianguistenco, Mexico (state), Mexico
Birthplace: Tianguistenco, Mexico, Mexico
Record: 19-3-2, 9 KOs
Height: 5’7.5”
Stance: Righthanded
Manager: Grant Elvis Phillips
Trainer: Abel Sanchez (no relation)
SALVADOR SANCHEZ II (19-3-2, 9 KOs)...
• Ranked WBC #27 at 126 pounds...
At the age of 24, Salvador is a four-year pro. A young prospect at 126 pounds, he has won eight
fights in a row dating back to December, 2007.
He is the nephew and namesake of the legendary former WBC featherweight world champion and
Hall of Famer Salvador Sanchez.
He is coming off a sixth-round TKO win against Jaime Villa in his last fight in March, 2010 – the
bout was one of the supporting fights for the Manny Pacqiuao-Joshua Clottey main event at Cowboys
Stadium.
After the fight, Dan Rafael wrote on ESPN.com [excerpts]: The resemblance Sanchez has to his
uncle is uncanny. Sanchez is the 24-year-old nephew of the former featherweight champion and Hall of
Famer with same name. He wears his hair the same, fights in the same weight class and wears the same
short shorts. Sanchez fought pretty well against Villa, whom he put away with a crushing body attack. In the
sixth round, Sanchez drilled Villa with a body shot to knock him down. Another body blow during the followup attack dumped Villa to a knee, where he gasped for air and took the full count. [End Rafael item]
Manager Grant Elvis Phillips said, “Salvador wanted to be a fighter since he was little, and his
parents did not want him to fight. They wanted him to go to school, similar to the original Salvador Sanchez’
story - his parents didn’t want him to be a boxer, either. They wanted him to go to college.
“But the kid kept insisting on it and when he turned 18, his parents said, ‘Okay, if that’s what you
want to do, we’ll support you.’ That’s when he had his amateur fights, and then turned pro.
“Salvador wears his uncles actual trunks and robes. I own the Salvador Sanchez collection, which
is for a museum we’re putting together, so I have all his robes and trunks and gloves, shoes, and all that
stuff. I never thought in a million years we’d be using them.
“Salvador and his uncle are the same exact size – same height, same weight, same body frame,
same shoe size. They’re identical.”
Salvador’s uncle won the WBC featherweight world title in February, 1980, and made nine
successful title defenses. He had a record of 44-1 with 32 knockouts before his death in a car accident at
the age of 23 in 1982. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1991.
Key Fights – 2010 - in his last fight on 3-13-10 in Arlington, TX, he TKO’d Jaime Villa (8-7-2): the fight was
