Kendall® Heavy-Duty Engine Oil with KLEEN Oil Systems
Case Study
Kendall® Heavy-Duty Engine Oil
with KLEEN Oil Systems
and Regular Maintenance Sustain Engine Life and
Longevity for Cam-Scott Transport Ltd.
Preventative maintenance helps to provide an efficient, reliable
and safe fleet from one of Canada’s leading freight transporters.
Family-Run Success
Cam-Scott Transport Ltd., located in Pickering, Ontario, has been a dominant force within the fleet industry since opening
in 1985. Glenn Weddel, the second-generation president of this family-owned and operated business, has worked to build
a company that prides itself on offering dependable, reliable service — specifically, the transportation of contracted loads
of temperature-sensitive goods throughout eastern Canada. Due mainly to customer loyalty and a strong team, Weddel
was recently able to introduce Cam-Scott International, expanding the business to delivering fresh, frozen and dry goods
throughout Canada and the United States.
Garage Manager Brian Gilroy and his team of licensed mechanics personally maintain the fleet of over 132 tractors, 48’
and 53’ refrigerated trailers and straight trucks at Cam-Scott’s on-site service facility. This fleet of specialized equipment
travels over 180,000 km (approximately 112,000 miles) per year; therefore, it is vital that Cam-Scott practice a stringent
maintenance program.
KLEEN Oil Systems
Over the past two decades, Cam-Scott has created and perfected a highly efficient way of prolonging engine life that
also increases productivity, decreases manual labor time, saves money and overall proves to be much better for the
environment. This “KLEEN oil system,” which employs an extra filter, also catches water to avoid acid build up that can
damage the bearings.
Utilizing a combination of the internally
developed KLEEN oil system and the
high-quality Kendall product, Cam-Scott
has had impressive success with
changing oil and fuel filters every 20,000
km (approximately 12,500 miles). At this
time, they also do a full inspection of the
vehicle, tend to any noticeable problems
and extract an oil sample for testing. Every
80,000 km (approximately 50,000 miles),
Gilroy replaces all of the oil and filters.
“This is a fool-proof method that has never
resulted in bearing failure caused by bad oil,”
said Gilroy. “We have witnessed excellent
engine lives in excess of 1.7 million km
(approximately 1.05 million miles) without
ever working on the bearings!”
Change on the Horizon
Maintaining Cam-Scott’s fleet of equipment has not
always been easy. When oil analysis tests from other
brands came back with poor results and engines were
breaking down, Cam-Scott knew they had to make
some serious changes within their existing programs.
The company was losing significant amounts of money
and productivity levels were suffering. At that time,
two of the most crucial decision-making factors for
Cam-Scott included maintenance simplicity and
company costs. RP Oil Ltd. helped to solve those
problems and Cam-Scott made the decision to switch
to the Kendall® Motor Oil brand.
In switching to Kendall Motor Oil’s dependable products, the company witnessed a noticeable change in overhead,
approximately $150,000-$200,000 annually, and the trucks produced a substantially longer life expectancy. Kendall Motor
Oil products have had a strong and lasting impact on Cam-Scott Transport Ltd.’s success in the past 16 years.
“Kendall Motor Oil has been great to us, and we have never had an engine fail as a result of bad oil in my seven years
with Cam-Scott,” said Gilroy. “You don’t see breakdowns with Kendall.”
Gilroy currently maintains Cam-Scott’s fleet using Kendall Super-D® 3 Diesel Engine Oil 15w40, Kendall SHP® Full
Synthetic Gear Lubricant and Kendall L-427 Super Blu-Grease®, which he obtains from RPOL Oil.
Looking into the Future
As part of his maintenance program, Gilroy goes through approximately 4,500 gallons of oil each year. Based on
this quantity, it is important that oil only be changed when necessary. For this reason, Cam-Scott participates in
ConocoPhillips’ Kendall Lubrication Analysis System (KLAS) for the entire fleet. This program was designed to assist
Fleet/Equipment Managers in reducing costs by making more informed and accurate maintenance decisions. It directly
translates to Cam-Scott by allowing Gilroy to monitor component wear and contamination levels, while helping to detect
engine problems in the early stages. He is then able to repair minor problems before they become costly, save money
for his company and provide a reliable fleet to Cam-Scott’s customer.
Today, all engines routinely go through the KLAS oil analysis program and the company is committed to using
ConocoPhillips products. As a loyal Kendall Motor Oil customer for 16 years, Gilroy is confident that he will continue to
use these products and services to maintain his fleet for many years to come.
