The Gymnastics Club Shines

ymnastics is a very popular sport in Romania,
especially for young girls. The girls from the
Living Hope Center in Targu Jiu, Romania
love gymnastics, but many of them couldn’t afford to
join a club or pay for lessons. Realizing how much the
girls could learn about hope, teamwork, and perseverance, the Living Hope Center started their own gymnastics club. Over the last few years, they have been
practicing and showing their skills to their friends and
family at LHC events, but they recently had an opportunity to share their love of gymnastics with a much
bigger group of people.
A national contest was being held
in Petrosani, about 37 miles
from Targu Jiu. This was
a huge event with over
50 teams from all
over Romania participating. To their
surprise, the Living
Hope Center team
was invited to share their talent at a demonstration show
at the end of the contest. Can you imagine how excited
the twelve girls on the LHC gymnastics team were to
participate in an event like this? Nicoleta, who comes
from a family of twelve children and has never been out
of Targu Jiu, was thrilled to be part of such an “important team.” She said it was like an unbelievable dream.
Almost 500 people attended the gymnastics contest,
and the stage was bigger than anything the girls had
ever seen. Even though the girls were nervous, they
smiled and gave a great performance. Hurrah!
They received a diploma and a trophy, which was
presented by a leader of the show. He said, “Many things
come and go away in life, but there is one thing that
will always live and should never forsake us - and that is
hope. Today we have here the Ambassadors of a
Living Hope!!!”

verybody has a favorite sport. Here
are a few of the sports enjoyed by
Romanians.
Soccer
Soccer, which is called football in Romania, is the most popular Romanian
sport. Not only do people enjoy playing the game, everyone takes time off

to watch important games, especially if
the Romanian national team is playing
in the World Cup. Whether you are a
child or adult, soccer is THE game to
play in Romania.
Gymnastics
Romanian gymnasts have competed for
years in international competitions and
the Olympics. Romania has won a total
of 66 Olympic medals, many of them
gold, since 1924. This is very impressive!

most famous athletes in the United
States. Some of them have won competitions, championships, and maybe even
the Olympics. Let’s learn about a few of
the best Romanian athletes.
Nadia Comăneci
When she was only 14 years old, Nadia
scored the first perfect “10” in the history
of gymnastics on the uneven bars in the
1976 Olympics. During her entire gymnastic career, Nadia won nine Olympic
medals, and five of them were gold. She
was a truly amazing athlete!
Steaua Bucureşti
Not only is Steaua Bucureşti the most
popular soccer (football) team in Romania, it is also the most successful. They
have won 23 national championships
and the 1986 European Cup final.
Gheorghe Mureşan
Gheorghe Mureşan was the first Romanian basketball player to enter the
United States NBA. At 7 feet 7 inches
tall, he is also tied as the tallest basketball player in history! t
