The
of Plaza Merdeka
T
he glistening,
four-storey Plaza
Merdeka (excluding
the ground and
lower ground floors)
has given a breath of fresh air to
Kuching’s rather sleepy city centre
since it opened its doors in 2012.
Inside, young couples are seen
shopping as they pop in and out of
retail outlets while families enjoy an
eventful day out, munching on juicy,
tantalising burgers at Sarawak’s first
Burger King outlet. Then there are
also those who have made themselves
comfortable at Starbucks, enjoying
aromatic coffee as they soak up the
views of the adjacent Padang Merdeka.
What used to be a city centre starved
of entertainment and retail options
has now changed immensely thanks
to the presence of Plaza Merdeka
which has added life, vibrancy,
excitement, and revitalised Kuching’s
historic city district.
Nevertheless, running a successful
shopping mall which delivers
effectively to customers comes with
its own set of challenges.
“Every location (of a shopping
mall) will have its advantages and
disadvantages
and there is
no perfect
location,” said
Plaza Merdeka
Holdings
Managing
Director Dato’
Steve Ng.
According to him, what’s most
important in delivering a successful
shopping mall is the management.
“Management is the very key. The
shopping mall needs to be visible
and you have to understand that it
will also take time to mature.”
One of the first factors Ng said the
Plaza Merdeka management team
took into account was to understand
the local demographic of Kuching’s
city centre.
“Plaza Merdeka is located next to India
Street which used to be patronised by
a good mix of locals. But over the last
decade, it has evolved to be more of a
Bumiputera market.
“The shopping mall has actually
changed that (since opening its
doors) and we need to continue
working towards making sure that is
the case,” he explained.
Another factor, he noted, was
sufficient data and information such
as diversity of customers, which would
4

ensure that the management is able to
make the best possible decisions.
“We do get a lot more
tourists at the mall and
that’s why we have set up
a concierge here which
operates almost full time
to cater to tourists asking
for directions. Being in an
area with all the historic
sights around, this is one
of the plus points of Plaza
Merdeka.”
In addition to understanding the
demographic, Ng remarked that it was
also crucial to understand retail trends
that were specific to local trends.
“This is one of the things about
shopping centres that a lot of people
don’t really understand. They think
that once you open it and lease out
the outlets, you’re done. But that’s
from the old days.
“Today, you need to constantly
monitor and work on your advertising
and promotion (A&P), which is very
important. You also need a team to
execute as well as a revenue centre;
one that generates activities and
buzz,” he stressed. At this juncture,
he noted that credit for the present
look and success must go to the
management team headed by Mr
Cheah Kheng Mun, the General
Manager of Plaza Merdeka. Mr Cheah
brought with him expertise and

more than 20 years of experiences in
shopping malls management, retail
and strategic marketing.
Having established a name for itself
over the past three years, Ng said
Plaza Merdeka is currently evolving to
cater more to the mass market.
“When we first opened the mall it
had an 88% occupancy which then
went up to 95% and then 96% and
we’re still very happy we were able
to do that. Since then, we have had
certain concepts such as moving our
food court all the way up to Level 3
of the mall.”
He commented that normally, people
would expect to see a food court at
the basement of a mall. However, Plaza
Merdeka became the first to move its
food court “all the way to the top”.
“What we did was we parked it right
in the middle of the mall rather than
to the side so that the connectivity,
visibility and positioning of the food
court can be seen.”
“At the same and higher levels, we
have also had recent additions such as
Molly Fantasy and Mr. DIY which have
changed the dynamics of the whole
sector. In fact, if you go in now, there’s
always a lot of people there and with
that, combined with the food court,
we are pleased to say that the mall’s
Level 3 and Level 4 are actually very
well-anchored.” Another effort carried

out by the mall’s management team,
said Ng, was to relocate and position
outlets to introduce a transformation
of sorts while keeping things fresh and
interesting to remain relevant.
One of the upcoming additions is
Swedish high street fashion label H&M
(the second outlet in Kuching), which
will soon open its doors to the public
here. “With H&M coming in, we
had to relocate some of our tenants,
which was very difficult but it had to
be done. This is all part of the cost of
doing business and in some cases if the
tenant is significant, it is worthwhile to
actually do that,” he acknowledged.
“We are nearing the end of our first
cycle and our management has done
a good job of reorganising the mall,
bringing in different tenants and
international and national brands.
In a good management team, most
times you will position your tenants
appropriately.”
He also commended tHe Spring
Shopping Mall’s management
team for doing a great job in their
relocation exercise.
“tHe Spring has done a very good
job and we always look to them as
sort of a guide and benchmark for
our mall. It’s very good that you have
people like that in the marketplace.”
Plaza Merdeka will also soon see a new
addition to the mall with the adjoining
The Waterfront Hotel due to open in
October this year.
“What we have done is we have
reconfigured the hotel, to be
equivalent or better than a five-star
hotel in Kuching. That’s the market
we’re penetrating.”
Among the facilities available at the
208-room boutique hotel are executive
floor and lounge, infinity pool with
panoramic views of the city, gym,
function rooms, six meeting rooms of
various sizes and a restaurant which
will feature an extensive menu of
Continental cuisine as well as Asian
and local specialty dishes.
“Price-wise it will be competitive and
if you look at the group’s philosophy,
we’ve always focused on value
concept which is the way to go. We
believe that we can deliver a quality
product at a much more competitive
price,” Ng shared.

Kuching’s
charming
Chinatown
K
uching’s
Chinatown is a
charming little
stretch in the
heart of Cat City.
Old shophouses with traditional
wooden shutters dot much of its
entire expanse, with a substantial
amount restoration works as well
as refurbishments carried out to
spruce up the place as part of the
revitalisation process of Kuching’s
historic district, complementing the
city’s other attractions such as the
Main Bazaar, Kuching Waterfront
and India Street for instance.
Part of the city’s Heritage
Trail and hugely popular
with both local visitors
and foreign tourists alike,
the stretch consists
two of Kuching’s oldest
streets - Carpenter Street
and Ewe Hai Street,
whose histories date
back to the early 1800s.
Life Café, Lau Ya Keng food court
and Min Heng Coffee Shop.
Furniture shops, souvenir parlours,
convenience stores and goldsmiths
receive their fair share of daily
customers as well.
For tourists who aren’t too keen on
staying in expensive grand hotels,
more affordable yet comfortable
accommodation options are
available as well.
The stretch starts from Jalan Tun
Abang Haji Openg, where the old
General Post Office is, and ends
at Ewe Hai Street behind the Main
Bazaar. It is as lively today as it was
back in the days, although flashy bars
and cafes now replace some of the
old shops from before, making the
area perfect for tourists to chill out at,
especially during night-time when the
glitzier establishments come alive.
During the day, the area is abuzz
with activity. Hungry diners throng
its many iconic eateries such as
There is also fun to be had, with
exciting new attractions such as
Surrey Bike Kuching, which allows
you to discover old Kuching from a
rather unique perspective. Tourists
can also get hands-on experience
in preparing traditional cuisines at
Bumbu Cooking Class.
Restored to their former glory, the
Hiang Thian Siang Ti temple and Hong
San Si temple on Carpenter Street
and Ewe Hai Street are major tourist
magnets as well. With ornate carvings
adorning their walls and roof, these
two temples are a sight to behold.
A perfect blend of the old and new,
Carpenter Street and Ewe Hai Street
look set to continue to be among
Kuching’s major tourist attractions
for many more years to come.

India Street is that we’ll be bringing
in more activities so that you will
have more people coming in.”
Among the new introductions here
are nightly kiosks where enterprising
entrepreneurs can sell local products
such as Sarawak Kek Lapis and ‘ikan
terubok’ among others.
Transformation
on the go
I
ndia Street is well-known
among locals for its lanes
that house many shops
and eateries which have
served many generations
of Kuching’s multi-racial population.
Today, the historic street remains
as one of Kuching’s hearts of civic
activity as both locals and tourists
frequent the street, now known as
India Street Pedestrian Mall, for a
good bargain on local products.
However, as years passed, the
customer landscape has also evolved
with the changing times and this
did not go unnoticed with the India
Street Pedestrian Mall Committee
who has recently taken the initiative
to upgrade the pedestrian mall.
The project, which was the foresight
of the Governor of Sarawak, His
Excellency Tun Pehin Sri Haji Abdul
Taib bin Mahmud, costs around
RM4.3 million and is fully funded by
the State Government. It will feature
a polycarbonate and aluminium
louvre roofing boasting contemporary
designs that will also complement
India Street’s
historic value.
Its Chairman
Dato’ Wee
Hong Seng said
the committee
recognised
India Street as
a heritage site but at the same time,
it must also evolve to ensure that it
breathes life back into the street.
“The way we look at it is that we are
introducing these to complement the
current traders that have long been
trading at India Street,” he said.
In addition to this, Wee said India
Street’s adjacent Khai Joo Lane
would also be very “happening”
on Friday and Saturday nights as it
transformed into a ‘food street’.
“Prior to this, there used to be little
to no activity from 7pm onwards.
But after a discussion with the
traders and shop owners here, they
have agreed to operate a food street
where visitors can come and enjoy
the best of Sarawakian delicacies
from 6pm to 10pm starting from
October onwards.”
“India Street has a history of more
than a century and from time to
time, you must go through these
changes and transformations.
Otherwise, you’ll be left behind.
“These are among the things in our
line-up and what we are looking
into is the plan for the next three
to five years,” he said, adding that
India Street Pedestrian Mall will also
be equipped with safety features
such as 24-hour security and fire
extinguishers.
“There are more than 70 shophouses
here but if there’s no activity going
on, India Street will turn into a ghost
town. So we must make sure that it
continues to have soul, to have life
and interaction,” he emphasised.
With Plaza Merdeka situated just
next to India Street, Wee expressed
his confidence that the surrounding
areas will one day transform into a
‘zoned shopping mall’ and leisure
area of Kuching.
With the completion of the project,
Wee noted that the originality of
the old buildings along India Street
would shine through.
“I think if the traders and
management committee all work
together, we can achieve this and
create a place where family can
come and spend a weekend here.
“Every place has its own character
and you should sell its existing
character without changing the
actual heritage value of the place.
“The heritage of the old buildings
will still be there but what’s new for
“Community engagement is a very
good move and when everyone
participates, there will be a sense of
belonging and responsibility. We want
everybody to play their role to build
this place together,” Wee remarked.

alarming rate.
Ever aware of the
growing health threat,
many have resorted to
eliminating sugar in their food
and drinks altogether, and reducing
their carb intake.
With GlucosCare® Tea, your
sugar and carbs can be reduced
or controlled to a certain extend.
Developed by GlucosCare

GlucosCare® Tea is scientifically

A sugar-blocking health tea for
diabetics, GlucosCare® Tea consists
two components. The first is
Gymnema Sylvestre, which translates
to ‘sugar destroyer’ in Sanskrit. It
has been used for centuries in South
Asia to help control sugar levels in
the blood.
The second component is Camellia
Sinensis, or more commonly known
as green tea, which is added to the
GlucosCare® Tea as an antioxidant
agent, and is critical to protect our
tissue cells and maintain optimal
health. GlucosCare® Tea works by
reducing the absorption of sugar in
the small intestine, thus helping to
maintain the levels of sugar in our body.
The tea is perfect for those who are
watching their weight as lower levels
of sugar in the bloodstream results in
weight loss.
GlucosCare’s Assistant Marketing
Manager, Kelly Leong disclosed that
the tea could also help restore the
function of the pancreas, helping it
to secrete more insulin to make sure
that more glucose could be used
up as energy and not linger in the
bloodstream.
Certified halal, GlucosCare® Tea is
produced under safe and hygienic
condition by national qualified GMP
plant in Johor Bahru, and is distributed
to over 20 countries worldwide,
including Hong Kong, New Zealand,
Kuwait, Serbia and Poland.
Pregnant or lactating women and

Care
for
your
eyes
“F
or most people, wearing
glasses is often a
necessity due to poor
vision arising from age, diseases or
accidents. Some of course, wear
these glasses or contact lenses for
style or fashion, especially sunglasses!
Regardless, we must take care of our
eyes, especially from a young age and
to take precautions from daily exposure
of UV rays and electronic gadgets
like TVs, handphones, computers
which are strenuous to the eyes,”
said Optometrist Norliana Bujang.
According to her, it is advisable to have
our eyes checked annually to ensure
that they are in healthy condition or to
get the right prescriptions if wearing
glasses already.
blindness. Another way to safeguard
our eyes is to remember the 20-2020 rule therapy: for every 20 minutes
spent in front of digital gadgets, try to
look away about 20 feet in front for 20
seconds. These will give the eyes rest
and avoid fatigue that are not good
for our eyes,” she explained. As more
young children are now exposed to
digital devices from a young age, the
optometrist opined that they should
ideally be taken for yearly eye check-up
as they will be unable to clearly see the
whiteboards in classes or sprain their
eyes without corrective glasses if they
have such vision problems.
“Naturally most people over 40 years
old will experience presbyopia or
commonly known as old-age sight
which is unavoidable. To correct the
problem, a simple eye test will provide
the necessary prescription glasses or
contact lenses to enable the person
to correct his or her
vision. In some
cases, people

headaches,
blurred or
double vision,
squinting is a
result of eye
focus problem,
which
only need glasses to cure. Certainly,
a qualified optometrist is the person
to turn to for help!” she laughingly
stated. When one’s work requires
exposure to the sun on a daily basis,
sunglasses are a necessity to block out
harmful UV rays and these are special
lenses, which should be sourced from
licenced optometry vendors. Ronnie
Optical outlets have a wide range of
sunglass brands to choose from and
customers are assured of quality and
original lenses.
For those preferring contact lenses,
Norliana advises them to observe
hygiene rules like washing hands
before inserting or removing lenses to
avoid contamination, which can lead
to painful infections or even blindness.

B

Gas Town, is
well known for
its industrial
prowess and rapid
growth. But it also boasts the ‘First
of its kind’ botanical and zoological
garden in the state, fondly referred
to here as Taman Tumbina Bintulu.
Located over 75 hectares of hilly,
undulating terrain just 5 kilometres
from the town’s centre, it is a
wonderland for nature lovers young
and old alike! Tiger, flamingo, bear,
porcupine and assortment of other
animals as well as vast range of local
plant species and even some exotic
ones are found in this park, which
makes it naturally ideal for recreation,
tourism attraction, educational,
conservation as well as research and
development. In fact, the place is a
well-known venue to study hornbill
species found in the state.
Taman Tumbina Bintulu is open daily
from 9am to 4pm and adult fee is
just RM2 while children aged 7 and
in school uniform only pay RM0.50.
Since its opening in 1991, the park
has been one of the favourite venues
for locals to come and see the
evening sun set on the horizon as the
hill here gives an impressive picture of
the setting. Additionally, you will also
get an equally impressive view of the
ocean as the park is just next to the
seaside! It goes without doubt that
visitors always come here for picture
taking and for the memorable allure
of plants, sand, and animals.
In time to come, the park will
introduce visitors to its Butterfly
World, which is in the process of
being set up together with the
Gallery and R&D centre. This is the
place to enjoy oneself with family
and friends amidst the fauna and
flora, which are unique in their own
ways, away from the town and its
bustling traffic and people. With
such a great collection of nature’s
beauties, Taman Tumbina Bintulu
promises every visitor a rewarding
and memorable experience!

Sarawak also wanted to show Kuala

The Sukma 2016 will also see most
of the 24 sports centred in the

its popular sport of volleyball and
badminton. Miri will be the venue
for sailing and karatedo.
In 1990 who can dispel from our
minds when swim queen Tania Bugo
showed off her 13 gold haul which
left an indelible mark in our memory.
Tania - a precocious talent unveiled
by Sarawak during the Games won
a gold and two bronzes in the Asian
Age Group swimming meet in
Bombay when she was just 10 years
old. In athletics, there was Linda
Chin - a middle and long distance
sensation whose only defeat was
in the 800m where she lost to the
late Rabia Abdul Salam from the
Peninsular. In javelin, Sarawak had
an Orang Ulu thrower Kebing Apui
from Belaga who impressed then
visiting German coach Hans Peter
Thum with his sheer natural talent.
In silat, Sarawak made history when
two former Taekwondo exponents
Hii King Hung and Shirley Wong won
gold in their respective categories in
the ethnic Malay sports. In badminton
there was James Chua who later
became a Malaysian Open champion.
Such were the myriad of talents that
Sarawak Sukma 1990 produced.
Sarawak not only dominated in
their traditional strong sports like in
athletics, swimming, women hockey
and volleyball but also surprised their
own fans with gold in football - a
sport where the best achievement
after 1990 was making it to the
semifinals in 1996 in Selangor
Sukma. There were also several golds
in tennis where the Liew sisters of
Liew Meang and Liew Sheau Shan as
well as Gwendaline Chua stumped
the nation with their prowess.
However, Sarawak, famous for
producing a string of sprinters down
the years, did not have one in the
Games held at our own backyard. It
was not until the 1996 Sukma held
in Pahang where Watson Nyambek
the “Flying Dayak” stormed into
Malaysian history after a “duel of
the decade” or is it century with rival
Azmi Mahmud of Pahang. Watson
settled the score with a yard to spare
to beat the national sprint record
of 10.3 secs (handtimed) set by Dr.
M Jegathesan with an impressive
10.33 secs in the 100m in 1966.

as Sarawak may even take the

Fast forward to 2016, 25 years later,
Sukma, which was once given a new
lease of life by Sarawak, is returning
to its rightful origin of “birth”.
Sarawak has promised to serve up in
hardly a year’s time. The Land of the
Hornbills won a hattrick of titles in
Sukma 1990, Sukma 1992 in Johor
and Sukma 1994 but lost footing a
little after that. Selangor took over
winning the next seven Sukmas in
1996 Pahang, played host in 1998,
Penang 2000, Sabah 2002, Negeri
Sembilan 2004 and Kedah 2006.
After that, Terengganu took over as
the leader in Malaysian sports by first
winning the Sukma 2008 held in its
territory followed by Melaka 2010
and Pahang 2012.
Kuala Lumpur surprised the
Malaysian Sukma fraternity, winning
the most gold (55), 38 silver, 50
bronze to run away with the overall
title as they swept all the medals in
rhythmic gymnastics.
Sarawak, who was pipped to the
title in 1996 Sukma by Selangor
with a single gold, played second
fiddle to Selangor for the next two
Sukmas in 1998 and 2002 and in
2004. In 2002 Sukma held in Sabah,
they were third behind Selangor and
Sabah. They were fourth placing in
Kedah Sukma 2006, then improved
slightly to third in Terengganu 2008.
But their worst showing was in
Melaka Sukma held in 2010 where
they managed only 33 gold, 49
silver and 47 bronze, and were
placed sixth - their worst showing
in the national games. During those
Games, athletics won only one gold
for the State.
The last two sukmas held in Pahang
in 2012 and Perlis two years ago saw
Sarawak making a steady climb back
into the reckoning as it was placed
fourth in Pahang with 42 gold 32
silver and 38 bronze and climbed
back to third position in Perlis. They
predicted a target of 55 gold before
the game up North and managed 47
gold - just eight golds short.
Sarawak officials are confident in
the coming Sukma of retaining
the supremacy in the Games, for
as the host State they have several
advantages. For one way of retaining
their titles as host, they have the
advantage of choosing optional
sports this time. They have left out
the multiple sports of kayak where
Terengganu used to rule the roost and
in which Sarawak had not won a single
gold or silver in the past two Games.
It will again rely in athletics with 42
gold at stake, swimming, diving,
wushu, tenpin bowling, Taekwondo,
tennis, pentanque. It even predicted
a grand haul of 72 gold, which could
help it retain the overall title.
The State also aims to make a
comeback in archery where it has
engaged the coach of 1990 success
Abdul Razak Yacob, cycling such as
BMX, road race and mountain bike,
shooting where it has engaged a
Russian coach. Even in badminton,
Sarawak officials are keeping mum
of their chances to land a medal or
even gold, as they will bank on their
twin hopefuls of Adam and Alfred in
the singles and doubles.
But it is in athletics and swimming
that Sarawak is expected to present
its powerhouse in the two sports,
as they may get as many as 10 gold
or even more although the athletics
officials prefer to give a conservative
count. Among the stars likely to
shine in the pool and take over from
the mantle of former Sukma hero
Henry Daniel Bego is SEA Games
gold medallist Welson Sim. Other
rising stars ready to make a splash
include Vernon Lee and Angela
Chieng to name just a few.
The conservative count is based on
Sarawak’s prowess in the field events
as in the throws. In hammerthrow,
Sarawak expects to sweep not only
gold but threatens to take the leaner
pickings of the silvers and bronzes
as well.
Grace Wong Xiu Mei, already a
bronze medallist in the SEA Games
held in Singapore in June 2015 is
expected to win the hammerthrow
event hands down. Grace, who is of
mixed parentage – (mother is from
Papa New Guinea and father a local
Chinese) had thrown further than the
Laos SEA Games winner during the
last Sukma held in Perlis. She will no
doubt be the star of the track-andfield meet in this coming Sukma.
However, the track and field events
with 42 gold at stake will be the
main focus for Sarawak’s where
it’s officials are quietly confident of
winning more than 10 gold. Beside
athletics, the bulk of gold medals is
predicted to come from swimming,
wushu, diving, weightlifting, tennis,
tenpin bowling and Taekwondo.
Also in the running are gymnastics
artistic, silat, archery, shooting,
pentanque, lawnbowl and cycling.
Even in women’s hockey there is
a ray of hope as hockey officials
are trying their best to prepare a
decent team for the showdown even
though they had not been successful
in their last three Sukma attempts.
Megalanes Batu Kawa
The State will be competing in 24
sports including swimming, diving,
athletics, football, hockey (men
and women), volleyball (men and
women), sepak takraw, weightlifting,
shooting, archery, cycling
(mountainbike, BMX and road
race), tennis, gymnastics- artistic
and rhythmic, squash, badminton,
sailing, wushu, silat, boxing,
taekwondo, pentanque, tenpin
bowling, lawnbowl and golf.
Come July 2016, the whole State
and Malaysia will be watching for
another spectacular sporting event
at the Sarawak Stadium.

RM300 million investment on related
facilities in the area, including a
refinery with capacity of 1,200
metric tonnes per day, downstream
oleo chemical industry as well as
other integrated oil based industries.
All these will further strengthen the
POIC and will in turn add value to
the whole of Tanjung Manis and
surrounding areas.
“As a sign of the support from the
government, a grant of RM135 million
had been approved under the 10th
Malaysia Plan for the development of
the facilities in Tanjung Manis,” he
said, adding that the grant would
have a positive impact on STIDC’s
Tg Manis Integrated Port subsidiary
Pusaka Capital.
“In particular, the Tanjung Manis port
will see increase in activities when all
these facilities come on line. This is
in line with the Government’s aim of
making Tanjung Manis the main port
for the central region in Sarawak,”
he added. The Minister also stated
that the storage facility would be
expanded to cater to increasing raw
palm oil imported from neighbouring
countries, which will enhance both
the refining industry as well as export
trade in the centre.
To ensure that Tanjung Manis
continues to experience rapid growth
and development, the Government
Kuala Rajang
Bintangor
Sarikei
also conducted a review of the
strategic plans for the area and
duly submitted these under the 11th
Malaysia Plan initiatives. The relook
was necessary following the changes
in the development of the area, from
a mere timber processing zone to
industrial estate and township as well
a port. These new plans will transform
Tanjung Manis into the most
important centre of economic growth
in the central zone,” he stated.
In order for these plans to work, STIDC
has also put in place strategies to
complement the necessary changes.
Among the most obvious is the
setting up of the Tanjung Manis
Administration centre, which is to
oversee the whole project development
in Tanjung Manis. As such, housing
projects are being implemented to
cater to the increasing population
and expectations of residents while
Info
industrial projects like shipbuilding,
furniture and others are designated
special areas suited to their needs in
clusters to facilitate ease of services
and also development. Road links have
also been upgraded to cater to these
special areas, which will bring about
greater development and ease of
transportation.
“One main issue facing Tanjung Manis
previously was that of water supply.
Water had to be brought in for the
industries as well as residential areas
and this has now been resolved with
the construction of pipelines from
Sibu, which will ensure constant
and regular water supply to Tanjung
Manis. These pipe’ networks are
expected to be completed by 2016
which by then will see also the rapid
development of industries that require
vast amounts of water as well as
residential areas,” he stressed. “Also
upgraded will be the power supply,
which will see the electricity lines
being connected from Mukah towards
Tanjung Manis. When completed, the
power supply will sufficiently meet
the needs of the area,” he informed.
Telecommunications lines are also
being improved and upgraded to
cater to the growing expectations of
the area.
Tanjung Manis has also seen rapid
development of residential estates of
different specifications, catering to
the workers, service providers, officers
and executives. Majority of these
were initially set up with cooperation
and joint ventures with STIDC but a
number of private sector developers
have shown interest in the building
of homes and factories following
the greater pace of development at
Tanjung Manis over the past years.
The planned township as envisaged
by STIDC is also a contributory factor
for people to call Tanjung Manis
home as the residential areas are sited
close to nature with beautiful scenery
and tranquillity.
“It must be remembered that the
development of Tanjung Manis is
not only for the private sector but
public sector to be the main players;
STIDC has envisioned that the vast
hinterland surrounding Tanjung
Manis will also prosper equally,” the
General Manager of STIDC, Datu
Sarudu Hoklai pointed out. The
native residents around the area will
be the main suppliers for food and
labour, which will have immediate
impacts on their lives. With air
transportation available, people can
make day trips to and from the area,
which will enable other activities
related to tourism and eco-adventure
to also prosper in time to come.
“There are still much pristine areas
near to Tanjung Manis which can
be explored for tourism potential,”
the General Manager explained.
Naturally the native people living
around these areas will be the
ones who will act as tourist guides
to visitors keen to see these
natural habitats as well as coastal
areas known to be frequented by
migratory birds, sea mammals and
others, he added. According to him,
STIDC is highly optimistic that the
people of the surrounding areas will
gain most from the development of
Tanjung Manis as standard of living
will increase and more services will
be available to everyone.

Young orangutan using a leaf

Saving
the Great Ape
of Asia
T
he orangutans are
Asian species of
the Great Apes
known for their
intelligence, long
arms and reddish brown hair. Native
to Indonesia and Malaysia, they are
currently found in the wild only in the
rainforests on the islands of Borneo
and Sumatra. The name ‘orangutan’
is derived from the Malay word for
‘person of the forest’. There are two
species of orangutans - the Bornean
orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) which
is found on the island of Borneo and
the Sumatran orangutan (Pongo
abelii) which is found on the island
of Sumatra.
The orangutan is one of four ‘Great
Ape’ species which also includes
gorilla, chimpanzee and bonobo. It
is unique in that it is the only ape
occurring in Asia; the others being
of African origin. This large, red
ape is one of human being’s closest
relatives, sharing 97% of our DNA.
They are almost exclusively arboreal,
which means they spend most of
their lives high in the tree tops. In
fact, orangutans are the largest
arboreal animal in the world. A male
orangutan can weigh from 50 to
90 kilogrammes whilst the female
is smaller, weighing in at 30 to 50
kilogrammes. Orangutans may live
up to 45 years or more but they
can only have one offspring at a
time. They are the most solitary of
all the Great Apes with social bonds
occurring primarily between mothers
and their dependent offsprings who
stay together, the longest up to 8
years. Adult male and adolescents of
both sexes tend to live alone. They

are largely fruit eaters and sleep in
nests in the trees which they make
from leaves and branches and hardly
come down to the ground; this
makes them different from other
Great Apes.
Orangutans are the most critically
endangered of the Great Apes due to
habitat loss and poaching. Every year,
orangutan habitats are lost through
the clearing of tropical rainforests
for timber, agriculture and other
development purposes. In addition,
illegal hunting and illegal animal trade
also contribute to the decline of wild
orangutan populations. Today, it is
estimated that only 2,000 to 2,500
individual orangutans remain in the

Numbers and iconic significance
aside, why should we care? The
importance of orangutans within
the rainforest ecosystem should
not be underestimated. Like
some other animals in the forests,
orangutans are considered to be of
the ‘Umbrella Species’, which means
that they are important to the health
of the forest and other living things
that they co-exist with. Orangutans
consume large amounts of fruit
and many of these fruits depend on
the orangutans for dispersal, which
is why they are sometimes called
‘gardeners of the forest’. Orangutans
are also culturally important to the
Dayaks of Sarawak; their legends
have it that people are descended
from the orangutan.

Stunning
ttention all bike
lovers – now you
can get genuine
accessories complete
with branded
apparels for your bikes and you at the
same time share a common bond with
other bike lovers in Miri at Stunning
Bike! This Stunning Bike outlet is
the first in Sarawak, operating since
February this year while the HQ is in
Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
Bike
Genuine parts
for bikes and
friendships for free,
now in Miri, Sarawak
“While the majority of people
visiting Stunning Bike are seasoned
bike owners, we also welcome new
bike owners to join in the activities
and learn from the pros as well as
experience convoy riding as part of the
activities for the outlet.” According to
him, these experienced bikers like to
share their knowledge and safety tips
with all new bikers, including women
who are the newbies in the industry.
“We are very pleased and happy to
have made lots of new bike friends
since our opening as this comradeship
is one of the main objectives of
Stunning Bike’s vision in setting up
the branch in Miri,” said Karl Wan,
Manager for Stunning Bike. “Sharing
our love for bikes of all types and
ranges, we organise trips, picnics and
other social activities to bring this joy
to people from all walks of life and you
also need not necessarily own a bike
to share in the company of friends.
We also don’t want people to form
negative opinions of bikers who are
rowdy or undisciplined as these are not
our style; we are promoting healthy
living lifestyle and enjoying it with our
bikes and friends,” he added.
Apart from the fun activities,
Stunning Bike’s new outlet is also the
place to get genuine parts for bikes
as the shop carries many accessories
and parts of various brand names
normally sought after by bikers
who want to customise their bikes.
Among the well-known names
available are Speed and Strength,
Chrome Industries, HJC, Tech Spec,
Racefit, Mivv, and Keiti. Also in
stock are premier helmets for your
selection.
“Safety is the most important issue
for many bikers, and hence using
genuine parts is a guarantee that
these will meet the specifications
for the particular bikes,” said Karl.
“It is definitely cheaper to buy other
compatible parts for your bikes made
in other countries but the question
to be asked is that of safety and
quality assurance. If these parts
failed when on a remote stretch of
the road, it would be troublesome
for a biker to get assistance. Safety
concerns play a part too. Therefore,
my advice to bike owners is to always
get genuine parts for their bikes from
the manufacturers or their agents as
they will give you peace of mind!”
he assured. So if biking and getting
to know new friends is your agenda,
make your way to Stunning Bike and
see for yourself!

Coup de Grill
R
elish in a
delightful choice
of international
dishes in one of
Bintulu’s muchloved gastronomic
destinations, Coup de Grill. Located
in bustling Bintulu Sentral, the
eatery is a hot spot for diners who
absolutely adore French, Greek,
Italian and Mediterranean cuisines,
as well as newly added American
dishes. Vegetarians also love the
selection of dishes specially created
with them in mind.
The restaurant boasts a cosy
ambience, with earthy hues
dominating its interior, from the
walls to the tables and chairs. It’s a
great place for families, couples and
buddies to come and enjoy great
food at affordable prices.
First-time diners ought to
start off with their signature
dishes. Their Braised Lamb
Shank is highly recommended.
Slow-braised for three hours
in a homemade lamb sauce,
the meat is “off-the-bone”
tender and is just bursting
with flavour!
Avid fans of beef
will love their Sirloin
Steak. Imported straight
from New Zealand, a
juicy slab of chilled PS
aged beef striploin is
grilled to perfection,
according to your liking.
The restaurant recommends medium
rare or medium doneness for the
best texture and a steak that is
immensely tender and juicy.
If you prefer chicken, their CDG
Chicken Cordon Bleu will definitely
tickle your fancy. Unlike the usual
deep-fried chicken cordon bleu,
Coup de Grill’s version features
smoked turkey ham wrapped in
boneless chicken leg and roasted
until the skin turns crisp and golden
brown in colour. A special cream
sauce completes the dish.
Coup de Grill is particularly proud
of its pizza selection. Highly
recommended is the Seafood
Supreme Pizza,
which includes
scallops, mussels,
prawns and squid
freshly baked on a thin crust
handmade pizza with a delicious
pesto sauce. Simply the best!
As for pasta lovers, the Chicken and
Shrimp Diablo is a must-try. It’s a
decadent combo of delicious panseared chicken and plump prawns atop
creamy pink sauce smothered linguine.
For good food with a great
ambience to match, head on

prides itself in serving some of the best
halal food Cat City has to offer.
Besides their must-trys like Bandung
Goreng and Nasi Aruk Dang Esah,
diners will love their Biryani W.O.L.
Just mildly spicy and beautifully
balanced in flavour, it is perfect
for diners who love biryani but
can’t handle spiciness. The rice is
complemented with a delicious
vegetable curry and curried meat
of the day (chicken, lamb or beef).
Highly recommended, their chicken
curry is succulent and cooked
perfectly, and is what sets their
biryani dish apart from the rest.
After a hearty meal of biryani, have
a slice of their Labu Sri Kaya Bonda,
the owner’s family’s traditional recipe.
A whole pumpkin is deseeded, filled
with homemade Sri Kaya and steamed
until the flesh becomes tender. Served
chilled, the Labu Sri Kaya Bonda is a
perfect end to any meal.
Complement all that with a glass
of their refreshing ice-blended

Health
Kidney
failure and
adequate dialysis
I
n Malaysia, the number
of patients suffering
from end-stage kidney
failure has increased
at an alarming rate
of approximately 6,000 new
patients per year. At the same
time, approximately 3,500 dialysis
patients died per year mostly due
to cardiovascular diseases and
infection. As of December 31st,
2013, the total number of kidney
failure patients receiving dialysis
was 32,000 in Malaysia. This is
currently approximately 2,000
end-stage kidney failure patients
receiving dialysis treatment in
Sarawak alone. Patients with end
stage kidney failure depend on
kidney replacement therapies such as
haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis
to sustain their life.
Dialysis treatment is usually carried
in a hospital dialysis unit or some
independent out-of-the-hospital
outpatient dialysis unit. A typical
dialysis patient receives 12 hours
of dialysis treatment per week. The
number of hours spent in the dialysis
unit is approximately 11% of the
patient’s waking hour in a week.
To ensure that all dialysis patients
receive adequate dialysis treatment,
we routinely monitor a dialysis
parameter called “Kt/V” which
represents dialysis adequacy for
our dialysis patients. International
guidelines in dialysis agrees that a
Kt/V of equal to or greater than 1.2 is
an acceptable number which means
the patient is receiving adequate
dialysis treatment. This test is a
simple blood test that is carried out
before and after dialysis treatment.
Some newer dialysis machines can
even measure this Kt/V online during
the process of dialysis without the
need for blood sampling. The Kt/V
is one of several key performance
indicators that Normah Medical
Specialist Centre (NMSC) carries
out to ensure high quality dialysis
for our patient. There are also other
performance indicators that NMSC
measures to ensure that individual
dialysis is adequate, such as quarterly
measurement of calcium, phosphate,
haemoglobin, urea and creatinine.
There are many patients who receive
dialysis but how do we know that the
dialysis is adequate for them? It is
through these performance indicators
that we can determine whether the
dialysis session is appropriate for the
individual patient or not. NMSC as
an internationally accredited hospital
is required to measure and record
all these performance indicators for
individual patients in order to show
that dialysis patients receive proper
quality and standard of care. This is
very important, as dialysis is a means
to an end. What outcome is affected
by the dialysis is important. The
primary outcome that we are looking
for is to improve quality of life and
increase the survival of these patients.
In summation, the number of endstage kidney failure patients is on the
rise in Malaysia. Kidney replacement
therapy (including haemodialysis,
peritoneal dialysis and kidney
transplant) is the standard of care
for this growing group of patients.
To ensure good quality dialysis
treatment, we routinely monitor
important dialysis performance
indicators to guide us on the
adequacy of dialysis we provide to
our end-stage kidney failure patients.
With adequate dialysis treatment,
the quality of life of this group of
unfortunate patients can be improved.

Minimally invasive
colorectal
greater
surgery offers
benefits
Early detection is crucial if treatment
and surgery were to be successful.
And while the traditional method
of surgery to remove the affected
parts of the colon and rectum
requires an incision of between
15cm and 25cm to be made on the
abdomen, leaving a rather nasty scar
afterwards, patients nowadays have
a more feasible option of undergoing
minimally invasive colorectal surgery.
olorectal cancer is a
growing health threat
here in Malaysia. In
fact, it is the second
most common type of
cancer after breast cancer, and affects
men more than it does women.
Dr. Shehab Phung Chee Wei,
Consultant General, Laparoscopic
& Robotic Surgeon at Kuching
Specialist Hospital explains: “Surgery
causes stress to the body. The more
incisions there are the more stress
they cause to
the body. And
when there’s
more stress
to the body,
the recovery
time will be
prolonged.
The World Health Organisation’s
2008 Globocan report revealed that
one in 33 Malaysians face the risk of
developing colorectal cancer.
With minimally invasive
surgery, invasiveness
is cut down, scars are
reduced and most
C
importantly, the recovery
process is faster.
Minimally invasive colorectal surgery
uses highly advanced technology
including a miniature camera and
specialised equipment that go into
the abdomen via thin tubes known
as trocars, which are inserted via
small incisions measuring between
0.5cm and 1cm. The entire process
is displayed on a monitor with the
images enlarged, thus allowing
greater accuracy.
“Pain is lessened, you can start to
move around faster and your body
will get used to it better, and it is
cheaper in the long run as recovery
time will be cut short and you
can get back to work sooner,” he
added. Other benefits include fewer
post-surgery complications and early
return of bowel functions.
While awareness on this method
is still low among Malaysians, it is
hoped that many would come to
learn of its benefits and choose to
go for minimally invasive colorectal
surgery in the future.

Sarawak’s
Pride in
MasterChef
Asia
Meet Jasbir Kuar,
Sarawak’s very own contestant
representing Malaysia in the
ever-popular cooking show
MasterChef Asia. In her
recent interview with Borneo
Talk, Jasbir shared her thrills
and spills in her dream come
true opportunity of a lifetime.
MasterChef Asia is now
airing every Thursday at 9pm
on Lifetime (Astro Ch 709).
Why did you want to join
MasterChef Asia?
I have always been a fan of all the
MasterChef shows on television and
when the opportunity arose, I was
encouraged by my husband and
children to try out as a contestant. I
also wanted a platform that would
give me a voice to help promote
healthy cooking and eating.
How long have you been cooking?
I have been cooking since the age
of 8 or 9. Coming from a Punjabi
family; my mother insisted that I
learn to make chappatis and some
vegetarian curries to appease my
mother-in-law one day when I got
married. So that’s how I ended up in
the kitchen learning to cook.
What goes through your head
when you have to do a Mystery
Box challenge, when you have to
cook on the spot with a bunch of
surprise ingredients?
For a Mystery Box Challenge,
I personally look for a familiar
ingredient that I have worked with
before or have some knowledge of
and make it my base. I then add or
eliminate other ingredients that I
think will or will not go well with it.
This helps me to create a dish with
the limited ingredients available.
How do you work through
a pressure test? Was there a
moment that you feel like you
cannot go through another
pressure test again?
Every day you are faced with a
pressure test. The pressure of
creating the best dish and staying in
the competition for as long as you
can is stressful. There were many
moments when I felt that I could
not go through another day but my
husband’s advice of taking one step
at a time and not get overwhelmed
helped me through these moments.
How is your relationship with all
the other participants?
All 15 of us have become the best

increased your confidence in
cooking?
I have a whole new perspective on
food and the show after joining
MasterChef Asia. It is easy to sit on
the sofa at home and comment about
everything I saw on the MasterChef
shows but actually being on one and
experiencing it was a whole new ball
game. I have learned so much about
myself. I learned that I can cook really
well under pressure and the skills and
tips learned from the 3 judges will help
me for the rest of my cooking career.
Would you share your experience
and knowledge with your children
or any others? How do you intend
to share the experiences?
I would love to share my experience
and knowledge of cooking with my
children and others.
As a caterer I would love to expand
my business to cater to more people.
I also conduct cooking and baking
classes from home for both young
and old cooking enthusiasts. I would
love to write a cook book for young
mothers and busy adults. A weekly
or monthly column in a magazine or
newspaper would be a wonderful
way to share my knowledge of
healthy eating too.
How does it feel to be in the
inaugural show of MasterChef
Asia? Were there any sacrifices
that you have to make in order
to be there?
It’s an honour and privilege to be part
of the inaugural show of MasterChef
Asia. I also feel pride in representing
Sarawak. I have lived here for over
29 years and have grown so fond of
the food and people.
Finally, what would your advice
be for future contestants?
Take the opportunity; join MasterChef
Asia Season 2! Let it pave the way for
your future. Be brave and reach out
to your dreams. Age should never be
an excuse. Look at me, I just turned
55 and am still learning and enjoying
every moment!
of friends; I can say friends for life.
When you go through a competition
like this; bonds form that are hard
to break. We shared pain, sorrow,
joy and laughter together during the
whole competition.
Are you grateful to be one of the
privileged few to learn and cook
with/for these 3 highly-rated
judges?
I really feel privileged to have the
opportunity to cook for and learn
from Susur Lee, Bruno Ménard and
Audra Morrice. If I had not joined
MasterChef Asia I would never have
gotten the opportunity to meet
them, let alone cook for them.
Having them taste my food was a
dream come true and an honour!
Having participated in
MasterChef Asia, do you think
that the opportunity had
broadened your perspective,
knowledge and skills towards
cooking and at the same time

score or the A+; rather than the score
alone? How would one ensure that
their child/children continue to have
the Love of Learning?
This Love of Learning should
be instilled from a very young age.
Observation is a good start with plenty
of exposure. Early Childhood Educators
are now equipped with sufficient
skills to assist a child in ensuring their
continued Love of Learning.
How does one determine the type of
care to ensure this continued Love
of Learning in a play-based
environment for a young child? How
to determine which babysitter or Taska
will do the job?
The major difference between
these choices is the level of care
and education. These are both
important but are frequently in direct
competition. To have the best level of
care is to have the traditional nanny
or full day babysitter, while
to have the best level of
education is to have the full-fledged
early learning based day care, which
are highly commercialised.
Most Taskas lean towards education.
However, neither care nor education
can be neglected and are equally
important. So, who and how can both
care and education be balanced?
The third type of care intricately
balances both care and education,
and is known an Early Childhood
Education Centre.
Coupling Early Childhood Educators
with an Early Childhood Education
Centre, with the appropriate play
based learning syllabus; one can be
sure that the Love of Learning
will be instilled and nurtured to
greater heights. The simple task
of identifying a child’s Emerging
Interest is the best beginning. When
one loves what one does, one will
excel in it. This approach opens many
doors of opportunity for the child
from the youngest possible age; all in
a subtle play-based approach.
The example of this being carried
out to perfection is the Montesorri
System. The critical balance between
care and learning is intricately carried
out daily.
They say that it takes an entire village
or community to raise a child. Thus,
a child needs plenty of exposure and
a variety of experiences with different
environments and people.
Taska Manna is a Catholic-based Early
Childhood Education centre that
provides the balance of care AND
education. Please feel free to drop by
and see for yourself how we nurture
the Love of Learning in our
children, whom we are blessed to
have been entrusted to provide Early
Childhood Education.
