Year-end Checklist for
Charitable Gift Planning
Just a few facts to keep in mind as you consider gifts
before year-end:
• Complete all gifts by December 31 to qualify for tax
savings on this year’s tax return. (If mailing a check,
it must be postmarked by the post office no later than
December 31 to qualify.)
• Keep all receipts and acknowledgement letters,
especially for gifts of $250 or more.
• If you have sold securities this year and will be subject
to capital gains tax, remember that gifts of cash or other
securities may partially or fully offset tax on your
gains.
• For increased tax benefits, fund your gifts using
securities that are worth more than you paid for them
and that you have owned more than one year.
• Special benefits can come from gifts of retirement
plan assets.
Always check with your advisors to determine the
best gift giving vehicle for your circumstances.
If considering a gift to the AETN Foundation,
you can also contact Karen Cooper, at 1-800662-2386 or [email protected], who will be
happy to work with you and your advisors on the
specifics of your gift.

From theA E T NFoundation
Dear Friends,
Celebrate the season with us! It’s
hard to believe that the end of the
year is already here and the new
year is just around the corner. As
we come to year end, I know this is
a time when many people plan their charitable giving for
the year. This year, those decisions are even harder. The
difficult economy has, in some way, affected us all. There
are simply too many needs around each of us and too few
dollars to go around. It makes charitable giving decisions all
the more difficult.
I hope as you are thinking about your charitable giving, that
you will consider the importance of your gifts to the AETN
Foundation. AETN isn’t just a television station though that’s
what most people think of when they think of AETN. AETN
provides countless hours of programming each year that is
used in our schools, we provide professional development
and training opportunities to Arkansas teachers, we tell the
story of Arkansas through local documentaries and programs,
we provide a quality of television programming that just
can’t be found on any other channel available and we are
commercial free.
That’s an easy list for me to provide to you, but let me get
a bit more personal. I have a four year old nephew and a
five year old niece. They use our children’s programming on
a daily basis. Karley, my niece, loves Clifford The Big Red
Dog. It’s easy to understand the value of this program by
watching the impact that it makes on her. She is learning
important issues like learning to share and the importance
of manners. She’s learning these important life lessons at
the same time that she’s being entertained. My nephew
Jackson’s favorite show is Caillou. Caillou is an animated
program that encourages imagination and adventure. Jackson recently became a big-brother and I know this important
transition in his life was made easier by the life lessons that
he learned from watching Caillou.

A r k a n s a s
I have a friend who has an autistic son whose favorite
programs is Word World. When he watches Word World he
gives it his undivided attention and is 100% involved in the
program. By the end of an episode, he is spelling words
and singing along with the songs. For my friend, this is an
invaluable resource for her son that keeps him entertained
while at the same time learning.
I have an older friend who has been a member of AETN
for a number of years. He’s a World War II veteran who
just celebrated his 84th birthday. He isn’t able to get out
of the house as much as he used to and AETN has become
an invaluable window to the world for him. He enjoys
Lawrence Welk weekly, but also many of the other programs
that AETN provides.
I could give many more examples of how people use the
programs and services that AETN provides. I’m sure that
you could add your own experiences to the list. Stories like
these are the reason that I personally earmark a portion of
my charitable dollars to the AETN Foundation.
I know there are many worthy charities, but I hope that
you’ll continue to have the AETN Foundation on your list.
If the end of the calendar year is when you are making your
charitable gifts, consider the AETN Foundation. It is tax
deductible and it makes more of a difference than you may
ever know.

Bill Valentine
ill Valentine, a Central
Arkansas native who was
instrumental in Arkansas sports
and particularly the Arkansas
Travelers, is also a key member
of the AETN Foundation Board
of Directors. He has served as a
Board Member since 2007.
Valentine has often referred to the Travs as being “The Greatest Show
on Dirt.” He carries this sentiment into his work on the Board, helping to
put AETN into the greatest TV category, offering viewers a wide variety of
educational and entertaining programming where there is something for
everyone.
“Aside from the educational value, AETN is important to the state because
it also allows viewers to see programs they would never see on network or
cable TV,” Valentine said.
Valentine was the executive vice president for the Arkansas Travelers for
more than 30 years, was inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame and
the Texas League Hall of Fame, and participated in a myriad of other sports
triumphs, inlcuding being the youngest person to umpire professionally. He
has led a stellar career in media as well, chatting up his love for baseball and
sports in general.
He also served on the staff of the late former Lt. Gov. Win Rockefeller as
Assistant Executive Director and later Executive Director of the Arkansas
Republican Party.
Despite all his commitments and accomplishments, Valentine still finds time to
dedicate to AETN and encourages others to get involved.
“Pick up the telephone and call AETN. Voice what you might like to become a
part of,” Valentine said. “You won’t be disappointed.”

Grand Canyon Adventure: River at Risk
Tuesday, Dec. 1, 7 p.m.
The Colorado is one of the most environmentally threatened
rivers in the world. GRAND CANYON ADVENTURE: RIVER
AT RISK, originally produced for Imax theatres, follows a
rafting expedition down its length by author/anthropologist
Wade Davis and renowned river advocate Robert F. Kennedy,
Jr. Accompanied by their daughters, Tara Davis and Kick
Kennedy, the journey is both a rite of passage
for the young women and a dramatic commentary on the
most pressing environmental story of our time – the world's
growing shortage of fresh water.

A Girl’s Life
Wednesday, Dec. 30, 7 p.m.
Girls entering adulthood in the next decade will see more opportunities than today’s women ever imagined. Will these girls stride confidently through newly opened doors or are they destined to be stunted by societal messages that tell them
females should be constantly agreeable, impossibly thin and sexy above all else?
Author and educator Rachel Simmons examines the challenges facing young women as they surf the waves of 21st-century adolescence. Simmons interviews parents, psychologists, teachers and social workers who are helping nurture girls into capable, resilient adults. She also talks with four girls who tell their own deeply personal tales of dealing with issues like cyber-bullying, body image and violence. With courage and determination, these girls reveal their hopes and dreams for a powerful future.

Will your Charitable Gifts
from an IRA be taxed?
Did you know?
Unless Congress extends the law to apply for future
years, 2009 is the last year that individuals age
70 ½ and older can make tax-free charitable gifts
directly from IRA funds that would be subject to
tax if withdrawn voluntarily or under mandatory
withdrawal requirements. To qualify, charitable
gifts must be made from a traditional or Roth IRA.
Charitable distributions to one or more charities,
totaling up to $100,000, may be made for 2009.
Check with your advisors about the best ways to take
advantage of this giving opportunity and to direct
your gifts to the charitable interests of your choice.

AETN Launches New Online Educational Project
In 2007, AETN was one of the first recipients of a grant that provided seed money for the development of new public
service initiatives. Upon receipt, AETN was charged with the creation of digital education content for use in middle school
classrooms. Public television stations in Alabama (APT), Maryland (MPT), and Kentucky (KET) were also awarded grants.
The four-state networks agreed to use the funds to concentrate their efforts on a timely and specific content area:
mathematics instruction for middle-school-aged children. Titled Public Television (PTV) Science, Technology, Engineering
and Math (STEM) Collaborative, the project has developed a model for other stations and communities to emulate and
adopt. The content area was selected because numerous studies have shown how American school children have fallen
behind academically in the STEM subjects.
AETN recently launched a new online resource designed for middle school students to enhance their understanding of
ratios, measurements, and proportional reasoning. AETN’s Rock-n Roll Road Trip World Tour invites students to take their
band on a world tour while using math to solve real-life challenges. The content is aligned to Arkansas math standards as
well as the National standards for mathematics.
As a band member, students will visit cities such as Rio, London, Barcelona, Paris, and Tokyo. While in these places
students explore the city and its culture by completing math challenges. The project also includes an educator’s resource
page which provides teachers with lesson plans that include group and individual in-class activities, and a take-home
assignment that can be used for enrichment. Cool facts about all the cities are listed on educator’s resource page. The
Project has an educational video component that helps students understand how math is used various careers.
Arkansas’ teachers who have evaluated the Project, shared that it is appropriately challenging and engaging. Science
and Math are critical to successful students and this project takes the next step in the digital classroom.

Back for a special encore presentation in
December AETN Presents: On the Front
Row headliners include:
Join Kane Webb, Rex Nelson and Bill Vickery as they
trek through Arkansas and Mississippi on the trail of the
best tamales. Filmed over the course of two days during
the summer of 2008, On the Tamale Trail examines
the beginnings of the Delta tamale and how it became
a mainstay in the diet of Southerners early in the 20th
century. Most likely brought to the area by migrant-farm
workers in the 1920’s, tamales are a traditional Mexican
dish consisting of steam-cooked corn dough (masa) with or
without a filling. The hot tamales of the Delta are cornmeal
and have been adapted to regional tastes; with each tamale
maker using their own combination of spices and broth to
infuse flavor.
The “tamale-guys” visit some of the best “tamale-dens”
in the two state area, including Pasquale’s Hot Tamales
in Helena/West Helena, White Front Café in Rosedale,
Rhoda’s Hot Tamale in Lake Village and of course Doe’s
Eat Place in Greenville, Mississippi. Don’t miss out on this
funny and entertaining journey into the world of tamales,
