From the AETN Foundation
Dear Viewers,
As you know, August is one of the three
times a year we come to you directly
and ask for your financial support during
our membership campaigns. What we
probably don’t talk about enough when we
are visiting with you on-air during our drives
is volunteers. Without volunteers from all
across the state, AETN simply wouldn’t be able to do all that we do.
Plus, we love our volunteers. Many of our volunteers come every
membership campaign, we have a volunteer group that comes to the
offices in Conway on Tuesday and Friday afternoons every week, we
have volunteers who come and operate camera for the weekly taping
of Arkansas Week every Friday and we have volunteers who are
willing to do just about anything that we ask them to do. Simply put,
we are better because of our volunteers.
Many of you are familiar with one of AETN’s first volunteers, Jane
Krutz. Ms. Jane has been volunteering for AETN since before AETN
signed on the air in 1966. In honor of Ms. Jane’s years of volunteer
service, the AETN Foundation created the Jane Krutz Volunteer
Program Endowment in 2007. Through the endowment, which will
allow the AETN Foundation to sustain an active volunteer program,
Jane’s name and memory will live on forever. The support of
dedicated volunteers like Ms. Jane is vital to the success of AETN.
On September 30, 2010, the day before her 85th birthday, Jane
Krutz will be honored at AETN Foundation Honors Jane Krutz, a
luncheon in celebration of Jane’s extraordinary life and more than 45
years of service to AETN. All of the proceeds of this event will go into
the AETN Foundation Jane Krutz Volunteer Program Endowment.
I hope that you’ll consider joining us at the event. Details are included
here for your review and, of course, we are always available at
1-800-662-2386 if you would like more details or to find out how
you can be involved. If you are not available to attend, perhaps you’ll
consider making a tax deductible gift to the AETN Foundation Jane
Krutz Volunteer Endowment.

their children, AETN productions such as “Exploring
Arkansas,” “Men and Women of Distinction”
and a variety of documentaries provide programs
appropriate for the entire family. AETN’s daytime
line-up of children’s programs provides language,
math, science and other skills. Web-based sites
help parents locate and connect to resources
specific to their needs and the needs of their
children. Interactive games available through the
AETN Web site help children (and their parents)
master new skills. AETN is definitely Arkansas’s
“education station.”
AETN’S COMMITTMENT TO HELPING PARENTS
Just as students have different needs and
interests, parents are different in how they help
their children learn. AETN provides a variety of
resources to empower parents to be effective
teachers for their own children,. For parents

GRADE-BY-GRADE LEARNING GUIDES
Parents may be uncertain about what their children
should be learning at their grade level, how
they will learn it and what to expect as a person
very actively involved in their children’s learning
process. In order to help parents better understand
the school experience, PBS has prepared a series
of guides to explain the grade-by-grade teaching

NURTURING THE PARENT-TEACHER
RELATIONSHIP
Effective communications takes work and
attention, but it is well worth the effort. One
of the most critical areas of communication
is between parents and a child’s teacher or
teachers. PBS Parents has some helpful advice
about establishing and maintaining these lines of
communication. Suggestions include respecting
the relationship, allowing children to develop their
own relationships with the teacher, trying not to
brag, and remembering how parents felt about
their own teachers. More information is available
at http://www.pbs.org/parents/goingtoschool/
nuturing.html.

The story of Sissy’s Log Cabin began on an afternoon in 1970 when Sissy Jones noticed a log cabin
that was for sale as she was driving down U.S. Highway 79. Sissy, who is an avid collector of antiques,
pulled into the doughnut shop across the street and called the number. She then began renting the
cabin for $50 a month and stocked it with antiques from her attic and home. The cabin itself was in
pretty bad shape, but this did not bother her or her eternal optimism. Soon the word began to spread
about the wonderful finds that could be found at Sissy’s Log Cabin, where Sissy made her living by
appraising and selling her antiques.
Since 1970, Sissy’s Log Cabin has been a family owned and operated
jewelry store. They pride themselves on quality and customer service. The
staff of experienced professionals has received numerous awards on both
the state and national levels. Sissy’s Log Cabin has evolved into Arkansas
largest independently owned jewelry store with 12,000 square feet
of showroom filled with diamonds, jewelry, estate jewelry, fine gifts
and fabulous antiques. Sissy’s is proud to be a sponsor of Antiques
Roadshow USA and AETN.
