Monday - Friday.
agriculture in a fun, engaging, hands on environment. The Club has openings
for adult Master Gardeners to help guide the kids through growing produce.
Volunteers will work with the kids to complete everyday tasks maintaining the
gardens. There is a need for skilled volunteers to help with activity planning,
garden planning, planting, harvest and pest management. Time commitment
varies based on task. A volunteer can spend one afternoon in the garden or
stay the season to guide activities. This is an opportunity to encourage the next
generation of gardeners.

to expand your experiences and knowledge? MSU Tollgate
Gardens are the perfect place for you. Here is the
opportunity to continue your education by working side by
side with seasoned gardeners. These smart and welcoming gardeners are always happy to share
their knowledge. Tollgate has many small gardens centered around the farm buildings.
Plant-A-Row for the Hungry garden volunteers grow vegetables to donate yearly in Oakland
County.
Being a Tollgate volunteer has many advantages: participating in monthly programs and speakers,
sharing your gardening experiences and making new gardening friends. Tollgate hosts several
major events each year, the Plant Sale on the first weekend in June, the July Open House, which
shows off the gardens and the Fall Fair, which draws families from all of the neighboring
communities.
Tollgate is a 160 acre "oasis" located in the heart of Novi at the corner of Meadowbrook & 12 Mile
Rds. Just look for the long white fence. The farm is open to the public Monday - Saturday. More

MGSOC Volunteering at Charles L. Bowers School Farm
While there are many places to earn your volunteer hours, one of the most delightful sites is
working at the 94-acre Charles L. Bowers School Farm in Bloomfield Hills. The emphasis of the
Bowers Farm is on educational activities for all age groups, group tours, and 4-H clubs. It’s a
working school farm that’s part of the Bloomfield Hills School District and has live animals and
many activities going on throughout the gardening season. Here, whether you’re a seasoned
gardener or an MG in training, your thoughts, creativity and design skills are welcome, along with
your shovels, rakes and pruners. The property also includes the Barton Farm House and log cabin
moved to the site in 2009. This year we will be adding signage to all plants so you can test your
horticulture expertise in helping us name the existing plants.
We work at the farm two days a week – Saturday and Wednesday, beginning at 8:30 a.m. We
added some new garden areas last year, and we maintain the Barton Farm house gardens and log
cabin area, as well as update and redesign existing gardens. Bowers Farm also has a Plant A Row
(PAR) garden which raises and donates vegetables and herbs to a local food bank.
The address of the farm is 1219 E. Square Lake Rd., Bloomfield Hills, 48304. Enter the farm from
the Square Lake Road entrance (at the white farm house), parking is located in that area by the big
red barn.

Meadow Brook Garden Club Invites Gardeners
Meadow Brook Garden Club maintains the gardens on the estate grounds of the Meadow Brook
Hall at 480 South Adams Road in Rochester MI on Tuesday mornings. All who are interested in
gardening are invited to join in helping to maintain these beautiful
gardens designated as a Proven Winners Signature
Garden. Master Gardeners and Candidates will earn Volunteer
Hours toward your Master Gardener required hours. Experience is
not required since each garden has a captain who will assist the
volunteers. 2016 Gardening Days are every Tuesday morning
through October 18, from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Gardeners meet in
the garden tent for coffee and assignments before going to work in
the gardens. Bring hand tools (pruners, trowel, cultivator) and any other gardening items that you
normally use. Come and join us and meet fellow gardening enthusiasts. For further information,

Gleaners Food Bank’s Garden in Farmington Hills
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED at Gleaners Food Bank’s garden in Farmington Hills. Our garden grows fresh
produce for food pantries, soup kitchens, and other agencies that feed the hungry in our
community. The gardens also provide nutrition workshops to kids, using hands-on gardening to get
them excited about fruits and veggies. We are in need of volunteers to complete garden tasks such
as seeding, planting, weeding, composting, mulching, and harvesting. No gardening experience is
required. All ages are welcome, but volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
If you are an experienced gardener, please consider becoming a Lead Gardener. These individuals
lead small groups of volunteers who are new to gardening. It
is a great opportunity to spread your knowledge of gardening
while helping out a good cause.

Rochester Looking for Volunteers for Howlett Park
The Rochester City Beautiful Commission is looking for volunteers to help with the removal of
invasive plants in Howlett Park on Saturday, May 21st; and possibly Sunday, May 22nd. Sunday
work will only be scheduled if all of the removals are not completed by the end of the day on
Saturday. The park is located at the corner of Inglewood and Romeo Road.
Approximately 15 to 20 volunteers are needed to assist the Parks Department staff with the
removal of these plants specifically in the wooded area surrounding the pond. Individuals, families
and groups are all welcome (over the age of 15, please). The cleanup will take place from
9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day and volunteers can sign up for the full day or a specific timeframe.
Prior to the volunteer event, professionals will identify the specific plantings to be removed. On
the volunteer day, some plantings will need to be dug out of the ground, while small growth can
be cut and treated. Other individuals will be needed to help take the debris to designated areas for
removal. No prior experience in invasive removal is needed. Please dress for garden work; ideally
long pants and sleeves, closed toed shoes and work gloves. Please bring loppers if you are
comfortable using them.

EMMANUEL COMMUNITY FARM
The Farm is open for our 9th growing season, on Sundays, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Wednesdays,
3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at 23425 Lahser Road, Southfield, 48033. We are on the west side of Lahser
just north of 9 Mile Road. We will be weeding and working the compost pile, readying the beds for
spring. Irrigation lines have been tagged and will be placed in their new positions for 2016. We
will start early plantings.
The Farm is a completely volunteer charitable program to
help feed the needy in SE Michigan. We do things as
organically as possible, and donate everything we grow to
Forgotten Harvest. As we need the help of any volunteer
willing to come, we also need the expertise of Master
Gardeners. It would be a good place to learn
and sharpen your organic gardening skills.

6th Annual Habitat for Humanity Flower and Plant Sale
Master Gardener volunteers needed to staff the 6th annual Habitat for Humanity Flower and Plant
Sale. This event will be held at Culver’s, located ½ mile north of the Palace on Lapeer Rd. at Dutton
Rd. in Lake Orion. Volunteers will be needed on Friday, May 6th from 2:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. and
Saturday, May 7th from 8:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Number of hours worked and shifts are
flexible. Work includes setting up sales area with pleasing displays according to cultural
requirements of plants, assisting customers with sales transactions and “right plant right place”
choices. Looking for friendly outgoing people who enjoy sharing their knowledge. Please contact

The Temple Emanu-El Community Garden
You Can Make a Difference and Do What You Love to Do.
The Temple Emanu-El Community Garden cultivates 18 raised beds for donation to senior citizens in
our community. Starting with seeds in our indoor grow-light shelves, we grow a wide variety of
vegetables and flowers. Many of the recipients are elderly Russians who remember a lifestyle of
growing their own produce in the Soviet countryside and the community garden gives them a
welcome opportunity to eat fresh and organic once again. In fact, the garden produce is so anxiously
anticipated that much of it is “self-harvested” before the garden crew can get to it!
The garden crew is composed of members of Temple Emanu-El and non-members, master gardeners
and weekend garden enthusiasts, and residents of the Jewish senior housing next door. We
coordinate activities with our religious school students several times in the growing season as well.
Volunteers needed for preparing the beds on May 1st, 10 a.m.
Beginning May 1, we will meet weekly on Sundays from 10 a.m. to noon.

Spice Up Your Garden With Herbs
Come spend a few hours with us as we delve into the world of herbs! Learn fascinating folklore as well as the history,
cultural requirements and uses of many of the herbs we can grow in Michigan. We’ll have plants on hand to look at
and herbal treats as snacks. If you’ve been thinking of starting an herb garden, this is the class for you!

Harnessing Mother Nature’s Workforce—Beneficial Insects
The Meadow Brook Garden Club will meet Friday, May 20, 2016 at Meadow Brook Hall, 480 South Adams Road,
Rochester MI 48309-1904. Coffee and refreshments will be served at 9:15 a.m. with program to follow
at 10:00 a.m. featuring guest speaker, Elly Maxwell, the entomologist at the Dow Gardens in Midland.
Insects are the most abundant wildlife visitor to backyards in Michigan. Although a number of them are pests, an
even greater number are beneficial. Learn to recognize and maximize Mother Nature’s natural pest control by
harnessing the power of beneficial insects. From predators to parasitoids to pollinators, insects can be relied upon for
necessary garden chores. Guests are welcome. There is a $5 non-member donation. Reservations are not

The Hardy Plant Society ~ Great Lake’s Chapter hosts:
Dr. David L. Roberts, Senior Academic Specialist at Michigan State University who was responsible
for first identifying Emerald Ash Borer issues in Michigan.
He has worked with oak wilt for over 25 years. Oak Wilt is a lethal disease that is spreading
throughout Michigan. HPS members and other savvy gardeners will want to learn how to avoid oak
wilt, how to recognize the symptoms and effectively manage the disease once detected. This
informative and important lecture gives us the opportunity to share this timely information with our
neighbors and other gardening communities and groups in which we belong. We encourage any
local nurserymen and women to join us for updated information from Dr. Roberts as well as any
garden club program planners to hear a terrific speaker they might consider for their own groups.

Master Gardener Society of Oakland County, Inc. (MGSOC) General Meeting

The education topic is “New Annuals and Perennials for 2016” presented by
George Papadelis. George is the owner of Telly’s Greenhouse located at 3301
John R Road, Troy. As he has done in years past, George will review some of the
new annuals and perennials that will work well in our Michigan gardens. The
meeting will be held at Telly’s Greenhouse at 3301 John R. Road and will be the
first Tuesday of May. The Greenhouse will be open for shopping both before
and after our meeting. There will only be snacks served at this meeting, no
dinner due to limited space.

The education topic is “Bees of the Detroit Region: Attracting &
Recognizing Native Pollinators” presented by Rebecca
Tonietto. Rebecca is a David H. Smith conservation research
postdoctoral fellow academically based at Saint Louis University in
Missouri. Her current research is an investigation into bee
communities of shrinking cities, specifically focused on native
pollinators in community gardens and urban farms in Detroit, St. Louis
and Chicago. She completed her PhD in 2015 in Plant Biology and
Conservation, a joint program between Northwestern University and the Chicago Botanical
Garden. Rebecca has been studying native bees for over a decade in sites ranging from commercial
farms to restored prairies to green roofs. A Troy native, she is happy and excited to be doing her
research and raising her family back in Michigan after 10 years in Chicago. Rebecca will present a
description of bees, current conservation concerns, what is happening with honeybees, how to
provide habitat for bees in our yards and how to recognize common species in the region.

YOUTH EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY
Jr. Master Gardener Program

What: The 4-H Junior Master Gardener (JMG) program is a series of classes that covers the
following topics in an interactive, fun, and hands-on way: soil, plant science, vegetables, yard and
garden pests, flowers, woody plants and lawns.
Classes provide a high-quality, positive learning experience via project-based, hands-on education.
The JMG program is based on the research and expertise of Michigan State University and Master
Gardener volunteers. We hope to help kids discover that gardening is a fun and rewarding activity
and volunteering is an important part of being a good citizen of the community.
Each JMG participant must attend at least 6 classes and accumulate at least 10 volunteer hours.
Volunteer hours are accumulated by helping in the garden. Participants who complete the JMG
certification requirements above will be recognized and will receive a 4-H Junior Master Gardener
certificate.
JMG is taught by Master Gardeners—volunteers who have successfully completed the “adult
version” of JMG through MSU Extension and would like to share their enthusiasm and expertise for
gardening and volunteering with youth in our community. The instructors are screened MSU
Extension 4-H volunteers.
Cost: $40 for 4-H members, $50 for non 4-H members.
Who: Any youth 8-12 years old (age determined as of Jan. 1, 2016)

2016 MILFORD GARDEN WALK AND MARKET SALE
The Milford Garden Club presents its’ 21st Annual Garden Walk and Market Sale on Friday, June 17,
2016, 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. and Saturday, June 18, 2015, from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Rain or
Shine. Featured on this year’s walk will be five unique and diverse residential gardens in Milford
and the nearby surrounding areas. We will also be featuring the Garden Club’s Certified Monarch
Butterfly Garden in Arthur’s Park, across from Central Park.
Advance tickets may be purchased for $10.00 beginning May 16, by visiting the Milford Garden Club
web site www.themilfordgardenclub.org and completing the mail order form. Tickets may also be
purchased by visiting one of the following Downtown Milford locations: Clothing Cove, Acorn
Farms, or Milford Gardens on S. Milford Road and The Pond Place in Highland.
Tickets are $12.00 on the days of the walk and may also be purchased on Saturday at our Garden
Vendor’s site, (Location: the intersection of Liberty and Main Street in the center of Downtown
Milford) as well as the other listed locations. You may also join a raffle with awesome prizes at the
same site.

2016 Meadow Brook Garden Club
Perennial Plant Sale and Fund Raiser
The 2016 Meadow Brook Garden Club Plant Sale and Fund Raiser which is open to the public will be
held on Thursday, May 19, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Meadow Brook Hall located at 480 South
Adams Road, Rochester, MI 48309. There will be a large variety of Michigan grown plants at low
prices including some from the Meadow Brook gardens, plus a garden shop, bake sale, and silent

“Michigan Natural Areas Founders’ Footsteps Spring Hike: Historic
Haven Hill”
The North Oakland Chapter of Wild Ones is excited to present a fantastic tour, led by the Friends of Highland Recreation Area (http://www.fohravolunteers.org/).
Many people drive by the local gem known as Haven Hill on M59 every day without knowing the fascinating human
and natural history it contains. Come learn for yourself what this area has to offer!
Please join us on Wednesday, May 11 at 5:30 p.m. at Highland State Recreation Area (5200 Highland Rd, White Lake).
Note that this tour will take place outside, and the hike will involve walking on trails that have roots and rocks. Please
dress accordingly. It’s spring in MI, so be prepared for mud and bugs! Bring water and your cameras!

Waterford Garden Club Spring Plant Sale
The Waterford Garden Club will be holding its annual Spring Plant Sale on
Thursday and Friday, May 19 and 20 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the
Waterford Senior Center, 3621 Pontiac Lake Road, Waterford, 48328.
Perennials, herbs and succulents will be available along with crafts, bake sale
and raffle. This is the club’s first fundraiser of 2016 and we hope to see you
