FAUQUIER ALLIANCE FOR YOUTH
Spring, 2006
Dear Fauquier Families:
The Fauquier Alliance for Youth is pleased to help publish The Youth Guide –Fauquier’s resource for youth activities
and services. We hope that The Youth Guide makes it easy to find useful information on local programs and services.
With the goal of getting Fauquier’s youth more active in positive activities when school is not in session, we encourage
you to get your children involved. Research shows that what goes on outside the classroom, after the school day is
done, directly affects how well students perform in school. We also know that juvenile crime is at its highest during
the hours of 3pm and 6pm. If you would like to get your child involved in local activities but need assistance, please
do not hesitate to call. We will do everything we can to help.
We are aware that programs and services may not be included. Please let us know if you have a program to include or
would like to see additional information in future publications. We would like The Youth Guide to be as informative as
possible and look forward to your input.
By working together as a community, we can make a difference in the lives of our children!

Fauquier Habitat for
Humanity, Inc.
A non-profit Christian building ministry that
provides simple decent shelter with God's
people in need. Our mission is to eliminate
poverty housing in Fauquier and
Rappahannock counties. More than 400
families in Fauquier County alone, live in
shacks without running water or indoor
plumbing. Many have no source of heat,
leaking roofs and dirt floors.
We build new homes and rehabilitate poverty housing working in partnership with families. We offer a hand up, not a hand out.
Our partner families must complete 400
hours of “sweat equity” before the house is
complete. We sell the homes to the families
for whatever it costs to build, we charge no
profit. We take back a no-interest mortgage
to repay the loan, usually for 20-25 years.
Our homes are built by volunteers, thus
keeping the cost to a minimum.
Opportunities are available for youth to participate in various tasks based on age.
Youth 14-16 can do limited work on the
sites such as painting and landscaping but
should not be on the job sites while building. Youth 16 through 18 are not permitted
to operate power tools, do excavating,
demolition or work at heights greater than
six feet or do roofing. They can do general
carpentry. Waivers for medical treatment
and guardianship must be signed by an
adult.
Fauquier Habitat for Humanity offers a
wonderful opportunity for moms, dads and
children to work together on projects that
truly benefit our community. Many area
churches partner with Habitat and organize
groups to build with us on Saturday
mornings. See our web page for more

Volunteer Opportunities for Youth
INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING
YOUR TIME TO A LOCAL
CHARITY OR COMMUNITY
ORGANIZATION?
Young people are active, empowered members of our community. Last year alone,
15.5 million teenagers contributed more
than 1.3 billion hours through volunteering.
This represents 55% of American teenagers
spending time helping their communities,
schools, and churches.
There are many reasons to start volunteering:
• To help others and create positive change
• To learn about an activity or organization
that interests you
• To beat boredom (if you find yourself
sitting around the house feeling totally
bored, volunteering in an activity you
enjoy can be a great way to change
things)
• To gain perspective on life (there is no
better way to understand your blessings
than to help people in need)
• To learn new skills and meet new people
• To help fill out that college or job
application
• To Make a Difference!
The listings below only represent a small
portion of the total number of volunteer
opportunities in Fauquier County. There are
also many opportunities to volunteer with
your schools, churches, local government,
and with community events such as the
American Cancer Society's annual Relay for
Life and Warrenton's Spring Festival.
Think about the things that you enjoy doing
then explore your options and most important, HAVE FUN AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE in Fauquier County!
After-School Programs
The Boys and Girls Club is always looking
for high schools students to help with its
