20, 2010. Please access our website at http://curry.eduschool.virginia.edu/sep or contact our office for course descriptions and
applications in our other locations).
What are our program goals?
For over 25 years, the Saturday Enrichment Program has offered unique learning opportunities to over 20,000 highly capable
young children. Our instructors develop courses intended to:
 Expose students to new areas of interest and extend existing understandings
 Provide intellectual stimulation through interaction with other students with similar interests and abilities
 Provide learning experiences which challenge the students and target their learning preferences
 Encourage creative and critical thinking and problem solving
 Foster skills for independent learning
 Build collaboration skills
 Develop habits of mind of the professional in a specific discipline or across disciplines
Who should apply?
Students in grades K-5 who are currently participating in a gifted program and/or who demonstrate above average abilities
and/or achievement in one or more areas should apply. Home school students who exhibit the same characteristics are also
welcome to apply. Applicants should demonstrate a desire to learn and the ability to work independently as well as
cooperatively in a classroom setting. Previous application or acceptance to the program has no bearing on the consideration
of this application.
What is the cost?
The cost is $175 for one course.
How do we pay?
If accepted, we will send you information about how to pay. Payment is due upon notification of acceptance and no later than
January 4, 2010. Prompt payment prevents forfeiture of your child’s placement. We accept credit card payments online (Visa
and Mastercard only), checks, and money orders. UVA requires that you provide your social security number on the check. We
will not retain this number in our office. No refunds are possible after January 8, 2010.
Are financial scholarships available?
$50 scholarships are available for students who are eligible for their school’s free/reduced lunch program; this scholarship
reduces the total cost to $125.00
How many courses may students apply for?
Students should indicate which classes they would most like to take by prioritizing at least their top 4 choices or more if they
wish. Every effort will be made to place qualifying students in their top choice of class.
How do I apply?
Parents complete Parts I and II of the application form. Your child’s teacher completes Part III of the application form. Send
all forms together (Parts I, II, III) to the address listed below. ONLY complete application packets will be considered.

Grades K – 1
Two Course Choices:
Undersea Explorers
Domo Arigato, A Cultural Study of Japan
Survival of the Adaptable
Journey into the Australian Outback
NOTE: Students must be at least five years old by February 1, 2010 and enrolled in kindergarten
Undersea Explorers
Calling all marine biologists! Get ready to set sail on an adventure into the ocean. In this
class, we’ll explore the ocean as an ecosystem. What animals live in deep ocean water
versus the surface? How does the ocean sustain life? Using a variety of “minds-on”
learning experiences that include the incorporation of music and literature, we’ll learn
about that what makes our oceans truly unique.
Domo Arigato, A Cultural Study of Japan
Have you ever wondered why Japan is known as the “Land of the Rising Sun?” Join me in
discovering an answer to this question as we explore idea of culture through the study of
Japan. Each week, we’ll learn how cultural elements such as folk tale, geography, the
history of Japan work together to make this country unique. You’ll even learn a little
Japanese language along the way!
Survival of the Adaptable
How would you protect yourself on a cold, windy day? How would an animal protect
itself? Want to find out the different ways animals adapt to survive in their environment?
In this class, we’ll discover the many ways animals react to their changing environment
through observation and hands on experiments. Each week we will view animals in their
habitat and answer questions about the adaptations they need to survive in a particular
environment. Come and join us in our journey of discovery about the animals around us!
Journey into the Australian Outback
Gooday Mate! Get ready to journey with us on a safari to the Australian Outback, where we
will explore the culture of this amazing continent! Each week, we’ll look at different
elements of culture ranging from storytelling using Aboriginal icon to life on the Savannah.
By the end of this class, you’ll be able to show how the different elements of culture work
together to make this continent unique. Be prepared for many hands-on and minds-on
learning experiences!
Grades 2 – 3
Four Course Choices:
Math and Science Mysteries: The Art of Problem Solving
Write now!
From the Ground Up: Exploring the Origins of Food
Math and Science Mysteries: The Art of Problem Solving
Do
you like to solve mysteries? If so, this is the class for you! Throughout our time together,
we’ll explore how scientists and mathematicians think and go about “the art of problem
solving.” We’ll ask questions such as: Is there a way to determine when a bubble will pop?
How can we design a test to determine which brand of gum is “best?” From just a few
clues, using only a few materials, how would you solve a challenging problem? Get ready
to answer these questions and more as we design and conduct investigations that pose
great mysteries. You’ll leave each class with some amazing experiences to share at home!
Write Now!
Do you like to write? Have you ever wondered how people (including yourself) express
ideas in multiple ways? Join me as we explore the concept of expression through written
forms such as advertising, poetry, and news. You will also have a chance to write and
express your own thoughts in a unique way. Bring your creativity and imagination and get
ready to “write now.”
From the Ground Up: Exploring the Origins of Food
Where on earth did you get that sandwich? Do you know what goes into your daily bread
and meat? In this class, we will embark on a world tour to discover the places where our
staple foods and our delightful flavorings originated. Each week, we will discover how a
country’s land, climate, and culture work together to produce delicious dishes. Students
will become expert food researchers and learn how to report their findings to fellow
researchers!
Grades 4 – 5
Four Course Choices:
The Animal Kingdom: A Strange and Fascinating Place
Money and Investments
Artistic Style: Are you a Michelangelo or a Pablo?
Fractured Fairy Tales
The Animal Kingdom: A Strange and Fascinating Place
Animals do some strange things; why is it that Beta fish puff up their gills and breathe
faster when they see another Beta fish? Why do planarians (flat worms) prefer the dark
over sunlight? These questions and more will be answered through scientific
investigations that you will design and conduct in our own zoological laboratory. Join me
in taking a deeper look at the relationship between the structure, function, and
adaptations of a wide variety of animals while making key comparisons between animal
species!
Money and Investments
Where does our money come from and how is it used? In this class, we will begin with
learning what money is and how it is created. We will then learn about how money is
distributed and will explore various investment vehicles including common securities,
bonds, mutual funds, and even options and derivatives. The causes and failures of many of
our banks will also be discussed, as well as risk management and insurance. Come and
learn what money is all about!
Artistic Style: Are You a Michelangelo or a Pablo?
What shapes artistic style? What is your artistic style? In this class, we will explore the
notion of artistic style by looking closely at the work of experts representing several
historical periods. Get ready to dive into the worlds and works of people such as
Michelangelo, Da Vinci, and Picasso. Throughout our time together, you will have the
opportunity to create many masterpieces using the techniques and mediums of these
artists while ultimately discovering your own artistic style!
Fractured Fairy Tales
How would the Prince describe his first meeting with Cinderella? What do you think the
Fairy Godmother was thinking? In this class, we will explore the concept of perspective.
What is perspective? How does perspective shape our interpretation of a situation? Each
week, we’ll use a variety of Fairy Tales representing cultures from around the world to
explore these questions and more. Bring your imagination!
