GRSC 7880S: Community-Engaged Research Methods
A cross-disciplinary course supporting the Graduate Portfolio in Community Engagement

Modules Included in GRSC 7880S
GRSC 7880S Has Arrived!
This new course supports graduate students campus-wide who are interested in
incorporating community-based work into their teaching, scholarship, and
outreach. GRSC 7880S complements the existing Service-Learning Course Design
(GRSC 7870S) and Approaches to Community Engagement (GRSC 7970S), by
providing students with the philosophy, best practices, and methodologies
commonly used in community-engaged research. This new option supports the
Graduate Portfolio in Community Engagement and broadens the offerings
needed to design a Certificate in Community Engagement.
Students apply their learning in a community-based research project that
benefits a community partner. The course design offers a template that includes
reusable modules and allows interested faculty to modify the methodological
emphasis, as well as insert their preferred project.
Service-Learning Fellow Dr. Walker will pilot the course in 2016-17. Students will
engage in a specific project called Listening to Local Leaders: Telling Their
Stories, learning qualitative methods and using digital storytelling techniques.
The final product of the pilot will be an archive of leadership stories that can
serve communities across the state by including often unheard voices.
