E xhibition
This 11th edition will bring together
some 4.000 brand packaging experts
from around 70 countries, who will meet
over 250 exhibitors, leading suppliers
of materials, converters and injectors
(glass, paper, cardboard, textiles,
plastics, metals); assembly products and
technologies; TTS, decoration, finishing,
accessories; BOV, valves, pumps,
dispensing technologies and applicators;
products and technologies; custom
packers.
Our ongoing concern is for participants
to enjoy the relaxed setting, the userfriendly scale of the exhibition and the
high standard of discussions among
experts, which foster the emergence of
new projects and innovation for a global
cosmetics market due to double in volume
in the next 10 years. Sustainability remains
the main theme of the conference and

Loïc MARCHIN
Président-Fondateur
PYLOTE, France
process industriels existants.
Packaging is and will be increasingly called
upon to fulfil missions for which it was
not initially designed. New generations of
additives make it possible to meet these
needs without changing existing industrial
processes.
Loïc holds a material sciences doctorate
and graduated from Paul Sabatier University
(Toulouse); he is an expert in inorganic
chemistry and industrial developments.
Before founding Pylote, he moderated
the CNRS industrial valorisation unit

L’étiquetage est la première information
que les consommateurs et les autorités
compétentes examinent. Elle suscite donc
une attention toute particulière vis-à-vis
des mentions obligatoires. Le règlement
cosmétique européen 1223/2009 a introduit
certaines de ces mentions mais également
d’autres textes européens (générateurs
aérosols, préemballages, critères communs
pour les allégations, etc.) ainsi que
des dispositions nationales spécifiques
existent et ajoutent des contraintes
supplémentaires. De même, la volonté
grandissante d’une étiquette internationale
unique complique le travail des designers
et des équipes réglementaires. L’objectif de
cette conférence est de présenter au niveau
européen :
les différentes mentions obligatoires
générales
les exigences spécifiques de certaines
catégories de produits (générateurs
d’aérosols, parfums, etc.)
les stratégies et solutions alternatives
afin de minimiser l’impact graphique des
obligations règlementaires
les futures évolutions réglementaires
attendues (allégations « sans »,
allégation « non testé sur les animaux »,
étiquetage des allergènes, etc.)
quelques
différences
entre
les
obligations réglementaires européennes
et canadiennes
À l’aide d’exemples concrets, Maître
Sylvain Martin et Marie-Paule BALLET
distingueront les différentes obligations de
nature :
Légale (code de la consommation),
Réglementaire (règlements européens),
4
Contractuelle (éco-emballages),
Interne à l’entreprise (policy des groupes
internationaux),
Labelling is the first information consumers
and competent authorities inspect, and
it therefore attracts special attention in
terms of mandatory information. The
European cosmetics regulation 1223/2009
introduced a certain amount of mandatory
information, but other European texts
(aerosol
generators,
pre-packaging,
common criteria for allegations, etc.) in
addition to specific national provisions, add
further constraints. Similarly, the growing
desire for a single international labelling
system complicates the work of designers
and regulatory teams. The purpose of this
conference is to present on a European
level:
the general mandatory information
specific requirements for certain
categories
of
product
(aerosol
generators, perfumes, etc.)
alternative strategies and solutions
to minimise the graphic impact of
regulatory obligations
expected regulatory developments in the
future (allegations « -free », allegation
« not tested on animals », labelling of
allergens, etc.)
a few differences between European and
Canadian regulatory obligations
Through concrete examples, Sylvain
Martin and Marie-Paule BALLET will
highlight the various obligations:
Legal (code governing consumption),
Regulatory (European regulations),
Contractual (eco-packaging),
In-house (international company policy),
Professional (ARPP – French advertising
self-regulatory organization).
Edith BON will then take stock of measures
or sanctions in the event of failure to comply
with regulations (Recall, withdrawal, etc.)
and the risks in terms of (legal) liability.
Using
concrete
examples,
Valérie
BERNARD, will illustrate the solutions,
techniques and alternatives commonly
used to meet these requirements, with
a view to a successful design that places
marketing claims in their rightful place.
Marie-Paule graduated as an engineer from
the ECPM and holds a doctorate in Organic
Chemistry from Strasbourg. She worked at
the National Research Agency as scientific
project manager in fundamental research,
before joining Ecomundo in 2012, where she is
in charge of REACH and cosmetics regulatory
project management.
For the past 25 years, Valérie has been
assisting companies with their packaging
and colour strategies in France and abroad,
particularly in Asia. After 4 years with
Desgrippes agency, Valérie left for Japan,
where she worked for Kosé corporation
before setting up her own company,
VALERIE BERNARD DESIGN, in 1991. She
has since acquired considerable expertise in
packaging design for prestigious cosmetics
and perfume brands and intervenes in the
field of colour for numerous other sectors
like household appliances, stationery, food
and eyewear.
Edith is a lawyer at the Paris bar. She received
specialised training in community and
international law at the Sorbonne, in addition
to European policies. She also holds a degree
from Fordham University, in New York, where
she lived and worked for several years. She
then founded her own law firm when she
returned to Paris. She deals mainly with issues
linked to product safety, more specifically in the
field of packaging, labelling and food contact
regulations. She regularly participates in a wide
range of work on these topics, particularly at the
National Packaging Council, where she helps
to draft reference documents on subjects like
ecodesign, product traceability or packaging in
the circular economy. She assists companies in
these areas, both in an advisory capacity and in
the event of legal disputes
Sylvain, a barrister at the Paris appeals
court, mainly works in the area of packaging
and food safety law. His customers include
companies and professional bodies in these
fields. He is a lecturer at ESIReims (École
Supérieure d’Ingénieurs en Emballage et
Conditionnement), where he teaches about
regulations on labelling, food contact,
packaging waste treatment and packaging
intellectual property. He wrote the chapter
Law and Regulations in the book on Packaging
(collection Les Référentiels published by
Dunod) and writes the monthly legal column
in the review, Emballages Magazine. He is
involved in the work of the National Packaging
Council.

« La veille brevet peut parfois être
considérée comme une attitude passive

Il n’en est rien ! Bien menée, la veille
devient une surveillance, puis une curiosité

tient toute une communauté en compétition

« Patent watch may sometimes be

not at all the case ! Properly conducted,

ME3.3 z Packaging des parfums :
assemblage verre sur verre par
collage / Glass-on-glass gluing
and assembling for perfumery
packaging
Simone BARATTA
R&D Manager
BORMIOLI LUIGI, Italy
Frédéric MONTALI
Marketing Manager
BORMIOLI LUIGI, Italy
The classic blow-blow forming technology
for glass containers has proven to have
reached some of its limits. As customers’
demand for new and innovative shapes
and features is continuously challenging
suppliers to provide disruptive solutions,
Bormioli Luigi has developed internally an
innovative technique to assemble different
parts of glass, strongly, permanently
and with a complete compatibility with
alcoholic fragrances. The final container
can be combined assembling distinct glass
components which in turn can be obtained
from potentially different glass forming
techniques: classic blow-blow and, for
instance, the press-blow process, used in
the Tableware segment at Bormioli Luigi:
very thin walls and no mould seams can
enter the world of glass containers for
perfumery.
Simone holds a Master in Chemistry; in
Bormioli Luigi since 2001 and grown up in
the glass technology area, he is in charge
since 2009 of the R&D department. Strongly
involved in the technical innovation process
in the fields of glass, coatings, decoration and
new initiatives.
Frédéric holds a Master in Physics; in
Bormioli Luigi since 2006, he has worked with
customers on product quality and technical
development in the perfumery market. Since
2013 in charge of the Marketing department of
the glass container division. Strongly involved
in the innovation process on the customers’
side.

Le
Groupe
HEINZ
poursuit
ses
investissements dans les décors tant au
niveau des capacités qu’au niveau des
nouvelles technologies.
The HEINZ Group continues to invest in
the decorations focused onto capacities
and new technologies. To support market
trends in terms of products customization,
the Heinz Group has a new generation of
laser capable of stripping lacquered glass.
We now propose the laser attack on bottles
and jars without the metallization step
execution; it is an offer more economical,
more flexible, and that provides maximum
decoration areas for the realization of
original designs. Finesse sets, access in
hollow or relief, etching targeted 3D and
more ... our innovations at the service of
your creativity.
After six years spent in the Jacques Bogart
Group as Quality manager then Development
manager, Nicolas held the position of
Development manager at Coty Fragrance
luxury (Chartres) from 1998 to 2003. He joined

PCD brings together
a large number of
people. It attracts the
main suppliers and
customers in the sector,
it is highly efficient.
The lectures provide an insight into the
various lines of activity and an opportunity
to think through the action to be carried
out. Secondary packaging is an integral
part of the product, a network of suppliers
and players who need to work together
to optimise the value of these products
in terms of decoration, innovation and
environmental challenges. PCD is an
innovation booster where suppliers can
talk about their activities in a short space
of time. We thus have an opportunity to
prepare the future.

ME4.3 z Protéger l’innovation et
mieux la partager / Protecting
innovation and sharing it better
Nicolas GUEUGNON
Directeur Juridique
INVENTIVA
France
meilleures innovations. C’est dans la
collaboration de haute technicité que les
meilleures inventions seront découvertes
et que vous créerez de la valeur. Plus rien
d’important ne se fait en autarcie. En cas
de contrefaçon aussi, essayez de vous
entendre avec votre contrefacteur, car
les décisions de justice ne sont jamais
gagnantes à long terme. Pour ce faire, la
protection juridique (et un bon juriste pour
négocier) reste indispensable car elle
permet de meilleures innovations...
1/ Yes, it is necessary to keep one’s
innovations secret before sharing them
(non-disclosure agreement) and then
protecting them in order to gain a monopoly
(via a patent, a certificate of utility or a
drawing and model).
2/ It is then necessary to make full use of
the innovation, alone or in partnership. A
powerful innovation will soon be copied. The
answer to counterfeit is generally to use a
lawyer and to sue, or to drop the matter as
it is too complicated or expensive…
3/ Let’s break away from this model and
innovate in the manner of addressing the
problem too ! Try to be more innovative
at the outset and combine forces with the
largest possible number of partners, even
competitors, as this will spawn better
innovations. The best inventions, and the
greatest value, are created through highly
technical collaboration. Nothing important
is done single-handed any more. Even in
the event of counterfeit, try to reach an
agreement with your counterfeiter, as court
decisions never win in the long run. To this
end, legal protection (and a good jurist for
negotiations) remains indispensible as it
provides for better innovations…

ME4.4 z La Conception Inventive :
une démarche de systématisation
de l’invention dans l’ère de
l’Innovation / Inventive Design :
systematising invention in the era
of innovation
Pr Denis CAVALLUCCI
INSA, Université de Strasbourg
France
While we could hope in the past that
brainstorming would enlighten researchers
and engineers in search of new ideas, the
advent of the Internet and the increasing
complexity of the world today have made
invention (when solely based on creativity)
far less efficient. Yet the watchword for
most companies is « Innovation »; over
and beyond words, some research seeks
to systematise the effects through method.
This presentation will describe and discuss
two key questions :
Is there another way of driving invention
in industrial R&D apart from the
conventional model of « creativity
sessions » ?
What is the potential contribution of
Inventive Design in this context ?

JEW z Conduite d’un processus
d’invention par l’exemple / Driving
a process of invention by example
Pr Denis CAVALLUCCI
INSA, Université de Strasbourg,
France
Invention characterises the tangible or
intangible materialisation of the fruit of
an inventor’s mind (or that of a group).
Compared with innovation, it is not implicitly
expected to have proved its profitability on a
given market. It can therefore (somewhat)
more freely represent a disruptive change
without there being too many questions
that nip it in the bud.
But can one wake up at 6am on a Monday
and say « today, I am going to invent ! » ?
This presupposes there is a planned
process of invention that guarantees the
deliverables. Such a process does not exist.
However, there is a theory of invention that
comes close to it : TRIZ
While somewhat confused in the first ways
it was disseminated in the early 2000s,
this theory has since been studied and its
methodological spin-off has been tested in
numerous industrial, academic, scientific
and advisory settings.
1. Analyse the initial situation
2. Formulate the inventive problem
3. Use resolution techniques provided by
TRIZ
4. Build by interpreting the inventive
solution concepts
The aim of this workshop, through a simple
exercise, is to give participants a clear
vision of the MCI-TRIZ process and its
functioning, to illustrate the latter through
an example and fun-learn the participants
through each stage.

JE1.3 z Moins, c’est plus – relever
le défi de l’étiquetage de demain
avec les films MDO / Less is More
– Meeting the Challenge of
tomorrows Labeling with MDO films
Päivi Knihti
Business Segment Manager
Personal Care Labelling,
Film and Special Business
EMEA, UPM Raflatac
Labelling industry, especially pressure
sensitive labelling, has reached its
crossroads - it is time to make the decision
for the future winner of the down-gauging
and cost cutting, as well as technical
performance, competition. MDO (Machine
Direction Oriented) label film has shown
its superiority against other options.
High machine direction stiffness allows
problem-free high speed dispensing and
conformability in cross direction makes the
labelling of high-curvature bottles and
packages a reality. Naturally, printability
and clarity performance of this film type are
a given excellence. Our MDO film, known as
Raflex Pro, is found to be especially suitable
for personal care, like cosmetics, usage.
Printing houses, as well as end-users, can
enjoy also other benefits, like gaining more
labels on a reel and finally, by using UPM
Raflatac’s proprietary RafCycle concept,
can take their sustainability programmes
to next level as well.

Secondary
(paperboard)
cosmetics
packaging typically emphasizes graphical
elements of the package for differentiation
rather than the structure. As an enormous
effort is expended by perfume and
cosmetics manufacturers to come up with
new and unique primary packages, are there
opportunities to strengthen and differentiate
brands through innovative secondary
packaging as well? Innovative paperboard
packaging can be effectively utilized to
answer these questions and more in our
upcoming presentation.
Metsä Board has pioneered lightweighting achieving excellent strength and printability
at low basis weights. Based on fresh
forest fibres, a strong tradition of R&D,
breakthroughs in BCTMP and state-of-theart mill technology, the development of everlighter boards continues. Metsä Board’s
lightweight boards yield significantly more
cartons per tonne and reduce customers’
total costs without compromising quality
and performance. The I-beam effect is our
strength in board production. Stop talking
grammage. Let’s be focus on strength,
thickness and consistency!
Chris is Commercial Director for Beautycare
& Healthcare in Metsä Board’s Cartonboard
business area. He has considerable
expertise and skills in the luxury, beautycare
and healthcare packaging market. Chris
heads a worldwide network that provides
solutions to our customers, including many
leading international converters and brand
owners.
Cyril leads Metsä Board’s Design & Innovation
team in Packaging Services. Using market
data, consumer insights and innovation,
the team creates graphical and structural
solutions that maximise the value of packaging
initiatives for international brand owners.
Cyril believes that packaging design should
communicate sustainability messages, as well
as providing insight-driven benefits to the enduser.

PCD AWARDS
CEREMONY
Thursday 5th February - 14:15 - 15:15 - Room «B»
Chair : Alain BETHUNE, Expert Packaging & Michel DUPUIS, COJEMIAL CONSEILS, FRANCE
The launching of new perfumes, cosmetics and make-up is closely
bound up with packaging innovation. Packaging is in direct contact
with the buyer, a key factor of success!
moment fort.
The technical presentations made by the packaging managers
of brands singled out for a PCD Award will give an overview of
the intelligence, skills, creativity, technologies and knowhow,
collaboration with suppliers and “tricks of the trade” used to
meet marketing requirements while respecting deadlines, quality
constraints, sustainable development strategy and, of course, the
budget! Every year, the PCD Awards ceremony is a special moment.
NEW Candidacy is open to the products sold in the European /
International market between the 1st of January and the
31th of December 2014.
The ADF and PCD trophies are an original sculpture by Fabien HULIN,
a plastic artist whose work is exhibited in France, Europe, Morocco and
North and South America. They are made by DIGITAL PACKAGING and
magnified using a silver spray metallization process that is identical to
the finishing on the famous sculptures by an American figurative artist...
