culture, the southwest coast is
poised on the edge of opportunity.
Historically, the area from
South Branch to Rose Blanche
depended on large industry for
economic generation, specifically forestry, the fishery and
the railway.
Marine Atlantic continues to
be a vital part of the business
fabric of the region, bringing
both employment and opportunity in the form of traffic to the
area.
With Port aux Basques as its
service hub, the southwest
coast and its approximately
9,000 residents are developing
more small business, a growing
tourism sector and looking to
future opportunities in the oil
and gas sector.
“Our communities have
become more resourceful in
looking for ways to sustain
themselves,” said Debbie
Munden, executive director of
the Marine and Mountain Zone
Corporation. “Everyone knows
it’s either do or die.”
The southwest coast faced
massive out-migration and
demoralization after the collapse of the inshore fishery in
the early 1990s. In the subsequent years, the region has
faced an aging and declining
population as young people
moved away in search of
employment.
In more recent times, the
trend has begun to change.
Housing starts are up as
some former residents are moving home to take advantage of
opportunities here and others
are come home to retire.
Many people are now taking
advantage of employment
opportunities that allow them
to work outside the province
for a set amount of time, but
then return to enjoy life on the
southwest coast, according to
Blanford Billard, chair of the
Marine and Mountain Zone
Corporation.
Some young families are also
moving back or staying on the
southwest coast thanks to jobs
with the ferry service, health
care, education or tourism sectors, or at one of many small,

Most small businesses are
service-based and cater to

employer, according to
Candace Matthews, managing
coordinator of the Port aux
Basques and Area Chamber of
Commerce. The chamber continually promotes shopping
locally and encourages the
investment of time and money
into the development of the
local economy.
The southwest coast business community faces several
labour-related challenges, said
Mrs. Matthews. One is the mismatch between available job
and skills in the available workforce, which is being addressed
with the help of several community partners including Port
aux Basques Campus of the
College of the North Atlantic.

ROSE BLANCHE-HARBOUR

Cove were once three separate communities
that are now joined together by proximity. Rose
Blanche and Harbour le Cou operate under a single town council, while Diamond Cove is a local
service district that makes use of some of the
town’s services.
The Rose Blanche Lighthouse is one of the
major tourist attractions on the southwest coast,
drawing roughly 6,000 visitors each year.
Restored in 1999, it is the only granite lighthouse
left standing on the Atlantic seaboard.
Fishing is one of the main industries in the
area. The communities’ populations grow in the
summer as people from other parts of Canada
own about 30 homes as seasonal properties.
The coastal ferry service to La Poile departs
from Rose Blanche on an almost-daily schedule.

The main industry in town is a fish processing
plant, one of the few remaining on the southwest
coast. Many residents of Burnt Islands work seasonal jobs in other parts of Canada.
The Hook and Line Interpretation Center
teaches visitors about the traditional fishery.
Grandy’s River Collegiate is located just outside Burnt Islands. It accepts students from Isle
aux Morts, Burnt Islands and Rose Blanche.

sle aux Morts is a historic fishing community
which was once located on a small island but
was later moved to the main island of
Newfoundland. Isle aux Morts is French for
“Island of the Dead.” It takes its name from the
numerous shipwrecks that took place in the
treacherous waters off the coast.
The story of George Harvey, his daughter Ann
and their Newfoundland dog has been used by
the town as a focal point for tourism. Visitors can
walk the Harvey Trail to see the dangerous coastline and watch the waves breaking. They can also
visit the gravesite of George Harvey, or take part
in Harvey Days celebration each summer.

the town brings close to 400,000 passengers to
Port aux Basques from the mainland each year,
as well as being a major local employer. The
town is also home to the Dr. Charles L. LeGrow
Health Centre, which offers health services to the
region.
The town also boasts a multi-use recreational
facility, the Bruce II Sports Complex, that
includes an arena, curling rink, fitness centre,
bowling alley and swimming pool.

Although not located in the community itself,
J.T. Cheeseman Provincial Park is accessible by a
gravel road or by coastline via a long, sandy
beach.

Anguille, O’Regan’s, Tompkins, Millville and
South Branch.
With the most frost-free days of anywhere in
the province, the valley is known for agriculture
and is also a popular location for summer homes
and cabins.
The Grand Codroy Estuary is recognized as a
wetlands of international importance.
Thousands of migratory birds spend time in the
Grand Codroy River and surrounding area at different times throughout the year.

such opportunities.
The region is not the gateway
in name only, said Mrs.
Matthews, but is strategically
located to take advantage of
many emerging opportunities,
such as transportation and oil
and gas.
“It’s not only an opportunity,
but we also have an obligation
to live up to the province, to be
the province’s first impression,”
she said.
It seems that impression is a
good one for the growing numbers of tourists.
