2 THE ANNUAL ROAR 2005
Richard L Gochnauer,
Class of ‘55 Outstanding
Athletic Achievement
The year, 2003, was marked by the loss
of Dick Gochnauer, longtime manager
of the Muhlenberg A’s American
Legion Baseball Team. Dick led
the A’s for 32 years (1970-2001)
compiling a coaching record achieved
by only a select few individuals at
any level of competition in any sport:
630 wins, 416 losses. His leadership produced
four Berks County Legion Baseball Divisional
Titles, one Berks County Legion Baseball
Championship, nine trips to the State Legion
Baseball Regional Championships, three State
Legion Baseball Tournament Appearances,
one State Legion State Championship and one
Mid-Atlantic Legion regional appearance. Prior
to his career at Muhlenburg, Dick coached
Mechanicsburg Teener Baseball from 1959-1964
and the Temple Youth 13-15 year old baseball
team from 1965-1969.
But far and away his greatest impact was
that which he had on all those around him.
Dick had intensity, a love and a passion for
the game of baseball. He shared that with
everyone he touched. But the lessons he
taught the young men who played for
the Muhlenberg A’s have had, and will
continue to have, a more long-lasting
effect than Dick could ever have imagined.
Dick took coaching personally. Wins and
losses were important. But more important were
the values he demonstrated each and every day.
Work hard. Give it everything you have. Treat
people with respect. That was Dick. He lived his
life focused on what’s right…not who’s right.
During Dick’s career he was honored on
many occasions for his outstanding and selfless
service to the youth of the community. In 1984
he was the recipient of the “Service Above Self
Award” by the Rotary Club; in 1986 he was
inducted into the American Legion Baseball Hall
of Fame; in 1994 received the Chapel of Four
Chaplains Legion of Honor Award; and in 1999
received commendations from Senator Michael
O’Pake, Congressman Tim Holden and State
Representative Dante Santoni for his 30 years
of loyalty and dedication to the Muhlenberg’s A
Baseball Team and had the Muhlenberg School
Board rename its baseball diamond the “Dick
Gochnauer Field”.
Dick was employed by the Muhlenberg School
District. With his wife, Ada, he had two children,
Rick and Robin. There are five grandchildren.
Generations of baseball players in the
Muhlenberg Area owe a debt of gratitude to
this man who diligently worked to ensure that
every one of his players developed their baseball
abilities and realized their full potentials as
human beings.
Henry Fry
Class of ‘55
Achievement In
A Chosen Field
Always a good student and
member of the Torch staff
and Chess Club, Henry
Fry graduated from
Mechanicsburg High
School and went on to
Harvard to continue his
studies. However, when
his father died in 1959 Henry
came home to run the family business, “The
Shoppers Guide”. At that point the business
was located in Dillsburg, but later that year,
he bought the “Daily Local News” from J.A.
Bushman in Mechanicsburg and moved the
businesses together.
In 1973 they outgrew the 5000 sq. ft.
building on West Main Street and bought
land at the west end of Mechanicsburg, near
the football field. Their initial 16,000 sq. ft.
building has multiplied many times and is still
used as the business headquarters. They have
also built and acquired other buildings in the
Mechanicsburg area.
Today his business has over 1,200 employees
and is one of the largest independently owned
printing businesses in the country. The business
specializes in printing magazines and catalogs.
They are highly automated and embrace new
technology at every turn. The business has an
enviable reputation for quality and reliability.
They continue to do a small amount of work for
the federal government, which gave them their
original impetus. The business continues to
publish their original paper, now called
“The Guide News.
”Henry has been married to Betty Louise
Kintz Fry for 41 years. They have three sons,
Greg, Eric and David. Eric is also in the family
business. They have 6 grandchildren, two of
whom are also in the business and two great
grandchildren.
William L. Sunday
Class of ‘42
Achievement In
A Chosen Field
William L. Sunday received
a B.S. in Economics
from the University of
Pennsylvania in 1948.
He graduated from the
Dickinson School of Law
in 1950 and became a
member of the Pennsylvania
Bar Association in 1951. Bill
started practicing law in 1951. He specializes
in municipal law, wills, trusts, estate planning
and taxes.
Bill has been a member of the Cumberland
County Bar Association since 1951 and was
the President in 1977. He was a Cumberland
Following high school
graduation, John Ent
enlisted in the United
States Army Infantry and
was deployed to the Korean
War. He was wounded there
and received the Purple
Heart. In 1970 he was stationed
in Chu Lai, Vietnam and later stationed in
Stuttgart, Germany, working for the US Army
European Command. He retired from service as
Lt. Colonel and later in 1996 retired from the US
Postal Service.
About five years ago, John wondered if there
existed any kind of record of the names of fellow
Mechanicsburg Area High School graduates who
served in World War II. He decided to look into
it and after searching he learned that there
was no such record. For the next three years he
worked tirelessly researching, interviewing and
compiling information for the sole purpose of
creating a lasting record and acknowledgement

of the men and women who attended
Mechanicsburg High School and served in the
armed forces during WWII. The results of his
efforts, is the book he published himself called
“Heroes Among Us”.
On June 6, 2004, John held an event at the
Simpson Public Library in which he invited all of
the people from the book to come and sign each
of five copies to be donated to the Cumberland
County Historical Society, the Mechanicsburg
Museum Association, the Mechanicsburg Area
School District, the Simpson Public Library and
the Army War College in Carlisle.
John’s hobbies include traveling with his
wife of 56 years, Mary Jane Rider Ent, ‘49,
reading, WWII history, woodworking and home
improvement projects. John has two daughters,
Deborah Ent Hoffman, ’67, and Melanie Ent
Fisher, ’78. He has four grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
John Ent’s book, “Heroes Among Us” is
evidence of his loyalty to our alumni with the
stories of the men and women who attended
Mechanicsburg High School and served our
country in WWII. Knowing the sacrifices these
men and women made, his book will live on for
generations and make us proud to be part of
Mechanicsburg High School’s history.

PLANNING A CLASS REUNION???
The Association receives updates on alumni on a regular basis. These updates
are gathered from this mailing, the grads themselves and from friends and
relatives. If you are planning a reunion, please contact the Alumni Association
as you begin your plans. We will provide the most current list of your class
members, including their addresses and phone numbers. If you will be mailing
to more than 200 people we will be happy to help you with the bulk mailing
information and bulk mail permit usage. Bulk mailing can save you money
on postage costs!

ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP
FUND AWARDS
The Mechanicsburg Area High School Alumni Association
Scholarship Fund was established in 1980 under the direction
of Mabel M. Vogelsong. Initially the Fund began with local
solicitations resulting in $10,000 and has grown to over
$211,000 with donations from Mechanicsburg graduates
throughout the country.
The funding of the scholarships is based upon interest
earned by the Fund. As the Fund has grown the Alumni
Association has been able to increase the number of
recipients and the size of the award.

T
he 4th Annual Winter Gala of
The Wildcat Foundation was
held February 25th at the
West Shore Country Club. One of the
highlights of Winter Gala is the
announcement and presentation of
“The Student Choice Awards” recognizing three district employees.
This is the second year that these awards have
been presented. The nominations for “The Student Choice Awards” are based on essays submitted by individual students written on behalf
of a current or past Mechanicsburg Area School
District staff member who has made a significant
impact on their lives. A committee of Wildcat
Foundation Board members, administrators, and
teachers selects one essay from each level, elementary, middle, and high school.
The three winning student essays were
read aloud by each of its authors. Ben Derk,
5th grade student from Upper Allen Elementary
School, commented in his essay that on the first
day of school his teacher, Bradford Wolfe made
him feel like “me, not them” and that he went

T
he Mechanicsburg Wildcats Summer Buddy
Program is a new program, designed to
recruit graduates to serve as mentors for
sixth and seventh grade students who are having
difficulty adjusting to the transition from the
elementary to secondary grades.
Mentors and buddies met four times a week
and participate in activities encouraging one-onone and group interaction, social skills, problem
solving ability and perseverance. Activities
included community service projects along with
field trips to museums and the capital.
In 2004 this program was under the
supervision of Amy Albert, high school teacher.
Her proudest moment was watching the
confidence of the eight youths grow daily.
The goal of the program was to improve selfesteem and decision making among the Middle
School students who finish the six-week program.
This new program, one of many, was funded
by the Wildcat Foundation and MASD.

Thanks to:
• Our dues paying members, despite last
year’s 100% raise
• Our Administrative Fund contributors
• and a substantial memorial bequest to the
Scholarship Fund the Alumni Association has a much
healthier picture for the future!!! Special thanks to
each of you! We encourage everyone to join your
fellow Mechanicsburg Area High School Alumni.
Add your name to list of supporters from your class!
We need you and you need to thank MASH for your
education.
We know that a number of alumni have mentioned
the Association in their wills! Talk to your attorney if
you have questions about doing this. What better way
to say thank you to the institution that gave you a fine
educational start in life and laid the foundation for your
success!
In September be looking for information from
Harris Publishing. They have begun to work on the
next issue of the Alumni Directory. We hope that
you will supply the information they request and will
consider purchasing a copy. It is a wonderful way to find
information regarding your friends from high school –
where they are, what they are doing and how to
reach them!
Our very special thanks to Deb Bates Schrott for her
dedication to the Association and the design work for
the Newsletter! It looks great!
OUR MAILING COSTS HAVE INCREASED CONSIDERABLY!
PLEASE CONSIDER A GENEROUS CONTRIBUTION TO THE ADMINISTRATIVE FUND!!!
