Hats off to Our Convention Crew!!
Our Michigan AAUW Convention, held on April 30, was a huge
success, due in part to our members. Many of our Birmingham
Branch women stepped up to help in various capacities. They
helped as greeters, with registration, with meals, hospitality, technology, and
other activities on both Friday and Saturday.
The convention, along with the Feet on the Street Tour and Chico’s and Soma

enjoyed by all. We received many positive comments from attendees from

PRESIDENT’S CORNER
It is always a pleasure to watch the
ducks placidly gliding across our lake, taking in
the scenery and pausing to commune with each
other from time to time. Yet, as we all know,
their little webbed feet are paddling furiously
below the water to keep them afloat and moving
forward.
Those ducks remind me of our recent
state convention, where everything went smoothly, and we all had a
chance to enjoy the activities, as well as spend time with each other.
You may not have realized how fast so many people were paddling to
make everything look so calm. I would like to thank the many members
who worked hard to make the convention a success, who included the

IMPORTANT: DIRECTIONS TO
SORTING - SUMMER 2016
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE BOARD MEETING
Wednesday, May 11, 2016


We are sorting this summer at the
Bloomfield High School Dublin
Building and sharing space with
Bloomfield Youth Services.
THE DIRECTIONS FOR SORTERS:
The site is behind the Physical Plant office across
from the new BHS high school on Andover Road.
Take Andover Road to the parking lot for Staff and
Visitors and Parking Lot C. If you are coming south
on Andover (which means you have accessed
Andover from Long Lake), the parking lot is just
before the Physical Plant; if you are coming north
on Andover (which means you have accessed
Andover from Telegraph), then the parking lot is just
after the Physical Plant. Either way, the parking lot
is east of the new high school. Drive to the very
back of that lot which is Parking Lot C to park. You’ll
have to cut across a small patch of grass to get to
the sorting site. We’ll eventually wear a path that
you can find easily. PLEASE DO NOT PARK
ANYWHERE ELSE FOR SORTING.
If you are a barrel picker or delivering home
pickups: Take Andover Road to Dublin Drive on
the east side of Andover Road; you can only turn
east on Dublin Drive. Follow it around to the Dublin
Building and pull in to the semi-circle drive in front to
unload. We will NOT be parking in that drive
except to unload.
It shouldn’t take long for us to get into our summer
routine, but if you run into problems, call Pam
Hoffman, 248-770-8476 or Carol Pyke, 248-2256698, and we’ll talk you in.

The 90th annual Birmingham
Branch Used Book Sale
begins soon.
Think of it! In 1926 twenty-some women
held the first sale to raise money for scholarships for
high school girls. Here we are 90 years later doing the
same thing on a scale we only hope they could imagine!
Sorting will begin on June 14 at the Bloomfield Hills
Schools Dublin Building. We’ll sort on Tuesdays/
Thursdays from 9:30—noon until mid-August. It
primarily involves putting books pre-sorted for condition
and age into 26+ categories. This is a new location with
some logistical issues, so we’ll sort a bit differently this
Carol Pyke, Treasurer year. (see pg. 3 for driving directions.) Dorie Marshall is

Patron Donor Friend Contributor Fund
One of the most gratifying aspects of the book sale is giving up to $100 worth of free
books and materials to teachers in the tri-county area on Saturday from 1:00—5:00. We
offset that potential loss of income to the book sale through the Patron Donor Friend
Contributor (PDF) Fund. While the money we raise from the book sale itself stays
locally, the money from PDF goes to AAUW Funds nationally to support the Eleanor
Roosevelt Fund, Legal Advocacy Fund, Leadership Fund and Public Policy, among
others, and our own Jean Ivison Walker Project and Research Grant.
Last year, 85 branch members contributed almost $11,000 through the PDF to support AAUW Funds
nationally. You should receive a letter in mid-July with more information about PDF. Please contribute
whatever you can to support women all over the country!

Explorathon 2016
Our annual STEM project for young women occurred on March 23 at Cranbrook Kingswood Middle
School for Girls, our third year at that venue. Our 356 enrolled came from Ecorse, Woodhaven, Warren,
Harper Woods, Melvindale, Detroit, Livonia, Wyandotte, Canton, Ferndale, Oak Park, and from our own back
yards, West Bloomfield and Birmingham—and all points in between. We offered twenty workshops in seven
STEM areas and also offered concurrent workshops for the chaperones.
While the weather held and the day went smoothly and we had wonderful feedback from attendees, we
did have one fatality in Workshop 4, “Protecting the Great Lakes from Vampire Fish.” The presenter brought
a lamprey eel which expired sometime early in the workshop day. She was philosophical, noting: “It had
‘been on its last legs’ for quite a while!” And, “It was easier for the girls to handle—not quite so wiggly.”
One great new idea came from committee member Karen Boyk who suggested we have sticky notes and
markers at the lunch tables and tri-fold boards so participants could write their comments about Explorathon.
The comments were poignant,
insightful, helpful and funny. See
related article.
We are so grateful to Cranbrook
Kingswood Middle School for Girls
and the Cranbrook staff who
contributed greatly to the day’s
success. A special thanks to the
Explorathon committee and all our
volunteers who remarked on the
politeness and maturity of our
attendees. It was a most fulfilling
day for all!
Thank you,
Sally Doty, Pam Hoffman
and Chris Salley
Groves and Seaholm High School students who attended
2016 Explorathon
“Heard it at Explorathon”
The chaperone from Melvindale schools wrote a note about one of her students who comes from an
indescribably difficult home life: “Yesterday was very special when [the student] told me she is going to be an
engineer after attending the workshop. That is what Explorathon is all about—creating that spark!” Indeed.
From the lunchroom stickies: “I liked my lunch”; “better food”; “need more time in workshops”; “I learned
that the female pelvis is bigger than the male pelvis”; “neurophsycology is awesome!”; “touch more skulls in
forensic anthropology”; “positive atmosphere”; “I really liked that all women are teaching us. The women are
smart and strong”; “Accounting rocks!” and, “I learned not to give up because it will lead to amazing
opportunities!”
We probably gathered over 400 comments and will try to act on as many as are feasible for Explorathon
next year.
