There’s something about August that always makes me start thinking about that first item listed in our
mission statement – Advocacy.
“ad·vo·ca·cy ˈadvəkəsē/ noun
public support for or recommendation of a particular cause or policy.
synonyms: support for, backing of, promotion of, championing of”
Advocacy is our organization’s work - women working together to take action, to make the world a better
place for women and girls. We have a full slate of work to do this year!

But, before we roll up our sleeves, we can first do a little celebrating how far we’ve come by attending
the Women’s Equality Day program sponsored by the Appleton League of Women Voters. August 26 th
has been designated as Women’s Equality Day to commemorate not only the passage of the 19 th amendment in 1920 granting women the right to vote, but also continuing efforts towards full equality.

Mark your calendars for September 6th when we’ll kickoff our AAUW year with lots of info and opportunities to get involved in this fall’s advocacy efforts as well as our educational and fun interest groups.
Our next important date to get on the calendar is September 13th when AAUW, the League of Women
Voters, and Fox Cities Advocates for Public Education will be co-sponsoring Dr. Julie Mead, a professor
in the Department of Educational Leadership & Policy Analysis at UW-Madison, to speak about Public
Education in Wisconsin. The program will be at the Appleton Public Library at 7:00 pm.
As we move closer to the presidential election, we will be working to Get Out the Vote! AAUW will be
sponsoring viewings of the movie Iron Jawed Angels and providing voter information and voter registration assistance.
I do want to assure you that we take seriously AAUW’s stance as a non-partisan organization. For more

BOOK SORTING BEGINS!
We will begin meeting in the basement of the Atlas mill on Tuesday morning, August 2.
Book sorting will occur every Tuesday morning from 9-12 and Thursday evening from 6-8
from the first week of August until we move to the Northland Mall on October 11. Please
join us whenever you can for all or part of the morning or evening. If you are new to the
branch and book sorting, we will give you all the information you need to sort books.
On Tuesday, August 2 we will have lunch together at Fratellos after we sort books. Hope
you are able to join us.

The prospective member picnic is August 1. We have had a great response so far,
but we have room for more. If you know of a wonderful lady that would love to add
AAUW to their life please let Jackie Booher or Margie Young know right away and
we will invite them to the picnic.

We are pleased to add LouAnn Graf to the membership committee. We welcome new members to the

We are pleased to announce two new members:
Judy Hohnberger has a BLS from UWO and a MA in counseling from Lakeland College. She is a former
counselor at FVTC. Judy is interested in working at the book sale, travel, STEM, the afternoon literature
group, and assisting with the scholarship committee.
Shirley Phillips has BLS from UWO. She worked for Phillip and Associates. Shirley is interested in working
with the book sale, the afternoon literature group, and the summer mystery book group.

How it works: Each month there is a mystery book to read and an AAUW member-written mystery to solve (if you wish) which leads you to the mystery location of the lunch that month.

Please consider signing up to help with refreshments at the September
AAUW meeting. As has become our custom, we enjoy heavy appetizers
and refreshments at the first meeting to welcome everyone back to a new
year! We are looking for assistance providing a delicious array at this
meeting as well.

AROUND THE WORLD WITH BOOKS
Our 80th Annual Book Sale!
Preparations are underway for our 2016 Book Sale which will be held Oct. 20-23 and Oct. 27-29 at the
Northland Mall. Moving day will be Oct. 11 and the Book Sale work night will be Oct. 13. Please mark
these important dates on your calendar.
How you can help now:
1. Hand out Bookmarks and Flyers requesting books in as many
places as possible. Extras are available downstairs at the Atlas Mill.
2. Help with book pick-up. Call Donna Cook or Stephanie Malaney to volunteer.
When you pick up books, please recycle books which can’t be used for the
sale.
3. Bring books you have collected to the Atlas Mill. When you come in the main
entrance turn right and take the elevator to the basement. In the basement,
take a right and go straight ahead to door #2 storage area which will be on
your right. Stack full boxes of books inside on the left and put partially full
boxes on the cart. The light is on a timer on a pole outside the storage room.
4. Attend summer and fall sortings at the Atlas Mill. They are taking place every
Tuesday morning (9-12) and Thursday evening (6-8) starting the week of
August 2, until we move to the Northland Mall in October. The Atlas Mill
Restaurant is conveniently located on site! On August 2, the first day of
sorting, we plan to have lunch together at Fratellos to celebrate the
official start of the Book Sale season!
5. Collect as many books as possible. This year we have again decided not to
accept donations of books from public libraries, because many of these books
do not sell. Therefore, we need to make an extra effort to get other books.
6. Save empty boxes (especially paper boxes with lids), but please don’t bring
them until we ask.
