The Captain Triumphs, Eli Under Investigation
and Much More at the Meadowlands
By Bill Finley
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ--Captaintreacherous crushed
his foes in the Meadowlands Pace in another superb
performance from the sport's biggest star, but that was far
from the only news on a big night at the Meadowlands. Bee
A Magician set a world record in the
Del Miller, Pet Rock beat a stellar
field in the W illiam Haughton and
Smilin Eli, the morning line favorite
in the Stanley Dancer was scratched
by the judges due to an investigation
into who actually trains the
3-year-old trotter. (See page 3 for
the Smilin Eli story)
All this on a night when Taylor
Swift fans jammed the Meadowlands
complex for her concert at Met Life
Stadium, making getting in and out
of the racetrack a huge headache.

You couldn't come to any other
conclusion after he beat up on his rivals in the Meadowlands
Pace, adding a win in the big event at the East Rutherford
oval to a resume that also includes victory in the North
America Cup.
Perhaps the only knock on him thus far this year was that
he was winning without dominating. He always got to the
wire first, but often by heads and necks. That wasn't the
case last night as he won the Meadowlands Pace by 3 1/4
lengths over Odds On Equuleus in the time of 1:48.1.
"People have doubted him because he never won by a lot
of lengths and had close finishes," said Myron Bell, the
racing manager for the ownership group. "This dispelled all
doubt tonight."
Coming into the race Captaintreacherous had been biding
his time getting to the lead. In the Hempt Final at Pocono he
didn't hit the front until the shadow of the wire. But on this
night Tim Tetrick drove him much more aggressively. Rockin
Amadeus left hard from the 10 post and had the lead
heading into the first turn, but Tetrick pounced.
Captaintreacherous had the lead before the first quarter,
which went in 27.
"I think the horse has always been able to get out of there,
we just never really used him that way," winning trainer Tony
Alagna said. "He always showed he could pace put of there
if he needed to but we've never had to do that this year.
There's always been someone leaving out of there, so we've
always been able to let everybody get settled and move
him when everybody gets settled. But tonight Timmy and I
talked about it ahead of time. W e decided it was our race
to win or lose, so Timmy said we've got to make something
happen. So he took a shot."
Tetrick drove a masterful race. He went just fast enough
that no one was willing to take him on and just slow
enough that he left something in reserve for the stretch.
Captaintreacherous hit the three-quarters in a relatively
comfortable 1:21, and from there there was no catching
him.
"The first quarter I knew I had a lot of horse," Tetrick
said. "W henever my horse sees somebody he'll go. Luckily
tonight, he didn't have to do that. I asked him at the top of
the lane and he took off for me. He's been good all year,
he keeps getting the job done and I'm so happy that he
does."
Sunshine Beach finished third and Captaintreacherous
paid $3.20 to win.
"A lot of times horses throw big races and we see it all
the time where maybe they aren't as good the next time,"
Alagna said. "This horse had every reason to have an off
night after the mile he went at Pocono. Instead, he was

very, very dominant against a nice group of horses. I don't
think there's anything they can criticize him about now.
Somebody will criticize him because he got a bye or for this
or that; there'll always be critics. In my opinion, how can you
criticize the work this horse has done and his resume?"
Many of the top
members of the
3-year-old pacing division
will now be heading to
The Meadows for the
Adios, but
Captaintreacherous will
not be one of them.

year with their prized colt
and are intent on not over racing him. The Captain will now
get a break and will be seen next in the Aug. 17 Battle of
Brandywine at Pocono Downs. His next start after that will
the Cane Pace at Tioga.
"Anybody who knows me or Myron and the way we've
managed this horse, not only are we thinking about the rest
of this year but now we have to consider his 4 year-old year
because of the rule changes," Alagna said. "W e have to take
that into consideration. If he were just racing this year and
not next year we could afford to gofor broke, but we can't."
A look at the rest of the stakes action on the Meadowlands
card:
Yes, the night belonged to Captaintreacherous, but Bee
A Magician was every bit as spectacular winning the Del
Miller.
Arguably the best 3-year-old trotter on the planet, male
or female, she destroyed the competition in the De Miller,
winning by 4 ½ lengths in the world record time of 1:51 for
3-year-old trotting fillies.
W ith Brian Sears taking over for Rick Zeron she was
fourth early, cruised to the front on the backstretch and
won for fun.
"She's razor sharp right now," Sears said. "She does it
so easily. She just gets over the ground. She's a big strong
filly and built just the way you want them to be built."
If the Hambletonian were tomorrow Bee A Magician
would be the favorite, but trainer Nifty Norman again said
there is zero chance his star filly will take on the boys.
Instead, she will go in the Hambletonian Oaks.
"Not with two heats (in the Hambletonian), we just
couldn't do that with her," Norman said. "There are too
many races afterwards. It would be too tough. You don't
want to have something like the Hambletonian overwhelm
you or keep you from doing what is sensible. You have to
think about the horse and what is best for her career and
that's for her to race against her own sex. W e're thinking
about bringing her back as an aged mare and perhaps
even taking her to Europe. We have grand ideas."

That's good news for the males who competed in the
Stanley Dancer as this is a group where no one seems to
want to step to the top. But if things go right for Royalty For
Life he figures to be very dangerous down the road. Then
again, that is a big if.
Royalty For Life's problem is not talent. He has plenty of it.
It's that in all three of his pari-mutuel starts coming into last
night's Stanley Dancer he broke stride. But on this night he
got around the racetrack without making a mistake and won
the Hambletonian prep by a head over Spider Blue Chip.
Things didn't start well for the George Ducharme-trained
colt. Driven by Brian Sears, he got floated five wide on the
first turn after leaving from post nine. From there, Sears
decided to go for the lead and Royalty For Life had it
approaching the half. He was 1 3/4 lengths in front turning
for home, but Spider Blue Chip was coming after him.
Royalty For Life showed some toughness and held on for the
win, crossing the wire in 1:52.
Three horses broke in the race, including third choice
Celebrity Maserati.
"Once he got through the first turn and made the lead I
was relieved," Ducharme said. "Then I hoped he could fight
off the rest of those horses. I'll have some restless nights
from here but that's just the way I am. I believe he'll be ok
and this (the breaking) will be behind him. He needs to do
what we want him to do instead of him doing what he wants
to do."
The W illiam Haughton was up next and featured a tough,
evenly matched group of older pacers. It looks as if this
bunch is so evenly matched they will take turns beating one
another, and on this night it was Pet Rock's turn. He won by
three-quarters of a length over Bolt The Duer in the time of
1:47. Sweet Lou was right there, finishing third and losing by
a mere length. Foiled Again's problems at the Meadowlands
continued as he finished sixth.
Dave Miller was the winning driver.
"At the half I was happy to be back to the front," Miller said.
"I didn't know what to expect from the nine hole. It was more
or less the best trip I could give him."
The first four finishers in the Haughton were all
4-year-olds.
The stakes portion of the card ended with another win from
I Luv The Nitelife, who won the Mistletoe Shalee by a half
length over Charisma Hanover in 1:50. The clear leader of
the 3-year-old filly pacing division it was her fifth straight win,
though it came in workman-like fashion.
“I thought a lot of them had a chance to go by her at the
top of the stretch," said winning driver Tetrick. "But my mare
gutted it out and when she saw them she dug back in and
fought to the wire like she does. She's been excellent."
The star of the New Jersey Sire Stakes races was W estern
Vintage, who won the pace for 2-year-old colts and geldings
in 1:52.2. He is trained by Nancy Johansson and Yannick
Gingras drove the W estern Ideal colt, who went off at 1-9.
He is owned by Perry Soderberg, who usually advises
clients at the sales and moves on. W ith this colt, he has a
future star of his own.
"This is the first time I have owned a good horse myself,"
Soderberg said. "I am so very happy. I kind of just wound
up with him. I looked at horses for my clients and this one
didn't fit their programs, but I felt he had Grand Circuit
potential so I kept my eye on him."
Investigation Leads to Smilin Eli Scratch from
Stanley Dancer
By Bill Finley
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ–Smilin Eli, the morning line
favorite in the Stanley Dancer, was scratched out of last
night’s race as the Meadowlands and has landed on the
judge’s list. The action came after a New Jersey Racing
Commission investigation found
that the colt allegedly spent time at
an unlicensed training center.
The Racing Commission is
alleging that Smilin Eli was at
Dreamland Farm, which is not a

state. There have been persistent
Carl Conte Jr?
rumors that the real trainer of
Smilin Eli is Carl Conte Jr. and not
Deshawn Minor. Conte is based at Dreamland.
“A horse cannot race in a pari-mutuel event unless he is
stabled on the grounds of a licensed facility,”
Meadowlands judge John Tomasello said. “There was an
investigation into this matter by the New Jersey Racing
Commission and that’s why the horse was scratched.”
Cimino did not return phone calls seeking comment, but
HRU was able to reach attorney Howard Taylor, who is
representing Cimino and Minor. Taylor said the horse did
spend a moment at Dreamland, but only because he was
on a van and the person responsible for his care stopped

at Dreamland because she left her cell phone there. Taylor
said Smilin Eli was on his way to another licensed farm when
the van stopped in at Dreamland.
“The horse never left the van,” Taylor said.
Having missed a key prep for the Hambletonian, Smilin Eli
may have problems catching up. Taylor wants to get the
horse off the judges’ list as soon as possible because he
wants an entry to be accepted Monday for a Friday night
race at the Meadowlands that Smilin Eli can use to get back
on track.
“W e at the New Jersey Racing Commission need to be
satisfied and comforatble knowing he is in fact stabled at a
licensed facility,” Tomasello said when asked what it would
take to get Smilin Eli off the judges list. “W e have to know
he’s not under the care or control of anyone who is not
licenced by the racing commission.”
Conte is licensed in other states, including Pennsylvania.
Market Share Sizzles in Qualifier/Maple Leaf Trot
Prep
Market Share, the 2012 Hambletonian winner, looks like
he’s ready to come into next Saturday’s Maple Leaf Trot at
Mohawk in peak form. The son of Revenue S defeated a
stellar group in a qualifier yesterday morning at the
Meadowlands, winning by 5 ½ lengths in 1:50.3. The time
was just 2/5th slower than the fastest race ever for a trotter
on a mile track, a record shared by five horses.
The competition no doubt had something to do with his fast
time as the field included other big names like Uncle Peter,
who was second, and third-place finisher W ishing Stone.
Among the “baby race” winners, a couple of pacers stood
out. Thatsmyopinion, a Somebeachsomewhere colt that sold
for $350,000 at Harrisburg, won by six lengths in 1:53.1.
Brian Sears drove the pacer for trainer Tony Alagna. A race
earlier, trainer Erv Miller unveiled a Jereme’s Jet colt named
Jet Airway, who won by three lengths in 1:53.2. Andy Miller
drove this one.
Update on Buffalo Spill
Hamburg, NY---Tim Bojarski, President Upstate New York
Harness W riters Association, reports, “I was at ECMC last
night to see Jack Flanigen. He checked out okay, and was
sent home. No concussion, no broken bones, nothing but
sore from hitting the track. Jim Mango (C.O.O. Buffalo
Raceway) called me this morning, and told me he talked to
Ray Fisher, who was sent home this Morning. He has a
broken back (2 vertebrae) and a fractured pelvis, but will not
require surgery. He said about 5 weeks off. So as bad as it
looked, it turned out better than what most of us expected.”

Comments on Towers’ “Speed” Column
In regards to the "Five Reasons W hy W e're Seeing A
Speed Show" column by Dean Towers, I have a few
comments. It was mentioned that the sulkies today are
lighter. Not always. W hen Curt W atson's UFO bike
appeared a couple of years ago, it was a lighter bike but
many of the steel sulkies that are much faster than the old
wooden bikes are actually heavier than the wood bikes.
The bikes are faster because of improved aerodynamics
and other factors, which are actually more related to
mathematics than anything. For instance, The Harmer bike
was much faster than its predecessors but it was also the
first off-centered sulky; this means that the horse is
actually racing 6 inches closer to the rail. The UFO is 10
inches off centered. This is a big reason why the times are
faster, the horses are racing a shorter mile. Many people
don't get this because they simply don't understand the
power of engineering.
Male Olympic swimmers now wear larger, full-bodied,
heavier, bathing suits. The Olympic committee admitted
that these suits were responsible for breaking almost every
speed record in the books. This is because the material cut
through the water better.
Someone also said that the tracks are faster. If you
interview veteran drivers you may find that they do not
agree. John Campbell told me that he does not think that
most tracks are much different now than they were when
he first started driving. There may be a few tracks that are
faster but overall I honestly don't feel that the track
surfaces are much different now than they were twenty or
even thirty years ago. The bottom line is, there hasn't been
any sort of dramatic change in the way harness surfaces
are designed in a long, long time.
As for in-breeding and breeding for speed, it's difficult to
gauge. Thoroughbred breeders also breed for speed and
do a lot of in-breeding and the horses are not a bit faster,
only more fragile. Naturally if you ask breeders why the
horses go faster most of them will say it's because of the
breeding.
A couple of things to keep in mind. First of all, the horses
are going faster the past two years than they did in 2011;
this coincides with the move to the UFO and other 10 inch
off set bikes. When the Harmer (first off-set bike) was
introduced about 10 years ago, horses went much faster.
W hen the modified sulky (first steel bike) was introduced in
(continued on next page)

1977, horses went much faster. These changes were not
gradual, they were immediate. I think most people would
agree that if the breed was getting faster it would be gradual.
When the Harmer came out horses went 2 to 3 seconds
faster immediately. The breed didn't improve by 10 to 15
lengths in one day, it was the bike.
Another point made was that the drivers are more
aggressive. W ell, first of all, the drivers react to the bias.
When the sport was in its heyday, using wooden bikes, the
one mile distance was a true route race which was tiring.
Consequently, the drivers tried to save ground. Now the
tracks are speed favoring, so the drivers had to adjust and
move earlier to try and get the lead. This does lead to faster
times. But the races, in general, are not more exciting today,
in fact, they are less exciting. Sure there's more movement
in the first half, but there's less movement in the last half.
Very few races are won from off the pace in today's sport,
and this is not a good thing.
One last point: Dean mentioned that in his opinion horses
like Niatross and Nihilator could pace in 1:46 to 1:47 today. I
agree. The times that speed demons like Adios Butler
(1:54.3-wood bike), Bret Hanover (1:53.3-wood bike),
Nihilator (1:49.3-modified steel bike) and other super horses
went were spectacular. Believe me, you put these horses in
a 10 inch off-centered aerodynamic bike like the UFO and
you'd see eye-popping final times that rival or beat any horse
racing today. If you look at the Youtube video of Nihilator's
1:49.3 world record win over Falcon Seelster, look at how
thick and bulky his sulky is compared to the streamlined
bikes being used today.

Saying Goodbye to a Friend
Dr Roy Sadovsky, DVM passed away at age 69 last week.
He joins other great racetrack veterinarians and longtime
friends who also died over the past few years--Dr Ken
Seeber and Dr Joe DeLeo.
Roy worked more than one profession during his career. A
great horseman and vet---son of the late trainer and ultimate
Damon Runyon character, George Sadovsky. The two
Sadovskys held court in the Catskills ---at Monticello
Raceway, when it was packed with fans and crowds, not the
hotels--during this time frame. Roy picked up on the same
Runyanesque persona as his dad. They both befriended
me---a totally out of place Jewish kid from Manhattan who
decided he wanted to be a trainer/driver. I learned the
insides and outs of being a racetracker from the Sadovskys.
And my good friend Roy was also kind enough to teach me
the intricacies of gambling !
It was one thing to make a wager on our horses but even
greater fun to go on "junkets" with Roy to Las Vegas. These
were the days before Atlantic City got into the world of
casinos. Oh how proud Roy was to tell barn stories after he
and Jimmy B snuck off to Vegas to shoot craps for 24 hours
straight. Roy knew the game better than anyone and was
kind enough to guide this novice. Yup, Dr Roy loved to
gamble. Once AC got up and running Roy turned out to be a
frequent visitor. He would tell stories how the casinos were
kind enough to send limos and helicopters for him.
The beauty of Dr S. was that he never hid from his love
of gaming. Damon Runyon could have written volumes of
short stories about him. Sure, it got him into some trouble
in later life. But this was Roy. No cares in the world. I left
racing in 1980 and started in a world of business. Got a
little lucky but I always attributed my business success to
the work ethic I developed racing in the Catskills and
learning from horseman like the Sadovskys. They taught
me the "real world."
Around 1988 I brought our company salesman to Atlantic
City for a major industry trade show. Luckily, one evening
at the Tropicana Hotel I found Roy at a crap table. Just
great fun with many remembrances of the past. Although I
ended up holding some of his checks by the end of the
night...."just hold them a few weeks, Jimmy B, he said,
they'll clear" But who cared. You can't make up stories
like this.
Dr Roy Sadovsky was a great vet who found and cured
lameness in many of my charges in the '70's. I'll miss him
a lot. I just hope he finds Dr Kenny Seeber up in heaven.
Kenny and I shared many Dr Roy stories when he was the
permanent vet at my good friend George Teague's stable
over the past years. We laughed for hours over the Roy
stories. As I said, true Damon Runyon characters. Rest
in peace good Dr's.

Not Happy With Steve Katz
Reading the letter from Steve Katz – his analogy made me
sick. Sure, Canadian racing will need a fix and by the way
– without the slot $'s it's going to go away

No, You Didn’t Miss Anything
Can anyone explain the thinking behind Yonkers hosting
their Hudson Filly trot two days before hosting the NYSS

Defending Jeff Gural
Mr W eisberg and Mr Dodd,
I am sorry you feel the way you do about the Pace Elim.
The 13 entries in the Pace, IMHO, are a direct reflection on
the sustaining payments. It is much cheaper to keep a colt
or filly eligible to the big races in Ontario (NA Cup, Elegant
image, Good Times, Metro, etc) and they race for more
money.
The three horses who were offered byes and chose to
accept them aren't being "given" anything they haven't
earned. They have shown up at all the dances this year
and have the highest seasonal earnings of all the horses
entered.
Captaintreacherous and Twilight Bonfire used the week
off for some R&R; Wake Up Peter qualified in 1:50 at The
Meadowlands, last quarter in :27. All took the chance of

drawing the 10 hole by not winning the elim and picking their
post. To quote the late Jim Rankin "There are only so many
showers in a bar of soap."
Re: the one elimination rather than two elims with short
fields. Three cheers for Mr Gural and the racing office at The
Meadowlands! Short fields usually have limited betting
opportunities, and are poor races to watch and wager on. I
can't think of many things that are worse/more boring to
watch than a six horse field with five horses making the final.
After watching all that Mr. Gural has done the past two
years or so to keep harness racing at The Meadowlands, I
feel it is a huge insult to imply that only one elim was held to
save "the Meadowlands having to put up an additional
$50,000 purse for a second elimination." After all that he's
invested, I'm sure that an additional $50,000 would be a drop
in the bucket for Mr Gural; besides, in stake races, owners
are primarily racing to get their own money back that they
have all made in the form of stake payments, entry fees and
starting fees.
As far as "W ere they afraid that 'The Immortal Captain T'
wouldn't make it?" It is always a possibility. People who are
involved in horse racing of any kind, as well as racetrack
management and most fans, realize that if you go to the gate
often enough, you W ILL get beat. That's why they run the
race before they write out the purse checks.

Thanks, Gerald
Congratulations on a well written article on the problems in
Ontario racing rather than the nonsense being spewed out
by the horsepeople and greedy track owners who, wrongfully
assumed the government gravy train would never end.
With no slots money all tracks with the exception of
Woodbine and possibly Mohawk would have closed years
ago.
Once again a great article
