Peter MacKinnon
I want to express a very warm welcome to the graduates, families and friends who
join us today. Convocation is the University’s most important ceremony, for it is
here that we celebrate the accomplishments of our students and the contributions
of their loved ones to their success. You should be proud of this day and of the
commitment and sacrifice that it represents.
In this our Centennial year, we at the University of Saskatchewan are especially
proud of our accomplishments over the past 100 years, and it is thanks in large part
to you, our students, who have helped us to achieve our goal of building a worldclass institution of higher learning.
As we celebrate our successes with pride and anticipate our future with excitement,
the University of Saskatchewan is ready to expand on the original vision of our
founders. Our mission now is to engage fully in all we do, to enlighten all we serve,
and to explore all aspects of our world. We hope that you—our graduates—will
carry on this same mission as you engage, enlighten and explore within your own
new life.
We extend to you our very best wishes for the future. We hope that you will stay in
touch with us through our University of Saskatchewan alumni family, and that we
will have the opportunity to welcome you ‘home’ to our campus many times in the

The Chancellor
Vera Pezer
of Psychology. She would later become
Director of Student Counselling, an
Assistant Professor of Psychology and
Assistant Dean, College of Arts and
Science. Under her leadership, student
retention and academic success were
enhanced and the University’s first
offices dedicated to student emergency
financial assistance, disability services
for students, and Aboriginal student
support programs established.
Dr. Pezer has a long association with
the University of Saskatchewan,
earning her undergraduate and
graduate degrees from the University
and serving as the Associate
Vice‑President (Student Affairs and
Services) from 1991 to 2001. Dr. Pezer
first joined the University in 1966 in
Student Counselling Services and as a
part-time instructor in the Department
She has held volunteer and leadership
roles with the Saskatoon Board of
Police Commissioners, Saskatchewan
Centennial Gala, Hope Cancer Race
for Recovery, Saskatoon Housing
Coalition, and the YWCA. Dr. Pezer
has also contributed widely to
professional and amateur sports
organizations. She was member and
Chair of the 1989 Jeux Canada Games
Foundation, Director of the 1991 Scott
Tournament of Hearts and Ceremonies
Chair of the 1989 Brier. As a Sport
Psychologist, Dr. Pezer served as an

advisor and trainer to Canadian Curling
Teams in two Olympic Games.
An accomplished athlete in her own
right, Dr. Pezer is a four-time Canadian
Ladies’ Curling Champion, a Canadian
Softball Champion, and two-time
member of the Saskatchewan Senior
Women’s golf team. She has received
a place of honour in the Saskatoon
and Saskatchewan Sports Halls of
Fame and in the Canadian Curling
Hall of Fame. In 2003, Dr. Pezer
completed her first book, The Stone
Age: A Social History of Curling in the
Prairies. Dr. Pezer was honoured with
a Saskatchewan Centennial Medal
in 2006, and in 2002, received the
University of Saskatchewan Alumni
Award of Achievement.
Dr. Pezer was elected Chancellor
July 1, 2007. She presides over
Convocation, confers degrees, chairs
the Senate and is a member of the
Board of Governors.

Convocation is a great opportunity to reflect on our past accomplishments and look
to the future. The leaders and builders of University of Saskatchewan had great vision
and expectations for the U of S. I think that you would agree that our University has
emerged as a great Canadian university and, in areas of academic preeminence, we
are recognized as world leaders. The University of Saskatchewan is a place where
great minds meet.
As the graduates receive their degrees today, they join a larger community of over
120,000 U of S alumni worldwide. For more than 100 years, our graduates have
become leaders in their chosen professions and enhanced the profile and reputation
of the University of Saskatchewan. This responsibility has been passed to you to
become our new leaders and innovators. Create a legacy that future U of S students
and alumni can celebrate over the next century. And don’t forget to stay connected

Population
In 1907, the year the University of
Saskatchewan was established, the
population of Saskatoon was roughly
4,500 and the province of Saskatchewan,
210,000.
Saskatoon’s population today tops 200,000;
Saskatchewan’s grazes the million mark.
Students/Faculty
In 1909, five faculty members taught the
first group of 70 students. Classes were
initially held in the Drinkle building in
downtown Saskatoon.
Currently more than 1,000 faculty members
mentor a student body of nearly 20,000.

Colleges
Arts & Science and Agriculture were the
first two colleges to be established at the
U of S—in 1908 and 1909, respectively.
Today, 13 colleges and four schools offer
58 degrees, diplomas and certificates in
over 100 areas of study.
Tuition
In 1909, tuition fees were $6 per class.
Today the cost ranges from approximately
$800 to $1,400 per class.

graduating class of seven students. The
ceremony was held at Nutana Collegiate.
At this year’s Convocation spring and fall
ceremonies, we will honour nearly 4,000
new graduates.

established by the University
Act on April 3, 1907, only 18 months
after Saskatchewan became a
province.
The people of the province, as well as
their government, were instrumental
in shaping the new University. The
provincial government requested
all residents who were graduates
of a Canadian or British university
to form the first Convocation and
elect the University’s Senate. In
1908, the Board selected Professor

embarked on an ambitious effort to advance
its already significant contribution of
knowledge, innovation and leadership to the
people and economy of this province, this
country and the world.
Our plan commits energy and resources where
they count the most—to enhancing the student
experience, to encouraging collaboration and
to supporting research, scholarly and artistic
endeavour.
Success will require that University of
Saskatchewan students be well prepared to
thrive in the ‘knowledge age,’ that they be
equipped to succeed. In the coming years,
the University will explore improvement and
innovation both inside the classroom and out,
all the while ensuring the campus remains
a welcoming place for Aboriginal students,
students from other parts of Canada and those
from nations around the world.
The future will also see the University establish
across the institution a culture of research
and scholarship that attracts top faculty and
students. Supporting this move are world-class
facilities that are already in place, like the
Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization
(VIDO), or are under construction, such as
the $251-million Academic Health Sciences
project. These and other facilities will play
a role in shining the light on current and
emerging areas of excellence.
In keeping with our founders’ early vision,
the University of Saskatchewan will continue
to be a model of innovation, excellence,
diversity and leadership throughout the
post‑secondary education sector, and beyond.

he word “Convocation” arises from
the Latin “cum” meaning “together,”
and “vocare” meaning “to call.” Our
Convocation ceremony is a calling together of the
new graduates of the University of Saskatchewan,
symbolizing the historical practice of calling
together all former graduates. In current times,
the major functions of Convocation are the
election of representatives to University governing
bodies and the admission of candidates to degrees.
The Chancellor, elected by Convocation as its
Chair, is the highest official and spokesperson of
the University.
The Convocation ceremony marks the transition
from the role of student to the holder of a degree
with its accompanying rights and privileges.
The ceremony, solemnized in the presence of the
University community and family and friends
of the graduands, consists of three parts: a
procession marking the leaving of the old status
and entering the new; the President’s statement
to the graduands, the Secretary’s petition and the
Chancellor’s consent for their admission; followed
by individual presentation by their Dean and
admission by the Chancellor to the degrees to
which they are entitled. As graduates are admitted
to their degrees, a graduation hood, which has a
colour symbolizing a particular degree, is placed
over each graduate’s head.

The Lieutenant Governor. When
the members of Convocation reach
their places they remain standing
during the Vice-Regal Salute,
the singing of O Canada and the
Invocation.
The University Secretary on behalf
of all the Candidates, addresses
the Chancellor and Senate in these
words:
Order of the Ceremony
“By virtue of the authority vested
in me by the Legislature of this
Province, and with the consent of
the Council of this University, I
consent to admit you to the degrees
and certificates to which you are
entitled and to invest you with all
the powers, rights and privileges
pertaining thereto.”
The first business is the Conferring
of Honorary Degrees, followed by
Convocation Address, President’s
Statement to the Graduands,
the Conferring of Degrees and
the Presentation of Awards. The
meeting is closed by the Chancellor
rising and asking the audience to
join in the singing of God Save the
Queen and leading the procession
in the reverse order out of the hall.

The ceremony comprises the Petition,
the
Admission, and the Presentation.
“Eminent Chancellor, President, I
present to you the petition that the
candidates to be named, having
fulfilled all the requirements of the
statutes, may be admitted to the
degrees and certificates to which
they are entitled”.

The Chancellor then addresses the
candidates in these words:

The Dean of the Faculty, or
designate, followed by the
candidates of that Faculty,
approaches the Chancellor from
the left and presents the candidates

“Eminent Chancellor, on behalf of
the Faculty of ______, I present to
you these Scholars and ask that you
will confer on them the degree of
______ .”
As the Dean speaks the candidate’s
name in full, the candidate moves
forward in front of the Chancellor.
Then the Chancellor says, “I admit
you” and the University Secretary or
the Registrar places the hood over
the candidate’s head. Hereupon the
candidate passes to the Chancellor’s
right, is greeted by the President,
and receives the degree parchment.
Degrees in Absentia
In such cases, the University
Secretary says:
“Eminent Chancellor, in the name of
the Faculties, I ask you to grant the
degrees and certificates, in absentia,
to those students whose names
appear in the printed program and
who were not able to be present
today.”
The Chancellor replies:
“At the request of the Faculties
I authorize these degrees and
certificates to be granted.
”
The Convocation Ceremony
Academic Costumes
Academic costume lends an element of
colourful pageantry to the Convocation
proceedings. This traditional clothing—
worn on a daily basis at universities in
earlier times—is now more commonly
reserved for ceremonial functions.
At the University of Saskatchewan,
the following academic costume
is adopted to be worn upon all
appropriate occasions:
The gown resembles a long cape
with full sleeve cut to elbow and
terminating in a point for the
Bachelor’s degree; with long sleeve
and a semi-circular cut at the bottom
for the Master’s degree; and with round
open sleeves for the Doctor’s degree.
The material is black for the Bachelor’s
degree, and black material or silk for
the Master’s and Doctor’s degrees.
The Doctor’s gown may have a border
down the front on either side of a
color distinctive of the character of the
degree.
The hoods for the Bachelor’s and
Master’s degrees are of black
broadcloth. For the Doctor’s (Ph.D.)
degree the hood is scarlet cloth with a
blue lining. The Master’s and Doctor’s
hoods have a lining and the Bachelor’s
an edging (and in some cases, a lining)
of a color distinctive of the character of
the degree.

Honorary Doctor of Science
Michael Shaw
before becoming Dean of Agricultural
Sciences at the University of British
Columbia. He was subsequently VicePresident (Academic Development)
from 1975 to 1981 and Vice-President
(Academic) and Provost from 1981 to
1983. From 1983 until his retirement
in 1989, he held the title of University
Professor, an honour only rarely
conferred upon the most distinguished
faculty members.
Dr. Michael Shaw, Professor Emeritus
of the University of British Columbia,
is a distinguished plant physiologist
who enjoys an international reputation
for his authoritative research on the
physiology and biochemistry of hostparasite relationships. In particular, he
has directed his efforts to the cell and
molecular biology of this interaction in
rust fungi, obligate parasites that infect
several economically important crop
plants.
Born in Barbados, Dr. Shaw obtained
his Ph.D. from McGill University in
1949, and joined the Department
of Biology of the University of
Saskatchewan in 1950, serving as
Department Head from 1961 to 1967,
Dr. Shaw has played a significant
role in the development of science
in Canada. He has served on many
committees of the National Research
Council of Canada and Agriculture
Canada and was a founding
member of the Natural Sciences
and Engineering Research Council
of Canada. He has been President
of the Canadian Society of Plant
Physiologists, the Canadian Botanical
Association and the Biological Council
of Canada. From 1964 to 1979, he
was Editor of the Canadian Journal of
Botany.
Dr. Shaw has received many honours
in recognition of the importance of his
scientific contributions. He is a Fellow
of the Royal Society of Canada and
was awarded the Society's Flavelle
Medal in 1976. He has received
the Gold Medal of the Canadian

Society of Plant Physiologists and the
first Gold Medal of the Biological
Council of Canada. He has been
elected a Fellow of the Canadian
Phytopathological Society, the
American Phytopathological Society,
the New York Academy of Sciences
and the Linnean Society of London.
McGill University in 1975 and the
University of British Columbia in
2003 have awarded him honorary
doctorates.
Dr. Shaw's outstanding career in
teaching, research, administration and
public service in itself merits the award
of an honorary degree. However, it
is his particular contribution to the
University of Saskatchewan during a
period of seventeen years that makes
the award by this University entirely
appropriate. He began his pioneering
host-parasite studies during that period
and carried them to an advanced
level of achievement, bringing
international acclaim to the University,
and his leadership guided the
Department during its period of most
vigorous growth and established the
foundation upon which its subsequent
development has rested.
Dr. Shaw met his wife, the former Jean
Berkinshaw, while they were both at
McGill. They have four children.

of Gennum Corp. and CEO when he
retired in 2000.
From 1968 to 1994, Dr. Barber was
a part-time Engineering Physics
Professor at McMaster University and
appointed Distinguished Professor-inResidence in 2001. Dr. Barber speaks
frequently on business, technology,
learning, innovation and economic
development and has authored
many refereed papers and filed
several patents. He has been said to
“epitomize the modern engineering
entrepreneur.”
H. Douglas Barber was born on a
Saskatchewan farm and attended the
University of Saskatchewan obtaining
his B.Sc. with Great Distinction,
winning the Governor General's Gold
Medal, and attaining an M.Sc. in
Electrical Engineering. As an Athlone
Fellow and NATO Scholar he received
his Ph.D. from Imperial College,
University of London in 1965.
Dr. Barber began employment in 1965
in a new microelectronics initiative at
Canadian Westinghouse, Hamilton,
Ontario. In 1973 he was one of the
founders of Linear Technology Inc.,
now known as Gennum Corporation,
a company which has become a world
leader in hearing aid microcircuitry
and high-end broadcast video
products. Dr. Barber was President
Dr. Barber’s honors include the APEO
Engineering Medal, the University
of Saskatchewan C.J. Mackenzie
Distinguished Graduate Award, the
Professional Engineers of Ontario Gold
Medal, and Engineer of the Year Award
of the Hamilton Engineering Institute.
Dr. Barber has received an Honorary
Doctorate of Engineering from the
University of Waterloo, an Honorary
Doctorate of Science from McMaster
University, and in 1999 was named
Ontario’s Technology Entrepreneur
of the Year, receiving the National
Citation for Innovation & Technology.
In 2006 Dr. Barber was appointed as
an Officer of the Order of Canada.
Dr. Barber was also a Director
of the Strategic Microelectronics
Consortium, the Canadian Advanced
Technology Association, the Hearing

Industries Association and the Alberta
Microelectronics Corp, among
others. As a member of the Sectoral
Skills Council, the Natural Sciences
and Engineering Research Council
of Canada, the National Innovation
Strategy, the Ontario Postsecondary
Education Quality Assessment Board
and Vice Chair of the Ontario Science
and Innovation Council, Dr. Barber
has demonstrated his long-standing
commitment to promote innovative
technology and university-industry
linkages.
At McMaster University, Dr. Barber is
past Chair and a continuing member
of the Board of Governors, member
of the Directors College and a past
member of the Senate. He is Chair
of the Engineering Dean’s Advisory
Board. He was a member of the
Conference Board of Canada Leader’s
Roundtable on Commercialization
and of the Ontario Ministry of
Economic Development and Trade’s
Commercialization Advisory Council.
He is a member of the Board of the
Institute of Quantum Computing and a
member of the Ontario Research and
Innovation Council.
Dr. Barber and his wife, June, have
raised a family of four whose families
now include nine grandchildren. He
is a man of faith with over 35 years of
active involvement in their church.
JAMES (JIM) EDGAR TILL
Cancer Institute in Toronto. They both
were also founding members of the
Department of Medical Biophysics at
the University of Toronto, where Jim
has had a long and fruitful research
career.
Jim Till was born at Lloydminster, on
the Saskatchewan side of the AlbertaSaskatchewan border, and received his
early education there. He graduated
from the University of Saskatchewan
with a B.A. in 1952 and a M.A. in
Physics in 1954. He earned his Ph.D.
in Biophysics at Yale in 1957. Upon
graduation from Yale, he returned to
Canada and joined Dr. Harold Johns,
the developer of the "Cobalt Bomb",
as a founding member of the scientific
staff of the newly-built Ontario
Shortly after joining the Ontario
Cancer Institute, he started
collaborating with Dr. Ernest
McCulloch. This led to their
pioneering work defining the hallmark
properties of stem cells, including
their capacity for self-renewal and
pluripotency. This seminal discovery
was the first evidence for the existence
of stem cells, which are currently of
great interest because of their potential
for use in the treatment of a wide
variety of medical disorders. The work
of Till and McCulloch also formed
the basis of bone marrow stem cell
transplants, now widely used in the
treatment of patients with leukemia
and other blood disorders. Not only
has their work stood the test of time,
it still forms the basis for much of
the work currently being done in the
rapidly expanding area of stem cell
research.

Dr. Till carried out research ranging
from work on hematological stem cells
to membrane biology and somatic cell
genetics. He subsequently developed
an interest in studies on the quality of
life issues of cancer patients. This has
led to his current advocacy in support
of more open online access to the
peer-reviewed research literature, for
everyone for whom it's not currently
freely accessible, including patients.
In contrast to many classical academic
researchers, he has used his basic
knowledge and training and applied it
to a wide range of different problems.
The fact that he has made major
contributions to many of these areas
illustrates his ability to view problems
from a unique perspective.
In 2005 Dr. Till was recognized by
the Lasker Foundation with the award
of the prestigious 2005 Lasker Award
for Basic Medical Research. This
award is one of many, which include
being made an Officer of the Order
of Canada (1994), induction into
the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame
(2004), and being a recipient of the
Gairdner Foundation International
Award (1969).
Distinguished Researcher Award
Wei Xiao
on years of ground-breaking research.
For instance, Xiao discovered a pair
of closely related genes called Beauty
and Beast that may govern cancer
development. Uncovering Beauty and
Beast was later declared a “Milestone
in Canadian Health Research” by the
Canadian Institutes of Health Research
(CIHR).
The Distinguished Researcher Award
recognizes a faculty member’s
contribution to scholarship through
creation, expansion, and critique of
knowledge. Wei Xiao, department
head and professor of microbiology
and immunology, is the Spring 2008
award recipient.
Professor Xiao is a significant
contributor to the fields of DNA repair
and cancer research. Colleagues from
across the globe have described the
microbiologist’s work as pioneering,
seminal, and at the forefront of a new
wave of DNA repair research.
Xiao’s research has already garnered a
National Cancer Institute of Canada’s
(NCIC) Research Scientist Award and
a spot on the Canadian Who’s Who
list since 1996. This praise is founded
Xiao is also known for contributing to
finding NEMO, a tiny protein that he
once described as, “an essential link
in the chain of events resulting in the
cells’ efforts to defend the vast ocean
of the human body against invaders
such as viral and bacterial infections.”
Finding this immune response switch
secured a place in a 2004 issue of the
renowned journal Nature.
More recently, Xiao published a paper
in the prestigious research journal
Cell identifying a 9-1-1 signalling
complex that cells can use to initiate
an SOS response in their fight against
carcinogens.
Fellow researchers in the field have
already lauded this breakthrough,
indicating they have awaited it for
over 20 years. It is no surprise, then,
that this summer Xiao will share his
discovery at the prominent Gordon
Research Conference on Mutagenesis
at Oxford University.
Throughout his career, Xiao has joined
with researchers from across Canada,

the United States, France, China,
Australia, and Japan to author more
than 70 articles in peer-reviewed
journals. His collaborative work has
appeared in notable publications such
as Cell, Nature, Nature Structural and
Molecular Biology, Journal of Cell
Biology and Plant Cell.
Xiao has also contributed to the
scientific community by serving on
grant review committees for NCIC,
CIHR, and the International Union
Against Cancer.
He began this remarkable research
career by earning a B.Sc. from
Nanjing Agricultural University in
China, a M.Sc. from the University
of Toronto, and a Ph.D. from
the University of Saskatchewan.
Following his Ph.D., he served
as a research fellow at Harvard
University’s School of Public Health.
Xiao has helped young scholars
find similar academic success by
supervising 19 post-graduate theses
and a number of postdoctoral fellows.
As both a researcher and teaching
professor, he has also guided many
undergraduates toward research
careers, including more than 25
summer students. His expert guidance
was recognized by these same
students when the College of Medicine
Graduate Student Society gave him the
Supervisor of the Year Award in 2007.
Master Teacher Award
Baljit Singh
Professor Baljit Singh is a most
deserving recipient of the Master
Teacher Award at the University of
Saskatchewan. During a relatively
short period of time, Dr. Singh has
achieved high acclaim related to
teaching which is unparalleled. Many
faculty require decades to develop
and demonstrate leadership and
excellence in teaching. In addition to
numerous teaching awards including
the Norden Distinguished Professor
Award (2003), he has also been
recognized internationally for his
excellence in research and graduate
student training. Dr. Singh clearly
exemplifies the “Teacher – Scholar”
model promoted by the University
in a passionate, unselfish and
enthusiastic manner.
Dr. Singh provides lectures in
the subject area of anatomy. This
fundamentally important discipline
may lack the glamour and excitement
of many clinically oriented courses,
but Baljit has the unique ability
to raise the profile of the subject
material. His lectures have been
described on repeated occasions as
dynamic, full of enthusiasm, well
organized, innovative, fantastic and
challenging. He is totally concerned
that students learn and understand.
One colleague states, “he emphasizes
understanding of concepts more than
rote memorization and develops
students’ life long learning skills.”
One student wrote that “Dr. Singh has
the elusive ability to explain complex
pathophysiological processes in a
simple straightforward manner.”
Outside the classroom, Dr. Baljit Singh
provided leadership and mentorship to
many students through his involvement
in the “Faculty-in-Residence” program,
which is now a nationally and
internationally recognized student
support program. Through this program
University students, mostly first-year
students, are provided insightful
guidance and discussion forums on a
variety of topics ranging from political,
social to philosophical themes. One
colleague indicated that “he sees the
students' experience on a holistic level
with academics being important, but

only a segment of the whole.” His
personable style with an infectious
enthusiastic demeanor greatly
encourages student participation.
Dr. Singh has championed many
educational initiatives in recent years.
He enabled the Western College of
Veterinary Medicine to be the first
Canadian university to participate
in the Merek Veterinary Scholars
Program, a summer research and
learning experience. He provided
leadership in the Department of
Veterinary Biomedical Sciences during
the recent curriculum review. He led
and coordinated the development of
an innovative “Biomedical Rounds”
for first year students which integrated
concepts from the basic sciences
of anatomy, histology, embryology,
physiology and biochemistry.
Internationally, he has provided
leadership in teaching of anatomical
sciences as President of the American
Association of Veterinary Anatomists.
Baljit Singh is distinctly a gifted
teacher. His personable and
enthusiastic style has inspired
many students from a diversity of
perspectives. The impact of his
teaching will influence the pathways
of both students and colleagues for
many years. He leads by example, not
only academically, but also in every
aspect of daily life.
Award for Distinction in Outreach and Engagement
Dr. Henry Classen
Dr. Henry Classen's contributions
to outreach and engagement were
evident from his first days as a new
faculty member nearly 30 years ago.
Since his appointment, Dr. Classen
has demonstrated outstanding and
sustained effort through activities and
programs on poultry management
and nutrition designed to inform
and involve external publics and
partnerships about the core missions of
the University of Saskatchewan.
Dr. Classen is an alumnus of the
University of Saskatchewan and
Professor and Head of the Department
of Animal and Poultry Science
in the College of Agriculture and
Bioresources. His outreach and
engagement accomplishments
include numerous collaborations
across disciplines, work with other
universities and partnerships beyond
the borders of the campus. The
collaborations include working with
engineers, animal species specialists,
pathologists, medical doctors, plant
scientists and physiologists. For
over 25 years, he has developed
relationships with individual
producers, boards and processing
plants through the University Poultry
Extension Service, described as
unique in Canada. He holds eight
patents granted and his involvement
with the University of Saskatchewan
Poultry Centre speaks to his strong
research interests and his commitment
to sustainability and economic
development.
He has served as President of the
Poultry Science Association, an
international scientific association,
and President of the Canadian
Branch of the World's Poultry Science
Association. In 2007, Dr. Classen
was awarded the Poultry Science
Association Fellow. He has received
accolades and awards including the
American Feed Industry Association
Nutrition Research Award in 1993,
the Alberta Poultry Serviceman of the

Year Award in 1994 and was part of a
team that received the Saskatchewan
Award of Innovation in 2005. His
commitment to teaching is evidenced
by a group of graduate students who
wrote in support of Dr. Classen that
he "provides an atmosphere for his
students that is powerful, stimulating
and intellectually based" and the fact
that he has received the College of
Agriculture & Bioresources Professor
of the Year award twice.
The industry has such great respect
for his work that he has been asked
to develop protocols and to conduct
research to address industry-wide
concerns. He has served on award
and scholarship selection committees
and a variety of boards and councils.
One supporter wrote that Professor
Classen "epitomizes the very best
of how a university professor can
seamlessly integrate the scholarship
of teaching, learning, discovery,
knowledge translation, outreach,
professional practice, and leadership.
All of his work is characterized
by its interdisciplinary nature and
by the strong connections that are
sustained between the University and
communities and businesses that make
up the poultry industry."
President’s Service Award
Lynn Guina
a single VIP to campus or managing
the logistics of the country’s largest
gathering of academics, Lynn always
sees the big picture while keeping tabs
on the smallest details. It is always
about service.
Special food venues in the Bowl,
University ambassadors and a VIP golf
cart transportation service were just
some of Lynn Guina’s ideas that came
to fruition during Congress 2007 at the
University of Saskatchewan, and just
three examples of the commitment
and dedication to her job that earned
her this year’s President’s Service
Award.
As Director of Hospitality Services
at the University, and throughout
her more than 20 years with the
institution, Lynn has consistently
demonstrated the kind of ‘can do’
attitude that motivates and inspires
others, and brings positive recognition
to the University of Saskatchewan.
Whether she is overseeing the visit of

dynamic and cohesive team to handle
logistics for Congress 2007, Lynn

to problem solving made Congress a
success for both the participants and
the University.
Nominators also talked at length about
her total devotion to meeting the
housing and food needs of northern
Saskatchewan residents evacuated to
campus because of forest fires in 2006.
Working virtually around the clock,
Lynn demonstrated what the term
"service" means at the University of
Saskatchewan.
Raised on a dairy farm near Radisson,
Lynn was involved in 4-H and a
number of high school activities
before she moved to Saskatoon to

study dietetics. She began her career
at the University in Food Services and
has served in a number of capacities,
including acting manager of the
Faculty Club and Conference and
Catering Manager, before taking over
management of Hospitality Services.
In her work, Lynn pays particular
attention to the needs of students.
In partnerships with the Student and
Enrolment Services Division, she
initiated the practice of hiring only
U of S students for summer jobs at
Congress and this year, worked on
a marketing project with third-year
commerce students.
The list of Lynn’s volunteer
commitments at the local, provincial
and national level is long. It includes
membership on organizing committees
for major events like the Special
Olympics, Jeux Canada Summer
Games and the CIS Vanier Cup as well
as the presidency of the Canadian
University and Colleges Conference
Officers Association.
In all that she does, Lynn Guina
maintains the highest possible
standards, and her sense of humour. It
is an approach that has earned her not
only the President’s Service Award but
also the moniker “service hero” of the
University of Saskatchewan.

Gold Medal
Ivan Khalzov
Ivan Khalzov was born in Borisoglebsk,
Russia in 1980. He graduated with a
Master of Science Degree in Applied
Mathematics and Physics from Moscow
Institute of Physics and Technology,
Russia in 2003. In 2004, Ivan started
his Ph.D. research in the Department
of Physics and Engineering Physics at
the University of Saskatchewan. He
was the recipient of the University of
Saskatchewan Graduate Scholarship,
Herzberg Memorial Scholarship and
Rowles Fellowship. Ivan completed his
Doctor of Philosophy degree in 2008.
Ivan’s thesis research is devoted
to the theoretical study of
magnetohydrodynamic flows—the
flows of liquid metals or plasmas in the
presence of a magnetic field.

Danielle grew up in Prince Albert,
Saskatchewan. She graduates with a
Bachelor of Science Honours Degree
with High Honours in Physics. Ms.

awarded to the most distinguished
graduate in the Natural Sciences in the
College of Arts and Science.
Danielle has excelled academically
and has been awarded numerous
scholarships and awards during her
academic career to date, including the
Chancellor’s Scholarship, the Sylvia
Fedoruk Scholarship, the B.W. Currie
Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship
Ms. Anderson has worked in various
science-oriented positions such as
a Science Ambassador in The Pas,
Manitoba and a science outreach
research project with the University
of Saskatchewan. Danielle has also
planned and conducted science
experiments and activities with
Kindergarten to Grade 9 students at
various schools in The Pas, Manitoba.
She has also worked as a Linear

2008 volunteering as a Mathematics
and Science teacher in a vocational
school in Ghana. Other volunteer
