l anned by the CXKJR and CCMGC Presidents, the first driving event
of the year brought out 29 club members on March 22 – with 9
Jaguars, 8 MGs plus the Donatiello Ferrari Testarossa. Led by Jim &
Sue McLagan in their 1980 MGB, the group left the rendezvous point at the
Burnaby Lake Clubhouse and travelled a route prepared by Chris Venning
through Burnaby, into New Westminster and over the Pattullo Bridge into
the City of Surrey. The scenic cruise followed some of the well-travelled
routes during the weekly commute, however on a Sunday these roads are
quiet. Eventually the convoy merged onto King George Highway leading to
a turn onto Crescent Road which skirts the perimeter of the South Surrey
(White Rock) peninsula. The destination: Pelagos Greek Restaurant in
Crescent Beach where the group enjoyed both a delicious lunch and views
overlooking Boundary Bay.

CXKJR/CCMGC has two slalom events each year – the summer slalom in June
and the Heritage Classic Slalom in August. It can be fun for all ages and for all

SLALOM EVENTS COMING SOON
Slalom Master John Morse has
been in charge of the two annual
events for many years. At the
beginning of each event, he
gives pointers on strategy and
walks with the drivers around the
course. At one time, John was a
North American Slalom Champion
in his 1966 Jaguar E-type.

The club’s Summer Slalom June 28 and the Heritage Classic Slalom
August 16 will both take place at a new location at the Boundary Bay
Airport in Delta, accessible off 80th Street, south of Ladner Trunk Road
(Hwy 10). Drivers will need extra time within the airport property to get
to the slalom site and thus should plan on arriving at 9:15 or earlier.
Registration and tech inspections need to be completed by 10:00 when
the event starts with the drivers’ meeting and orientation. Not ready to
take your car out on the course yet? Come out and be a spectator and/
or volunteer to help with tasks such as sweeping the track. For further

Slalom Season is Here!
Our CXKJR club organized the first ever JCNA-sanctioned slalom in 1991.
Jerry Parkhill, along with Jim Brown from the Seattle Jag Club, was responsible for setting
up the JCNA slalom program. Our Jag/MG slalom course is the one used by Jaguar clubs in
the US and Canada, with the original version drawn by Jerry.
Slalom Guidelines by Club Slalom
Master John Morse
Slalom racing, also known as autocrossing, consists
of navigating your Jaguar or MG through a course of
traffic cones set out on a large vacant parking lot with
the objective of completing the course in the least
possible time. Participants run through the course
individually, with the runs timed electronically. The
layout is designed to maximize the opportunities for
testing the capabilities of both driver and car in a
compact area, while ensuring speeds are kept within
the skill levels of all drivers.
Cars are designated by class to ensure drivers’ times
are compared with similar car models. Drivers are
permitted five runs around the course, with new
drivers typically approaching their first run cautiously
to become familiar with the course configuration. By
the end of the second or third run, most neophytes are
“putting the pedal to the metal” and see their times fall
as they become more confident with the course layout,
their car and their own skill level. Cones knocked over
or moved totally outside of their marked position,
even if left standing, attract a 2-second penalty. If a
driver goes off course, backs up or hits a
cone in the stop box at the finish, a DNF
(did not finish) is recorded. Drivers must
wear seatbelts and helmets, with the club
having a number of loaner helmets for
member use.

to stiffen the sidewalls to increase grip and control.
While too little pressure will result in vague handling,
too much pressure will result in a ‘skating’ feel to the
car. As a starting point, first-time drivers may wish to
adopt the pressure recommendations of others in the
same class and fine tune the settings from there. [Note
that there are also a series of moderate, cost-effective
modifications that can be done to your car. If you are
interested, you should talk to John directly.]
Driving Technique
While speed and steering accuracy are obviously
very important, smoothness is paramount to avoid
upsetting car balance and traction. Drivers should walk
the course before the event starts to visualize where to
position the car on each turn. It is best to plan ahead
at least three cones, looking where you want to go
rather than where you don’t. Pick an apex to plan for a
good exit and avoid jerky movements that often result
from small steering corrections. Smoothness is the key
to consistency and control. n
Car Preparation
Stock configuration: It is expected that
cars are in good basic mechanical
condition. Each car undergoes a technical
inspection at the track that covers: seat
belt check, removal of all loose items in
the passenger compartment and boot/
trunk, and ensuring that (a) the battery
is secured; (b) the throttle return springs
are effective; (c) the wheels, steering and
suspension are tight and in good working

KAFFEE KLATCH
REPORT
April 12 Boundary Bay Dyke
The instructions issued by Klatch leaders Doug & Rhonda Gale indicated
“One dozen left turns… and we’re there!” They also pointed out this drive
would be going under four bridges – a train bridge, the Patullo, a SkyTrain
bridge and the Alex Fraser Bridge. On the route they estimated that the
convoy would pass in excess of 1,200 containers – fortunately Klatch
participants were not expected to count them. The major Klatch stop was
the Boundary Bay Dyke, with an opportunity to get out and stretch legs and
take advantage of the photo opportunities. Klatchers were told to watch
for herons and hawks, as well as an 11-car garage en route. Co-hosts Bill
and Nan Heather greeted the convoy at the final destination, the Skyhawk
Restaurant at the Boundary Bay Airport, where 30 people enjoyed lunch.
May 2 Drive Your MG or Jaguar Day
Led by Jim and Sue McLagan, this annual event started at the Brickyard
Station Centre in Cloverdale and continued through Langley and Fort
Langley to Brae Island Regional Park on the Fraser. After a short break,
the convoy continued to The Fort Winery, one of the province’s premiere
fruit wineries. Some klatchers took the opportunity to taste samples, while
others enjoyed the sunshine and view. Back on the road, the drive went
past the small community of Bradner, known for its daffodils and flowers
and then skirting Abbotsford, crossed the Fraser into Mission. The event
wrapped up with a buffet lunch at the Mission Station Grill.
July 11 Powley Prowl

Mike Powley was perhaps best known to us as ‘the voice of the VanDusen
ABFM’ since he announced the winners at the end of the day. Possibly
even more than emceeing this event, Mike enjoyed driving his cars (be it
his first sports car, an MG TF, or his last car, his beloved Morgan 4/4) and
talking to those on a drive. It was not without reason that he called his
website ‘Motormouth”! Mike was called to emcee that ‘Great Field Meet
in the Sky’ in August 2012. It is in his tradition of driving and socializing
that we continue with a drive and a picnic, hosted jointly by the Morgan
Owners’ Group and CXKJR/CCMGC, with additional participation by the
Old English Car Club. July 11 is BC Collector Car Appreciation Day and is
a fitting day to celebrate the joy of driving a classic car in the company of
new and old friends, while also celebrating our friendship with Mike. The
second annual Powley Prowl will follow a route chosen from a book Mike
kept of past and future ‘runs’. It will involve a drive of about an hour and
15 minutes to a provincial campground with a picnic area in the Fraser
Valley. The Morgan group will again award the coveted “Car We Would
Most Like to Drive Home’ plaque to a member of the Jaguar/MG or OECC
club. The drive is open to all with an appreciation of driving their ‘classic
car’ and is not restricted to British or any particularly make. So bring your
favourite car, your favourite co-pilot and a picnic lunch. This will go rain
or shine – I often remember Mike out in shorts and flip flops no matter
what the weather. Further details of the event, including the start point
will be announced through Little Classical Gas. n

on August 15 this year we are including
a Youth Judging activity, sponsored by
Hagerty Insurance. The participants will
receive direction and simple instructions
and then be tasked with judging a small
number of MGs. The object is to promote,
in young people, an interest in classic cars.
We are canvassing for participants, boys
and girls between the ages of 12 to 17.

A
fter a four-month Pan-American journey from the
southern tip of South America, through Central
America, Mexico and the US, the convoy of MGs from
Australia crossed the Canadian border on April 30 and were
greeted by CCMGC members Peter Tilbury and Tony Cox. The
five MGs spent May 1 at the Tilbury Garage dealing with long
lists of service items and repairs. That evening, CCMGC/
CXKJR put on a Welcome Party

bears, bison, elk, caribou, moose, long-horned goats and
even a hedgehog. Magic!

Car Show that
was organized
by the Fraser Valley British Motor Club
was continued under a new name
in a new location at the Atchelitz
Threshermen’s Association. The site at
44146 Luckakuck Way, Chilliwack, just
off Highway #1, is built as a small town
representing the early to mid-1900s.
There’s a museum covering that time
period, which includes an outside
display of antique farm machinery
maintained in full operational condition.
Old fashioned hamburgers are
available at Grannies Kitchen. Show
vehicles must be 1979 or older and in
very good original shape – this show is
not for hotrods or modified vehicles. All
vehicles must be pre-registered before
July 10th. Thanks to the sponsorship

fee for the general viewing public.
