Police Chief Mitch Celaya confirmed on Monday that Hideo I. Sublett, 64, of Napa was found dead at 5:40 p.m. March 22 in his Nissan pick-up by officers who responded to the Cal Mart parking lot after a man drove to the police station to report that “something was wrong with a man in a truck.” Celaya said Sgt. Tim Martin and Officer Mike Perrault responded to the store as did fire department personnel Capt. Joe Russo and firefighter Eric Payne. Fire Chef Steve Campbell said Russo and Payne found Sublett in the front seat of his pickup with the seat in a slight reclining position, his head against the headrest. Both truck windows were rolled down, and Sublett was obviously dead. Campbell said there were signs of rigor mortis and lividity, two natural occurrences within the human body after death. Campbell said he would guess from the water and antacids that Sublett may have thought he was dealing with heartburn but was instead 6 suffering from myocardial infarction, also known as a heart attack. Celaya said officers reviewed video camera tapes of the parking lot on Saturday and discovered that Sublett had driven into the parking lot at 2:19 p.m. Tape showed the 64-year-old going into the market and buying a bottle of water and some antacids, then minutes later returning to his pickup truck which was parked on the See DEATH page 3 conserving water focus of room service Union, district at impasse in contract talks n State mediator will be brought in to negotiate By Pat Hampton Tribune Publisher Contract negotiations have broken down between the school district and the teacher’s union and the two sides have agreed to calling in state mediator to break the impasse. Hotels ask guests to help by re-using towels, bedding By Pat Hampton Tribune Publisher In the middle of welcomed March rains this week, local spas and resorts are asking their overnight guests to be mindful of the state and local water crisis and not ask for daily fresh towels and bedding unless it’s necessary. Chamber of Commerce intern Laurel Oetker-Kast spent Wednesday delivering newly printed tent cards to 22 businesses that asks guests to leave towels on the rack to signal “I’ll use it again” or drop it on the floor and to be replaced with a clean one. See GUESTS page 6 Calistoga’s Recreation Services is hosting its third annual Earth Day events, including a city-wide yard sale in April. The yard sale will be held on April 12 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. throughout the entire city. The registration deadline to have a home added to the map of sales is April 2. Participants should call recreation services coordinator Mary Sherman at 942-2838 to sign up. There is no cost. Last year, the city had 23 houses included in the list of yard sales, as well as additional individuals. To date, the number of yards is up to 10 for next month’s sales. The purpose of the yard sales is to promote the idea of reusing, repurposing, redesigning, reselling, rethinking and repeating. “We are all adding less to the landfill, helping our Earth to have more breathing space,” said Sherman.
