Numbers inside bars represent reference intervals es@mated on the overall sample; numbers outside bars represent extended reference intervals es@mated stra@fying by geographical area. Taking into account the new normal ranges, is platelet count a marker of low-‐grade inflamma@on, associated to the cardiovascular risk in a general popula@on? Low-grade inflammation
•  Low-grade inflammation is a subclinical
(systemic or local, often chronic) condition
characterized by increased levels of plasmatic
and/or cellular biomarkers of inflammation (e.g.
CRP, platelet or White Blood Cell counts)
without any apparent clinical sign.
•  It is an underlying patho-physiological
mechanism linking risk factors or metabolic
disorders (e.g., oxidative stress, obesity,
diabetes, dyslipidemia, etc.) to increased risk of
chronic degenerative disease
