Delaware ranks eighth among
50 states in job climate report
D
elaware ranks as a good place to earn
a living, according to an analysis from
MoneyRates.com
The company ranked all 50 states on five distinct factors: cost of living, average income, state income tax
rates, unemployment, and workplace safety.
Delaware ranked eighth. The state has been seen varied rankings in various surveys.
One wild card is how the state’s relatively higher personal income tax is weighted.
Among the findings in the MoneyRates report:
- The cost of living in Hawaii is about twice as high as
in Mississippi.
- The average employee in Massachusetts makes over
50 percent more than the average employee in Mississippi.
- Several states have no tax on wage income, but in 17
states even someone making an average income can see
state income tax rates of 5 percent or more.

Lewes Historical Society plans new store
In June, the Zwaanendael Club
transferred the deed of the Zwaanendael
Clubhouse at 302 Savannah Road in
Lewes to The Lewes Historical Society
for $1. The society’s 13th major
property, it will house the Society’s
museum shop beginning in 2016. In
the interim, the Society will have it open
for special occasions and looks forward
to welcoming visitors.
The current store, the Ryves Holt
House, will focus on the theme “from
settlement to statehood” in keeping with
the structure’s recent inclusion in First
State National Historical Park. “We are
very grateful for the relationship we have
developed with the Zwaanendael Club
over the years and are humbled that
they trust us with such an important
and prominent Lewes landmark,” says

WSFS Bank rolled out its Mobile Cash app at

WSFS was one of the first banks in the nation to
offer a debit card and recently announced it was
partnering with ZenBank on a mobile banking
application that could move money around in a
number of currencies.
The ZenBank app will be available in the US this
year. It was first rolled out in Canada. ZenBank

the city’s stable outlook.
The service cited Wilmington’s steady financial
position, benefits derived to the city from a

residential and business development, and the
City’s manageable debt burden, leads to Moody’s
affirming the City’s Aa2 bond rating.
The stable outlook reflects the consistent
progression of financial reserves in the City’s

some of the city’s most important tax revenues. In a
press release, Moody’s Investors Service states, “The
stable outlook reflects the likelihood that the city
will continue to maintain consistent reserves and
operate on a balanced basis.”
The rating comes in spite of concerns that the city
could lose revenue if DuPont spin-off Chemours

been made by the new company.

ov. Jack Markell signed a nearly $4 billion
2016 budget early Wednesday morning.
Some motor vehicle fees will go up as a way to
increase transportation funding. Those fees are among
the lowest in the nation. Despite, a nearly a dollar

failed to consider a gas tax increase. In he last session,
Markell received little support from his own party in
attempting to add a dime increase to the tax.
The budget contains increases in motor vehicle fees

funding woes.
Markell focused on funding aimed at improving the
competitiveness of the state workforce.

Markell noted that the budget, despite weak revenue

in funding in continuing a popular program with

The budget contains 2.6 percent growth over Fiscal

the number of students attending Delaware public

The Bond Bill also includes $5 million for
redevelopment of the NVF factory site in Yorklyn
(Hockessin) and the Fort DuPont area near Delaware

UD graduate Chris
Christie enters
presidential race
University of Delaware alumnus Chris Christie,
the two-term governor of New Jersey announced
this week that he will join the Republican field in
the race for the party’s presidential nomination.
Christie made the announcement in his
childhood hometown of Livingston, New Jersey.
This followed the recommendations of the
Wilmington Education Advisory Committee
including an evaluation of the number of charter,
district, and vo-tech schools required to best serve
student needs across the state. House Bill 56 provides
for a moratorium on all new charter schools until this
happens.
He is the second UD grad to make a run for the
nation’s top office. The other is Vice President Joe
Biden, who could join the race on the Democratic
ticket in 2016.
Either candidacy would continue the university’s
legacy as the “epicenter” of national politics, a
term coined by Bloomberg News during the 2008
presidential race when the campaign of Barack
Obama included both Biden and adviser David
Plouffe, an alumnus who went on to work in the
White House, and the campaign of Republican
John McCain included adviser Steve Schmidt, also
an alumnus.
Funding was also included for addiction treatment
and services.
Christie is expected to stake out a middle ground
in a largely conservative field of candidates.
