this area for recreation, you are at your
own risk as the city cannot condone its
recreational use or take responsibility for
those who go there. And by all means, do
not get onto the dam, as that is strictly
prohibited. (I just hope the sunbathers do
not cause a wreck as traffic on the bridge
slows while folks crane their necks to see
the new swimsuit fashions.)
We have said this numerous times before, but are still getting regular complaints about people not keeping their
dogs on a leash and also about dogs being
walked and allowed to leave their waste
on other’s property. Your dog must always be on a leash when it is not on your
property, and please have the respect to
clean up after your dog when it defecates
on property that does not belong to you.
Hopefully, enough said.
A lot of time and money is spent placing flowers around town in public areas.
Now we learn that somebody has taken it
on themselves to take some of them
home. If you see somebody doing this,
please report their tag number to the police dept. Also, if you happen to be the
one responsible: please call my office and I
will be glad to take up a collection to buy
you flowers. Just leave the city’s alone!
Many families are enjoying Sundown

the Old Town Amphitheater on Friday
nights. anks to the volunteers and sponsors who help make this free event possible. While there, be sure to buy something
to eat or drink if possible, as the proceeds
of this help defray expenses, too.
As you know, school is out now, so
watch your speed through town as our
policemen have orders to strictly enforce
the speed limits. is is not being done as
a city fund raiser, but as a precaution for
the safety of our city’s children. Slow
down and don’t become a statistic.
e runoff elections will be held Tuesday, July 13. Please get out and vote.
Many have given their lives for you to

Finally, I hope you all will come out
and enjoy the festivities we have planned
for you to celebrate the 4th of July on
Saturday, July 3 at the Old Town Amphitheater. Bluez ‘n’ Gumbo goes on from
9am-5pm, and then the city will have entertainment leading up to the fireworks

As we celebrate this Fourth of July, it’s appropriate that we honor those who fought to protect the freedoms that we hold so dear. One such individual is a Shelby County man who, in his 20s,
decided to join the army during World War II. He was shipped overseas after basic training where he fought Hitler’s Nazis in the Italian campaign, and stayed there as the war came to an
end helping to mop things up. is man makes his home in Helena today. Part-time employee of Ace Hardware, husband to Latrelle, father to Sheryl (Hill), Fred, Steve and Debbie (Scott), is
86-year-old veteran George Anderson. We owe him and others who fought for us a debt of gratitude for their sacrifice, and it is our pleasure to honor George this month.

Some businesses continue to thrive in a tough economy, even expand. One such business is right here in
Helena, and we think their story is worth a look…
Dayspring Child Care in Helena Expands
and Offers “Success by 6®” Curriculum
H
elena residents Cindy and Bob Kuehner are the owners of a fast growing
group of child care and early learning centers. In Helena, they are known as
Dayspring
Child Care; in Pelham
as Shepherd’s Promise Child
Care; in Alabaster as
Noah’s Park Child Care
and in Calera as Morningstar Child Care.
The idea for them was
formulated in a young
school teacher’ mind a
long time ago. Cindy
Kuehner started her career
as a schoolteacher with a degree from the University of Alabama. She met Bob, a transplant from South Florida, when the two attended high school together in Tuscaloosa.
“We married our sophomore year of college at UA,” she said.
Cindy began teaching school in 1981. After a few years, most of Bob’s family had
moved back to South Florida, and the couple decided to move there, too. Cindy taught
4th through 8th grade there until, pregnant with their third child, she and Bob decided
it was time to move their young family back to Alabama. Bob (the minister of Life
Christian Fellowship and co-owner of the child care centers) says there was never any
doubt in his mind what Cindy wanted to do. Years ago, the couple sat down and had a
conversation about what they wanted to do with the rest of their lives.
“I remember Cindy talking to me about her desire to teach children. I told her that it
wouldn’t pay much money. She said, and I’ll never forget this, that she’d do it if it did
not pay a thing. I knew then that she would be a success,” Bob laughed. Not long after
that, Bob read a report about the deficit in quality home day care when all of a sudden,
a light bulb switched on in his head. “I knew that was something that we could do.”
Cindy continued, “I brought up the idea in my Sunday school class and had three
women say, ‘Sign me up!’”
“We wanted to offer children the chance to have fun while they learned in a structured, organized environment that helps them develop into good students and people,”
Cindy said. “We teach Biblical principles as a part of our curriculum, and we feel it is
important to teach the children how to apply these principles in practical ways.” Bob
added, “Children often do not respond as well to lecturing as they do to ‘games with a
purpose.’”
First opening as a home-based child care center licensed for six children in 1988,
Dayspring Child Care continues to operate on a larger scale today in Helena,” Cindy
said. “We saw the need for quality child care was strong in our area, where often both
the mother and father work outside the home. We decided to apply for a commercial license and open a facility where we could fill this need. We hired top-quality, caring
teachers and focused on giving children the kind of care we’d want for our own children. We are now licensed to accommodate 103 children. Our new 4K center is nearly
complete (one room of which is pictured below right with Director, Tina Logan), and
will bring our capacity up to around 146 by the time the fall semester begins.”
Expanding next into Pelham in 2004, the Kuehners opened Shepherd’s Promise.
With the two most recent acquisitions of Noah’s Park at the entrance to the Ballantrae
community (off Hwy 11 in Alabaster near Joe’s Italian) and Morningstar in Calera (just
off I-65 at the Shelby County Airport exit), Bob and Cindy now care for approximately
550 children and employ over 120.
“We would not be successful without a coordinated team effort from our caring
teachers and directors,” said Cindy. “DHR mandates 24 clock hours of annual continuing education for directors. We provide our directors far more annual training than
that. Last year, they completed more than 75 hours of additional training to keep up
with the most recent advancements in child care. All our directors and teachers have a
heart for children. We would never add a childcare center if we did not have the right
people to teach and serve as directors,” said Bob.
“In Helena, we are proud to have Shelby County resident, Tina Logan, as our director. Tina says the thing she loves about Daysprings is that the owners stress ‘family atmosphere.’ “It’s like working from home,” she laughs, “because it feels like one big
happy family here. We have a Christian philosophy here that starts with our owners,
Bob and Cindy.”
Dayspring provides care for infants through age 5 and use a number of curriculum
tools, including Handwriting Without Tears,® Frog Street Press,® Learn-At-Play® and the
most recent addition to the toolbox, Success by Six.® “These curricula were specifically
and carefully selected to accomplish the demanding developmental goals and objectives
that our parents require for their children,” said Bob. “We’re constantly evaluating what
we do and the tools we use for the benefit of the children
we care for. This year we had nine children start and finish the year with us in 4K. An outside agency was charged
with evaluating the children’s progress at the end of the
year. The test only measures readiness to 6 years, 11
months (2nd grade level). Five were at this level. The remaining four children tested at 1st grade level—all before
they ever start kindergarten! This just proves that our children are learning at a fast pace,
and we ensure they do so in a loving, Christian, nurturing environment.”
“You can teach people almost anything,” said Bob, “but you can’t give them a heart
and passion for excellence. One things I can say for sure is that each of our directors
have a real passion for teaching children.” The Kuehners are hands-on. You can find one
of them at any given time at one of their four centers, and their family works in the
business, too. They have three grown sons: Brad, Bob’s administrator and comptroller;
Case, an assistant director at Dayspring; and Drew, a teacher at Shepherd’s Promise as
well as a college student. Brad’s wife, Katie, is an assistant director at Morningstar.
The childcare business is thriving at Dayspring, and after talking with the owners,
the reasons why become obvious. You may visit them online at http://dayspringkids.us
for more information, or call 620-9757 to schedule a tour of Dayspring Child Care.

cil May 10 meeting.
“It is good for the community to know this story and of the work this lady does,”
Mayor Penhale said of Sonya Smith. “No dogs from Helena have been euthanized in the
past ten years due to her efforts.”
Sonya Unnoppet describes how she found a beagle-mix dog drag herself from a wooded
area behind their Riverwoods home this past February. “When I reached her I could tell
she was in a bad way… she was literally taking her last steps in life.” (Coincidentally, it was
one year to the day the Unnoppets’ adopted stray lab, Black, appeared in their yard.)
Sonya fetched food, which the dog ate ravenously. She immediately transported the dog
to PetSmart, where she was met by two veterinarians. “ey couldn’t say if she would make
it, but wished me luck and sent me home with an IV fluid bag,” Sonya said.
Sonya Unnoppet, a physician’s assistant, and her husband, Dr. Nop Unnoppet, administered pain pills and checked on the dog every two hours throughout the night. e couple
continued to care for the dog and took her for follow-up care, which included having her
tail amputated. ey searched for the dog’s owner through a local website, then contacted
Two by Two Rescue.
“Sonya [Smith] and Brenda [Watkins] were in constant contact and were just fabulous
help,” Sonya Unnoppet said. Later, the dog, healthy and a little plump, was accepted at the
Atlanta Beagle Rescue, renamed Zoey, and is now in a foster home.
Sonya Smith told the Unnoppets, “We are so thrilled that you stepped up to the plate
and provided care and recovery; that is why you are precious to us.”

Meet the Hillmans
D
id you know we have one of the area’s top appliance store owners and his family living right
here in Helena?
Longtime residents and fans of all things Helena, Tyler
Hillman, owner of AllSouth Appliance Group, and his
wife, eresa, first moved here in the 1990s when they
bought a garden home in Timber Park. Both originally
from Pleasant Grove, Tyler said after they married and decided to start a family, they looked all over the Birmingham area for a home, but were drawn to Helena because
of the reputation of the schools and the ‘small town’ feeling
here. ey said it reminded them a lot of Pleasant Grove,
‘a touch of country in the city.’
“Nice neighbors, great schools and a lot of house for
the money,” is the way eresa described their main motivations in the beginning. And when they got here, they
decided they’d stay. When the couple began to have children, they decided to opt for a larger home. Knowing they
wanted to stay in Helena,
they bought a house in
Sunny Brook. e post and
beam style house that once
belonged to the late Bill
Strickland (who owned the
former Bill Strickland
Chevrolet).
“I had a deer feeder behind that house, and it was
exciting because the boys could watch deer walking past
the back windows and even saw two of them in a sparring
match one day,” said Tyler. e boys are the couple’s sons:
Jacob, 10, and Dalton, 8, both will be in Helena Intermediate School this fall.
Needing more room and with an eye on investment
potential, the family has now settled into the home they
purchased recently in Riverwoods. “We love it here,” said
eresa. ey boys can fish in the lakes and it’s just so
peaceful.
Members of the Church at Cahaba Bend, the boys
enjoy the small town life. Jacob plays flag football at the
YMCA spring and fall and takes karate at the school,
where he plans to begin work on his black belt soon. Dalton enjoys playing video games and riding his bike on the
quiet streets of Riverwoods.
Dalton said he loves eating pizza at Little Italy’s, Helena’s latest pizzeria, a sentiment the whole family echoed.
(is writer sampled their homemade lasagna yesterday,

and I must say it was delicious! But I digress…)
eresa says the family also eats often at the Depot
Grill, and she and Tyler enjoy sneaking off to San Antonio
Grill for great Mexican food and drink on occasion.
You know, we do not have an appliance store in Helena yet, but that doesn’t mean you can’t keep your sales
tax dollars in Helena when you buy appliances. If you are
in the market for appliances, gas grills or a vacuum cleaner,
Tyler invites everybody to shop with him at his nearby
Pelham store, AllSouth Appliance Group.
“We carry nearly every name brand under the sun and
we offer price matching, ensuring you get the best price
possible on any appliance you purchase. If you find an appliance somewhere else that’s cheaper, all you have to do is
let me know, and I will match the lower price, no problem,” said Tyler. “We also offer in-home service. And if we
deliver the appliances to your home or office in Helena,
the sales tax dollars go to Helena, too! at is important in
this day and age while municipalities are struggling to
stretch their budget dollars, too.” See AllSouth’s ad in this
edition of the Helena City News. ey are advertising
sponsors, and as such, help bring each issue directly to you.
As we were leaving, I asked eresa where she had gotten her great tan. “At my favorite beach,” she laughed.
“Native Beach, of course. I have been visiting Native
Beach for the past 10 years or so.” (Hey, with all the talk
about oil lining the beaches down south, it’s nice to
know we have at least one beach that doesn’t smell like a
petroleum factory!)

Need an Air Conditioner Repaired? Read this…
I
t’s a rarity these days when you call a contractor to come to your home to fix
something that you already told them was broken and it doesn’t cost you anything, but that’s exactly what happened recently when I called Matt Cantley of
Cantley Heating and Air LLC to come out and take a look at my air conditioner.
It was making the most irritating noises you could imagine, and I knew for sure that
the bearings were gone and the burned out blower motor would need replacing. After
telling him where the unit was in the back yard, it wasn’t but four or five minutes when
he was knocking on my door again. “You just had a screw come loose and the blade was
hitting the housing,” he told me with a smile. “What do I owe you,” I asked. “Nothing,” he said. I wouldn’t feel right charging you for a plastic tie.”
Are you kidding me?!? To say that my jaw hit the floor would be an understatement.
Here I was ready to shell out several hundred bucks and the guy won’t even let me pay
him a service call? Now I know we have a lot of honest, hard-working service businesses
in the area, but in my book, this was above and beyond the call of duty and something
that happens all too rarely.
e next time you are in need of someone honest to look at your air conditioner or
furnace, you might want to write this name and number down and put it someplace
you won’t lose it—Matt Cantley, 586-3099.

Multiple Listing Service
Worldwide
In the last decade the Multiple Listing Service
(MLS) revolutionized the way real estate is sold all over the world. When listing
your home, a Realtor enters the pertinent information about your property into a
computerized inventory bank. The MLS is also on the internet at realtor.com —
dreamhometour.com — remaxfirstchoiceal.com and re/max.com.
Having your home placed on the MLS provides the most effective advertising
available because agents all over the world have immediate access to such information as the price, location, number of bedrooms and baths, as well as the size of the
yard, the type of heating and air-conditioning systems and any special features.
The MLS allows agents to feed in a buyer’s basic needs and match them up to the
listings of all area Realtors. When you list your home, you are employing not only
the listing agent to market your home, but hundreds of the agent’s colleagues who
will work cooperatively to get your property sold as quickly as possible.
P.S. Call me if you need help selecting a real estate agent to
buy or sell. I’ll be happy to assist you!

The Spadgenskes
are Asking the
Community to Join
Them in Praying for
a Miracle for Sawyer
STACIE COLLINS
I
n 1994, Eric and Jennifer Spadgenske
had been married for two years and
were happily expecting their first
child. At 39 weeks, Jennifer went into
labor. When they arrived at the hospital,
they were shocked to find out that their
beautiful baby girl Maddie had died before
she was born. e doctors told them that
it was an accident, and they no idea why
their baby died. Eric and Jennifer were
told to try again.
Just three months later they were expecting their second child. ey were excited but
scared too. After a closely watched pregnancy, their daughter Lily was born five weeks
early by emergency c-section. e doctors instantly knew that something was wrong
with Lily. ree hospitals and countless tests later, Lily was diagnosed with Neonatal
Hemochromatosis (NH), a rare condition which occurs during gestation. Toxic levels
of iron accumulate in the liver as well as other places in the unborn baby’s body.
Eric and Jennifer were told that Lily would die without a life-saving liver transplant.
She was given seven days to live, but she hung on for 24 days until her gift of life, a new
liver, came. She spent the next four months in the hospital, fighting rejection and infection, healing, growing, and getting stronger. Lily came home for the first time when she
was six months old. e couple’s miracle baby is now 14-years-old and is an amazing,
beautiful, kind, caring and intelligent young lady.
In 1999, they found out they were expecting again. Although they were excited, Eric
and Jennifer feared their unborn baby would have the same disease that took their first
baby’s life and required Lily to have a liver transplant. On April 7, 2000, Sawyer was
born. At first doctors declared him completely healthy, but several hours later, Sawyer’s
health started to deteriorate. It was confirmed he had NH, too. At just ten days old,
Sawyer received his second chance at life with a liver transplant. eir baby boy did so
well, he came home when he was seven-weeks-old.
Over the years, Sawyer has unfortunately had many medical issues related to his
transplant. Sadly, his portal vein and his inferior vena cava have occluded, meaning he
has no blood flow through these vessels. is has caused him to get varices—bulging
vessels that rupture easily— that can cause life-threatening bleeds in his esophagus. Unfortunately, Sawyer has had two of these major bleeds. ankfully, the bleeding was
stopped, and his life was saved. He is currently not getting enough blood to his liver,
and his liver is failing. Because of all of this, Sawyer needs a second liver transplant.
Without one, he will continue to get sicker and sicker. Daily, he struggles with pain and
discomfort, but he is incredibly brave through it all. He is believing and trusting in the
Lord in this difficult situation, and he knows that God is always with him.
“For the longest time we have been praying for a miracle for Sawyer. We prayed so
hard, putting all our trust in whatever God’s will is for Sawyer, asking, sometimes begging
for God to heal Sawyer,” Jennifer says. “Now more than ever, we are praying for a miracle.”
Every day the Spadgenskes pray for the perfect liver to come for Sawyer and for him
to be healed. ey are cherishing each moment and resting in God’s word.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not
to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” –Jeremiah 29:11
“ank you from the bottom of my heart for your prayers! Please, please, please pray
for Sawyer and our family…now more than ever! We are clinging to God’s Word and
trusting!” Jennifer said.
If anyone would like to help with fundraising for the Spadgenske family, contact

Aaron’s Staff Offers Respite Care
for Families of Special Needs
Children Beginning June 19
B
eginning June 19, respite care for families of disabled
children will be available through Aaron’s Staff Ministry, the first program of its kind in Shelby County.
The disabled population Aaron’s Staff serves includes, but is not limited to: children
with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, visual and hearing impaired,
and children with developmental disabilities. Currently, care is not provided for those
with self-injuring, aggressive behavior or to children with a severe psychiatric diagnosis.
Respite care is provided, free of charge, 4:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. to qualified disabled
children from infants to age 21 at the Linda Nolen Learning Center in Pelham the
third Saturday of each month. Volunteer medical professionals are on-site to attend to
the medical needs of the children. During the five hours, children will participate, as
much as they can, in fun-filled activities. Snacks are provided.
Aaron’s Staff, a non-profit organization, is staffed with thoroughly screened volunteers,
and is funded by generous individuals, churches and businesses.
Reservations are required, and families interested in respite care should contact Cornerstone Church Pastor Tim Trimble, at 261-9915 or Marilyn Schultz at 620-5004.
How Aaron’s Staff Ministry came into being…
Shortly after Tim and Rhoda’s son Aaron Trimble was born, he was diagnosed with
cerebral palsy. They experienced the challenges and learned that as parents of a special
needs child, they would have to adjust to new roles. They soon discovered that the
need for special care far exceeded available resources. Realizing the tremendous need for
respite care, Aaron's Staff was birthed after the death of Aaron on December 26, 2009.
As the Biblical Aaron’s staff represented new life springing from a dead branch,
Aaron’s Staff Ministry represents new life stemming from the death of Aaron — giving
caregivers rest and allowing them to restore and rejuvenate their energy.

Sara Wolfe Opens Orthodontic Practice in
Helena’s Riverwoods Community
S
ituated across from the Helena Intermediate School is the new orthodontic practice of Dr. Sara Wolfe. A native of Dayton, Ohio, she actually travelled quite a
bit as a child. Her father, Dr. Sanford Wolfe, was a Rheumatologist in the U.S.
Air Force. “Dayton was home for both him and my mother, Karen, so when the time
came for him to retire from the military, Dayton is where we went home to,” said Sara.
Sara says she always wanted to be an engineer growing up, and was good with arts
and crafts. “I loved biology in school, and we must have 20 doctors of one type or another in the family,” she said, “So I got the idea that orthodontics was something that
would incorporate my artistic skills and applied to dental school.
Already having earned her bachelor of science degree from the University of Illinois,
she applied to dental school at e Ohio State University, emphasis on “the,” she
laughed, referring to die-hard fans’ peculiarity as to the school’s name. After graduation,
she moved to Alabama where she met her husband, Jamie Spector, a Mountain Brook
native who graduated from Indian Springs and Haverford College in Pennsylvania.
e two currently live in Homewood, but are
looking at Helena homes now. “We are looking in
Riverwoods because it is so nice and also convenient, but our minds are open.”
Dr. Wolfe’s new practice, Wolfe Orthodontics,
LLC, is next to Legacy Cleaners in the Riverwoods
Shopping Center. As this goes to press, the office
is still under construction. “Plans are to open as
soon as it is finished, sometime in early July, hopefully,” she said. She invites those in need of orthodontic treatment to call now to schedule an
appointment, 419-5562.

From your friends at
HELENA’S
LANDSCAPE SUPPLY
AND NURSERY
Spring has Sprung, Fall has Fell, Summer is back, and it’s hot as H@*L!
s I drive around our beautiful city meeting with people to help with their Lawn
and Landscape needs, it is obvious that most of our residents really care about
their lawns and landscapes. Thanks for helping to make our city beautiful. With
the weather changing with the seasons, new challenges are upon us.
Summer weeds are a different bunch from the spring weeds. Remember to put down
your pre-emergent, Hi Yield with dimension, early and often. For the weeds that are already
up and growing, use one of several products available to spot spray—Fertilome Weed Out
with Q, Bermuda Grass Weeder, MSMA, Weed Out, and others can give you fast results.
Please visit our experts at Helena Landscape Supply and Nursery to get the proper instructions and products for your particular situation. Temperature, rainfall and the types of weeds
you are trying to kill should be considered when choosing a chemical. Application rates and
mixtures are also important to get good results as well as saving money and protecting the
environment. Please let us help you get it done right.
THERE IS A FUNGUS AMONG US! I have noticed many yards are suffering from brown
patch, a fungus that can kill your grass and make your lawn ugly in the meantime. Fertilome Liquid Systemic Fungicide is a broad spectrum fungicide that can control fungus on
fruits and veggies, ornamentals, fruit and nut trees, as well as in your turf areas. It is ease to
apply a relatively inexpensive fungicide. Now here is the secret to keep it from coming
back. “When you spray your landscape for fungus, remember to spray all of your tools and
the underneath side of your lawn mower to prevent spreading the fungus, cut back on your
watering some and let things dry out a little.”
I hope these tips will help you. If you need more help, see Brandon at the nursery.

Bama Buzz Receives Warm AU Welcome
T
he Bama Buzz recently visited Auburn, Alabama to play in the 10 & Under
USSSA Cotton States Global World Series Qualifier. Although the Buzz came
ready to play ball, the highlight of their trip was attending the opening game between Auburn and LSU on Friday night during their weekend series with LSU, where by
special invitation, the Buzz took the field alongside with the Auburn Tigers. In addition
to being presented to the fans, the Buzz participated in the team prayer in left field with
the Tigers. is left a lasting impression on these young men. e Auburn Tigers went
on to win the weekend series, two games to one with LSU.
e Buzz finished the weekend winning their tournament with a 6-0 record, which
qualified them to participate in the USSSA Global World Series this July in Orange
Beach, Alabama. Good luck guys—we’re all Buzz fans around here!
You can be a Buzz fan, too — join them on FaceBook at Bama Buzz Baseball.

O
livia Sims, a recent Pelham High School graduate, received a scholarship to
play volleyball at Freed-Hardeman University in west Tennessee. FHU is a
Christian school that has had a lot of success in the volleyball arena lately with
conference wins and appearances at nationals.
Olivia says, “I’m very excited to be going to Freed-Hardeman. It is the only school I
tried out for, and I’ve wanted to go there since I was a little. My mom went there, and
we would visit the campus for their homecoming. I just loved it.”
Olivia, 6’, will be playing right-side blocker. Blocking is her specialty, and she posted
some top blocking stats while playing for PHS and the Birmingham Volleyball Club.
Coach Kim Kiel, PHS volleyball coach, said, “Olivia is the hardest worker both on and
off the court I’ve ever seen. She’ll be missed.”
Olivia is the daughter of Sandy and Scott Sims of Helena.
Congratulations, and best of luck, Olivia — GO LADY LIONS!

City Cafe
“Eat there once and you’ll be hooked, too!”
International Cuisine with a Family Atmosphere
B
y now, many in town are already
fans of the delicious food served at
City Cafe, located at the corner of
Hwys 58 and 95 (where Brickworks was
once located). For those who have not yet
visited, owners George and Phyllis Pickle
invite you to come in and sample the deliciously varied menu they offer.
With international selections varying
from Chinese and Japanese to ai and Indian, the Pickles also have a menu section
dedicated to Southern Home Cooking, with
garden fresh vegetables offered each day
with traditional entrees like meat loaf,
hamburger steak, fish, shrimp, oysters,
chicken fingers and wings.
is writer’s personal favorite is the
Japanese Teriyaki section of the menu.
Whether you choose shrimp, chicken or
beef, or my personal favorite, shrimp,
chicken AND beef, it is served over rice
and medley vegetables, in teriyaki sauce
simmered to perfection for 14 hours! Add
a side or two of Phyllis’ yam-yam sauce,
pour it over the top and get ready for your
taste buds to explode—it is that good! At
City Cafe, whatever your taste buds are
asking for, there’s sure to be something to
appease them. Do not forget to leave
room for dessert. If you don’t try one of
the side item cobblers, you can choose
from the dessert menu which features a
chocolate molten cake (guaranteed to
turn you into a chocaholic), mouthwatering key lime and lemon icebox pies, creme brulee cheesecake
and even a sopaipilla to take you
just a little south of the border!
A kid’s menu is available for
those 10 and younger. With
drink, selections are all around
$4.50, and include burgers, mac
and cheese, chicken fingers and
fried shrimp. Bring the whole family and
don’t worry about breaking the bank!
e Pickles have created a relaxed,
soothing, family atmosphere inside, highlighted by custom-framed black and white
prints of Helena by photographer
Don Cummings.
Having owned eight restaurants over
the years, Phyllis knows her way around
the kitchen and also knows how to make
her guests feel at home. So the next time
you are wishing we had somewhere new to
eat in Helena, drive over and give City
Cafe a try! Eat there once and you’ll be
hooked, too!”

ount if you can, the specimens of trees, shrubbery and perennials in the yard of
Dan and Linda Zimmerman. You will need many fingers and may possibly
lose count still, as you are distracted by the snowy bobbing branches of spirea
or bridal veil or the prolifically blooming clematis ascending the trellis.
e Zimmermans built in Silver Lakes in 2005, reshaping the once steep grade
around their home and progressing to landscaping every
claimable inch of their property. Builder Ryan Parmley,
who they found to be “genuine
and dependable,” helped salvage and place the rocks now
anchoring the outer edge of the
sweeping front bed.
When Dan was transplanted to the south from Ohio in his current job as general
manager for Chrome Deposit Corporation, Linda visualized gracious southern living in
a charming Victorian house with a garden to match. With no regrets that the visualization didn’t materialize, they appreciate the surrounding hills and their lake view.
“We had to reeducate ourselves about what grows here and are still learning what
works,” said Linda. “We tend to prefer plants that are unusual.” e skillful mixing and
matching that sets the couple’s yard apart is evidence of the careful scrutiny and interest
of both.
Dan likes experimenting with vegetation and trees, such as hosta and palms, while
Linda gravitates towards flowers and blooms where she can make a color statement.
Linda, a declared “artist at heart,” says she tries to “think like nature” when designing a
space, be it small or large.
e Zimmermans have planted 50 trees. Among them are: Yoshima cherry, coralbark Japanese maple, red twig dogwood, ginkgo, smoke, fan palm, purple pansy redbud, sweet bay and corkscrew magnolias as well as naturalizing additional evergreens
and pines on the property perimeter to help with erosion control.
Dan built Linda a potting room on the lower level from salvaged materials with
charming glass-fronted cabinets and beadboard walls. ere is also an area to overwinter
select plants.
A compendium includes several varieties of loropetalum, Andromeda, dwarf mugo
pine, golden thread cypress, lemonade honeysuckle, Mexican heather, firecracker Nandina, wisteria, coral bells, creeping Jenny and accents of black mondo grass. ey have integrated several hosta varieties brought from Ohio. Linda has had good luck growing
and training the crape-like magenta bouganvillea near their mailbox.
Dan has also carved out a vegetable plot, a platform suspended over the hillside that
alternates moveable plank walkways with box beds. In late April, lettuces were six to
eight inches tall and had produced salad for half-dozen meals. Squash and other vegetables are among the plot’s plantings.
ough they caretake most of the yard themselves, they trust Anthony Lilla for additional help throughout the seasons. Dan says the most essential element for success, in
his or any yard, is a soil mix rich with organic matter to ground every plant.

ane Noyes, a student in Melanie Henderson’s kindergarten class at Helena
Elementary School, read a book about upcycling—converting waste materials
into new. environmentally-friendly materials—and convinced his class to recycle their Capri Sun pouches. e class collected their pouches from their snacks and
lunches all during the 2009-2010 school year and he brought them home.
Kane and his grandmother Martha Noyes contacted TerraCycle, an upcycling company, and they in turn sent UPS shipping labels for the Helena grandson-grandmother
duo to send the pouches for upcycling. e company paid his teacher, Mrs. Henderson,
two cents for each pouch mailed in, which in turn are recycled into pencil pouches,
bags, etc. Martha even purchased one of the bags at a local Walmart.
It is amazing the impact one young kindergarten student can have, Kane and his
class collected 2,104 pouches and earned Mrs. Melanie Henderson $42.08 for her classroom. Way to go students!

tate Representative Cam Ward presented a grant of $4,885 last month to Helena
Middle School. Requested by Meredith George, head of the HMS Physical Education department, the monies, part of the community service grants program
appropriated by the Alabama Legislature during the 2009-10 Education Trust Fund
budget, will be used to purchase a new rear projection screen for the school gymnasium.
“Helena Middle School has demonstrated, since the day that it opened, how dedicated they are to bringing about the best possible education for its students. is grant
will help provide the funds for using state-of-the-art equipment to assist in that education,” said Representative Cam Ward.
In addition to using the screen for instructional purposes, the school plans on showing
video clips dedicated to helping students learn better social and nutritional skills.
Rep. Ward also presented a grant for $1,800 to the HMS Future Business Leaders of
America (FBLA) which paid for their recent trip to the Alabama FBLA Conference in
Birmingham. Mrs. Catrice omas’ class won several awards at the conference.

School Volunteer Spotlight
Lisa El-Feraly
H
elena Middle School ParentTeacher Association President
Lisa El-Feraly says, “It’s definitely
been a busy year,” enumerating the projects
of the 2009-2010 school year. Fundraisers,
special events and contributions from parents have enabled the PTO to give the
school over $6,000 this year to help cover
costs not covered by the school budget.
Beginning with the Back-to-School Barbeque, continuing with the Christmas
Dance and culminating with the 8th Grade
Banquet, Lisa has spent enough hours at the
school for the staff to offer her an office of her own.
“Not all the events are purely fundraisers when students reach middle school,” Lisa
notes. “We think it’s important to involve the kids more—to allow them to showcase
their talents as well.”
e PTO catered a teacher’s luncheon five times this year. At Halloween, they raised
over $600 with ‘Boo-Grams’—candy and a message delivered to a friend for $1. Honor
Roll students were honored with cakes, cookies and sundaes each nine-week period.
Lisa says, she and husband, Samy, who is employed by IBERIABANK, were both
very passionate about getting a middle school in Helena. Samy served on the mayoral
committee that helped bring HMS into reality and prepared the powerpoint presentation given at the townhall meeting.
Lisa, who met Samy at Ole Miss, says, “I could not do this job without his support.”
When the Lisa’s youngest child, Sara Grace, began kindergarten, Lisa received a call
from a friend asking her to take one of the open PTO positions at Helena Elementary.
She served as vice-president that year and volunteered for the two following years. After
taking a break, she returned last year as PTO treasurer at HMS.
Lisa considers herself a “do-er” who also enjoys playing tennis in addition to family
activities, which included traveling with her daughter, Alison, with Alabama Juniors
Volleyball Club this past year. Alison will play on the varsity volleyball team at Pelham
High School next fall. e family has two daschunds, Harley and Millie.
e highlight of the year for Lisa was this year’s 8th Grade Banquet. “It gets bigger and
better every year, and it’s a great way for the kids to end middle school on a high note.”
“We could not have done all we did this year without all the moms that help,” Lisa
says. “I want HMS parents to know that the PTO is open to all—we welcome any participation from all parents. Without parent participation we could not have the success that

Lucky Survivor of Freak Accident
Jeff Rozycki Acknowledges Many
Blessings and Acts of Kindness,
Plans to Pay it Forward
O
n the mantle of the home of Jeff and Jennifer Rozycki lays a piece of a tractor trailer brake drum, a
weighty chunk of metal that flew through the windshield and smashed the left side Jeff’s face as he drove near
Gardendale in May 2009. At the time of impact, the Rozyckis
were singing in the car—en route to pick up their children,
Jacob and Zoe, who were visiting grandparents in Ohio.
Jeff’s orbit, nose, cheek and upper jaw were crushed. He
also received a small fracture at the base of his skull; however,
he did not lose consciousness and was able to pull the car safely
onto the shoulder. A following car pulled over to assist and
called 911.
In the year since, Jeff has had reconstructive surgery with
multiple plates and sinus surgery. e most recent surgery in
early May replaced the plates that were initially inserted under his eye, as his iris had
drooped below his lower lid. Doctors Roden, Woodworth and Scruggs, surgeons at
UAB, also did further work on his sinus and orbit structure.
It has been a big ordeal for the family, but Jeff and Jennifer are counting their blessings.
“It was such a freak accident,” Jennifer says, “but many miracles have come from it.”
Jennifer was not harmed, nor was any one else hurt. e Rozyckis are especially grateful that their children were not in the back seat at the time. Jeff never lost consciousness
and didn’t require any transfusions. Doctors told him only the rare two or three individuals survive this type of accident.
“Our friends and co-workers were enormously supportive, and our church family at
Christ the King kept our refrigerator and freezer full
for months. We want to publically say thank you to
everyone for their thoughts, prayers and support.”
Jennifer is employed at One Domain, and Jeff, an
electrical engineer at Taranis, is now able to work
part-time.
At Halloween, Jeff—who by necessity must sometimes wear an eye patch—joined son Jacob, with
matching eye patches as part of their pirate costumes.
Jeff’s left eye has no mobility, therefore it cannot
focus in sync with his right eye. He will likely have
double vision the remainder of his life, but is adapting
as best he can and regaining his strength. He continues to be involved as a coach with the Zoe’s softball
team and hopes to soon be able to become more active with Jacob’s Troop 2 scouting activities.
In acknowledging their blessings, the Rozyckis
mention the kindness from people of all denominations during their hospital stay. “It made us realize
that we are all part of the same world,” they said.
“No doubt it was a wake-up call for me,” Jeff says with emotion. “It restored my faith
in God and in other people, and made me realize how much I was taking for granted. I
prayerfully appreciate my life every day and we thank God together as a family.”
“I feel more compassion for others, and Jennifer and I want to take action and give
back,” Jeff affirms. “We want to pay it forward,” adds Jennifer.
e Rozyckis were already planning to invest in Gamin’ Ride—a mobile video game
theater for parties/events—before the accident, and now they are looking forward to beginning their own franchise locally this summer. ey will be donating a portion of all
proceeds in the 35080 zip code to the Helena community, beginning with local schools.

t’s hard to beat the Buck Creek Festival, Helena’s annual “Put On Your Shorts Party” to
kick off summer fun! Thanks once gain to all the sponsors who helped pay for the event and
to the Buck Creek Festival Committee who worked tirelessly all year to make it happen.
The group did a wonderful job lining up the entertainment and staging the party once again. If
you’re like most who attended Friday night, you were sure that nobody could beat Mustang
Sally, the girl group from Tennessee who are on their way to a lucrative recording contract,
when along comes mild mannered Jason D. Williams on Saturday. I guess the twenty or so
women on stage with him at the end of his set were testament enough to his star power! Both
headline acts were sensational, as were most of the other performers who entertained throughout
the festival. The food was more plentiful than in any previous year, the beverage dispensers
stayed busy, the weather was perfect and all in all, it was just a great time to be alive, well and
living in Helena. Thanks again to Cris Nelson and her staff for a job well done! Now we hope
you enjoy these snapshots taken by your Helena City News photographers…
