Welcome to the 30th annual Atlantic Craft Trade Show. Newfoundland
and Labrador is delighted to host this milestone event during such a
monumental year. Newfoundland and Labrador has a thriving craft
industry, and we are excited to share our enthusiasm with all visitors
and participants of this year’s show. The Canadian Arts Federation has
proclaimed 2007 the “Year of the Craft”. This appropriately recognizes
Canada’s contemporary and traditional craft cultures and practices.
With more than 22,000 professional craftspeople across our country,
whose work generates more than $700 million in revenue annually, it
is a fitting honour to bestow on Canada’s burgeoning craft industry.
Our local, regional and global marketplaces change rapidly.
Atlantic Canada’s craft industry continues to adapt to these changes by
marrying traditional methods and modern techniques. Our craftspeople are using the latest technologies and applying best practice
philosophies to enhance products and strengthen bottom lines. We
have skilled artisans turning tradition and talent into commerce, and
creating opportunities for employment, and skills and knowledge
transfers. And we are accomplishing this at home while answering the
worldwide demand for our region’s original products.
Atlantic Canada is blessed with a myriad of talented artisans and
craftspeople who are weaving their creations into viable business
opportunities, while preserving and promoting our region’s unique
cultures and heritage. The Atlantic Craft Trade Show provides artisans
with the opportunity to showcase talent, network with industry
professionals and celebrate the uniqueness of Atlantic Canada’s artistry.
As Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, I offer my congratulations
