Welcome to our Parish
MISSION STATEMENT—We, the community of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, located within
the larger, diverse and artistic seaside community of Laguna Beach, recognize and celebrate
the uniqueness which is grounded in the sacred mysteries and traditions of the Roman Catholic Church and in the history and lives of our individuals, families and leaders. Built on these
roots, and in order to see the world as God sees it, we commit ourselves to: being a welcoming
sanctuary and a place of prayer and worship, nurturing, assisting, encouraging and serving all
those in need, offering all generations opportunities for personal and communal growth, and,
by these commitments, to honor our call to evangelization.

The Ascension of the Lord
I am with you always, until the end of the age. (Matthew 28:20)
This is a bittersweet day. On the one hand, we celebrate Jesus, the Son of God, being
lifted up into heaven, exalted as Lord above all of creation.
On the other hand, Jesus is no longer with us. Wouldn’t it be better if he could still
walk among us, visiting every nation, performing miracles, and continuing to teach
us how to life? Imagine the impact he could have had over the past two thousand
years!
But the truth is, Jesus has not left us alone. He is still with us; he still guides us. And
even better, he is also in heaven, interceding for us before his Father (Hebrews 9:24).
When he walked the earth, Jesus was limited by his human body. A man like us in all
things bug sin, he could travel only so far. He was limited by hunger, pain, and tiredness. He could do only so much. But now, risen and glorified, Jesus has no limitations. He is free to do so much more! He can comfort a grieving widow in South Africa at the same time that he is giving wisdom to a perplexed young man in Norway.
He can pour out grace and healing at every Mass being celebrated at every moment
and still be present to every lonely soul searching for him in silence.
Pope Francis once said that Jesus is like a rope guide, who climbs the “mountain of the
Lord” before us and then pulls us up with him. If anything along our journey up that
mountain causes problems or gets in the way, he comes to our rescue. He always forgives us, consoles us, and blesses us. He is our advocate and our defender against the
evil one.
Isn’t it comforting to know that Jesus is always with us — in good times and bad —
until the end of the world?
“Jesus, I am so grateful for the way you love me and care for me!”
Father’s Day Novena
Our Father’s Day Novena begins on Thursday, June 5th
Cards are available at the back of the Church
As the foster father of Jesus Christ, Saint Joseph is the patron saint of all fathers. This novena, or nine-day prayer, is
therefore especially well suited for fathers to ask for the graces and strength necessary to rear their children well, or for
children to pray on behalf of their fathers.
Novena to Saint Joseph — Glorious St. Joseph, foster father and protector of Jesus Christ. To you I raise my heart and
my hands to implore your powerful intercession. Please obtain for me from the kind Heart of Jesus the help and graces
necessary for my spiritual and temporal welfare. I ask particularly for the grace of a happy death and the special favor I
now implore. (your request)
Guardian of the Word Incarnate, I feel animated with confidence that your prayers in my behalf will be graciously heard
before the throne of God.
V. O glorious St. Joseph, through the love you bear to Jesus Christ, and for the glory of His Name.
R. Hear my prayers and obtain my petitions. Amen.

In the Easter season until now, we have heard accounts of the Risen Lord’s appearances to his disciples, sometimes individually, but most often when they are assembled together, and very often at meals. Now they are faced with they mystery of the Lord’s disappearance from their sight, coupled with a deepening awareness of his constant presence.
We recall the days when the church took shape from the quality of
relationships forged among the first disciples through their following
of Christ. From then on, they are meant to be the sign of Christ’s
presence in the world. As we, the baptized, gather week by week,
we too are shaped into a sacrament of God’s justice for the world.
Like the first disciples, we too are “works in progress,” unfinished
works of art. Many of us are splashed with water at the beginning
of Mass in this season, an effective and refreshing wake-up call for
us to engage ever more fully with our baptism. We are nearing the
end of ninety days of renewal. Lent and Easter are drawing to a
rousing close. Has Christ “Eastered” in you yet?

Are you looking for a ministry to join—as an individual or a
family. Please consider serving as an usher.
Ushers provide hospitality, comfort and safety at weekend Masses and
other liturgies (including Holy Days of Obligation). Before Mass, ushers
foster a sense of community by welcoming members of our parish and
visitors as well as assisting with seating before and during Mass.
Ushers are responsible for taking up the collection and distributing the
weekly bulletin. Come celebrate Mass with your family, serve and be
an example of Christ’s love and witness to our community.

JOY RECEIVED- WASHED CLEAN
At the Easter Vigil our Neophytes received the Sacrament of Baptism from Fr. Ken Schmit, along with
Confirmation and Eucharist. The joy of being washed clean of sin was felt by the Neophytes and the
assembly as everyone renewed their Baptismal vows.
Our Neophytes will be sharing their faith stories in the near future at several masses on Sundays.
They will give witness to how the process in the RCIA led to the experience of receiving the Sacraments at the Easter Vigil and what it means for them.
Just as their new participation in sacraments enlightens the neophytes’ understanding of the scriptures, so too it increases their contact with the rest of the faithful and has impact on the community.
