1
Satellite technologies integration Vision
The Italian Space Agency is promoting since long time the
integration of satellite technologies NAV, COM, EO in order to foster
and guarantee effective solutions Applications and Services, :
GNSS, Galileo Programme and its precursor EGNOS;
The national wide band communication satellite programme;
The earth observation programme COSMO‐SKYMED, high
resolution, dual mode imaging system.
2
Space Economy Strategic Plan
Italy has recently set up a Space Economy Strategic Plan as an
instrument to design a new sustainable national space policy.
This Plan details the long term objects of national positioning (2030)
in the global Space Economy market. It recognises the importance of
downstream activities to sustain space systems.
It defines the action lines and the necessary resourses to allow the
necessary development initiatives.
It establishes a new integrated model of intervention based on
combined efforts at national, regional and private level.
3
Promotion of applications in transport sector
National Space Economy promotion of transport sector major
Objective:
 Identify satellite products capable to support the needs for
transport sector automation in fields as aeronautical, maritime
and terrestrial transport.
ASI Cooperation with the Ministry of Infrastructures and Transport
 Focussed on trasports and mobility in general, with particular
attention to the safety of navigation and the infomobility,
 Maximizing the use of space technologies such as satellite
navigation (with focus to the European GNSS, EGNOS Galileo),
satellite telecommunications and earth observation.
4
Promotion of applications in transport sector
ROAD
• Transport of dangerous goods
• Digital tachograph
• Road charging
• eCall
• Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C‐ITS)
• Autonomous/driverless and connected vehicles
MARITIME
• Traffic control and safety of navigation
• Ship routes optimization
• Port Management
• Sea emergency Management
5
Promotion of applications in transport sector
RAIL
• ERTMS evolution to include GNSS and the
communications based in IP protocol.
AVIATION
• Sustain use of EGNOS in civil aviation in
Europe and outside Europe preparing the
introduction of Galileo initial services;
• Promote services in the general aviation and
the helicopter flights.
• Develop projects and regulatory actions
aimed to the operational integration of the
remote piloted aircrafts in the general
aviation traffic and into a single sky.
6
Promotion of applications in maritime transport
Some Maritime Transport Applications Project funded by ASI:
SESTANTE (Services for Transport Safety based on Satellite Navigation and other technologies): Applications and services aimed to improve safety and efficiency in
commercial and personal navigation.
Mainly focussed on: Sea motorways and prevention of Sea emergencies
and Search & rescue actions support.
Three Projects in the frame of SMEs sustain: NAUS , NARVALO and MISSION
NAUS : "New AIS Utilities for Ships"
Integrated system for sea navigation support, aimed at commercial
navigation; Real time monitoring service base on information exchange
between ships and the ground control centre; Use of alternative
communication channels (Ka/Ku band TLC satellites ); On board sensors
data collection (meteo and other local information); Satellite navigation
compass for navigation.
7
Promotion of applications in maritime transport
NARVALO
Aimed at develop a system for mitigating the collision risk in crowded areas.
Applications foreseen in Ports and Interports areas.
MISSION: “Maritime Integrated Satellite System in an InterOperable service
Network”
Integrated platform to collect telemetric data between various means, based on a
hybrid (wireless – satellite) communication infrastructure, complemented by GNSS
information.
Three Projects in the frame of ESA ARTES 20 Programme: SIMONA and EASY
EASY (Easy And Safe Yachting)
“One‐stop‐shop” services for the high‐value leisure yachting market mainly for the
Mediterranean Sea, integrating various space assets (Satellite Communications and
Satellite Navigation), providing enhanced services to make yachting more reliable,
safe and “easy”, based on a Service Centre and a set of User Terminals, which are
connected through SATCOM or other WAN communication means.
8
Promotion of applications in maritime transport
SIMONA
to provide an information platform, based on the integration of satellite and
terrestrial data, which complement and enhance existing Maritime situation
awareness services operated by Italian Coast Guard and Navy over a wide area of
the Mediterranean Sea, and provide space‐based services to private stakeholders
like Merchant ships Insurance Companies and leisure boat users:
• detection of non‐collaborative ships based on EO images, and through users‐shared
positions and collaborative messages;
• support the detection of illegal buildings along coastal areas, through the elaboration of
satellite images and overlapping with cadastral data;
• provide data on maritime situation;
• check vessels condition during navigation and/or in emergency situations through
elaboration of EO satellite images;
• exchange data with insurance companies in order to create a reliable picture of the
existent risks.
PROFUMO

Other National Cooperations in the transport sector
ASI Cooperation with the Istituto Italiano di Navigazione
 To Sustain the Institute in the divulgation action, promoting the
use of satellite technologies in the navigation world, in the
various transport modalities.
 To Sustain the Institute in the activity of promoting and diffusion
of space services towards the public administrations interested
to navigation, as well as promoting the industrial activities in the
transport applications.
