Palmer School of Library and Information Science
Dr. Hunter of the Palmer School of Library and Information Science will speak to members
of ARMA Connecticut Chapter, at the Yankee Silversmith in Wallingford, CT, on November 28, 2006 at
11:30 a.m., concerning the long-term preservation of digital information. The long-term preservation of
digital information is one of the major challenges facing contemporary society. The fragility of physical
media and the rapid obsolescence of hardware and software are challenges faced by organizations of all
sizes. This presentation will look at three “eras” of digital archives: the past focus on media preservation,
the present multiplicity of approaches and projects, and the future where digital preservation is a
sustainable, normal-course-of-business activity. Dr. Hunter will also brief us on the Electronic Records
Archive (ERA), a massive and challenging project of the National Archives and Records Administration
(NARA).

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Remember the Alamo?
I had the opportunity, along with several CT
Chapter members, to attend the 51st ARMA International Conference held
late last month in San Antonio (that’s my hotel to the right and in back of
the Alamo). Other chapter members attending were Melissa Dederer,
Eunice DiBella, Ron Ellis, Cindi Lemay, Carolyn Mariani and LeAnn
Power. Aside from the cowboy boots and hat, I returned with many great memories and yes,
some great RIM ideas. The theme of the Conference was “Showcasing the Business and
Technology of Managing Records and Information”. Another great benefit was the opportunity
to meet and listen to speakers from the ARMA International Board and the Headquarters Staff.
Here are just a few tidbits from this superb conference.
On ARMA Leadership Day, President Susan McKinney’s welcome included a summarization
of the events leading up to the decision not to pursue an ARMA-AIIM merger. Although the
two organizations may work on future projects together, the main deal breaker was a difference
in constituency. ARMA is primarily an organization of RIM professionals; AIIM has more of a
vendor focus.
President-elect Carol Choksy updated us on the ARMA strategic planning
process. Look on arma.org for a draft of the plan. This is a high-quality
document that obviously took much thought and experience to compile. The
Plan focuses heavily on ways to promote the RIM profession and provide it
with greater corporate recognition.
HQ Marketing Manager, Jeff Randolph stole the show with a great
deal of levity but he also gave us many solid tips on how to market a
chapter for success. Did you know that the average person needs to
hear advertising 15 times before being compelled to take action?
There is so much information clutter out there that
it takes repetition to make a lasting impression.
The Monday morning Opening Ceremonies got off to a booming start with a
drum contingent from a local school. If anyone was the least bit sleepy
coming in….not any more!
After opening remarks, ARMA President Susan
McKinney introduced Hon. Shira A, Scheindlin who masterfully
explained “Electronic Discovery Sanctions in the 21st Century:
Avoiding Perils and Pitfalls”. Following her presentation a “FAQ
Live” session was held where Judge Scheindlin answered questions
submitted by the membership.
Monday evening we attended the “Denim and Diamonds” Awards Dinner at
the Convention center. Cindi Lemay participated on the Website Award
Committee and announced the website winners.

Web site awards are given to a small, medium and large chapter and one region website.
(Our website is in the development stage. Content has been accumulated and transferred
to a contracted web hosting/design firm.)
The vendor exposition was packed with over 150 vendors selling RIM computer software,
hardware, physical filing equipment, office supplies, commercial records center services,
RIM consulting, disaster recovery services, imaging systems, work flow management and last
but not least, the ARMA International Bookstore
Next year the ARMA Conference is in Baltimore, which is sort of close to Connecticut.
You should go if you can.

SHERWIN YODER SPEAKS ON NEW FEDERAL RULES
By Bill Ludkiewicz, CRM
Sherwin Yoder, JD
Not since the days of bell-bottomed pants and lava lamps have the Federal Rules of Civil
Procedure changed in regard to the discovery of electronic information. This interesting
anecdote was conveyed by our speaker Sherwin Yoder, JD, at our October 17, 2006 educational
meeting in Cromwell. Mr. Yoder, an associate with Carmody & Torrance, LLP, spoke on the
new rules and their impact on records management and
e-discovery. We learned the rules will become effective December 1, 2006. These rules
contain many guidelines already in use as a result of federal case law established by Federal
Judge Shira Scheindlin in the five Zubulake v. UBS Warburg decisions. Mr. Yoder profiled
Zubulake and other cases that were essentially “electronic discovery nightmares”.
Of particular interest to the audience of RIM professionals was Mr. Yoder’s list of best
e-discovery practices for records managers. “Educate yourself” and “work with counsel now”
were top suggestions elaborated by Mr. Yoder. He also referred to another great source of
guidance: Judge Scheindlin’s “Top 10 List”.
The presentation was followed by an enthusiastic question and answer period. We thank Mr.
Yoder for his excellent enlightening presentation.
