El cabido rehabilita las norias de tracción
animal

La Consejería de Cultura y Patrimonio Histórico del
Cabildo impulsa un proyecto que se está ejecutando
en estos momentos en la Villa de Betancuria, con el
objetivo de recuperar dos interesantes bienes del
conjunto cultural de la capital histórica de Canarias,
las norias de tiro utilizadas antiguamente para obtener agua en el Pozo de La Calle y el Pozo de Los Peña.
La utilización de este tipo de estructuras, que combinan engranajes mecánicos con la tracción animal
para obtener agua de los pozos de la Isla, se generalizó en Fuerteventura a partir de la mitad del siglo
XIX, para luego abandonarse a mediados del siglo
XX con la llegada de nuevas técnicas de extracción.
La consejera del área en el Cabildo, Genara Ruíz,
destacaba el trabajo del personal de la Corporación
en la ejecución del proyecto. “Los maestros carpinteros de los talleres del Cabildo han realizado un
magnífico trabajo, en primer lugar recuperando las
piezas y engranajes mecánicos de las norias originales, y reproduciendo luego las estructuras de madera
de estas norias con gran precisión”.
Genera Ruíz agregó que “el resultado en la primera
noria, que ya está a punto de terminarse en el Pozo
de La Calle, no es sólo muy agradable a la vista, sino
que además es funcional. Una vez que se instalen
los cántaros, se podrá volver a sacar agua con un
burro o un camello como mismo se hiciera el siglo
pasado”. La consejera destacó también “el atractivo
turístico que puede suponer para los visitantes poder
presenciar el proceso de esta manera tan llamativa
y auténtica”.
Durante el proceso de restauración de estas infraestructuras hidráulicas se ha reproducido la apariencia de madera desgastada de las norias originales.
Para ello, los maestros carpinteros del Cabildo han
aplicado un proceso de envejecimiento aplicando
arena a presión en la superficie de la madera.
Historia de las norias
Uno de los elementos que caracteriza el paisaje
cultural de Fuerteventura son los artefactos para
elevar agua llamados norias. Estos artilugios, que
giraban hasta mediados del siglo XX en la Isla, se
encontraban distribuidos principalmente en el centro
de la Isla, y tuvieron presencia en zonas como Tuineje,
Pájara, Agua de Bueyes, Antigua, Vega de Río Palmas,
Betancuria y Valle de Santa Inés.
Noria es un término árabe que significa rueda
hidráulica. Aunque su utilización se basa en conocimientos teóricos de épocas helenísticas, y su origen
se atribuye al pueblo persa, en Fuerteventura, no se
tiene constancia de su utilización hasta la segunda
mitad del siglo XIX.
José de León y Falcón, comisionado regio, hizo un
balance de los recursos hídricos de la Isla en 1952,
destacando en este documento la ausencia de medios mecánicos para la obtención de agua en toda
Fuerteventura, lo que le lleva a sugerir apoyos oficiales para la introducción de norias y otras estructuras.
Ya en la década de 1880, varios historiadores y
viajeros reflejaron en sus escritos la presencia de
estas estructuras en la Isla, entre ellos Agustín Millares (1881), Verneau (1886), u Olivia Stone (1884).

The Cabildo rehabilitates animal activated
waterwheels
The Cabildo’s Culture and Historic Heritage Council
has initiated a project that is currently taking place
in Betancuria in order to restore two interesting
features of the historic Capital of the Canaries, the
animal activated waterwheels that were used to get
the water from the wells called Pozo de la Calle and
Pozo de Los Peña.
The use of those structures, that combine mechanical cogs that would have traditionally been activated
by animals in order to draw water from the Island’s
wells, expanded from the second half of the 19th
century and was later abandoned in the middle of
the 20th century with the arrival of new extraction
techniques.
The councillor, Genara Ruiz, highlighted the work
carried out by the Corporation’s staff for this project.
“The carpenters of the Cabildo’s workshop have
achieved wonderful work, first to recover the parts
and mechanical cogs from the original waterwheels
and then to reproduce the wooden structures of those
waterwheels with such precision”.
Genera Ruiz added that “the result on the first
waterwheel, which is almost completed for Pozo de
La Calle, is not only pleasing on the eye, but it also
works. Once all the parts are back in place, it will be
possible once again to draw water with a donkey or a
camel as it was done a century ago”. The councillor
also emphasised on “the impact on the tourism that
will be generated by visitors wanting to witness this
attractive and authentic feature”.
During the restoration project of the hydraulic
infrastructures the wood was reproduced with the
appearance of the worn out wood from the original
waterwheels. In order to do so, the Cabildo’s master
carpenters used an aging process using sand at high
pressure on the wood surface.
History of the waterwheels
One of the elements that characterise the cultural
landscape of Fuerteventura are the artefacts used
to draw water called waterwheels. Those devices
that were used until the middle of the 20th century
on the Island are found mainly in the centre of the
Island in the areas of Tuineje, Pájara, Agua de Bueyes,
Antigua, Vega de Río Palmas, Betancuria and Valle
de Santa Inés.
Noria (waterwheel) in Spanish comes from an Arab
word that means hydraulic wheel. Although its use is
based on theory knowledge from the Hellenistic era,
and its origins go back to the Persians, in Fuerteventura there is no evidence showing that is was actually
used until the second half of the 19th century.
José de Léon y Falcón, commissioned regal, made a
register of hydraulic resources on the island in 1952,
which shows the lack of mechanical means to draw
water in Fuerteventura, which made him suggest
official support for the introduction of waterwheels
and other structures.
In the decade of 1880, various historians and
travellers highlighted in their reports the presence
of those structures o the Island, such as Agustín Millares (1881), Verneau (1886), u Olivia Stone (1884)
to name a few.
Der Cabido renoviert die von Tieren angetriebenen
Schöpfräder
Das Amt für Kultur und historisches Erbe treibt
zurzeit ein Projekt in Villa de Betancuria voran,
um zwei interessante Kulturgüter der historischen
Hauptstadt der Kanaren wieder einzuführen: Die
Norias (Zugschöpfräder), die früher benutzt wurden,
um Wasser aus den Brunnen von La Calle und Los
Peña zu befördern.
Die Verwendung derartiger Strukturen, bei denen mechanische Räderwerke von Tieren gezogen
werden, um Wasser aus den Brunnen der Insel zu
erhalten, wurde auf Fuerteventura Mitte des XIX.
Jahrhunderts eingeführt und mit der Ankunft der
neuen Technologien Mitte des XX. Jahrhunderts
wieder aufgegeben.
Die für diesen Bereich verantwortliche Beauftragte
des Cabildo, Genara Ruiz, unterstrich die Bedeutung
der Arbeit des Personals der Inselregierung bei der
Ausführung des Projektes: „Die Schreinermeister der
Werstätten des Cabildo haben eine großartige Arbeit
geleistet. Zuerst haben sie die Teile und Getriebe der
ursprünglichen mechanischen Schöpfräder wiederhergestellt, und dann haben sie die Holzstrukturen
dieser Schöpfräder genau nachgebildet“.
Genera Ruiz fügte hinzu, das „Ergebnis des ersten
Schöpfrades, das zurzeit in Pozo de La Calle fertig
gestellt wird, ist nicht nur sehr befriedigend, sondern
auch sehr funktional. Sobald die Krüge angebracht
sind, kann man wieder mit einem Esel oder einem
Kamel Wasser holen. Genau wie vor hundert Jahren.
Die Politikerin betonte auch „den touristischen Reiz,
den es für die Besucher haben kann, einem so
authentischen und Aufsehen erregenden Prozess
beizuwohnen”.
Diese hydraulischen Infrastrukturen wurden so
hergestellt, dass das Holz gebraucht aussieht. Dafür
verwendeten die Schreiner einen Alterungsprozess
durch Sand auf der Oberfläche des Holzes.
Geschichte der Norias (Schöpfräder)
Die Schöpfräder, Geräte um Wasser zu pumpen,
sind typisch für die kulturelle Landschaft von Fuerteventura. Diese Apparate wurden bis Mitte des XX.
Jahrhundert vor allem Im Zentrum der Insel verwendet. Es gab sie in Gegenden wie Tuineje, Pájara, Agua
de Bueyes, Antigua, Vega de Río Palmas, Betancuria
und Valle de Santa Inés.
Noria ist ein arabisches Wort und bedeutet Wasserrad. Obwohl sein System auf hydraulischen Kenntnissen des hellenistischen Zeitalters basiert, scheint
es von den Persern erfunden worden zu sein. Es gibt
keine Zeugnisse darüber, ob es auf Fuerteventura vor
der zweiten Hälfte des XIX Jahrhunderts verwendet
wurde.
Der königliche Bevollmächtigte José de León y
Falcón zog 1952 eine Bilanz über die hydraulischen
Mittel der Insel. In dem Dokument fällt auf, dass keine
mechanischen Mittel für die Gewinnung von Wasser
auf ganz Fuerteventura erwähnt werden. Deshalb
kann man vermuten, dass es damals offizielle Unterstützung gab, um Norias und andere Strukturen
einzuführen.
Schon in den 80-er Jahren des IX. Jahrhunderts
berichteten mehrere Historiker und Reisende, dass
es auf der Insel diese Strukturen gab. Zu diesen gehörten Agustín Millares (1881), Verneau (1886) und
Olivia Stone (1884).

Los “desayunos majoreros” cautivan a la
prensa nacional
La Cámara de Comercio de Fuerteventura, fruto
del Convenio suscrito con el Consejo Regulador del
Queso Majorero y del acuerdo establecido con el I.E.S.
Jandía en la especialidad de Hostelería y Turismo,
está llevando a cabo una iniciativa que consiste en
una serie de degustaciones de los quesos con denominación de origen de la isla de Fuerteventura a
los principales medios de comunicación nacionales
con sede en Madrid.
El proyecto trata de promocionar el destino Fuerteventura, a través de uno de sus productos insignia, el
queso majorero, definido como la “Joya del Atlántico”
por mantener sus cualidades artesanales de elaboración y por el prestigio que ha obtenido en numerosos
galardones y premios internacionales.
Generalmente, la isla es conocida y valorada mundialmente por sus paisajes arenosos y sus espectaculares playas, así como por la peculiaridad de su paisaje
rural. Pero es hora de desvelar uno de sus secretos
mejor guardados: el queso majorero, un queso de
cabra elaborado artesanalmente que, por sus características y particularidades únicas, hacen de este
producto una de las sensaciones gastronómicas más
valoradas una vez se conoce y se tiene la oportunidad
de probarlo, ya sea sólo o preparado en un sinfín de
variedades culinarias en la cocina más vanguardista.
Para ello, la Cámara de Comercio, Industria y
Navegación de Fuerteventura está acercando este
prestigioso producto a numerosas redacciones de
prensa escrita, emisoras de radio y televisión, de la
mano de Francisco Cabrera (profesor y responsable
del Departamento de Cocina del I.E.S. Jandía) y dos
alumnos de la Escuela de Hostelería de Jandía, así
como el responsable de comunicación de la Cámara
de Comercio, que gustosamente, van trasladándose
por las redacciones para difundir y promocionar
una degustación de dichos quesos, entregar varias
“Majorero Breakfasts”
get the attention from
the national press
As a result of agreements with the Majorero Cheese
Regulating Council and with I.E.S. Jandía specialising
in Tourism and Hotel Trade, Fuerteventura’s Chamber
of Commerce has launched an initiative that consists
of a series of tastings of the cheeses of denomination
of origin of the Island of Fuerteventura directed to
the main Spanish national communication Medias
located in Madrid.
The project aims to promote Fuerteventura as a
destination, through one of its emblem products,
Majorero cheese, defined as “the Atlantic Jewel”
for maintaining its handmade elaboration qualities
and for the prestige it has gained through numerous
international prizes.
Generally, the island is known and appreciated
worldwide for its sandy landscape and its spectacular beaches, as well as the peculiarity of its rural
landscape. But it is now time to unveil one of its best
kept secrets: the Majorero cheese, a goat cheese
that is handmade and whose characteristics and
unique peculiarities, make it one of the most valued
gastronomic sensations. Now is the opportunity to
discover it, either on its own or prepared in a multitude
of culinary varieties of the most avant-garde recipes.
To do so, Fuerteventura’s Chamber of Commerce,
Industry and Navigation is bringing this prestigious
product to various press, radio and television editorial
offices with the collaboration of Francisco Cabrera
(teacher and manager of de Cooking Department
of I.E.S. Jandía), two students of the Hotel Industry

Generell ist die Insel auf der ganzen Welt wegen
ihrer sandigen Landschaft, ihrer spektakulären
Strände und ihrer einzigartigen ländlichen Gebiete
weltberühmt. Aber nun ist der Zeitpunkt gekommen,
um eines ihrer am besten gehüteten Geheimnisse
zu lüften: den „Queso Majorero“, einen handgemachten Ziegenkäse, der aufgrund seiner einzigartigen
Eigenschaften zu einer der am höchsten geschätzten
gastronomischen Sensationen wurde. Man sollte die
Gelegenheit nutzen ihn zu probieren, egal ob allein
oder als Teil einer der zahlreichen Gerichte der avantgardistischen Küche.
Deshalb macht die Kammer für Handel, Industrie
und Seefahrt von Fuerteventura dieses hoch geschätzte Produkt den zahlreichen Zeitungsredaktionen, Radio- und Fernsehsendern bekannt. Dafür
zuständig sind Francisco Cabrera (Professor und
Verantwortlicher der Küchenabteilung des I.E.S.
Jandía), zwei Schüler der Schule für das Hotel- und
Gaststättengewerbe von Jandía und der Verantwortliche für Kommunikation der Handelskammer. Die
letztere bringt den Käse gern in die Redaktionen, um
ihn bekannt zu machen und für ihn zu werben. Die
Handelskammer übergibt mehrere eingeschweißte
Käse und ein Dossier mit Bildern der Insel, in dem
erklärt wird, wie dieser Käse hergestellt wird. Außerdem wird darin für das touristische Angebot der Insel
geworben.
Darüber hinaus stellt die Handelskammer von
Fuerteventura eine Reise für zwei Personen zur Verfügung, mit Hin- und Rückflug und der Möglichkeit
in einem Hotel nach Wahl zu übernachten, um am
Ort zu erfahren, wie dieser Käse hergestellt wird und
um die Insel Fuerteventura besser kennenzulernen.
Das “Frühstück aus Fuerteventura” begeistert die
spanische Presse
Die Handelskammer von Fuerteventura, die aus
einem Abkommen mit dem Rat für den Käse aus
Fuerteventura und einer Vereinbarung mit dem I.E.S.
Jandia Bereich für Gaststätten- und Beherbergungsgewerbe und Tourismus gegründet worden ist, führt
eine Initiative durch, die aus zahlreichen Verkostungen von Käse mit Herkunftsbezeichnung der Insel
Fuerteventura für die wichtigsten spanischen Medien
mit Standort in Madrid besteht.
Durch das Projekt soll für das Urlaubsziel Fuerteventura durch eines seiner bedeutendsten Produkte, den
Käse von Fuerteventura (Queso Majorero) geworben
werden, der als „Juwel des Atlantik“ gilt, da er immer
noch auf die traditionelle Weise hergestellt wird und

“Soy perfeccionista y necesito que todo lo
que salga de mis manos sea perfecto”
Beatriz nació en Las Palmas pero ha elegido, desde
hace 10 años, Fuerteventura como su residencia habitual y es aquí donde ha desarrollado de nuevo todo
su saber aportando sus conocimientos es diseño,
decoración, y arte floral a su negocio en Gran Tarajal.
Entre sus múltiples facetas laborales, se encuentra
la confección y diseño de vestimentas, pelucas, tocados, coronas, y maquillajes para carnaval. Por este
principal motivo y aprovechando que comienzan los
meses de carnavales en estas islas hemos querido
entrevistarla.
¿Cuándo comenzó a diseñar trajes de carnaval?
Tenia 18 años cuando presenté a la primera reina
en Las Palmas y poco después comenzaba a ocuparme de la murga los “Guanches Picapiedra”, actual
“Filarmónica”, uno de los mejores grupos hoy en día;
también diseñé carrozas, libretos con las canciones,
carteles de anuncio, etc. Hablamos de hace 20 años.
Fui una de las pioneras en las Palmas.
¿Cómo surgen sus ideas para tan fantásticos
trajes?
Siempre recibimos primero el tema sobre lo que
se basará el carnaval, y a partir de ese momento,
mi cabeza da forma a lo que voy a realizar, tanto en
vestuario, peinados, etc., dependiendo de a quien voy
a presentar: una reina infantil o adulta, una murga,
o una comparsa.
Este año el carnaval se basa en el Siglo de Oro y
ya tengo todo preparado para empezar.
Antes nos comentaba que estos trajes y tocados,
no llevan una sola puntada. ¿Puede explicarnos
como se hacen?
Normalmente me contrata el ayuntamiento o la
comparsa o la murga y yo doy los talleres en los que
les enseño a realizar el traje tocado etc., que cada
persona va a llevar. No todo el mundo sabe coser,
por lo cual pegar se convierte en la forma más fácil y
rápida de trabajar en estos diseños. Todo va pegado
con silicona, como además cada persona trabaja en
el que va a llevar, ponen el máximo de esmero por
su propio beneficio.
Durante todo el proceso yo estoy con ellos coordinando cada parte de la elaboración hasta conseguir
el final deseado. Luego el día de la elección del
concurso maquillo a todos y cada uno de los que
presento.
Aparte de todo lo que hemos hablado, en la
actualidad ha incorporado una nueva faceta a su
trabajo relacionado con las bodas, cuéntenos…
Sí me dedico a organizar bodas. Abarcando desde
el peinado y maquillaje de la novia, pasando por los
adornos florales, recuerdos, banquete, cóctel, etc. Me
centro de lleno hasta en los más mínimos detalles,
como por ejemplo la presentación de la tarta, etc.
¿Se encarga igualmente de comuniones, bautizos, etc.?
Sí por supuesto, de cualquier evento social que me
requiera, desde cenas de empresa, presentación y
preparación de regalos, etc.
Desde luego, la presentación de obsequios tiene
más importancia de la que a veces se le da...
Una simple rosa o cualquier pequeño objeto pueden convertirse en un regalo primoroso si se presenta
adecuadamente. Yo soy perfeccionista y necesito
que todo lo que salga de mi trabajo y mis manos sea
perfecto. No importa cuanto sea el presupuesto del
cliente que solicita mi trabajo, yo me adapto: siempre
le sacaré el máximo partido y la mejor imagen.
Los que conocemos su tienda, sabemos que
sus escaparates, siempre variados, presentan
desde preciosos árboles de navidad decorados
con magnifico gusto, objetos de decoración muy
bellos para obsequio, hasta llegar a delicados
adornos florales, tanto naturales como artificiales. ¿Cuál es la especialidad, de tantas facetas
como tiene, con la que más a gusto se siente?
Suelo dar cursos con el programa Prometeo de escaparatismo en los institutos, y a veces he montado
escaparates para otros comercios. También dí cursos
a los empresarios en otro momento y en la actualidad con la Caja de Ahorros estoy dando cursos de
manualidades en los centros de personas mayores.
Cualquier faceta de decoración y diseño me entusiasma pero si tengo que elegir, creo que organizar
bodas es lo que más me gusta y lo que más disfruto,
tanto como el carnaval, pero este sólo es una vez al
año, las bodas la tengo constantemente.
Y por último, ¿cómo consigue hacer tantas cosas,
trabajos, cursos, tienda, familia?
Realmente me multiplico, pero esto no podría ser
sin la ayuda y comprensión de mi familia con la que
cuento siempre.

QUIÉN ES QUIÉN EN LA ISLA / WHO’S WHO IN THE ISLAND? / WER IST WER AUF DER INSEL?
Beatriz Hernández García – Designer and decorator
“I am a perfectionist and I want everything
I do to be perfect”
Beatriz was born in Las Palmas but 10 years ago
she chose Fuerteventura as her main residence and
this is where she developed again all her knowledge
in design, decoration, and floral art in her business
in Gran Tarajal. Amongst her many activities, she is a
clothes confectioner and designer, she makes wigs,
combs, tiaras and carnival makeup. This is the main
reason why we wanted to meet her at the beginning
of the carnival season.
When did you start designing carnival costumes?
I was 18 when I presented the first queen in Las
Palmas and a little later I started taking care of the
Street band called “Guanches Picapiedra”, which is
now called “Filarmónica”, currently one of the best
groups; I also designed floats, flyers with the songs,
advertisements, etc. This was 20 years ago; I was a
pioneer in Las Palmas.
How do you get ideas for such great costumes?
Initially we always receive the theme of the carnival
and from that moment on, my head starts working on
what I am going to create for costumes, combs, etc.,
depending on who I am going to present: a child or
adult queen, a street band or a group.
This year the carnival’s theme is based on The
Spanish Golden Age and I already have prepared
everything and am ready to start.
You were telling us that those costumes and combs don’t have a single stitch. Can you explain how
they are made?
Normally I am contracted by the Ayuntamiento, the
group or street band and I teach them in workshops
how to create the costume that each person will wear.
Not everybody knows how to sew, therefore gluing is
the easiest and quickest way to create the costumes,
etc. Everything is stuck with silicone, and given that
each person works on the costume they will be wearing, they take great care for their own benefit.
During the whole process I am with them to coordinate each part of the elaboration until the end result.
Then on the day of the competition I come and do the
makeup of each person I am presenting.
Apart from those we have talked about, I think
you have now added a new side to your business
regarding weddings; tell us more…
Yes, I now also dedicate myself to weddings. It
starts with the bride’s hairstyle and the makeup and
includes also the floral arrangements, keepsakes,
banquets, cocktails, etc. I take care of everything
including the presentation of the wedding cake, etc.
Can you also take care of communions, baptisms,
etc.?
Yes of course, I can take care of any social event,
from business events, presentation and presents
organisation, etc.
Of course, the presentation of presents is more
important than people tend to think.
A simple rose or any small object can become an
exquisite present if it is presented adequately. I am
a perfectionist and I want everything I create for my
business to be perfect. The size of the client’s budget
does not matter, I adapt: I will always get the best and
end up with the best possible result.
For those of us who know your shop, we know
that your shop window varies a lot, with some
beautifully decorated Christmas trees, lovely
decorative objects that can be converted as
presents, even delicate floral arrangements both
natural and artificial. What is your speciality, you
have so many different facets, which one suits
you the best?
I tend to teach courses within the programme called
“Prometeo de escaparatismo” (learning how to make
shop windows) in institutes and I have sometimes
created shop windows for other businesses. I also
taught businesses and am currently teaching manual courses in Centres for the Elderly with Caja de
Ahorros. I get motivated by anything that is related
to decorating and designing, but if I had to choose I
think that organising weddings is what I prefer and
what I enjoy the most, I like Carnivals but those only
happen once per year, whereas I organise weddings
all year round.
Finally, how do you manage to do so many things,
work, courses, shop, family?
I literally multiply, but I couldn’t do it without the
help and understanding of my family who I can rely
on at all times.

“Ich bin Perfektionistin und möchte, dass
alles, was ich mache, perfekt ist”
Beatriz wurde in Las Palmas geboren, aber sie hat
vor zehn Jahren Fuerteventura als Wohnsitz gewählt.
Hier hat sie ihr Wissen weiterentwickelt und hat
ihre Kenntnisse im Bereich von Design, Dekoration
und Blumenkunst in ihrem Geschäft in Gran Tarajal
gezeigt.
Sie ist sehr vielseitig, unter anderem entwirft und
fertigt sie Kleider, Perücken, Frisuren, Kronen und
Make-up für den Karneval an. Deshalb wollten wir sie
interviewen und nutzten die Gelegenheit, dass bald
die Karnevalszeit anfängt.
Wann haben Sie damit begonnen, Karnevalskostüme zu entwerfen?
Ich war 18 Jahre alt, als ich die erste Königin in
Las Palmas präsentierte. Kurze Zeit später begann
ich, mich um die Murga „Guanches Picapiedra”, die
heutige „Filarmónica”, zu kümmern. Es ist heute eine
der besten Gruppen. Ich habe auch Karnevalswagen,
Liederbücher, Werbeplakate usw. entworfen. Das war
vor 20 Jahren. In Las Palmas war ich eine Pionierin.
Wie kommen Sie auf die Ideen für so tolle Kleider?
Wir bekommen immer zuerst Thema für den jeweiligen Karneval. Dann entstehen sowohl die Kostüme
als auch die Frisuren in meinem Kopf. Das ist davon
abhängig, ob ich eine Kinderkönigin, eine erwachsene
Königin, eine Murga oder eine Komparsin präsentieren werde.
Dieses Jahr basiert der Karneval auf dem goldenen
Zeitalter und ich habe schon alles vorbereitet.
Sie Haben uns vorhin erzählt, dass diese Kostüme
und Frisuren keinen einzigen Nadelstich bekommen. Können Sie uns erklären, wie sie hergestellt
werden?
Normalerweise werde ich von der Gemeinde, von
der Komparsin oder von der Murga engagiert. Ich
gebe Kurse, in denen ich ihnen bei bringe, die Kostüme herzustellen, die sie tragen werden. Nicht alle
können nähen, deshalb ist es leichter und schneller
für sie, die Kostüme zusammenzukleben. Alles wird
mit Silikon geklebt. Da jeder an dem Kostüm arbeitet,
das er selbst tragen wird, sind alle so sorgfältig wie
möglich.
Ich beaufsichtige diesen Prozess und koordiniere
jeden Teil der Herstellung, bis das gewünschte
Ergebnis erreicht wird. Am Tag des Wettbewerbs
schminke ich all diejenigen, die ich präsentiere.
Ich denke, dass Sie inzwischen noch weitere Arbeiten machen, die mit Hochzeiten zu tun haben.
Erzählen Sie uns bitte etwas darüber …
Ja, ich organisiere Hochzeiten. Ich kümmere mich
um die Frisur und die Schminke der Braut, den Blumenschmuck, die Geschenke für die Anwesenden,
das Bankett, den Cocktail usw. Ich achte genau auf
alle Details wie zum Beispiel die Präsentation der
Hochzeitstorte.
Machen Sie auch Kommunionen, Taufen usw.?
Ja, natürlich. Ich mache alle gesellschaftlichen
Events, für die ich engagiert werde, Firmenessen,
Präsentation und Vorbereitung von Geschenken usw.
Die Präsentation der Geschenke ist wichtiger, als
man glaubt.
Aus einer einfachen Rose oder einem jeglichen kleinen Gegenstand kann ein hervorragendes Geschenk
werden, wenn man es richtig präsentiert. Ich bin Perfektionistin und möchte, dass alles was ich mache,
perfekt ist. Es ist nicht wichtig, was für ein Budget
meinem Kunden zur Verfügung steht, ich passe mich
an: Ich werde aus allem das Beste herausholen.
Wer Ihr Geschäft kennt weiß, dass es in Ihrem
Schaufenstern, die ständig anders dekoriert sind,
unter anderem wunderschöne sehr geschmackvolle Weihnachtsbäume, schöne Geschenkobjekte und erlesenen Blumenschmuck gibt, sowohl
natürlichen als auch künstlichen. Was macht
Ihnen unter diesen ganzen Tätigkeiten am meisten Spaß?
Ich gebe Kurse im Rahmen des Prometeo-Programms für Schaufenstergestaltung, und manchmal
habe ich Schaufenster für andere Geschäfte dekoriert. Ich habe früher auch Kurse für Unternehmer
gegeben und zurzeit gebe ich mit der Caja de Ahorros
Bastelkurse in Seniorenzentren.
Mich begeistert alles, was mit Design und Dekoration zu tun hat, aber wenn ich etwas auswählen muss,
glaube ich, dass es mir am meisten Spaß macht,
Hochzeiten zu organisieren, und ich amüsiere mich
dabei genauso wie beim Karneval. Der letztere ist nur
einmal im Jahr, die Hochzeiten dagegen sind ständig.
Zum Schluss möchten wir noch gerne wissen,
wie Sie es schaffen, soviel zu tun, Arbeit, Kurse,
Geschäft, Familie?
Ich vervielfältige mich. Das könnte ich aber nicht
ohne die Hilfe und das Verständnis meinerFamilie,
die immer für mich da ist.

Las playas de Fuerteventura abren FITUR
S.M. el Rey de España, Don Juan Carlos, inauguró
el pasado mes de enero la trigésima edición de Fitur
en el stand de Turespaña, visitando a continuación
los expositores de las Islas Canarias, en el que Fuerteventura ocupaba un lugar destacado dando a conocer
su oferta de ocio, cultura y especialmente la oferta
deportiva asociada a las vacaciones.
Fuerteventura presentó en Fitur 2010, de forma
coordinada con todas las instituciones y entidades
empresariales de la Isla, su oferta turística bajo la
campaña del Patronato de Turismo ‘Acción y deporte
en la Playa de Canarias’, que incluía una veintena de
propuestas asociadas a deportes náuticos, senderismo, ciclismo, golf, etc.

El expositor de Fuerteventura se convirtió además en uno de los centros de atracción de la Feria
gracias a una acción llamada ‘Fuerteventura es la
playa de Canarias’, que se desarrolló contando con
la colaboración de la Escuela Taller de Dinamización
Turística. Esta promoción basaba su reclamo en el
reparto de miles de boletos que recogía la frase
“Entrega este boleto en LA PLAYA DE CANARIAS y
gana un viaje de lujo…” sin especificar el destino
el interés que ha despertado Fuerteventura “en un
Madrid invernal, donde las mejores playas de Canarias relucen por ofrecer calidad y calidez a nuestros
visitantes, de la mano además de una oferta de ocio
de primer nivel”.
Por su parte, Águeda Montelongo, consejera insular de Turismo, destacó “la importancia que tiene
Gregorio Pérez, presidente de la Cámara de Comercio de
Fuerteventura.
al que se refería –tampoco los azafatos y azafatas
lucía la palabra Fuerteventura en sus atuendos, lo
que invitaba a los participantes a buscar y por tanto
a reconocer el stand de Fuerteventura para poder
optar al premio final.
El presidente del Gobierno de Canarias, Paulino
Rivero, colaboró simbólicamente en la campaña rellenando uno de los folletos del sorteo, siendo uno de
los primeros en aportar sus datos entre los cientos
de visitantes que se han acercado al expositor de
Fuerteventura durante toda la mañana para participar en el sorteo.
Mario Cabrera, presidente del Cabildo, subrayó
trabajar todos unidos, empresarios, instituciones
y profesionales, en la promoción de nuestra isla.
Fitur puede ser la puerta de entrada a un año de
recuperación muy importante para el sector turístico
majorero. Las perspectivas son buenas y confiamos
en que paso a paso se vayan confirmando”.

Fuerteventura’s beaches lead FITUR
His Majesty the King of Spain, Don Juan Carlos,
inaugurated last month the thirtieth edition of Fitur at
the stand of Turespaña, and then visited the Canary
Islands’ stands, where Fuerteventura stood out by
showing its offer for leisure, culture and especially
sports activities associated with holidays.
In Fitur 2010 Fuerteventura presented its tourism
offer in coordination with all the island’s institutions
and businesses and within the Tourism Board’s
campaign called “Action and sports on the Beach of
the Canaries”, that included about twenty proposals
associated with nautical sports, hiking, cycling, golfing
activities, etc.
Fuerteventura’s stand became one of the attraction centres of the Fair thanks to an initiative called
Olivia Estévez, al centro en la foto, diputada al Paramento
de Canarias, comparte con otras asistentes.
“Fuerteventura is the beach of the Canaries”, that
was promoted with the collaboration of the Tourism
Development Workshop School. This promotion consisted of handing out thousands of tickets printed
with the slogan “Hand in this ticket on the BEACH OF
THE CANARIES and win a luxury trip…” not specifying
which destination it was referring to – the steward and
stewardess did not display the word Fuerteventura
anywhere either, which meant that participants would
have to look around and recognise Fuerteventura’s
stand in order to enter into the draw for the final prize.
The president of the Canarian Government, Pauline
Rivero, collaborated symbolically in this campaign by
filling in one of the tickets of the draw, and was one
of the first to give his personal details out of hundred
of visitors who came along to Fuerteventura’s stand
during the whole morning in order to participate in
the draw.
Mario Cabrera, president of the Cabildo, pointed
out the interest that Fuerteventura generated “in a
wintery Madrid, where the best beaches of the Canaries are standing out for the quality and warmth they
offer visitors, as well as a first class leisure offer”.
On the other hand, Águeda Montelongo, the island’s
tourism councillor, emphasised about “the importance of working together: businesses, institutions and
professionals to promote our island. Fitur can be the
answer to a very important year of recovery for the
island’s tourism industry. The perspectives are very
positive and we trust that slowly they will materialise”.

Seine Majestät, Don Juan Carlos, König von Spanien eröffnete im vergangenen Januar die dreißigste
Tourismusmesse von Fitur am Stand von Turespaña.
Danach besuchte er die Stände der kanarischen Inseln, unter denen Fuerteventura einen bedeutenden
Platz einnahm, und wo die neuen Angebote in den
Bereichen Freizeit, Kultur und Feriensport vorgestellt
wurden.
Fuerteventura präsentierte 2010, in Koordination
mit allen Institutionen und Unternehmen der Insel,
das touristische Angebot der Insel. Dies geschah im
Gregorio Pérez und Águeda Montelongo.
Rahmen der Kampagne des Patronats für Tourismus
‘Aktion und Sport an den Stränden der Kanaren’, zu
der ungefähr zwanzig Angebote gehörten, die alle
mit Wassersport, Wandern, Radfahren, Golf usw. zu
tun haben.
Der Stand von Fuerteventura wurde außerdem
dank der Aktion „Fuerteventura ist der Strand der
Kanaren“, die zusammen mit der Schule für die Dynamisierung des Tourismus durchgeführt wird, zu einem
der attraktivsten Zentren der Messe. Diese Promotion
basierte auf der Verteilung von tausenden von Losen
mit der Aufschrift „Geben Sie dieses Los am STRAND
DER KANAREN ab und gewinnen Sie eine luxuriöse
Reise …“ Das Reiseziel wurde nicht angegeben, und
keine der Hostessen trug das Wort Fuerteventura auf
ihrer Kleidung. Deshalb mussten die Teilnehmer den
Stand von Fuerteventura suchen und erkennen, um
an der Verlosung teilnehmen zu können.
Der Präsident der Regierung der Kanaren, Paulino
Rivero, unterstützte die Kampagne symbolisch, indem
er einen der Verlosungsscheine ausfüllte. Er war einer
der ersten unter den Hunderten von Besuchern, die
sich dem Stand von Fuerteventura an diesem Vormittag näherten und der seine Daten hinterließ, um
an der Verlosung teilnehmen zu können.
Mario Cabrera, der Präsident des Cabildo, betonte,
dass Fuerteventura „in einem winterlichen Madrid“
auf großes Interesse stieß, “da dort die besten Strände der Kanaren ihre Besucher aufgrund ihrer Qualität
und ihrer Wärme begeistern. Dazu kommt außerdem
ein erstklassiges Freizeitangebot“.
Águeda Montelongo, die Beauftragte für Tourismus, betonte: „Es ist sehr wichtig, dass Unternehmer, Institutionen und Fachleute zusammen für die
Promotion unserer Insel arbeiten. Fitur kann das
Eingangstor zu einem für die Tourismusbranche von
Fuerteventura sehr wichtigen Erholungsjahr sein. Die
Perspektiven sind gut und wir vertrauen darauf, dass
diese nach und nach bestätigt werden.“

En reconocimiento a la labor, actividades e iniciativas que desarrolla el Centro Comercial El Campanario, en Corralejo, el Ayuntamiento de La Oliva
presentará su candidatura al Premio a la Excelencia
Turística que otorga el Gobierno de Canarias.
En nombre del grupo de Gobierno de La Oliva, el
concejal de Turismo, Hannah Souweileh, entregó
recientemente, en el marco de la Feria Internacional
del Turismo 2010 (Fitur), una pequeña escultura a
la empresa AJA Inversiones, propietaria del Centro
Comercial, “en agradecimiento a su valiente apuesta
turística y comercial para convertir el establecimiento
en un importante punto de encuentro para visitantes
y ciudadanos”. Recogieron el premio José Abrahán
Domínguez, presidente de AJA Inversiones, el consejero delegado, Javier Puga Santana, y el gerente,
Juan Antonio Hernández Álvarez.

eine kleine Skulptur „als Dank für seinen mutigen
touristischen und kommerziellen Einsatz, um aus
der Niederlassung einen wichtigen Treffpunkt für
Besucher und Bürger zu machen”. Der Preis wurde
von José Abrahán Domínguez, dem Vorsitzenden von
AJA Inversiones, dem Vorstandsmitglied Javier Puga

El stand de la Consejería de Turismo del Gobierno
de Canarias ganó el premio al mejor stand en la Feria
Internacional de Turismo, que se desarrolló en Madrid
durante el pasado mes de enero.
El stand, que repite el galardón obtenido en la última Word Travel Market, de Londres, fue distinguido
por su originalidad, espectacularidad y funcionalidad.
Canarias ha tenido que competir con stand de mayoristas, turoperadores, agencias de viajes, compa-

ñías de transporte, hostelería, ocio y cultura, turismo
residencial, medios de comunicación, organismos
oficiales españoles y extranjeros, asociaciones de
profesionales, comunidades autónomas y un gran
número de países participantes de cinco continentes.
El stand, con una extensión de casi 2.000 m2,
combinaba composiciones de carpintería artesanal
adaptadas a geometrías contemporáneas, con elementos de carácter vanguardista y novedoso. De este
modo la combinación y el contraste entre acabados
mates y altos brillos le conferían un aspecto de modernidad, creando a la vez un espacio cálido y humano. Asimismo, los materiales aludían a conceptos y
valores de los que goza la oferta turística canaria.
Destacaba también la concepción del espacio
como una unidad en la que se creaba un punto
de encuentro. Además, el stand tenía tres puntos
destacados de atención: una zona dedicada a la
campaña Say no to Winter Blues, otra en la que los
visitantes han tenido amplia información sobre los
cuatro clubes de producto, y una tercera dedicada al
programa de voluntariado.
The stand of the Canarian Government’s Tourism
Council won the prize for best stand in the International Tourism Fair that took place in Madrid in January.
The stand that won the same prize during the last
World Travel Market in London stood out for its originality, splendour and functionality.
The Canary Islands competed against stands of
wholesalers, tour operators, travel agencies, industries of transport, hotel, leisure and culture, rural
tourism, communication Medias, official Spanish and
Foreign associations, autonomous communities and
many countries participating from five continents.
The stand that consisted of almost 2.000 m2,
combined handcrafted carpentry adapted to con-
temporary designs, with avant-garde and original
elements. It meant that the combination and the
contrast between mat and shiny finishes gave the
stand a modern aspect by creating a space that was
both warm and humane. Furthermore, materials reminded of concepts and values of which the Canarian
tourism offer is very rich.
The way in which the space was created to be a
meeting area also stood out. Besides, the stand had
three separate main areas: one dedicated to the
campaign called “Say no to Winter Blues”, another
where visitors could get extensive information about
four product clubs and a third one dedicated to the
volunteering programme.

der Kanaren wurde im Januar in Madrid bei der internationalen Tourismusmesse mit dem ersten Preis
ausgezeichnet.
Der Stand, der auch beim letzten Word Travel
Market in London prämiert wurde, erhielt diese
Auszeichnung aufgrund seiner Originalität, seinem
spektakulären Charakter und seiner Funktionalität.
Die Kanaren konkurrierten mit Ständen von
Engrosshändlern, Reiseveranstaltern, Reisebüros,
Transportunternehmen, Beherbergungs- und Gaststättengewerbe, Freizeit und Kultur, Ferienhaus-Tourismus,
Medien, offiziellen spanischen und ausländischen Einrichtungen, Berufsverbänden, autonomen Regionen
und zahlreichen Länder aus fünf Kontinenten.
Der fast 2.000 m2 große Stand besteht aus einer
Kombination von Kompositionen aus kunsthandwerklicher Tischlerarbeit, die an zeitgenössische
geometrische Formen angepasst sind und avantgardistische und neuartige Elemente aufweisen. Auf
diese Weise erhält er durch die Kombination von
Kontrasten sein modernes Aussehen, aber gleichzeitig entsteht ein warmer und menschlicher Raum.
Auch die Materialien deuten Konzepte und Werte des
kanarischen Tourismusangebotes an.
Auch die Konzipierung des Raumes als Einheit, in
der ein Treffpunkt entsteht, muss erwähnt werden.
Außerdem hat der Stand drei zentrale Orte, die die
Aufmerksamkeit auf sich ziehen: Einen Bereich für die
Kampagne Say no to Winter Blues, einen weiteren,
wo die Besucher über die vier Produktclubs informiert
werden und einen dritten für Voluntariatsprogramme.

Tiempo de Carnaval
Cuando examinamos los distintos calendarios de
los numerosos Carnavales de hoy y de antaño, observamos en las fechas una variedad tan amplia como
en las maneras de celebrarlos. Sin embargo hay unos
denominadores comunes a todos los carnavales: en
cuanto al momento, todos preceden a la Cuaresma
y pretenden ser una preparación para la misma, y un
desquite anticipado de las privaciones que impondrá.
En cuanto a la forma de celebrarlos, todos coinciden en la proliferación de los disfraces; y luego, en
cada lugar se especializan en formas distintas de
sacarle partido a la libertad y al libertinaje que da
el hecho de no poder ser reconocido, y la licencia
consensuada de toda la sociedad para estas celebraciones. De ahí que sean tantísimas las variedades
carnavaleras, y que cada ciudad se distinga por un
estilo y unos ritos distintos, que atraen el interés de
un cada vez más abundante turismo carnavalero.
En cuanto a la fecha de inicio de los Carnavales,
la que durante más tiempo y en más calendarios se
ha mantenido como primer día de celebraciones, es
el jueves anterior al Miércoles de Ceniza, día en que
empieza la Cuaresma, de manera que ésta venía a
durar una semana casi completa. El Jueves Lardero,
que así se llamaba el primer día de los Carnavales,
se celebraba con una buena comilona; y el Miércoles
de Ceniza, el último día de la semana de Carnaval, se
celebraba con la tristeza y austeridad que imponía el
primer día de la Cuaresma, con el rito llamado Entierro de la Sardina, que no era tal, sino el del esqueleto
de la misma, después de haber celebrado la primera
comida cuaresmal, que la austeridad del tiempo y de
la economía hacía que fuese una sardina en salazón.
Es por tanto la Semana de Carnaval la medida más
universal, pero no la única. Por debajo de esta extensión está la más escueta del domingo de Carnaval
(cuyo nombre litúrgico es Domingo de Quincuagésima), el más celebrado por ser día festivo, que se
prolongaba en el lunes y el martes que le seguían,

con menos fiesta por ser días laborables. Y por
encima de la extensión de la semana tenemos una
variedad muy notable, que oscila normalmente en los
carnavales modernos entre el domingo de Sexagésima, la semana anterior, hasta el primer domingo de
Cuaresma (los 40 días de ayuno como preparación
a la Pascua), el que sigue al Miércoles de Ceniza. Es
decir que los Carnavales más solemnes extienden su
duración a dos semanas. Pero no es éste el límite, ni
mucho menos. En las ciudades que tienen los Carnavales como sus festejos más significativos, para los
que han creado una estructura social de cofradías,
gremios, cuadrillas, comparsas, etc. los Carnavales
empiezan mucho antes. En Venecia, por ejemplo,
se proclamaba el 26 de diciembre, el siguiente de
la Navidad, como primer día de los Carnavales. Más
adelantados aún eran en algunas ciudades de Alemania, en que el 11 de noviembre se daba inicio a los
Carnavales con la elección de su rey. A partir de esa
fecha, se iban escalonando celebraciones menores
que culminaban en el Carnaval propiamente dicho.

Carnival time
When we look at calendars of the numerous Carnivals of today and times gone by, we notice that there
are as many differences in dates as there are ways
to celebrate them. However there are some common
points to all carnivals: they all precede Lent, they all
aim to prepare for Lent, and they are a compensation
for the privations it imposes.
Regarding the ways of celebrating them, they all
mean extensive use of disguises; then, each place
has its specific ways to express this freedom and
licentiousness that come with the anonymity of not
being recognisable, and the unanimous approval from
the whole society during those celebrations. Those
varieties in Carnivals, each town preferring a specific style or different rituals is what makes carnival
tourism more and more attractive.
As far as dates are concerned, the start date of
Carnival is the one that in most calendars has prevailed, which is Thursday before Ash Wednesday,
when Lent starts, which means that it almost lasted
a complete week. The first Carnival day used to be
called Fat Thursday, which was celebrated with a
large feast; and Ash Wednesday, the last Carnival
day, was celebrated with the sadness and austerity
imposed by the first day of Lent, with the ritual of the
Sardine’s burial, which was not the actual sardine but
its skeleton, after celebrating the first meal of Lent,
which, because of the time’s austerity and economy,
consisted of one preserved sardine.
One Week of Carnival is therefore quite universal
but not unique. There is also the more discreet Sunday of Carnival, which is celebrated the most because
it is a festive day that used to extend into Monday and
Tuesday, but those two days were celebrated less
because they were working days. In addition to the
extension of one week there are a variety of notable
days that vary in modern Carnivals between Sixtieth
Sunday, the previous week, until the first Sunday of
Lent (the 40 days of fasting in preparation for Easter),
which is after Ash Wednesday. Therefore the most
solemn Carnivals could last two weeks. But this is not
the limit, very far from it. In towns where Carnivals
are their most significant festivities, where they have
created guilds, associations, groups, musical bands,
etc., carnivals start a lot earlier. In Venice for example,
Carnivals used to start on 26th December. In some
German towns they even used to start earlier when
Carnivals started with the election of the Carnival’s
King on 11th November. From then on, smaller celebrations used to follow and ended with the actual
Carnival.
Karnevalszeit
Wenn wir die verschiedenen Kalendertage der
zahlreichen heutigen Karnevalsfeste anschauen,
stellen wir fest, dass es genauso viele verschiedene
Termine gibt wie Arten dieses Fest zu feiern. Alle
Karnevalsfeste haben jedoch einen gemeinsamen
Ausgangspunkt: Alle gehen der Fastenzeit voraus
und beabsichtigen, auf diese vorzubereiten und
gleichzeitig eine vorgezogene Entschädigungen für
die folgenden Entbehrungen zu sein.
Was die Art zu feiern betrifft, haben überall die
Verkleidungen eine große Bedeutung; aber allerorts
gibt es besondere Formen, um die Freiheit und die Libertinage auszudrücken, die man dadurch bekommt,
dass man nicht erkannt werden kann sowie die Zustimmung der ganzen Gesellschaft zu diesem Fest. Nun
gibt es zahlreiche Varianten des Karnevals und jede
Stadt zeichnet sich durch einen eigenen Stil und besondere Rituale aus, welche die Aufmerksamkeit des
zunehmenden Karneval- Tourismus auf sich ziehen.
Das Anfangsdatum des Karnevals, das über die
längste Zeit und in den meisten Kalendern angegeben wird, ist der Donnerstag vor Aschermittwoch,
der Tag, an dem die Fastenzeit beginnt, so dass der
Karneval dieser fast eine Woche dauert. Der erste
Tag der Karnevalsfeste wurde als fetter Donnerstag
bezeichnet und mit einer großen Fresserei gefeiert.
Am Aschermittwoch dagegen, dem letzten Tag der
Karnevalswoche, wurde mit der Traurigkeit und
Strenge, die vom ersten Tag der Fastenzeit auferlegt
wurden, das Ritual gefeiert, das man Beerdigung
der Sardine nannte. Dort wurde allerdings nur das
Skelett von diesem Fisch beerdigt, nachdem die erste
Fastenmalzeit stattgefunden hatte, die aufgrund der
Härte der Zeit und der finanziellen Bedingungen aus
einer gepökelten Sardine bestand.
Die Karnevalswoche ist folglich die universelle
Maßeinheit, sie ist jedoch nicht die einzige. Hinter
der Verlängerung steht die schlichtere Form des
Karnevalssonntag (dessen liturgischer Name die
Quinquagesima ist). Dies ist der Tag, der am häufigsten gefeiert wird, da er ein Feiertag ist. Er wurde
durch den Montag und den Dienstag der folgenden
Woche verlängert. An diesen Tagen wurde jedoch we-
niger gefeiert, weil es Werktage sind. Und außer der
Verlängerung der Woche haben wir noch ein bemerkenswertes Merkmal: Die modernen Karnevalsfeste
finden normalerweise zwischen dem Sonntag der
Sexagesima, der Woche davor, bis zum ersten Sonntag der Fastenzeit statt (die 40 Tage Fastenzeit, die
auf Ostern vorbereitet), auf die der Aschermittwoch
folgt. Das heißt, dass die feierlichsten Karnevalsfeste
ihre Dauer auf zwei Wochen erweitern. Aber dies ist
auf keinen Fall eine Einschränkung. In den Städten,
deren bedeutendstes Fest der Karneval ist, und die
eine dazugehörige soziale Struktur mit Bruderschaften, Berufsständen, Quadrillen, Maskengruppen
usw. haben, beginnen die Karnevalsfeste früher.
Zum Beispiel in Venedig wurde der Karneval am 26.
Dezember, dem Tag nach Weihnachten eröffnet. In
einigen Städten in Deutschland begann der Karneval
sogar noch früher. Er wurde am 11. November durch
die Wahl des Königs eröffnet. Von diesem Tag an
fanden kleinere Feierlichkeiten statt, deren Abschluss
der wahre Karneval war.
Los carnavales
Un carnaval es una celebración pública que tiene
lugar inmediatamente antes de la cuaresma cristiana, con fecha variable (desde finales de enero hasta
principios de marzo según el año), y que combina
algunos elementos como disfraces, desfiles, y fiestas
en la calle. Por extensión se llaman así algunas fiestas
similares en cualquier época del año. A pesar de las
grandes diferencias que su celebración presenta en
el mundo, su característica común es la de ser un
período de permisividad y cierto descontrol.
El carnaval está asociado principalmente con el
catolicismo, y en menor medida con los cristianos
ortodoxos orientales; las culturas protestantes usualmente no celebran el carnaval o tienen tradiciones
modificadas, como el carnaval danés. La celebración
del carnaval más grande del mundo es el Carnaval
de Brasil y la más larga es el Carnaval de Uruguay,
pero muchos otros países tienen importantes celebraciones, como la que se celebra en Italia, en el
Carnaval de Venecia.
Los etnólogos encuentran en el carnaval elementos
supervivientes de antiguas fiestas y culturas, como
la fiesta de invierno (Saturnalia), las celebraciones
dionisíacas griegas y romanas (Bacanales), las fiestas
andinas prehispánicas y las culturas afroamericanas.
Algunos autores consideran que para la sociedad
rural, fuertemente estructurada por el cristianismo,
el tiempo de «carnestolendas» ofrecía mascaradas
rituales de raíz pagana y un lapso de permisividad
que se oponía a la represión de la sexualidad y a la
severa formalidad litúrgica de la Cuaresma.
Canarias
Durante los carnavales que se celebran en las distintas islas de Canarias, miles de personas salen a la
calle durante más de una semana. La fiesta cuenta
con murgas, comparsas, grupos de disfraces, etc.
celebrándose distintos concursos como la Gala de
Elección de la Reina. Los carnavales se celebran en
todas las islas.

A carnival is a public celebration that takes place
immediately before Lent, its dates can vary (between
end of January until the beginning of March according to the year), and it combines elements such as
disguises, parades and street parties. By association,
other similar celebrations happening at other periods
of the year are also called Carnivals. Despite the great
differences of how it is celebrated all over the world,
its common characteristics are that it is a time for
permissiveness and some kind of chaos.
Carnival is mainly associated with Catholicism, and
on a lower level with Oriental Orthodox Christians;
Protestant cultures don’t usually celebrate Carnival
nor have different type of traditions, such as the
Danish Carnival. The largest Carnival celebration in
the world is the Carnival of Brazil and the longest one
is the Carnival of Uruguay, but many other countries
also have important celebrations such as Italy with
the Carnival of Venice.
Ethnologists have found in Carnivals some elements that have survived from ancient celebrations
and cultures, such as the Winter celebrations (Saturnalia), Greek and Roman celebrations of Dionysus
(Bacanales), Andean pre-Hispanic celebrations and
Afro-American cultures. Some authors consider that
for the rural society, which was strongly structured by
Christianity, Carnivals give the opportunity of ritual
celebrations where people can hide behind masks
and a phase of permissiveness that is the opposite
Carnivals

Canaries
During the Carnivals that are celebrated in the various Canary Islands, thousands of people come out
in the streets for over a week. Celebrations include

Auch in vielen anderen Ländern finden wichtige Karnevalsfeste statt, zum Beispiel in Italien der Karneval
von Venedig.
Die Ethnologen finden im Karneval einige überlieferte Elemente alter Feste und Kulturen, wie dem Winterfest (Saturnalia), den griechischen und römischen
Weinfesten zu Ehren des Dionisos bzw.Bacchus, den
Festen in den Anden vor der Kolonialisierung und denen der afroamerikanischen Kulturen. Einige Autoren
meinen, dass die Zeit der „Carnestolendas“ für die
ländliche Gesellschaft, die stark vom Christentum
geprägt war, rituelle Masken heidnischen Ursprungs
bot und eine Zeit der Freizügigkeit war, die sich der
sexuellen Repression und der strengen liturgischen
Förmlichkeit der Fastenzeit widersetzte.
Kanaren
Während des Karnevals, der auf den verschiedenen
Inseln gefeiert wird, ziehen tausende von Personen
mehr als eine Woche lang durch die Straßen. Zu
dem Fest gehören Musikantengruppen, Komparsen,
verkleidete Gruppen usw. Außerdem finden verschiedene Karnevalswettbewerbe statt, zu denen die Gala
der Wahl der Königin gehört. Der Karneval wird auf
allen Inseln gefeiert.

Se puede acceder a las grutas caminando sobre las rocas y mejor aún
nadando para poder contemplar sus
paisajes interiores, cuando el mar está
en calma. El Mirador, desde el que se
aprecia un paisaje fuerte de rocas mar
abierto con una vista de la pequeña playa del pueblecito típico de pescadores.
De camino hacia Ajuy, encontramos el
precioso valle de la Vega de Río Palma
y con el Santuario de la Virgen de la
Peña, patrona de la Isla, al que acuden
en masiva romería los peregrinos en el
mes de septiembre, y el Barranco de
las Peñitas donde se recoge el agua de
lluvia de forma natural.

swimming there in order to be able to
admire the interior of the caves. From
the Mirador you will have the best view
of the cliffs, the sea and the small
beach of this tiny typical fishing village.
On the way to Ajuy, you will go through
the magnificent valley of Vega de Rio
Palma where you can visit the «Virgen
de la Peña» Sanctuary, patron saint of
the Island. This is where many pilgrims
come during the month of September,
as well as at the Barranco de la Peñitas
where the rain water gets accumulated naturally.

“Cuando termino un trabajo vivo dos alegrías”
Con motivo de la exposición “Hombres” que se está
celebrando en la señorial y restaurada Casa de los
Coroneles hasta el 20 de marzo de este año, hemos
entrevistado al artista Peter Wehr.
En la exposición se presentan tres grupos de obras
diferentes, con unos cien trabajos en todos los formatos y técnicas y de tres periodos diferentes.
El primer grupo de obras “hombres, la tecnología y
la desgracia” corresponde a finales de los años 50.
Las pinturas al pastel y los dibujos corresponden a
los años 80 con el subtitulo de “gestos y cuerpos
típicos de hombres” y el tercer grupo, con el nombre
de “hombres místicos, hombres míticos” es el más
reciente y actúa como si en este grupo el artista
intentara buscar una respuesta al segundo grupo.
Peter Wehr nació en Lübeck cerca de Hamburgo,
en Alemania, y comenzó a visitar Fuerteventura ya en
1974; recuerda muy bien como era entonces la isla.
Ya por el año 89 decidió comprar una antigua finca en
Lajares y convertir este lugar en su segunda residencia donde pasa los duros meses de otoño e invierno
de su país y regresa a Hamburgo, en primavera, tras
una parada obligada en Madrid para disfrutar de la
feria de Arco y de los numerosos eventos culturales
de la capital de España ofrece en esa época.
Peter, ¿por qué escogió Fuerteventura como
segunda residencia?
Me encantó su calma, su paisaje y su luz. Yo
necesito estas tres cosas para desarrollar mi parte
más creativa y sentirme bien y en forma. La escasa
población que tenía la isla a mi llegada, era perfecta,
aunque esto ya ha ido cambiando un poco.
¿Desde cuándo se dedica a la pintura?
Yo estudié en la escuela de arte de Stuttgart con diez y siete años, ¡era
mi deseo ser artista!, pero mis padres me hicieron comprender la realidad:
era imposible vivir del arte en los años cincuenta en mi país. Después me
especialicé en diseño gráfico y en este campo desarrollé logros importantes.
A partir del año 63, trabaje con mucho éxito como artista grafico e independiente lo que me permitió vivir bien, aunque siempre seguía en mi cabeza
la idea de pintar. Nunca dejé de trabajar en los libros de bocetos.
Luego al término de mi carrera de grafista me hice cargo de la gran exposición Bauhaus en Stuttgart junto a Herbert Bayer.
¿La que dio la vuelta al mundo, verdad?
Sí, primero se fue a Londres, luego a Tokio etc. Poco después me llamaron
de la Escuela Técnica Superior de Hamburgo donde ejercí como profesor.
¿Cuando trabaja tiene una idea precisa sobre el aspecto que debe
tener al final?
Tal como trabajo con estos materiales tengo que saber lo que quiero, porque no hay posibilidades de corrección; esto supone una gran concentración
pues casi no hago croquis y el azar es mi compañero en este proceso. Cuando
termino un trabajo vivo dos alegrías; por un lado haber desarrollado la idea
del cuadro y también haber trabajado con el maestro azar.
En la última parte de su obra toca aspectos místicos ¿Por qué?
Es que no puedo entender de este mundo de hombres la desmesurada
codicia, la agresividad que no se calma y esa impulsividad que tantos males
acarrea.
Y por fin ahora con su jubilación se ha podido dedicar a pintar…

“When I complete a project I get two kinds
of happiness”
Within the context of the “Hombres” exhibition organised in the newly restored “Casa de los Coroneles”
until the 20th March this year, we met the artist Peter
Wehr for an interview.
The exhibition consists of three kinds of creations
with about 100 creations of all kinds and techniques
and from three different eras.
The first group called “hombres, technología y
desgracia” (men, technology and misfortune) corresponds to the end of the 50’s. The pastel paintings and
drawings correspond to the 80’s and are subtitled
“gestos y cuerpos típicos de hombres” (typical gestures and bodies of men) and the third group called
“hombres místicos, hombres míticos” (mystic men
and mythical men) is the most recent and seems to
be an answer to the second group.
Peter Wehr was born in Lübeck close to Hamburg
in Germany and started visiting Fuerteventura back
in 1974; he remembers well what the island used to
be like then.
And in 1989 he decided to buy an old farmhouse in
Lajares and converted it into his second home where
he would spend the hard German Autumn and Winter
months and go back to Hamburg in Spring after a
compulsory stop in Madrid to enjoy the Arco fair and
numerous cultural events that the Spanish capital
has to offer at that time of the year.
Peter, why did you choose Fuerteventura as your
second residence?
I really enjoy its tranquillity, landscapes and light. I
need those three elements to develop my creativity
and to feel good and in shape. The scarce population
that used to live on the island when I arrived was
perfect, although that has changed a little.
When did you start dedicating yourself to painting?
I studied in Stuttgart’s art school from the age of
17. I wanted to be an artist! But my parents made me
realise the reality of things: it was impossible to live
from art in the 50’s in my country. I later specialised
as a graphic designer where I accomplished a lot.
From 1963, I started being a successful independent graphic designer which allowed me to live well
although the idea of painting was still in the back of
my mind. I never stopped working on sketch books.
Later, towards the end of my graphic designer
career, I organised the great Bauhaus exhibition in
Stuttgart with Herbert Bayer.
Is this the one that went around the world?
Yes it is; it first went to London, then in Tokyo, etc.
Very soon after I was contacted by The Superior Technical School from Hamburg where I started teaching.
When you work, do you have a precise idea of the
painting’s final aspect?
Because of the way I work and the materials I use,
I need to know what I want because there is no way
I can make amendments; it means a lot of concentration as I hardly make any sketches and luck is my
partner in this process. When I complete a project I get
two kinds of happiness; the first is to have developed
the painting’s idea and the second is to have worked
with Lady Luck.
Your latest creations deal with mystical aspects,
why is that?
It is because I can’t understand the excessive greed
of men in this world, the aggressiveness that never
calms down and the impulsiveness that leads to so
many disasters.
And now that you are retired you have finally been
able to dedicate yourself to painting…
I have had to earn my freedom and independence
to do what I always wanted to do: paint.

Wir interviewten Peter Wehr anlässlich der Ausstellung „Hombres“ (Männer), die gerade in dem restaurierten Herrenhaus Casa de los Coroneles gezeigt
wird und bis zum 20. März diesen Jahres zugänglich
sein wird.
In der Ausstellung werden drei große Werkgruppen
präsentiert, zu denen ungefähr hundert Arbeiten in
allen Größen und Techniken gehören.
Die erste Werkgruppe „Männer, Technik und das
Unheil ” entstand Ende der 50-er Jahre. Die Pastelle
und Zeichnungen sind in den 80er Jahren entstanden
und heißen „typische Gesten und Körper von Männern“. Die dritte Gruppe heißt „mystische Männer,
mythologische Männer”. Es ist die jüngste Gruppe
seiner Arbeiten, und es scheint, dass der Künstler in
ihr eine Antwort auf die Fragen der zweiten Gruppe
sucht.
Peter Wehr wurde in Lübeck, in der Nähe von
Hamburg, in Deutschland geboren und begann
1974 Fuerteventura zu besuchen. Er erinnert sich
noch sehr gut daran, wie die Insel damals war. 1989
beschloss er eine alte Finca in Lajares zu kaufen und
seinen Zweitwohnsitz daraus zu machen, um dort
den Herbst und den Winter zu verbringen, da dies
in seiner Heimat harte Monate sind, und im Frühling
nach Hamburg zurück zu kehren. Auf dem Rückweg
macht er einen obligatorischen Stopp in Madrid, um
die Feria de Arco und die zahlreichen kulturellen
Events der spanischen Hauptstadt zu genießen.
Peter, warum haben Sie Fuerteventura als Zweitwohnsitz gewählt?
Mich begeisterten die Ruhe, die Landschaft und
das Licht dieser Insel. Ich brauche diese drei Dinge,
um den kreativsten Teil von mir selbst zu entwickeln
und mich wohl und fit zu fühlen. Als ich hier ankam,
war die Bevölkerung der Insel noch nicht sehr groß,
das war perfekt, aber das hat sich nach und nach
etwas geändert.
Seit wann widmen Sie sich der Malerei?
Ich habe als siebzehnjähriger an der Kunstschule
von Stuttgart studiert. Ich wollte Künstler werden,
aber meine Eltern brachten mich dazu, die Realität zu verstehen: In den fünfziger Jahren war es in
meinem Land unmöglich, von der Kunst zu leben.
Dann habe ich mich auf Graphik spezialisiert und in
diesem Bereich habe ich viel erreicht. Ab 1963 hatte
ich viel Erfolg als unabhängiger graphischer Künstler
und konnte gut von meiner Arbeit leben, obwohl ich
noch immer den Wunsch hatte zu malen. Ich habe
nie aufgehört, mit den Skizzenbüchern zu arbeiten.
Als ich mit meiner Arbeit als Graphiker aufhörte
übernahm ich zusammen mit Herbert Bayer die
Verantwortung für die große Bauhaus-Ausstellung
in Stuttgart.
Die ist viel in der Welt herumgekommen. Stimmt
das?
Ja, zuerst ging sie nach London, dann nach Tokio
usw. Kurze Zeit später wurde ich an die technische
Hochschule in Hamburg berufen, wo ich als Professor
tätig war.
Haben Sie, wenn Sie an einem Werk arbeiten,
eine genaue Vorstellung, wie es am Ende aussehen soll?
Da ich mit diesen Materialien arbeite, muss ich
wissen was ich will, denn man kann nichts korrigieren.
Bei dieser Arbeit muss man sich sehr konzentrieren,
da ich fast keine Entwürfe mache. Bei diesem Prozess
ist der Zufall meine Gefährte. Wenn ich eine Arbeit
fertig stelle, erlebe ich eine doppelte Freude, eine weil
ich die Idee für das Bild entwickelt und eine, weil ich
mit dem Meister Zufall zusammen gearbeitet habe.
Der letzte Teil Ihres Werkes beschäftigt sich mit
mystischen Fragen, warum?
Ich kann auf dieser Welt der Männer die maßlose Gewinnsucht, die nicht zur Ruhe zu bringende
Aggressivität nicht verstehen und auch nicht diese
Impulsivität, die so viel Schaden erzeugt.
Und jetzt, wo Sie im Ruhestand sind, können Sie
sich endlich der Malerei widmen …
Ich musste mir meine Freiheit und Unabhängigkeit
verdienen, um das zu tun, was ich schon immer
wollte: malen.

El jueves lardero
En la sociedad occidental que ya no se plantea
cómo se las compondrá para matar el hambre, sino
qué tiene que hacer para darle al paladar y al estómago todos los gustos, pero sin engordar por ello,
cuesta entender lo afanosos que anduvieron nuestros
antepasados tras la comida, y la importancia que
tuvo ésta para ellos.
Hemos olvidado ya que cuando hablamos de
Cuaresma (palabra de cuyo significado son cada vez
menos los que pueden dar cuenta), nos referimos a
una institución que tenía que ver con el comer, más
concretamente con el no comer, haciendo virtud de
una necesidad, y sobre todo haciéndosela padecer
a los que vivían en la abundancia, e igualándolos de
ese modo con los pobres.
La propia celebración del Carnaval, fuese cual
fuese el origen remoto de la palabra y de la fiesta,
se convirtió en la fiesta de despedida de la carne. De
ahí que se procurase gozar de ella todo lo posible en
esos días; no sólo porque iban a seguir 40 días en
los que la religión les iba a prohibir catar la carne,
sino también para desquitarse de los largos ayunos
de carne que la pobreza les imponía durante todo el
año. Los términos carnestolendas (carnes que han
de ser quitadas) y carnestoltas (carnes que han sido
quitadas) nos hablan bien a las claras de cómo ha
sido entendido el Carnaval por nuestra cultura. Y bien,
entrando en la materia prima de la fiesta, que era la
carne, se instituyó en la versión de extensión media
del Carnaval (la de una semana), el Jueves Lardero,
inventado ni más ni menos que para iniciar solemnemente la tanda de días en que había que aprovechar
para hartarse de carne, a fin de no echarla en falta
durante la inminente Cuaresma.
Lardero es un adjetivo procedente del antiguo lardo,
que es el tocino o gordo (que así se llama también
el sebo o manteca del animal), es decir, la grasa.
No perdamos de vista que al fin y al cabo se refiere
a la parte menos valiosa del animal, con la que sin
embargo nuestras abuelas eran capaces de hacer
auténticas maravillas culinarias. Procede del latín
lardum o lardium, palabra con la que los romanos
denominaban el tocino y la manteca de cerdo. Ahora
bien, el significado usual de tocino es el de carne
gorda (con grasa) del cerdo; carne en fin de cuentas,
con lo que vino a ser sinónimo de carne de cerdo. Y
esto era lo que en especial caracterizaba al Jueves
Lardero, el abundante consumo de esta carne o de
sus productos secundarios. Fue típica de este día,
por ejemplo, la tortilla de chicharrones, que la comían en el campo, sobre todo los niños que iban a la
escuela, para los que éste era un día de gran fiesta,
en el que además empezaban a lucir sus disfraces.
Pero éste no es más que el último reducto de una
fiesta que tuvo mejores tiempos. En sus momentos
de esplendor, se veían por las calles y en especial por
los mercados, e iban de casa en casa, las primeras
comparsas del Carnaval, pidiendo carne o lo que
buenamente pudieran dar, para celebrar esta comida.
Ésta llegó a arraigarse e institucionalizarse de tal
modo que en muchos lugares era costumbre que en
este día el dueño de la fábrica o del taller les pagase
a los trabajadores una comida a base de cerdo. En
torno a ella se celebraban los primeros combates
entre carniceros y pescaderos y los primeros bailes
y rúas de Carnaval.

Fat Thursday
In Western society, where it is no longer a case of
fighting hunger, but more about pleasing taste buds
and the stomach with a variety of tastes, without
putting weight on, it is hard to imagine how laborious
a task it was for our ancestors to get food and how
important it was for them.
We have forgotten that when we speak about Lent
(word which fewer and fewer people know the meaning of), we refer to an institution that was related
to food, or more precisely to “not eating food”, making
a virtue out of a necessity, and mainly making those
who lived in abundance suffer from it and making
them equal to the poor.
The actual Carnival celebration, whatever the
origins of the word and the celebration may be, was
converted into the meat farewell celebration. Therefore it is a case of enjoying it as much as possible
during those days not only because 40 days would
follow when religion would prohibit meat but also
to compensate for the large periods of fasting that
poverty imposed all year round. This is how the word
Shrovetide (meat that has to be taken away) says
very clearly how Carnival should be understood by
our culture. Regarding the raw material of the celebration, which was meat, the extended version of
the Carnival was introduced (of one week), and Fat
Thursday was invented purely to start solemnly the
period when people had to take the opportunity to
gorge themselves with meat, in order not to miss it
during Lent that was soon to come.
The word Fat refers to lard, or the fatty, greasy
part of the animal. Let’s not forget that all in all it
refers to the least valuable part of the animal, which
our grandmothers used to make authentic culinary
feasts with. It comes from the Latin word “lardum” or
“lardium” that Romans used to employ for pork fat.
This is what was so special about Fat Thursday: the
abundant consumption of this fatty pork meat and its
derivates. A typical dish was fried crackling omelette
that people used to eat in the countryside, especially
school children, as this was a great celebration day,
when they would start wearing their disguises. But this
is merely the small remaining part of a celebration
that used to be a lot grander. During its splendour,
in the streets and especially in the markets, the
first Carnival singers’ groups would go from house
to house, asking for meat or anything that people
could give away in order to have a celebrating meal.
It then started to establish and institutionalise itself
in such a way that in quite a few villages it was the
custom for factory or workshop owners to offer their
employees a pork-based meal. Around this time they
also used to celebrate with the first fights between
butchers and fish mongers and the first dances and
parades of Carnival.
Der fette Donnerstag
Die abendländische Gesellschaft fragt sich nicht
mehr, wie sie den Hunger bekämpfen kann, sondern
was sie tun muss, um den Geschmack von allen zu
befriedigen, ohne dass diese dadurch zunehmen. Es
ist schwer zu begreifen, wie mühsam es für unsere
Vorfahren war, sich genügend Lebensmittel zu verschaffen und welche Bedeutung diese für sie hatten.
Wir haben schon vergessen, dass wir uns, wenn wir
von der Fastenzeit sprechen (es gibt immer weniger
Menschen, die wissen, was dieses Wort bedeutet),
auf eine Tradition beziehen, die mit dem Essen, genauer gesagt mit dem Nicht-Essen zu tun hatte. So
machte man aus der Not eine Tugend, die vor allem
von den Reichen ausgeübt werden musste, wodurch
diese den Armen gleichgestellt wurden.
Das Faschingsfest selbst, egal welchen weit zurück
liegenden Ursprung das Wort und das Fest haben,
wurde zum Fest der Verabschiedung des Fleisches.
Man bemühte sich, in diesen Tagen alles zu genießen;
nicht nur weil 40 Tage folgen sollten, in denen die
Religion ihnen verbot Fleisch zu essen, sondern auch,
um die Leute für das lange Fasten ohne Fleisch zu
entschädigen, das die Armut ihnen das ganze Jahr
über aufzwang. Die Begriffe Carnestolenda (Fleisch,
das entfernt werden muss) und Carnestolta (Fleisch,
das entfernt wurde) übermitteln uns eindeutig wie
der Karneval von unserer Kultur verstanden wurde.
Und nun zum wichtigstem Bestandteil des Festes,
dem Fleisch. In der Version des Karnevals mit der
durchschnittlichen Dauer von einer Woche, wurde
der fette Donnerstag eingeführt, den man als offiziellen Anfang für die Tage erfunden hatte, die man
ausnutzen musste, um Fleisch anzusetzen und so
die unmittelbare bevorstehenden Fastenzeit gut zu
überstehen.
Das Adjektiv lardero (Anmerkung: die spanische
Bezeichnung für fetter Donnerstag ist „jueves lardero“), stammt von dem alten Wort lardo (dick, fett) aber
dieses Wort wird auch für den Talg und das Fett des
Tieres benutzt, das heißt, das Fett. Wir sollten nicht
vergessen, dass dies eigentlich der billigste Teil des
Tieres ist, aus denen unserer Großmütter jedoch in
der Lage waren, wirklich wunderbare Gerichte herzus-
tellen. Es kommt vom lateinischen Wort lardum oder
lardium, ein Wort, das die Römer für den Speck und
das Fett des Schweins verwendeten. Die übliche Bedeutung des Wortes tocino ist fettes Fleisch (mit Fett)
des Schweins; Das Wort Fleisch wurde schließlich ein
Synonym für Schweinefleisch. Und genau dadurch
zeichnete sich der fette Donnerstag aus: durch den
reichlichen Verzehr von Fleisch und Fleischprodukten.
Ein typisches Gericht dieser Tage war zum Beispiel die
Tortilla aus Röstfleisch, die auf dem Land vor allem
von Schulkindern gegessen wurde, für die dieser Tag
ein großes Fest war, bei dem sie außerdem begannen
sich zu verkleiden. Aber dies ist nur der letzte Überrest
eines Festes, das schon bessere Zeiten gekannt hat.
In den besten Zeiten sah man die Feierndene auf den
Straßen und vor allem auf den Märkten. Die ersten
Karnevalsgruppen gingen von Haus zu Haus und
baten um Fleisch oder das, was man ihnen gab, um
dieses Essen zu feiern. Dieser Brauch schlug Wurzeln
und wurde institutionalisiert, so dass es an vielen
Orten an diesem Tag üblich war, dass der Besitzer
der Fabrik oder der Werkstatt den Arbeitern ein Essen
aus Schweinefleisch bezahlte. In diesem Rahmen
fanden die ersten Kämpfe zwischen Metzgern und
Fischhändlern sowie die ersten Faschingstänze und
Strassenfeste statt.

Los fervores del carnaval
Hay un hilo conductor que une el mes de febrero (en
latín februarius) con los Carnavales, con la Cuaresma
y con los ritos de purificación. Y nada tendría de extraño que la fiebre también tuviera que ver con febrero,
mes que a pesar del frío es de gran efervescencia.
Los carnavales, ¡mira por dónde! son un residuo de
los tremendos esfuerzos que hizo la humanidad por
convertir la higiene en un hábito. El primer paso fue
convertirla en rito. Que los desfiles de las carrozas
carnavalescas (el carrus navale que convive en armonía con el carne vale, adiós carne) son herederas de
las procesiones que hacían los dioses romanos en
sus carrozas alegradas por los danzantes que iban
sobre ellas, honrando al tiempo que inspeccionando
los campos y los corrales resplandecientes después
de la limpieza a fondo que se hacía una vez al año,
precisamente en el mes de la limpieza, en febrero.
La Cuaresma (los carnavales son su preludio pagano) y el Ramadán empiezan ambos con la febril
limpieza de la casa. La coincidencia en el ayuno y la
limpieza con la cultura árabe, es resultado del largo
contacto de ambas culturas sobre todo en España.
Estamos de cualquier manera en ritos que pretenden
imponer de forma festiva la higiene y la limpieza; que
ha costado muchos siglos llegar a los niveles de que
gozamos actualmente. La humanidad tuvo que sufrir
cantidad enorme de pestes y otras epidemias causadas sobre todo por los bajísimos niveles higiénicos.
Pero si llamativo es el gran esfuerzo realizado por la
humanidad para avanzar en estas virtudes de limpieza externa tan necesarias para satisfacer la primera
de las necesidades, la salud, y de paso avanzar en la
calidad de vida; más llamativo es aún el empeño por
llevar esa purificación cuerpo adentro y hasta el fondo
del espíritu mediante el ayuno. Es sorprendente sin
embargo que mientras manifestamos un encomiable
respeto por el Ramadán y podamos incluso presumir
de tener del mismo un cierto conocimiento de causa,
nos dé en cambio por lucir un desprecio manifiesto
por la Cuaresma y por presumir de la más absoluta
ignorancia respecto a la misma. Son fenómenos que
trae consigo nuestro nivel de ilustración.
El ayuno es, según los fundamentos de todas las
religiones, una pieza más del complejo de actividades
y actitudes de purificación, uno más de los ritos de
penitencia, llamada en griego metanóesis, cambio
de mente. Es que hasta las filosofías laicas entendieron que las tripas delgadas son el mejor medio
para adelgazar el espíritu y afinar el pensamiento.
Y para obtener los grandes objetivos culturales, los
indispensables cambios de mentalidad y de actitud
(que son el objetivo último de toda penitencia y de
todo sistema penitenciario), los ayunos y las privaciones ayudan mucho más que una vida regalada. No
le estaba nada mal a un objetivo tan importante, un
pórtico como el carnaval.

Carnival fervours
February (februarius in Latin) is linked with Carnivals, Lent and purification rituals. And it would not be
surprising if fever had something to do with February,
a month which, despite the cold, is synonym of great
effervescence.
Carnivals are the results of the tremendous efforts
that humanity has made to convert hygiene into a
habit. The first phase was to convert it into a ritual.
The floats’ parades are an inheritance from the Roman God’s processions on floats where dances were
organised for animation; they were honouring the
times when they used to inspect the gleaming fields
and corrals after they had been thoroughly cleaned
once per year, exactly during the cleaning month, in
February.
Lent (carnivals are its Pagan prelude) and Ramadan
both start with the hectic house cleaning. The coincidence of the fast and the cleaning in the Arab culture
is the result of the contact between both cultures,
especially in Spain. In any case we are dealing with
a ritual that aims at imposing hygiene and cleaning
in a festive manner, which took centuries to get to
its current level of entertainment. Humanity has had
to endure enormous amounts of plagues and other
epidemics caused mainly by extremely low hygiene
levels.
But as attractive as humanity’s great efforts may be
to move forward with those virtues of external cleanliness which is indispensible to achieve the first of all
necessities, health, and therefore get better quality
of life; the efforts to bring this cleanliness inside our
bodies until the depths of our souls thanks to fasting
is even more attractive. It is surprising however that
we show an exemplary respect for Ramadan and we
presume that it also comes with the knowledge of its
history, whereas Lent is obviously disregarded and
one can assume that its history is completely ignored.
Fasting is, according to the bases of all religions,
one of the complex purification actions and behaviours, one of the penance rituals, called in Greek
metanóesis, change of mind. Even the secular philosophers agreed that slim bodies are the best way to
lift spirits and thoughts. And in order to reach great
cultural goals, indispensible changes in mentalities
and behaviours (which are the ultimate objective of
all prison systems), fasting and deprivations help a
lot more than a comfortable life. It was therefore quite
appropriate for such an important objective to have
the carnival as its portico.

Die inbrust des Karnevals
Es gibt einen Leitfaden, der den Monat Februar (auf
Latein februarius) mit dem Karneval, der Fastenzeit
und den Purifikations-Ritualen verbindet. Es wäre
nicht erstaunlich, wenn auch das Fieberetwas mit
dem Februar zu tun hätte, einem Monat, der der Kälte
zum trotz voller Aufregungen ist.
Dies ist der Karneval! Er ist ein Überbleibsel der zahlreichen Bemühungen der Menschheit, die Hygiene
zur Gewohnheit zu machen. Der erste Schritt war es,
ein Ritual aus ihr zu machen. Die Karnevalsumzüge
sind ein Überbleibsel der Prozessionen, die die römischen Götter in ihren Wagen machten und die durch
die Tänzer, die darin mitfuhren, erheitert wurden (der
carrus navale lebt harmonisch mit dem Karneval, der
Verabschiedung des Fleisches, zusammen). Auf diese
Weise wurden die strahlenden Felder und Höfe nach
einer gründlichen, jährlichen Reinigung, gleichzeitig
geehrt und überprüft. Dies geschah im Februar, dem
Monat der Reinigung.
Die Fastenzeit (deren heidnisches Vorspiel der
Karneval ist) und der Ramadan beginnen beide mit
einem hektischen Hausputz. Die Tatsache, dass in
der christlichen und in der arabischen Kultur die
Fastenzeit und die Reinigung zusammentreffen,
entstand aus dem Kontakt beider Kulturen vor allem
in Spanien. Hier handelt es sich auf jeden Fall um
Rituale, mit denen beabsichtigt wird die Hygiene und
den Hausputz in Form eines Festes aufzuerlegen;
Es wurden viele Jahrhunderte gebraucht, um den
heutigen Sauberkeitsgrad zu erreichen. Die Menschheit musste zahlreiche Pestausbrüche und andere
Epidemien erleiden, die vor allem durch mangelnde
Hygiene erzeugt wurden.
Es fällt auf, dass die Menschheit sich große Mühe
gegeben hat, um diese Tugend der Reinigung voranzutreiben, die so notwendig ist, um die wichtigste der
grundlegenden Bedürfnisse, nämlich die Gesundheit,
zu erhalten und gleichzeitig die Lebensqualität zu verbessern. Noch mehr Aufsehen erregt die Bemühung,
diese Reinigung auch mit dem eigenen Körper zu
betreiben und dafür sogar zu fasten. Es ist überraschend, dass wir, während wir unseren Respekt vor
dem Ramadan zum Ausdruck bringen und sogar
damit prahlen können, dass wir auch einiges darüber
wissen, andererseits die Fastenzeit verachten und so
gut wie gar nichts darüber wissen. Diese Phänomene
haben mit unserem Bildungsniveau zu tun.
Das Fasten ist nach den Grundsätzen aller Religionen ein weiterer Teil des Komplexes von Aktivitäten
und Einstellungen, die mit Reinigung zu tun haben.
Dies ist ein weiteres Büßer-Ritual, das auf Griechisch
(metanóesis), Änderung des Geistes, heißt. Sogar
die weltlichen Philosophien haben verstanden, dass
leere Bäuche das beste Mittel sind, um den Geist zu
reinigen und das Denken zu verfeinern und um diese
großen kulturellen Ziele zu erreichen. Die notwendige
Änderungen unserer Mentalität und Einstellung (die
der Zweck jeder Buße und jedes Bußsystems sind)
helfen wesentlich mehr dabei, dieses Ziel unserer
Kultur zu erreichen als ein geordnetes Leben. Der
Karneval war keineswegs eine schlechte Einrichtung
für einen so wichtigen Zweck.

El alcalde y la consejera de Turismo visitaron la Escuela Taller de
dinamización Turística
El pasado mes de enero, los coordinadores y
alumnos de la “Escuela Taller Dinamización Turística
Centro Sur” recibieron la visita de la consejera de
Turismo, Águeda Montelongo, el alcalde del Ayuntamiento de Antigua, Gustavo Berriel, y la concejal de
Turismo del municipio Dolores González García.
La concejal de Turismo, González García mostraba
su satisfacción junto con el equipo coordinador de la
Escuela, “por haber sido aceptada la propuesta que
desde la concejalía de Turismo de Antigua se realizó
en su día al Cabildo insular, permitiendo a estos 30
alumnos formados en idiomas, rutas de senderismo,
prácticas deportivas, oferta de alojamiento y ocio, que
fueran los encargados de promocionar Fuerteventura
durante el desarrollo de la Feria Internacional de
Turismo, Fitur, que se desarrolló en Madrid, desde
el 20 al 24 de enero”.
El Ayuntamiento de Antigua es promotor de la Escuela Taller de Dinamización Turística Mancomunidad
Centro Sur, y colabora en su desarrollo cediendo las
instalaciones del Centro Cultural de Triquivijate donde
se vienen impartiendo las clases.
La Escuela forma parte de un Proyecto de Formación subvencionado por el Servicio Canario de Empleo
y dirigido a jóvenes en situación de desempleo, con
edades comprendidas entre dieciséis y veinticuatro
años, residentes en los municipios de Antigua, Betancuria, Pájara y Tuineje.
The mayor and the Tourism councillor visit the Tourism Development
School Workshop
In January, the coordinators and students of the
“Centre South Tourism Development School Workshop” received the visit from the Tourism councillor,
Águeda Montelongo, Antigua’s Ayuntamiento’s Mayor,
Gustavo Berriel and the Municipality’s Tourism Councillor, Dolores González García.
The Tourism Councillor, Dolores González García,
showed her satisfaction to the School’s coordinator’s
team, “for Antigua’s Tourism Council’s proposal to
have been accepted by the Island’s Cabildo, permitting 30 students to receive training in foreign
languages, hiking routes, sports, accommodation and
leisure offer, who also promoted Fuerteventura during
the International Tourism Festival, Fitur, that took
place in Madrid between 20th and 24th January”.
Antigua’s Ayuntamiento is the promoter of the Centre South Tourism Development School Workshop,
and collaborates for its development by providing
premises in the Cultural Centre of Triquivijate where
the classes have been taking place.
The school is part of a Training Programme that
is funded by the Canarian Employment Service and
which is aimed at unemployed young people aged
between sixteen and twenty four, who are residents
in the municipalities of Antigua, Betancuria, Pájara
and Tuineje.

des Tourismus
Die Koordinatoren und die Schüler der „Schule für
die Dynamisierung des Tourismus Zentrum-Süden”
bekamen im Januar Besuch von der Beauftragten für
Tourismus, Águeda Montelongo, dem Bürgermeister
von Antigua, Gustavo Berriel, und der Beauftragten für
Tourismus der Gemeinde, Dolores González García.
Die Beauftragte für Tourismus, González García und
die Koordinatoren der Schule brachten ihre Zufriedenheit darüber zum Ausdruck, „dass das Konzept
akzeptiert wurde, welches das Amt für Tourismus
damals für den Cabildo der Insel entworfen hatte
und infolgedessen diese 30 Schüler Kenntnisse über
Sprachen, Wanderwege, Sportarten, das Angebot an
Unterkünften und über das Freizeitangebot erwerben
konnten. Sie bekamen den Auftrag, bei der internationalen Tourismusmesse Fitur, die vom 20. bis zum
24. Januar in Madrid stattfand, für Fuerteventura zu
werben”.
Die Gemeinde von Antigua fördert die Ausbildungsschule für die Dynamisierung des Tourismus
in der Zweckgemeinschaft Zentrum Süden und

From Wednesday 13th January the analogue TV
signal emission stopped in El Castillo, Salinas del
Carmen and the Golf Courses situated in the hotel
area of Caleta de Fuste, as the new Terrestrial Digital
Television signal (TDT) started being emitted. The
habitants of those areas must therefore change the
orientation of their TV antennas towards the installations situated on Montaña Blanca in El Castillo in
order to receive an adequate and quality TDT signal.
From now on, the area’s habitants from Salinas
del Carmen and El Castillo will benefit from quality
picture and sound thanks to the new TDT signal that
increases the amount of channels on offer, contents
in original version with integrated subtitles, some
interactive services or information about the programmes that are available.

diesem Zeitpunkt gibt es das neue TDT-Fernsehsignal,
weshalb die Anwohner ihre Fernsehantennen in
Richtung der Installationen von Montaña Blanca in
El Castillo umorientieren müssen, um das richtige
TDT-Signal empfangen zu können.
Von nun an werden die Anwohner des Gebietes
zwischen Salinas del Carmen und El Castillo auch

A partir del pasado miércoles 13 de enero se procedió al cese de la emisión analógica de la señal de TV
en El Castillo, Salinas del Carmen, y los dos campos
de golf situados en la zona hotelera de Caleta de
Fuste, comenzando a emitirse a partir de esta fecha
la nueva señal Televisión Digital Terrestre, TDT, por lo
que los vecinos de estas localidades deben reorientar
sus antenas de televisión hacia las instalaciones ubicadas en Montaña Blanca en El Castillo para recibir
una señal adecuada y de calidad de la señal TDT.
A partir de ahora, los vecinos de la zona que
comprende desde Salinas del Carmen a El Castillo
podrán también disfrutar de una imagen y sonido de
calidad, beneficiándose de la nueva señal TDT que
aumenta la oferta de canales, contenidos en versión
original con subtítulos integrados, e incluye servicios
interactivos o información sobre los programas que
se pueden visionar.

Empleo, podrán optar a las plazas de instructor,
entrenador o monitor deportivo que el Ayuntamiento
precisa durante el transcurso del año en las escuelas
deportivas ya existentes, o nuevas prácticas que se
originen.
El curso ha consistido en 324 horas lectivas, en su
mayoría prácticas realizadas en el Pabellón municipal
de Antigua, obteniendo los alumnos la formación
necesaria para ejercer como monitores deportivos,

organizar encuentros o competiciones, realizar funciones como entrenadores de equipos de baloncesto,
fútbol, voleibol, o alguna de las prácticas deportivas
que actualmente ofrecen las 32 escuelas deportivas
que dispone el municipio.
End of the Working Course for
Sports Instructors
The Course reached its objective of recycling the
training of unemployed people, mainly from the
building trade, providing an alternative and practical
working option.
All 13 students received an official certificate as
Sports Instructors from the Canarian Employment
Service. They will be able to apply for instructors or
coach positions that the Ayuntamiento opens up
during the year in existing sports schools or for new
courses that will be created.
The course consisted of 324 hours, mainly practise
carried out in Antigua’s Municipal Hall, which provided
the necessary training to the students which will allow
them to work as sports’ instructors, organise encounters, become basketball, football, volleyball team
coach or for any of the activities that are practised in
the 32 sports schools in the municipality.

Das mit diesem Kurs beabsichtigte Ziel, arbeitslosen Arbeitnehmern eine Neuorientierung zu vermitteln, wurde erreicht. Die Teilnehmer, die vor allem aus
dem Bauwesen kamen, erhielten eine Ausbildung,
durch die sie eine neue Arbeit finden können.
Die 13 Schüler erhielten ein offizielles Diplom als
Sportlehrer des kanarischen Dienstes für Beschäftigung. Sie können sich um die Stellen als Sportlehrer
oder Trainer bewerben, die die Gemeinde im Laufe
des Jahres für die schon bestehenden und neuen
Sportschulen ausschreiben wird.
Der Kurs bestand aus 324 Unterrichtsstunden, von
denen die Mehrheit im Gemeindepavillon von Antigua
stattfand. Die Schüler bekamen die notwendige Ausbildung, um als Sportlehrer zu arbeiten, Treffen und
Wettbewerbe zu organisieren und die Mannschaften
für Basketball, Fußball, Volleyball und andere Sportarten zu trainieren, die heute in 32 Sportschulen der
Gemeinde angeboten werden.

Los Reyes Magos recorrieron sobre sus majestuosos camellos las calles de las localidades de Caleta
de Fuste y Antigua la noche del 5 de enero, acom-
pañados de una Comitiva Real de pajes, ayudantes,
la Batucada Achimencey y la Banda de Música Gran
Canaria.
Al término de las Cabalgatas los pajes ofrecieron a
niños, niñas, madres, padres, vecinos y familiares una
chocolatada para entrar en calor mientras esperaban
el momento en el que Baltasar, Gaspar o Melchor
recogieran personalmente la Carta con los regalos y
deseos que cada uno les quisiera pedir.
La Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos de Antigua comenzó en el Durazno recorriendo la carretera de El
Barrio, las calles Tinguaro, San Francisco, Alcalde
Montesdeoca Cabrera y finalizando en la Casa del
Portón.
En Caleta de Fuste sus Majestades iniciaron la
visita al municipio desde el Centro Comercial Monte
Castillo, continuando por la calle San Roque, la avenida Virgen de Antigua, la rotonda de la Carretera
General, la avenida de El Castillo, las calles Alcalde
Juan Évora Suárez, y Manuel Velázquez Cabrera, y la
avenida Juan Ramón Soto Morales, hasta llegar a la
Tenencia de Alcaldía.
Hundred of requests from children were replied to by the Three
Kings
The Three Kings went around on their majestic
camels in the streets of Caleta de Fuste and Antigua
during the night of 5th January, accompanied by a
Royal delegation of pages, helpers, the Batucada
Achimencey and the Gran Canaria Music Band.
At the end of the procession the pages offered
children, parents, neighbours and families some
hot chocolate to warm up while they were waiting for
Balthazar, Caspar and Melchior to pick up personally
the Letter with the children’s wish list.
The Three Kings’ procession in Antigua started at
the Durazno and carried on in the streets of El Barrio, Tinguaro, San Francisco, Alcalde Montesdeoca
Cabrera and finished at Casa del Portón.
In Caleta de Fuste the Kings started their visit with
the Monte Castillo Commercial Centre, and continued
on the street of San Roque, avenue Virgen de Antigua, the roundabout of Carretera General, avenue
El Castillo, streets of Alcalde Juan Évora Suárez, and
Manuel Velázquez Cabrera, and avenue Juan Ramón
Soto Morales, until they reached the Town Hall.

wurde sie von einem königlichen Gefolge begleitet,
das aus Pagen, Helfern, der Batucada Achimencey
und der Musikkapelle Gran Canaria begleiet.
Um Ende des Umzugs boten die Pagen den Jungen, Mädchen, Müttern, Vätern, Anwohnern und
Verwandten eine heiße Schokolade an, während
diese darauf warteten, dass Balthasar, Kaspar und
Melchior persönlich die Briefe entgegen nahmen, in
denen jeder seine Wünsche zum Ausdruck brachte.
Der Umzug der Heiligen Drei Könige von Antigua begann in Durazno und ging durch die Hauptstraße von
El Barrio, die Straßen Calles Tinguaro, San Francisco,
Alcalde Montesdeoca Cabrera bis zur Casa del Portón.

El Encuentro de Jóvenes para
finales de abril y principios del
mes de mayo
El I Encuentro de Jóvenes de Pájara ‘Conóceme
y Respétame’, que estaba previsto celebrar entre
el 14 y el 17 de enero, en el Albergue de Tefía, se
celebrará definitivamente entre el 29 de abril y el 2
de mayo próximo.
Se anima una vez más a los jóvenes de la localidad
para que participen en esta actividad, que no sólo
supone una oportunidad de convivir con otros vecinos
del municipio de similar edad, sino también para
realizar caminatas, hacer ejercicio, recibir formación
sobre el medio natural de la isla y su importancia,
participar en iniciativas deportivas, etc.
Pueden participar personas residentes en el municipio de edades comprendidas entre los 14 y 35
años de edad, está organizada por la Concejalía de
Juventud del Ayuntamiento y en ella colabora la Consejería de Educación y Juventud del Cabildo Insular.
En el marco de este Primer Encuentro, habrá sesiones de proyección de cine, juegos, veladas de karaoke
y mucho más; como caminatas, explicaciones sobre
Fuerteventura como Reserva de la Biosfera, qué es
un espacio protegido, cuál es nuestra flora y fauna,
etcétera.
Quienes deseen tomar parte en esta actividad
pueden retirar la preceptiva inscripción en la Casa
de la Juventud de Morro Jable (de lunes a viernes y
de 10.00 a 13.00 horas y de 17.00 a 20.00 horas),
en el Campo de Lucha de La Lajita (por las tardes en
la oficina del Colectivo Juvenil los Birones), y también
por las tardes en el Centro Cultural Ataitana de Costa
Calma.

The Youth Encounter will happen

The First of Pájara’s Youth Encounter named “Conóceme y Respétame” (Find out about me and respect
me), that was due to take place between 14th and
17th January in Tefía’s Hostel, will actually be celebrated between 29th April and 2nd May.
Once again the youths of the area are invited to participate in this activity that not only is an opportunity
to meet other neighbours of the same age group from
the municipality, but also to go on hikes, exercise, get
information about the Island’s environment and its
importance, participate in sports events, etc.
Residents from the Municipality aged between 14
and 35 years old can participate in this initiative that
is organised by the Ayuntamiento’s Youth Council with
the collaboration of the Education and Youth Council
of the Island’s Cabildo.
For this first encounter, projects will be organised in
sessions such as cinema, games, karaoke and a lot
more; such as hikes, explanations on Fuerteventura
as a Biosphere Reserve, what is a protected space,
what the island’s flora and fauna consists of, etc.

The cultural year in the Majorero municipality starts
with the creation of two interesting workshops, one
for sewing, where one of the subjects will be about
traditional outfits and the other for theatre.

April und Anfang Mai
Das erste Jugendtreffen von Pájara ‘Lerne mich
kennen und respektiere mich’, das ursprünglich vom
14. bis zum 17. Januar in der Jugendherberge von
Tefía stattfinden sollte, wird nun vom 29. April bis
zum 2. Mai stattfinden.
Die Jugendlichen aus diesem Ort werden ein weiteres Mal aufgefordert an dieser Aktivität teilzunehmen,
durch die ihnen nicht nur die Gelegenheit geboten
wird, mit anderen Jugendlichen der Gemeinde zusammen zu leben, sondern auch zu wandern, zu trainieren und Kenntnisse über die Natur der Insel und
deren Bedeutung zu erhalten sowie an sportlichen
Initiativen usw. teilzunehmen.
An diesen Aktivitäten, die vom Amt für Jugend der
Gemeinde und dem Amt für Ausbildung und Jugend
des Cabildos der Insel organisiert werden, können
Gemeindemitglieder im Alter zwischen 14 und 35
Jahren teilnehmen.
Im Rahmen dieses ersten Treffens werden Filmvorführungen, Spiele, Karaoke-Abende und viele weitere
Aktivitäten stattfinden, wie Wanderungen, Vorträge
über das Biosphärenreservat von Fuerteventura,
Naturschutzgebiete, unsere Flora und Fauna usw.
Diejenigen, die an diesen Aktivitäten teilnehmen

El año cultural en el municipio majorero se inicia
con la puesta en marcha de dos atractivos talleres,
uno de costura, en el que, entre otras materias, se
abordará la confección de vestimenta tradicional, y
otro de teatro.
El taller de teatro, que finalizará en el mes de junio,

puntos informativos de la localidad se atendió durante 2009 la demanda de 22.974 visitantes, datos que
reflejan, entre otros aspectos, el acierto que supuso
abrir en julio pasado un servicio de atención al turista
en un céntrico enclave de Costa Calma.
Por nacionalidades, la mayoría de los turistas que
solicitaron información durante 2009 eran residentes en Alemania (10.160), a quienes siguieron los
españoles (7.555), los ingleses (2.955) y los franceses (1.557). El resto, fueron italianos, portugueses,
holandeses y escandinavos, mayormente.
Los turistas requirieron información sobre cultura,
gastronomía, restaurantes, playas, parques naturales y espacios protegidos, senderismo, deportes
náuticos, la red insular de museos, alojamientos,
coches de alquiler, compras, el servicio público de
transportes y otros servicios.
En el año recién terminado se trabajó muy seriamente en la optimización del servicio municipal
de información al turista, lo que queda reflejado
al registrarse un más que sensible incremento en
cuanto a turistas atendidos respecto al año anterior
(sobre un 15%).

Pájara attended almost 23.000 visitors in 2009
The Theatre workshop, which will end in June, will
be animated by Guacimara Gil, a graduate in Drama
Art. On the other hand, the sewing workshop will be
animated by Juana Dolores Montesdeoca, who, apart
from training students on how to elaborate traditional
Canarian outfits, will also teach them various cutting
and confection techniques.
This yearly workshop which consists of four hours
per week, should take place on Mondays and Fridays
in Morro Jable’s Casa de la Cultura. Once the number
of students has been reached, they will set up their
timetable at their convenience.
Näh- und Theaterkurse zum Jahresanfang in Pájara

Den Nähkurs gibt Juana Dolores Montesdeoca, die
den Schülern nicht nur beibringen wird, wie man typische kanarische Trachten herstellt, sondern auch
verschiedene Näh- und Konfektionstechniken.
Der Kurs läuft das ganze Jahr über und wird jede
Woche vier Stunden dauern. Er wird möglicherweise
montags und freitags im Kulturzentrum (Casa de la
Cultura) von Morro Jable stattfinden. Sobald die Teilnehmerzahl feststeht, können die Schüler entscheiden, um wie viel Uhr der Unterricht stattfinden wird.

other aspects, it was a wise decision to open a service of attention to tourists in a central area of Costa
Calma in July.
Amongst the nationalities who asked for information in 2009, 10.160 were German, 7.555 Spanish,
2.955 were English and 1.557 French. The others
were Italian, Portuguese, Dutch and Scandinavian
mostly.
Tourists requested information about culture, gastronomy, restaurants, beaches, natural parks and
protected areas, hiking, nautical sports, the island’s
museum network, accommodation, car hire, shopping, public transports and other public services.
Over the past year very serious work was dedicated
to optimizing the municipal service of tourist information, which shows in the considerable increase in the
number of tourists that were attended compared to
the previous year (about 15%).

Im vergangenen Jahr wurde sehr ernsthaft an der
Optimierung der Information für Touristen in der
Gemeinde gearbeitet, was sich durch einen nicht
gerade geringen Anstieg an beratenen Personen
im Vergleich zum vorherigen Jahr bemerkbar macht
(ungefähr 15%).

de Mayores
Pájara casco contará en breve con un parque
especial en el que los mayores podrán realizar ejercicios para mejorar su estado físico, instalación que
se ubica en la trasera de la sede del Ayuntamiento,
junto al Juzgado de Paz y el parque infantil recién
mejorado gracias al Plan Zapatero.
Esta nueva ubicación es todo un acierto, ya que
este parque para mayores estará en un enclave muy
agradable (cercano a jardines, zonas verdes y una
zona recreativa), en el que podrán hacer ejercicio
mientras sus nietos juegan muy cerca de ellos. Ofrecerá un aliciente para que los mayores trabajen su

In der Altstadt von Pájara wird es bald einen
speziellen Park geben, wo Senioren Übungen machen
können, um fit zu bleiben. Die Anlage wird sich hinter
dem Rathaus befinden, neben dem Friedensgericht
und dem Kinderspielplatz, welcher kürzlich durch den
Plan Zapatero verbessert wurde.
Der Standort ist hervorragend, denn dieser Park für
Senioren wird an einer sehr schönen Stelle angelegt
(in der Nähe von Gärten, Grünräumen), wo die Senioren Übungen machen können während ihre Enkel in
der Nähe spielen. Dies wird ein Anreiz sein, damit die
Senioren an ihrer Agilität arbeiten, für ihre Beweglichkeit kämpfen oder sich bemühen, ihre Elastizität,
Ausdauer und Kraft zu stärken. Die Arbeiten beginnen
mit der Herrichtung des Platzes, wo neun Geräte
aufgestellt werden, die speziell entworfen wurden,
um den Senioren zu helfen, durch gewisse Übungen
ihre Lebensqualität zu verbessern.
Auch das Friedensgericht
Demnächst werden auch die Verbesserungsarbeiten am Friedensgericht durchgeführt, das neben den
Kinderspielplatz und dem Seniorenpark liegt, die ganz
und gar restauriert werden.
Los Reyes Magos de Oriente repartieron ilusión
por toda Pájara, durante las cabalgatas reales que
se celebraron en Toto y Pájara casco, Cardón, Costa
Calma, La Lajita y Morro Jable.
El martes 5 de enero, efectuaron la salida sus
Majestades los Reyes Magos de Oriente desde el
pueblo de Toto, para luego, por el camino tradicional,
llegar a Pájara casco, donde frente a la Iglesia de
Nuestra Señora de Regla, se ofreció una merienda
a los niños y niñas asistentes. A la comitiva real la
acompañarán payasos, zancudos y malabaristas, que
harán las delicias de los más pequeños; quienes se
les ofrecerán regalos.
En Morro Jable, la Gran Cabalgata de los Reyes
Magos de Oriente de Morro Jable partió de la avenida
del Saladar, para discurrir por la avenida Marítima
para luego pasar por las calles céntricas del pueblo.
La comitiva real iba acompañada de payasos, pajes,
malabaristas, zancudos, botafuegos y percusionistas
y despidió la tarde con una merienda pública en la
que a los niños y niñas no les faltaron los dulces ni
el chocolate caliente.
En Costa Calma, Melchor, Gaspar y Baltasar salieron de la zona de la Ataitana del Río, para discurrir
por las calles y avenidas de este núcleo de población.
También hubo malabaristas, zancudos, payasos,
merienda y regalos.
La Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos de Oriente de La

Altstadt von Pájara, Cardón, Costa Calma, La Lajita
und Morro Jable in ganz Pájara für Freude.
Am Dienstag, demden 5. Januar, kamen die Heiligen Drei Könige aus dem Morgenland aus dem Ort
Toto heraus und zogen auf ihrem traditionellen Weg
bis in die Innenstadt von Pájara, wo sie gegenüber
der Kirche Nuestra Señora de Regla ankamen. Dort
gab es eine Vesper für die anwesenden Mädchen und
Jungen. Der königliche Zug wurde von Clowns, Zancudos und Jongleuren begleitet, welche die kleinsten
mit Geschenken erfreuten.
In Morro Jable begann der große Umzug de Heiligen
Drei Könige in der Avenida del Saladar, ging dann
entlang der Strandpromenade und später durch die
zentral gelegenen Straßen der Ortschaft. Das königliche Gefolge wurde von Clowns, Pagen, Jongleuren,
Zancudos, Botafuegos und Trommlern begleitet. Am
Nachmittag verabschiedeten sie sich mit einer Vesper
von den Jungen und Mädchen. Dabei gab es unter
anderem Süßigkeiten und heiße Schokolade.
In Costa Calma brachen Melchior, Kaspar und
Balthasar in der Gegend von Ataitana del Río auf und
zogen durch die Straßen des Ortes. Es gab auch Jongleure, Zancudos, Clowns, eine Vesper und Geschenke.

Platz des Ortes und wurde auch von Cabezudos,
Clowns und Zancudos begleitet. Zum Schluss gab
es eine Vesper und Geschenke für die Teilnehmer.
Work starts in the Elders’ Park
Pájara will soon have a park especially created
for the Elders where they will be able to exercise to
improve their health. This park will be situated behind
the Ayuntamiento close to the Court House and the
Children’s play area that was recently refurbished
thanks to the Plan Zapatero.
This new venue is a great idea as this park for Elders
will be a very pleasant area (close to gardens, green
areas and leisure areas), where people will be able
to exercise while their grandchildren play close by. It
will be an incentive for Elders to work on their agility,
to fight against reduced mobility or make efforts in
increasing their flexibility, resistance and strength.
The initial work consists in preparing the physical
space where the new equipment, especially designed
to help elders make specific exercises to gain a better
quality of life, will be situated.
The Court House also
Soon a complete refurbishment will also be carried out
on Pájara’s Court House, which is situated a few steps
away from the children’s play area and the Elder’s Park.

On Tuesday 5th January, their Majesties the Kings
of the East started their rounds in Toto and followed
the traditional path arriving in Pájara, where children
were given an afternoon snack in front of Nuestra
Señora de Regla church. The Royal delegation was
accompanied by clowns, people on stilts and jugglers
for the delight of the youngest ones as they also got
offered presents.
In Morro Jable the Great Procession of the Three
Kings started from avenida del Saladar and continued
on avenida Marítima and later went on in the central
streets of the village. The royal delegation was accompanied by clowns, pages, people on stilts, jugglers,
fire-eaters and percussionists and the event ended
with a public afternoon snack for children with plenty
of sweets and hot chocolate.
In Costa Calma, Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar
visited the area of Ataitana del Río and went round
the streets and avenues of this village. The procession
also included people on stilts, jugglers, clowns, an
afternoon snack and presents.

con mucho color.
Wellness y bienestar
Los baños y todo su entorno han evolucionado
mucho en los últimos años. Materiales nobles, spas,
duchas con espejos, cromoterapia, jacuzzis y peque-
ños lavabos adaptados a las casas actuales marcan
tendencia. El bienestar se ha convertido en calidad
de vida, y el rincón llamado spa domina la casa.
Baños con gres y granito de colores, grandes bañeras de donde salen todo tipo de burbujas con sólo

Ilumina tu casa
La iluminación en el interior de las casas ha de ser

donde la luz natural es aprovechada al máximo.
Por otra, la iluminación a través de los LED’s, la
tecnología del momento que vienen a sustituir las
lámparas fluorescentes, es ya una tendencia por su
ahorro energético. Su ventaja es que se alimentan
a baja tensión, consumiendo, de esta manera, poca
energía y, por lo tanto, emitiendo poco calor. Además,
los LED aportan un juego de luces de diversos colores muy vistoso que podemos ver en hoteles u otros
establecimientos.
Tecnología: imposible vivir sin ella
Ya hace tiempo que la tecnología se aplica al diseño
del hogar. Pero ahora y en el futuro alcanzarán sus
momentos más álgidos. Con un solo mando podemos
regular la temperatura de nuestra casa estemos
donde estemos para encontrarla confortable cuando
lleguemos a ella.
Las puertas y las cortinas de los salones se abren
y cierran pulsando un botón, de manera que uno mismo puede regular cómo lo quiere. Lo mismo sucede
con las luces de toda la casa, que son autorregulables
y van perdiendo o aumentando su intensidad. Y es
que la comodidad es algo prioritario para tener todo
dispuesto sin que tengamos que levantarnos del sofá.
Diversidad en el exterior
La terraza o jardín dispone de muebles en los
que sentirnos muy a gusto. Éstos se componen de
materiales que soportan todo tipo de condiciones
atmosféricas, pues hemos de pensar que se encuentran en el exterior. Materiales como el plástico
y el policarbonato, además de otros más especiales

Ecology definitely does not rhyme with design. Selfsufficient houses have become the hope for a more

designer are working their hardest to use recycled

solutions or the use of natural products. Those are
the tendencies that are applied all over the house.
Retro shapes
We already know that fashion is cyclic. The same

so that we can get everything as we want it without
needing to get up from the sofa.

is made of materials that can withstand all kinds of
