LE PARC
DES CHANTIERS
WESTERN POINT
OF THE ÎLE DE NANTES
Embraced by the arms of the Loire River, the
Île de Nantes has been part of a rehabilitation
project of great magnitude and in constant
metamorphosis for the past 10 years. Upon
crossing the Loire, you enter a territory devoted
to the culture industry: the Quartier de la
Création, of which the Parc des Chantiers is
the largest public space.
Spread over 13 hectares, it combines heritage
sites (former shipyards), contemporary architecture, and artworks (Estuaire Nantes <> SaintNazaire, Les Machines de l’île...). Since its
opening in 2007, it has served as the perfect
promenade for a stroll or for relaxing.
1.5 km of quays, 2 cranes, and 3 slipways: lifesize testaments of Nantes’ industrial and working-class past.
Right from the 19th century, the western point
of the Île de Nantes, called Prairie-au-Duc,
experienced a rapid boom of industrial growth.
The site offered an ideal location for shipbuilding,
and in the 1950s, at its peak, the Ateliers et
Chantiers de Nantes and the Chantiers Dubigeon
employed up to 8,000 workers. The closure in
1987 of the last production site signalled a true
landmark in Nantes’ industrial, urban, and
political history.
4 gardens, 1 beach, and 1 pontoon over the
Loire: new constructions to rediscover the
river.
Bringing out the site’s heritage, while developing
its cultural vitality, is how the city has chosen
to rehabilitate the area. Supported by the Société
d’Aménagement de l’Ouest Atlantique (SAMOA
– the “West Atlantic Development Company”),
this project was founded on the idea of opening
new public spaces. The reconstruction has
been trusted to the architect-urban planner
and landscape architect Alexandre Chemetoff
(2000-2010), and to Marcel Smets (since July
2010).
The idea is simple: open the site up to its fluvial
heritage, while preserving the traces of its
former industrial activities in order to create an
original and multi-functional space in the heart
of the city.
The existing structures are maintained and
enhanced by new renovations. Landing stages,
promenades on riverbanks, pontoons, and
theme gardens are being developed along the
Loire riverfront. For the Estuaire 2007, the Quai
des Antilles and the Hangar à bananes were
opened to the public for the first time.
Circus school
15 occupants, 18 rings and 1 Grand Elephant:
cultural and sports activities all year long.
Every space naturally finds its vocation, whether
it be for a bike ride or a walk along the quays,
relaxing on the beach by the river, a stroll on
an elephant’s back with Les Machines de l’île,
or a lesson in art history at the Université
permanente…The park allows everyone to come
into contact with the river and estuary during
cultural or sports activities and explore historical
spaces through events and permanent or
temporary activities.
