The marching bands from Clark,

will compete at the Texas State

qualifying in the UIL Area Band

marching bands advanced as
finalists. They were Brandeis,
Clark, O’Connor, Stevens, Taft,
and Warren high schools. The
competition will be held on Tuesday,
Nov. 4, at the Alamodome. This is
the first time in 33 years that the
Clark HS band has advanced to the
state competition, the fourth time
for the Taft HS band, and the fourth

It was United Nations Day but it was also the annual Parade of Nations at Colonies
North ES, home to many refugee and “newcomer” students.
To showcase the cultural diversity of the school, the school held a Parade of Nations,
featuring 31 countries, their flags, and their national anthems.
Of the 735 students at Colonies North, 228 are English Language Learners (ELL) and 144
of those students are refugees. There are 28 identified languages spoken at the school.
The participants paraded around the blacktop to their national anthem while carrying
their country’s flag, much like the opening ceremonies during the Olympics. Following
the parade, all students sang “Together We Can Change the World.”

countries.
It’s Red Ribbon Week in NISD
NISD schools are
celebrating Red Ribbon
Week, Oct. 23-31, with
rallies, parades, and
special events to encourage
children of all ages to stay
drug-free.
Red Ribbon Week has been
celebrated nationwide since
1998, following the murder
of DEA Agent Enrique “Kiki”
Camarena in 1985. Today,
Red Ribbon Week is used to
raise awareness about the
need for alcohol, tobacco,
and other drug and
violence prevention, early
intervention, and treatment
services.

McAndrew students plant
“seeds of character”
As part of
Character
Counts
Week,
and in
conjunction
with their
annual
Bluebonnet
Day,
students at
McAndrew
ES planted
“seeds of character.” The event
was to recognize the importance
of citizenship, building community,
and caring for their environment
and others.
The McAndrew PTA donated Red
River seeds that were thrown out
into the fields surrounding the
school.
“The hope is that when spring
comes next year, the flowers will
bloom just like our character
blooms everyday,” says School
Counselor Sandi Vasquez.

WWII vet visits Howsman ES
Fifth grade students at Howsman
ES welcomed the San Antonio
Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen,
Inc. The program included the
history of the Tuskegee program,
famous black aviators throughout
history, and the character traits
they exemplified to achieve their
successes.
Special guest was Dr. Granville
Coggs, an original Tuskegee
Airman who served in the Black
Army Air Corps from 1943 to
1946. After WWII, he attended
Harvard Medical School and spent close to 40 years in the medical service of the Air
Force Reserves.
