Designed to help prevent severe burns to toddlers, children and other at risk individuals
On January 1, 2015 all new gas fireplaces will be required to come with a protective safety screen
installed. These regulations were enacted in response to the high number of severe burns suffered by
toddlers and children.
The glass of a gas fireplace can reach a temperature of
between 200­315°C in 6 minutes. That sort of
temperature gives 3rd degree burns almost
instantaneously.
A gas fireplace takes an average of 12.3 minutes to cool
down to 100°C and 27 minutes to cool down to 50°C.
A complete cool down can take an hour or more.
Between 1999 and 2009 an estimated 2,000 children
ages 5 and younger have suffered injuries from gas
fireplaces.
The Joshi fireplace screen was designed and built with child safety in mind and can be custom made
to fit any natural gas fireplace. The Joshi puts a safe barrier between the very hot fireplace glass
and your young children. The screen is made from coated wire mesh and allows a safe clearance from
the glass while making it safe to touch*.
This screen features:
Round, screened corners so that young, curious hands do
not get scratched
A safe gap between fireplace glass and screen (we typically
recommend a 6" gap which usually provides enough airflow
to keep the Joshi screen safe to touch but we can
accommodate almost any dimensions)
Sturdy magnets for non­damaging yet strong adhesion to
your gas unit
The Joshi will not detract from the look of your fireplace
* Joshi screens rely on the physical properties of wire mesh to dissipate heat and they must be built to maintain a
minimum 6" gap to ensure proper air circulation which is sufficient for most installations , but "ALL installations
must be properly checked by an adult after a prolonged burning session to ensure SAFETY IS ACHIEVED". Some
installations do not have the required clearance to create a proper gap, in these cases the Joshi screen may become
hot to the touch but in all cases the Joshi screen offers a protective barrier that is less dangerous and much less hot
