POPP Heartbreakers and Footwarmers : Meet our Adoptable Pets
Introducing Cheech—a
stunning kitty! She was
taken in almost 5 years ago
when she was found abandoned in a laundry
room at an apartment complex. Due to a new
baby's allergies, Cheech's current pet parents
have sadly decided she must find a new 'forever'
home. Cheech is very healthy, up-to-date on vaccinations
and has been declawed. She is used to being the only pet
and she also enjoys going outside a bit so she needs a home
where she can be safe in an outdoor situation. In her
current foster home, Cheech lives with other cats and two
dogs, but she would probably do best as the only kitty.
Announcing Bailey—Bailey is a great,
all-American hound dog. His only fault?
He's not a fan of little kids; they make
him nervous and a little grumpy. (Hey,
none of us are perfect! Bad drivers make
me grumpy! How about you?) Bailey has
never nipped at any of the children he
lives around, but he'd be happier in a home without small
children. Bailey is 8 years young, sweet to everyone but
kids, perfectly housetrained, GREAT with other dogs, and
not too concerned with cats. He loves lounging about and
squeaky toys. Ready to commit to a dog, but the thought of
a 15 year commitment scares you? Here's your opportunity
to give a great home to a fantastic dog for hopefully a
number of years.
PO Box 442 Pasco, WA 99301
Meet Lola—a stunning, gentle soul looking for her forever
home. She has been well loved and taken care of since she
was about 8 weeks old, but sometimes life happens and now
her family has to find a new home for her. She is very
smart, gentle, absolutely fantastic with children from
babies on up and loves to walk and run
with her family. She does incredibly well
with small dogs and with a good
introduction appears to be fine with larger
dogs. She has never been around cats, but
with her patient nature and a good dogsavvy cat she should be fine! Could this
beautiful Blue Lady be your new family
member?
Get to know Kenya —This little sweetheart has been
wandering a local neighborhood a long time and has been
loved and cared for by compassionate neighbors. She is now
in POPP's program and is looking for a place of her very
own. Kenya is about 2 years old and is truly as nice as can
be. She is loving, cuddly, enjoys other cats and would make
a wonderful family pet. We are not sure how she would be
around dogs; maybe one that
is cat-friendly would be okay
with her. Kenya has been
spayed, vaccinated
(including rabies), and tested
negative for feline leukemia
and FIV.

Almost everyone has a basic first aid kit
in their home and many have prepared
for a disaster. But what about your
furry family members? Do you have an emergency
preparedness plan for your pets? Do you have pet friendly
first aid supplies on-hand? If not, here are some basic
items to keep on-hand for your pets:

Phone numbers for your veterinarian, emergency
veterinary clinic (547-3577), Animal Poison Control
Center (888-426-4435—this is a for-fee service)

Gauze for wrapping wounds

Nonstick bandages, towels, or strips of clean cloth to
control bleeding or protect wounds

Adhesive tape for bandages for securing gauze wra

Milk of magnesia or activated charcoal to absorb poison

Hydrogen peroxide (3%) to induce vomiting

Digital fever thermometer to check temperature

Eye dropper to give oral treatments or flush wound

Muzzle to cover your pet’s head, only if he or she is not
vomiting

Leash to transport your pet if he or she can walk
without further injury
Remember microchip identification
does not replace the value of a
collar with an ID tag!
Donate a Kuranda Bed
Pet Over Population Prevention (POPP)
www.kuranda.com/donate/6592
Much more comfortable than a concrete floor, these
beds encourage happier, healthier and more relaxed
dogs. They make cleaning a lot easier too. Our goal
is to have a Kuranda Dog Bed for every dog. Please
help us provide them with a good night’s sleep.
PO Box 442 Pasco, WA 99301
Pet parents are also encouraged to create a check list to
help their children, in the event they are dealing with a pet
accident on their own. Preparing your family to respond to
pet emergencies will help reduce panic and increase the
likelihood of a positive outcome.
Always remember any first aid administered to your pet
should be followed by immediate veterinary care. First aid
care is not a substitute for veterinary care, but it may save
your pet’s life until it receives treatment.

We have renamed Nala – to Luna. She is doing
great! She wears her collar every day and she has been
micro chipped. We also had a DNA test done on her to
find out exactly what she was! I would be happy to scan
in the results if you wanted to pass the info on to the
other families who adopted puppies! Most surprising
was – she was listed as an Australian Shepherd mix –
and we found out

Sarge is doing great with us. He is
getting along well and adapting to our
family quite well. He is wearing an ID
tag that has his name and our phone
number. He gets along well with our cat
and enjoys playing with other dogs, we
have lots of playtime and he has recently
discovered the joys that a sprinkler can
bring. We even take trips to the dog
parks occasionally and he does great socially with people
and other dogs. He has become a huge part of our family
and an amazing addition. This is a picture of him
patiently waiting for mommy to feed him breakfast, you
can also see his tag in the picture, it is the camo tag that
may blend in with his coloring but I assure you it is
there. Feel free to
contact me for any more questions.

Hi POPP ~~ My name is Cathy A. and
nearly one year ago (01/28/12 to be
exact) we adopted Ava (now named
Zoey). She is the love of our lives.
Thank You!
Just wanted to let you know that the
kitties, Baxter (Fritz) and Mylo
(Mufasa), are doing great! Here are some
recent pictures for you.
Thank you again for all of
your help. We love them!

Patch is doing really well although he goes by the new
name of Gus. Gus loves it here on our acreage. He has
the run of the place and is outside basically most of the
day. I grow blackberries and when
I'm out in the field he loves to run
among the bushes and try to catch
the mice and rabbits that live out
there. We enrolled him in Puppy
Kindergarten which was more for my
wife and me to teach him the basics
and now he's in Super Puppy which is
the second round of classes. He is

proving to be a pretty smart dog and is really enjoyable
to have around. His favorite thing to do after a long day
of playing is to lie on the couch with us and fall asleep.
Gus is in his forever home, so you can close his file. We
love him to death and there's no way we would ever let
him go. I have a question for you, have you heard from
the other families that adopted from his litter? Did they
all get adopted? He weighed in at 45 lbs last week so
he is growing quickly.
Take care, Dean A.
Peanut Butter is now known
as Skippy. My daughter
thought Peanut Butter was
too long a name and my son
pointed out that all of our
other cats had names that
start with an S. Skippy fits
since it's a brand of peanut
butter. He is fitting in quite
well and we all love him. Our
other cat, Sapphire, is starting to warm to him and our
dog, Opie, loves him. Thank you for our perfect little
friend. Denise
Our family adores Jase (formerly Cosmo). We moved
into our new home in Richland and told our nine year
old son Justin that he could finally get a dog. Because
my sister-in-law, Rebecca, is a huge advocate for
rescuing animals from shelters (and I love her dogs) I
wanted to give adoption a chance. I have been terrified
of dogs my entire life after an incident when I was
young, and I assumed it would be many visits before we
found a dog who was the right fit for our family. I was
wrong. I saw Jase and immediately fell for his brown
eyes and silky soft fur. He is the sweetest dog we've
ever met. He has made lots of dog friends at the dog
park and on frequent walks in the neighborhood. He
has lots of people friends, including our family, lots of
third grade boys who come to play, and his foster
parents and foster grandma who babysit for us when
we're out of town. All of us cherish Jase and feel
incredibly lucky he found us. He is a sweetheart -- he
has no behavioral issues even
though he was
abandoned. Teri at POPP
offered me great
encouragement during the
process. I recommend getting
a dog or cat from POPP, they
are a great organization!

Just wanted to let you know that the
kittens are doing very well. They are
very nearly completely comfortable with
our German Shorthair and have been
exploring the house. So far no accidents
and they immediately have
accepted their scratching post.
They were so tolerant with my
Grandgirls on Sunday when
they came to visit. They sleep
with me in my room and I am
getting pretty much normal
sleep. In short, I'm thoroughly
and completely in love with them both.
I changed Tigers name to Jack because I had
previously owned a kitty with that name and I want
each kitty to have their own identity. So now I have
Walter (Mathau) and Jack (Lemon). The Odd Couple.
Thank you so much for all your help. I feel so fortunate
to have the little fellas.
Nori
Hello POPP,
Snowy (now Eleanor) is doing just
great! She's definitely in her
forever home. We love her! She's
got an ID tag, and we're planning to
have her chipped at the next POPP
microchip clinic.
It took about a month for our cats to
teach her about her boundaries with
them, but now everyone's getting
along pretty well. Other than that,
she dropped into our family
perfectly. She picked up her cues
and learned our routines after just a couple of days. It's
like she's been with us her entire life. She's a
wonderful dog, easygoing and quiet. She's excellent
with our boys (ages 2 and 4). She loves to be with the
family and she loves to ride in the car, so we bring her
along with us whenever we can. She has good manners
and I think someone spent some time training her.
When she came home with us she was thin and her fur
was dirty and matted. She's put on a bit of weight (our
vet thought she needed to gain 5 to 7 lbs) and her fur
has gotten sleek and soft. She's really turned into a
beautiful, happy dog. We're so pleased.
Thanks for checking up on us!
Leona
Hi! Thanks for letting us adopt
Mason! I love him a ton! He is
really fun to play with and really
funny at night. He likes to sleep
with me and I love that! He's a
little sweetie! He loves his toys!
Once again thanks!!!!! I love him!

PET FRIENDS
Spring 2013
Dear POPP Family and Friends,
Just over 3 months ago, our family lost our home
to a fire. Thankfully, Alton, Colton and I made it
out safely. Sadly, our 12 kitties did not
survive. All but one were POPP kitties. Our
POPP family reached out to us with immediate
support and we were so very grateful at a time of
great shock and sadness. Our family would
like to express our heartfelt thanks to all of
you for your prayers, love, kindness, friendship, and generosity shown
to us since this tragedy. Our angel kitties were so loved and such a huge
part of our family. The loss we feel is tremendous. Their faces are forever
engraved on our hearts.
Each of these kitties had a ‘story’ and a personality. Read on for a glimpse
at what special furry babies we were blessed with!
Cheeto – The grandpa of them all and the only one that
wasn’t originally a POPP cat. We adopted him from the
Pasco shelter in July 1998. Daughter Rachel picked him
out and he was the most loving, sweet, boy ever. He
loved being held and wanted nothing more than attention
and lap time. Cheeto was always there to greet us and
we all loved him very much.
Robin - This angel had been rescued from the
Red Robin parking lot just the week before the
fire. He was ready to be adopted. This picture
was taken a few hours before the fire. My heart
hurts thinking of the life he missed out on and
the love he could have given someone.
Oprah – Rosie’s sister. She had a bit of an attitude and
that’s part of what we loved about her. She loved the
outdoors and was quite persistent with her desire to do
what SHE wanted to do. Oprah’s favorite thing in life was
annoying her “siblings”. She really wanted us all to herself
and had no need for her brothers and sisters!
Rosie – Oprah’s sister. She was our talker. She would
carry on a conversation and you would swear she
understood every word you said. She had the cutest
pale pink nose and she was simply precious to us. You
couldn’t help but love Rosie – she was a gem with a
huge heart. Beautiful girl with the sweetest spirit – our
Rosie girl.
Tiger Lilly – “Lilly” for short. Lilly loved
everybody and everybody loved her. She
was the “peacemaker” of the group. She
never grew to more than 6 lbs. and we
lovingly referred to her as “Half Cat.” She
had big beautiful green eyes. A pure
delight who always made us smile. She loved to bask in the sun and have
her tummy rubbed. A perfect angel!
Milo – This handsome orange boy was abandoned as a young kitty. Always
a bit shy, Milo enjoyed attention on his terms. Alton
nicknamed him Jimmy Durante…he had a large (and
speckled) nose. As he grew older, Milo loved to
“talk” and would let us know when he wanted
attention. We had a soft spot for Milo as he was
more of a loner who loved people more than anything
else.
Freeway – Daddy’s boy (along with Angus) and our
“black panther.” He came to us as a very small
kitten after he was found “bouncing” along the side of
a road. He stole our hearts immediately. Freeway
snuggled with Alton whenever he could and they
shared a truly special bond. Freeway also loved our
dog, Megan, and Megan loved him. He was a gentle, happy boy.
Angus – Daddy’s other boy. Angus had an attitude
of “I’m special” from day one of his rescue! He
immediately bonded with Alton and they shared
much lap time. Angus really wanted to explore the
outdoors and enjoyed the cat enclosure probably
more than any of the kitties. Angus was
independent and tough with a soft heart for his daddy.
Sissy – Semi-feral, “Sister” was Hector’s (sole
survivor) best friend. She was afraid of most people
and just wanted to be on my lap when she wasn’t with
Hector. Sissy had a sweet spirit and didn’t ask for
much. She came to us along with her sibling, Sassy,
who died of cancer at age 2.
Magellan - Along with sisters Shilo and Macy, Magellan came
to us as a very young kitten. This trio was destined to be feral
and they were little “hissies” at first. Magellan was the
epitome of a gentle giant. He rarely meowed. He was so soft
and had stunning eyes. His personality was so laid back and
kind and he had such an amazing spirit about him.
Really an exceptional cat and furry friend.
Shilo – Simply beautiful in every way. She had a velvety
soft gorgeous coat. Like brother Magellan and sister
Macy, Shilo was a quiet kitty. She loved to sleep next to
me at night. Her emerald green eyes spoke to you…her
spirit was so sweet and she was so easy to love.
She enjoyed hanging out in the kitty enclosure and
basking in the sun.
Macy – This little girl stole my heart the minute I saw
her. Macy and I had a connection that was so very
special. She had an independent streak in her but
she loved me and treasured our lap time. Macy didn’t have much use for
the other cats; I was the only one she really wanted to
spend time with. Petite, beautiful, and a bit sassy, she
lives on in my heart forever.
One of our furry angels, Hector, shocked us all by
showing up 10 days after the fire! What a miracle to
see him stroll up the sidewalk. We are so thankful that
he was able to escape and was kept safe for the days
following this tragedy. We decided to keep his name
on the urn as one day we will add his ashes to the rest
of his feline family. We hope that is a long way off.
Our hearts remain heavy with sadness over the loss of
these precious pets. In order to cope, we try to think of them as very much
alive and playing, lounging, and enjoying all the beauty and peace of
heaven. They’ve joined many other kitties we’ve loved over the years, as
well as our beloved dogs Misty and Megan. We will all be together again
one day. Words cannot express how thankful we are to each of you for your
outpouring of many kindnesses shown to us. Our family is forever grateful.
God Bless You all.

And the Cupboard Was Bare…by Kristin Manke
It started with that simple phrase. Our pet food supply was running low, and we had
several litters of puppies in foster homes and more coming in. Kristin Manke, Kate
Kenny, and Rachel Sachs sent out a plea for dog and puppy food on our Facebook page.
Nikki Avery and Lori Ashbeck sent an email message out. And, then, it went viral.
Countless people started sharing the request on their Facebook pages and on their email
lists. As Mary Ann Showalter said, “Hungry dogs? Not in my town!”
People asked if they could drop food off early. Atomic City Autobody kindly offered and
said people could drop donations at their place during the week. On Friday, two volunteers
went to get the food. They were expecting a few bags. The food filled a pickup truck.
On Saturday, the food kept pouring in. All day. The Richland Sanitary Landfill folks
dropped by with bags of food and toys for pets in need. One man brought in the food from
his 13-year-old cat who had just passed away, and then wrote us a check with tears in his
eyes. David Hachigian, Amy Cruz, and Lori Horsley-Fricke, among others, working as part
of Team Battelle dropped by with bags of food. The folks from Full Throttle Motorcycle
Accessories came by with donations. It is absolutely impossible for me to say how blessed
and honored I felt to have been a part of it. In three days, we received 7,500 pounds of pet
food and other supplies! Thank you!!
Thank you to all our donors that continue to leave
paw prints on our hearts and enhance the lives of
pets within our program and the community!
