Principal’s Message A Century of Excellence
The end of October and the month of November have been positive for the staff and students at GHS. Via a surprise visit from the Oregon Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction Rob Saxton to an all school assembly, the student body was the first to hear that Mr. Michael Lindblad was named Oregon’s 2015 Teacher of the Year. Mr. Lindblad was chosen because of his strong commitment to equity, very high expectations for all students, and passion for making sure students are globally aware citizens. This is quite the honor for him and us and we are all very proud of his award. At the same assembly we announced that the GHS Theater program was named the best in the northwest by Stage Directions Magazine. There are five regions in the country and this is the first Oregon program to receive the honor. Mrs. Dempsey is also the first female drama director to win the award. Congratulations to Mrs. Dempsey and our outstanding drama students. The Student Council hosted their annual canned food drive to support the w ork Snow Cap does for needy people and families. Students exceeded their goal o f 500 cans (total collected: 750) that forced me to take to the roof o n a cold and rainy Friday to raise $500 in pledges on my own. Administrators, teachers, and some very generous parents from around the district helped me reach my goal by lunchtime! These same student leaders also assembled a number of Thanksgiving food boxes for needy family so that they could enjoy a good meal that weekend. Congratulations to the student leadership and everyone involved. Last but not least, w e are 12 w eeks into the school year. Winter is fast approaching and the days are getting shorter. This time of year is typically the point w hen many students tend to loose the positive momentum with which they started the year. To help bolster that effort we have begun some incentive programs for freshman and visited a large number of classrooms to emphasize the need to stay on track. We will continue these efforts and more but parent and guardian support of our “finish the semester strong” message—particularly attendance and work completion—is much appreciated. The Counseling Office is staying busy! We are currently working on two special projects: Seniors: As we complete our meetings with seniors, they are working on college choices, college applications, and letters of recommendation. Many students now use online applications, and counselors support them through programs such as Common App and SendEdu. Freshmen: Through the PE classes, counselors are meeting with all freshmen to develop their individual four-‐year academic plan. This plan is a graduation requirement. The PE teachers are partnering with us to help students create their plans in CIS—
Career Information System. This work can really help as they forecast for next year’s schedule. Credit Recovery: With just a few weeks left in first semester, we are also assisting students with credit recovery needs as well as fine-‐tuning second semester schedules. To be considered on track to graduate sophomores must have started the beginning of the school year with six credits, juniors with 12 credits, and seniors with 18-‐19. Students with fewer credits must establish a plan to get caught up or they jeopardize their ability to graduate with their class. Counselor Caseloads: A, B, and ELL students: Armando Gonzales 503 674-‐5529 C-‐ F: Megan Chartier 503 674-‐5526 G – L: Gloria Hull 503 674-‐5527 M – R: Susan Fields 503 674-‐5530 S – Z: Re’nice Siefer 503 674-‐5528 College & Career Center News College Application Week (CAW) was a great success with about 90 seniors completing at least one college application. We followed up CAW with hosting a Portland State University -‐ Instant Viking event on 11/21. Twenty students applied and 19 of those were admitted immediately to PSU. Financial Aid Night: December 4th at 7:00 pm we will host Financial Aid Night. Parent and students may come and learn how, when and where to file the Federal application for Student Aid learn about State of Oregon funded aid. There will be sessions in both English and Spanish. If you are unable to make it out to the Financial Aid Night remember that the Federal application is called the FAFSA. The only Federal website available to file the application is atwww.fafsa.gov NOT fafsa.com. This application is free so if a website is charging you a fee ($90 -‐ this year) you are not submitting it to the federal government. The application for the 2015-‐2016 school year will open on January first. Feel free to contact Kendra Maddox if you have any questions regarding Federal Student Aid. ng

College Now Program: There are many classes at GHS that offer students credit here and at Mt. Hood Community College. Students enrolled in the classes listed in the table below can register with the College Now program and, if they pass the class, receive high school and college (dual) credit simultaneously. Keep the following information in mind: • Most students register at GHS while enrolled in the class. • The $35 Mt. Hood registration fee is waived for all GHS students. • The Mt. Hood Credit received does not cost students or families any money. In fact, it saves college tuition money in the future. • Students that receive college credit in high school are much more likely to attend and succeed in college after high school. • Final grades entered on a Mt. Hood transcript are permanent. If a student receives a poor grade here, that same poor grade will be permanently entered on their transcript at Mt. Hood. • If you have questions please ask your student’s teacher or Page 4 Gresham-‐Barlow School District recognizes the diversity and worth of all individuals and groups. Our next meeting is on December 17 at 6:30 pm in the school library. Please join us. Your input is
valued and needed. What is the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program? Gresham High School is the only East County School with a diploma program. In our last newsletter an overview of what the IB program does to build students into world citizens was provided. This article is focused on describing the specifics of how to earn a full IB Diploma. Students that earn this recognition are not only well prepared for most any university program, if they pass the end of course assessments and other requirements can enter be granted two years of university credit thus saving tens of thousands of dollars. The Diploma Program (DP) Core • Extended Essay: Student conduct independent research through deep study of a question connected to a diploma program subject they are studying. A world studies extended essay option allows DP students on a topic with global significance through the lens of two diploma program subjects. • Theory of Knowledge: This class provides a coherent approach to learning that unites the academic disciplines. It is a course on critical thinking that facilitates student inquiry into “knowing” and understanding knowledge as a concept of student construction. • Creativity, action, service (CAS): Students participate in a range of activities alongside their academic studies in the program. Creativity encourages work in the arts and creative thinking, Action is focuses on developing a healthy lifestyle through physical activity. Service provides students with option for new learning with academic value. These three strands provide students Page 6 Gresham-‐Barlow School District recognizes the diversity and worth of all individuals and groups. the opportunity for personal growth through varied experiences they may not have tried otherwise. Full Diploma Curriculum (Description taken verbatim from the IB website.) “IB diploma program students must choose one subject from each of five groups (1 to 5), ensuring breadth of knowledge and understanding in their best language, additional language(s), the social sciences, the experimental sciences and mathematics. Student may choose either an arts subject from group 6, or a second subject from groups 1 to 5. At least three and not more than four subjects are taken at a higher level (240 teaching hours), while the other subjects are taken at standard level (150 teaching hours). Students can study and take examinations, in English, French or Spanish. In addition to disciplinary and interdisciplinary study, the Diploma Program features three core elements that broaden students’ educational experience and challenge them to apply their knowledge and skills.” Each end of course assessment combined with the CAS and Extended Essay earn points. If students earn enough points they are awarded the distinguished IB Diploma. Suffice to say this program is rigorous and rewarding and students that participate find themselves much more prepared for college than their peers. Sophomores and freshman interested in taking IB courses (course can be taken even if students choose not to be a full diploma candidate) should talk to their teacher, IB Coordinator Kathy Childress, or Ed Sage our TOK teacher.
