Dear Fellow
Lifelong Learners,
For 75 years Main Line School Night has provided opportunities to learn new skills, explore
artistic expression, and be a part of a welcoming
learning community. This anniversary is a significant milestone and we thank you for helping us
to get here.
We invite you to join us at our Anniversary celebration on Saturday, September 21st. This party is
a fundraiser for our educational programming and
ongoing maintenance and renovation costs of our
home, the historic Creutzburg Center in Radnor
Township. Additional party details are on the back
inside cover.
In honor of Main Line School Night’s 75th Anniversary, long-time supporters and former teachers,
Arlene Olson and Anne Iskrant, have offered a
Challenge Grant. They will generously match gifts
received by September 21st. What an exciting
opportunity!
This semester will surely inspire you with many
new and engaging classes such as learning about
impressionist artwork, exploring Philadelphia from
Penn’s Landing to Center City, as well as enhancing your financial or business acumen.
I hope you will find a course or two that piques
your interest this fall and that you will be able to
join us at the Anniversary party. Please consider
helping us with an extra gift to reach our Challenge Grant goal, and to support Main Line School
Night’s legacy of “Learning for Life” for the 21st
century and beyond.

Archaeological Journey
Through Romania
Explore the lost world of old Europe
through slide-illustrated lectures highlighting places
of interest and amazing archaeological sites rarely
seen by the public. “Visit” regions of Moldavia, Bukovina, Wallachia and Transylvania. “Travel” through
unique cemeteries. “See” unforgettable painted monasteries which are masterpieces of Byzantine art.
“Wind your way” through the Carpathian mountain
range to the birthplace of the real Count Dracula. Be
surprised by grandiose Gypsy “houses” — an expression of one of the few nomadic cultures still remaining in the world.
Tatiana Young, PhD Candidate, Department
of Archaeology & Anthropology, Temple University
Wednesdays, 9:30 am to 10:30 am, starts 9/18
AA31128 Creutzburg Center . . . . . . . . 4 weeks, $57
archaeology
Archaeology of Athens
While the Parthenon was a cornerstone
of classical Athenian society, it was just one of many
structures that have been uncovered by archaeological excavations in Athens over the past 200 years that
shed light on this ancient society. Illustrated lectures
explore sites which reflect the politics, economics,
religion and culture of the city. Trace the history of
Athens from its origins to its rise to fame and fortune,
followed by its inevitable fall from grace.
Laura Surtees, PhD, Classical &
Near Eastern Archaeology, Bryn Mawr College
Thursdays, 10:15 am to 11:15 am, starts 9/19
AA41127 Creutzburg Center . . . . . . . . 5 weeks, $71

Art in Transition:
Emergence of Modern Themes
Learning to See
Whether you are exploring the arts for the first time
or want to enhance and enrich the knowledge you already have, this course encourages you to recognize
the art in a painting or sculpture rather than simply
looking at the subject or reciting the description.
Appropriate for anyone curious about our objective
approach to the arts.
William Perthes,
Director of Education, Violette de Mazia Foundation
Wednesdays, 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, starts 9/25
AA32170 Creutzburg Center . . . . . . . . 6 weeks, $125
art Impressionists
Icons of Art: Impressionists
& Post Impressionists
Explore the art movements that replaced
the Academy system and permanently changed the
public’s perception of what art is and what the artist
does. Illustrated lectures show how Lautrec, Van
Gogh, Cezanne, Renoir, Valadon, Cassat, Pissaro and
others sought to capture the effects of natural light
on nature while the Post Impressionists moved away
from the naturalism of Impressionism, using experimental styles and techniques. Specific references will
be made to work in Philadelphia collections that “ban
the black” and celebrate light as a subject.
Drew Zimmerman, Professional Artist
Thursdays, 11:15 am to 12:15 pm, starts 10/3
AA41134 Creutzburg Center . . . . . . . . 4 weeks, $57
films on art
Artists on Film
Explore the beauty of the world’s art forms through
film. Enjoy the magnificence of human artistic accomplishments, learn about new (and old) forms of art,
and take an uplifting journey to the soul of creativity.
Watch movies and discover the infinite variety of art
around the globe, and the amazing people who create
such splendor.
Amy Anna, Esq, Artist, Author
Wednesdays, 11:15 am to 12:45 pm, starts 10/9
AA31070 Creutzburg Center . . . . . . . . 6 weeks, $93
Using the paintings of Fernand Leger
(1881-1955) currently on view at the Philadelphia
Museum of Art as a starting point, illustrated lectures
will explore the rise of modern themes in art. Follow
artists of the early 1900’s who expanded the popular
cubist style of painting — breaking the plane of the
canvas into contrasting forms and ideas. As a painter,
sculptor and filmmaker, Leger embraced these new
forms and his bold colors and monumental mechanistic forms are regarded as forerunners of pop art.
Nancy Frankel-Halbert MA,
Professional Artist, Member, Muse Gallery
Mondays, 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm, starts 9/23

Autobiographical Writing
If “living your life is an adventure worthy of any hero,”
writing your life story is finding where you’ve been
and what battles you’ve won. Begin with a few lines,
a poem, a story or a book. Join a group of friendly
writers ready to share insights.

Memoir: Examining the Lives
of Others… and of Ourselves
When you read a memoir, do you find
yourself thinking that you too have a story to tell? If
you answered with an emphatic “yes” or even a tentative “maybe,” join us. The opportunity to tell your
story beckons. Short pieces and excerpts from longer
works such as Calvin Trillin’s About Alice, Richard
Russo’s Elsewhere, and Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird,
serve as a catalyst for you to tell your own story. Work
as a class, in small groups, and on your own.

Contemporary Poetry Workshop:
Reading & Writing
In contemporary poetry, one finds a diverse range of
voices and styles, yet that diversity is created by only
a handful of elements: the rhythm, the line break and
the word. These elements become the tools that
shape poems into more effective pieces to be seen
and heard. Expect to read, write, listen, and even
watch.
