History
architecture
Main Line Architecture:
Inventing the Manorial Suburb
After the Civil War, a new elite residential
landscape grew up around the edges of the city,
populated by the vividly individualized residences of
industrialists and financiers. They decamped by the
modern steam-powered trains outside the city and
hired the best architects to design massive, often
rambling, medieval-style houses. Their venerability
suggested they were intended to last for generations
as family seats; they didn’t, and most are gone.
Follow some of the visual and textual documents
that give a sense of this lost landscape.

Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln and
the Paradox of Greatness
“Greatness” is an honor rarely bestowed. And Abraham Lincoln, until the Civil War, was a highly unlikely
candidate. This sesquicentennial year of the start of
the Civil War is an opportune time to explore how he
was elected without a majority, with the merest of
political, military or administrative experience. His
triumph over personal handicaps tells us much about
the man — and about the Americans who honor him.

Law, equity, mercy, justice — which are

mirror conflicts in the systems of judging that were

Contemporary Poetry Workshop:
Reading & Writing
In contemporary poetry, one finds a diverse range of
voices and styles, yet that diversity is created by only
a handful of elements: the rhythm, the line break and
the word. These elements become the tools that
shape poems into more effective pieces to be seen
and heard. Expect to read, write, listen, even watch,
and of course, workshop. During one class (date TBD),
attend a local poetry reading.
