With the news of Don Vary’s passing
last night, it’s difficult to write anything
Q related without thinking of him. My
best memory of Don is the day we were
in Cedar City, Utah and he led us on an allday ride. Don had been a fishing guide and long-time
outdoorsman in that area of Utah for many years and he
knew the best roads for riding. We were about 10 Goldwings strong on the ride that day and rode all the roads
around the Dixie National Forest and Fishlake National
Forest. Don pointed out where Butch Cassidy hid out in
the canyon and took us to a little restaurant in the middle of nowhere that served “pickle pie.” We rode
through Aspen trees, red rock mountains, arches, and
Robin’s favorites – riding through the green canyon at
Calf Creek and the Hogsback Road where both sides of
the road fall away, both on UT-12. I remember after riding all day and we came to the turn-off heading back to
Cedar City, Don suggested we could go this other road
and keep riding. I’m pretty sure I heard a collective
groan from everyone because after 10 hours in the saddle we were ready to head back to the hotel. I believe
Don could have just gone on for hours more, but we
were all bushed. Other memories of Don, for me, have
to do with his cooking skills. Don was always so quick
to offer to barbecue huge quantities of food for our Q
events and his reputation alone brought many GWRRA
members back each year to our annual event. Even after
he had been diagnosed with his pancreatic cancer he
went on to supervise and help get together massive

amounts of turkey and ham after Thanksgiving at our
Christmas party. And as always, much of the cost for
feeding us came out of Don and Barbara’s generous
pockets. I’ll miss Don at our monthly meetings and at
all our on-going events. He was a good and generous
man.
With those thoughts down let me get on to some
Q business. Planning for our Q Rendezvous is ongoing. Tables and chairs are ordered, permits in place
and the Bates have come up with a good ride for the
event. We are doing the usual visits to local chapters
promoting our event and making every effort to attend
the other chapter’s annual fund raisers. It’s only fair, if
we want them to come to ours, we should go to theirs.
Robin’s kidney stone issues kept us from the Chapter
CA-1I event, but we should be able to get to the others.
The weather is warming up and looks like rain is rarely
going to be an issue so we are looking forward to some
good rides. As always, join us when you can and be
safe out there on our crazy roads.

Assistant Chapter Directors Message
It is with heavy heart that I
write to you this month. We have lost
one of our longest and loved Chapter
Members, Don Vary. Please send your
condolences to his wife Barbara Vary

When I think of Don I would describe him as giving. He loved to cook and he seemed to make sure he
not only stuffed our bellies, but had enough to give forward to those less fortunate than ourselves. Don will be
missed.
I also was informed that our dear friend Woody
Randolph has cancer in one of his kidneys. Our support
goes out to Woody and Debbie. Woody is a fighter and I
have confidence that he can turn the tables and be at the
lake fishing in no time.
Dave Capps has made a great recovery from his
throat cancer, and is back on his bike and riding again.
We have had a few losses in GWRRA and it is a sad
time but also a time that brings us all together and allows us to reflect on the great times we have had. It also
allows us to see the power of our motto "Friends for
Fun, Safety and Knowledge". Moving forward we shall
have our fun times as well as some sad times for loved
ones lost. The knowledge that we are surrounded by
friends and loved ones keeps us in high spirits and endears us to chapter life.
Looking forward to fun times with all of you as I
have had for several years now, and hope to continue
doing so for years to come.

I want to thank everybody that
posted and called me about my passing of the kidney stones, not the first,
but was the worst. Keeping food down and no more pain
medicine since last night. Remember we have great support with our motorcycle chapter, friends and family.
Facebook can be a great pick me up when you see the
support you get from our people. We have a lot of people that have worse problems than we have so keep
praying that their eyes, cancer, or accident injuries get
better. It’s support we get from friends and relatives that
move us forward and in my case, my wife is the best
wife and nurse I could ever have. I love you Deb ! I
love her so much and sometimes we take it for granted.
You never know what's around the corner with the value
of life.
*Editor’s note. When I read this, I asked Woody If I
could reprint this note in our Newsletter. I feel that this
sums up what most of us feel about GWRRA and our
“Q” group. Thank you Woody.

MEMBER ENHANCEMENT
This month we lost a long time
member, Don Vary, he will be missed
by all of us.
The planning for our Q Rendezvous is well under way. There are so
many things to think about when
planning a fun event. The date, the location, the time,
the flyers, the food, the games, the tickets, …..the list
goes on. The location has been picked, the rustic Silverado Canyon. The date and time are complete, April 19th
from 8-11. The flyers are complete, save money and
pre-register. Pick one up at our regular meeting or go
online at http:gwrra-ca1q.org and use your credit card.
You may also register at the Park. We have some great
games planned, the pie eating contest will be included.
We have the tickets for the 50/25/25 and the Grand
Prizes, get more tickets for the same price with preregistration. Pre-Registration ends March 30th.
All in all, this is going to be one fun day. Mark
your calendars and come and join us.
We are having our next Rendezvous planning meeting at 7pm March 13th , at George & Ruth Slomanson's
house.
All are welcome to join in our regular monthly planning meeting on March 6th at 7:30pm at John & Sally
Danforth's house. Hope to see you there.

We call u-turns adventures!!
Don’t you??
Leading a group ride can be tough.
In addition to monitoring the group, the
traffic, the weather, the road conditions
and a myriad of other things, you also
have to endure the good-hearted razzing
that goes along with the inevitable U-Turn. If you were
at this year’s Officer’s Conference in January, you saw
me stand up in front of everyone and announce the 2015
California District Rally was going to be held at the
Marriott in Visalia. Here comes the U-Turn: The Marriott had a minimum requirement of 75 rooms and was
willing to give us those rooms for a rate of $89. When
the actual contract was presented to us to sign, the Marriott was only willing to guarantee the first 75 rooms at
that rate and everyone else would have to pay their regular rate of $119 per night. After several weeks of discussions and the Marriott’s unwillingness to budge on
the matter, Pam and I have decided to move the venue to
another location. In all good conscious, we just could
not create a two tier cost structure that would penalize at
least half of our attendees $100 over the 3 days. We are
in negotiations with the DoubleTree in Bakersfield and
hope to be able to announce a signed contract in just a
few days. I guess it just goes to show that no matter
how well you know the route, you still may end up having to make a U-Turn in order to get where you

want to go.
On another positive note, this year’s Officer’s Conference was an extreme success. For the second year in
a row, we had officers from each of the 22 chapters in
attendance and it was a wonderful opportunity to network and get the latest information out to all of the
chapters.
At CA-1I’s Valentine’s Day run, Chapter CA-1A
was announced as the District Chapter of the Year. Bob
and Nancy Clark as the District Couple of the Year, and
Ken Parmann is this year’s Individual of the Year were
also recognized. Pam and I, on behalf of the entire District Staff would like to extend our congratulations to all
of the winners for a job well done and we know that you
will represent well at the Region Rally!
Please mark your calendars for The Rally in the
Valley, March 27-29, in Mesquite, Nevada. As always
they put on a great rally. Just another reason to get out
and ride, their theme this year is Beach Blanket Wingo!

February Tour Report
If you missed the ride along the
Malibu coast and into the Santa Monica
Mountains, you missed an incredible day. We had two
groups of bikes/trikes leave the Black Bear diner after
February's meeting. It was slightly overcast as we made
our way to Santa Monica. When we came out of the
tunnel onto the Pacific Coast Highway we had beautiful
blue skies. The traffic was light and all in all a perfect
day for a ride.
I can't decide which I enjoyed more - the ride
along the coast or the inland section which goes through
a scenic valley of horse ranches and mansions called
Hidden Valley. We had awesome curvy roads and outstanding views it seemed around every corner.
After March's meeting we will be heading to the
Bates Nut Farm (no relation sadly), meeting up with two
other chapters for a picnic lunch. In April we will do a
pre-ride of the route which will be offered at our Rendezvous. This takes us through beautiful Santiago Canyon.

Hello Q Members,
Last month’s meeting
we discussed Rider Awareness. It is so important that when you step over that seat
to take a ride that you are aware of your surroundings.
While out on the highway we need to be especially
aware of what is happening all around us at all times
and that in itself becomes very difficult. Keeping your
head on a swivel not only is very hard to maintain but
our attention span becomes very short and we drift into
the music on the radio or maybe some of us will be talking to our co-rider and not paying attention to the road
and what's happening around us and that's when it happens. We need to constantly watch what's coming across
the highway from not only the next lane over but we
want to be aware of the traffic that is moving from the
slow lane and making their way over toward us. These
are the sneaky ones. Another surprise area is from the
rear. I can't count how many times that I've been caught
unaware of very fast moving traffic coming up from behind me, whether it be another motorcycle that zooms
by at what seems 100 mph, or the fact we don't look into
the rear view mirror to see what's coming up from the
rear. This is where we could very easily get caught in a
bad situation. So stay aware of the
traffic around you and drive safely and
defensibly.

Bonehead for January
Just when you thought he was out
of the loop, Tom Del Mar rises again
to win our Bonehead for the month of
February. Tom was at chapter I's rally
and not only forgot what his number
was, even though it was on a band
taped around his wrist, he also forgot
how to get home. The largest problem
with that is he was using his Tom Tom and asked it to
"Go Home" and he still went the wrong way on the 10
freeway. Good job Tom and welcome back to the ranks
of our Boneheads.
