Richard III, one of Shakespeare’s great historical plays,
depicts the Machiavellian rise to power and subsequent
short reign of a dynasty’s last king. The play features one of
Shakespeare’s most compelling villains as well as some of his
most wonderful language. Add in scenes of romance, battle
and ghosts for a thrilling evening of entertainment.
Kingsmen Shakespeare Company is the professional theater
company of Cal Lutheran. General admission is $20 for

The annual two-day festival Ventura "Aarghbor" Village
Ventura Harbor Pirate Days invokes the lure of the sea and
adventurous pirates. Pirate Days offers free family
entertainment that captivates audiences with such famous
pirate re-enactors as Captain Jack Sparrow and Captain
Hook and their crews of scallywags walking along the
Harbor's promenade. Pirate's Cove Marketplace abounds
with precious wares from popular Pirate Vendors, with
extended hours for trading and sales. Shipwreck Cove
comes to life with strolling musicians, nautical knot tying,
Aarghbor Boat Tours, photos with pirates, and an
enchanted $2 treasure hunt for kids (ages 12 and under).
Festival-goers of all ages are encouraged to dress up and join
in the daily pirate kid and adult costume contests.

Put on your dancing shoes and “Take It to the Limit” on

Long Run is back again to perform a quintessential
performance of the Eagles, playing all of their smash hits.

also have a Fleetwood Mac tribute band. Mirage is a
Southern California-based touring Fleetwood Mac tribute
band with an accent on authenticity that cannot be found

show for 2015 featuring the Blue Angels, the Navy’s flight
demonstration squadron. An air show at Point Mugu dates
back to 1960, when the event was called a “space fair. This

COMMUNITY GUIDE - AGOURA HILLS, THOUSAND OAKS, WESTLAKE VILLAGE
Westlake Village
Westlake Village is a very well-planned community
that boasts award-winning neighborhoods, thriving
businesses and enviable lifestyles while preserving
and enhancing the natural environment of the area.
Visitors will see that this community is ideal. The
beach is nearby, Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza is
just up the road, as is the intellectual climate of
California Lutheran University. The whole Conejo
Valley beckons hikers and bicyclists wih its miles of
mountain and canyon trails. This exclusive
community, centered on Westlake Lake is often

The community’s name was chosen to honor early
settler Pierre Augoure in 1928, but through
misspelling or for ease of pronunciation, the Postal
Service changed it to Agoura, becoming Agoura
Hills with the city’s incorporation. Located in the
Santa Monica Mountain foothills just 30 minutes
from many urban centers, the city sits among oakcovered canyons and rolling hillsides and is just
minutes from ocean beaches.
Visitors who like the great outdoors will enjoy this
“Gateway to the Santa Monica Mountains National
Recreation Area with hiking and biking trails in
over 80 acres, in six parks, ranging from small
neighborhood parks to an equestrian center. The
Reyes Adobe Historical Site at the base of Ladyface
Mountain represents 150 years of exciting
California history through documented stories and
artifacts from the families that have called the
Reyes Adobe home since 1850.
Arts Center. This is the largest performing arts
center between Los Angeles and San Francisco and
is funded through a unique public/private
partnership between the City of Thousand Oaks
and the Alliance for the Arts. Shoppers will
appreciate The Oaks Mall and Janss Marketplace
both offering miles of shopping experience. Highend retailers, world-class dining and cinema
experiences make these malls a destination in and
of themselves. For those seeking out historical
sights, visit the Stagecoach Inn Museum Complex
which includes a pioneer home, a Spanish-Mexican
adobe and a Chumash Ap (tule dwelling) as well as
the Stagecoach Inn originally known as the Grand
Union Hotel when it was built in 1876.

Thousand Oaks
The name, presumably for the area’s many oak
trees, first appears on a track map in 1923. Today
it is home to Amgen, Inc., the largest
biotechnology company in the world and Ventura
County’s largest private employer. Annually, it is
among the safest small cities in America. The
residents are serious about preserving the ring of
open space surrounding the city, with local and city
groups continuing to buy more land to save it from
development.
A visit to this area must include the Thousand

Since 1947, Lupe’s has been one of the
community’s first family-owned and operated
restaurants. You will find it snuggled under
an historic old oak tree where just about
every day, lines of people can be seen

COMMUNITY GUIDE - SIMI VALLEY
Simi Valley
The name comes from a Chumash Indian word,
shimiji, which refers to the thread-like clouds that
appear sometimes over the valley. Located at the
edge of eastern Ventura County encircled by
beautiful hills, Simi Valley is a haven away from the
congestion of the San Fernando Valley and Los
Angeles County and is consistently rated one of the
safest cities in the nation.
Visitors come by the “busloads” to the home of the
Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum,
which hosts the Air Force One Pavillion.
Corriganville Park is another must-see, once known
for being the backdrop of many western movies and
television shows.
The city is also host to the annual Cajun Festival, a
weekend-long event that showcases New Orleans
Jazz, blues, Cajun and Creole music as well as
authentic N’awlins cuisine from jambalaya to fried
alligator.
Preserving the tradition of the old west, one Simi
Valley neighborhood still provides bridlepaths for
horses instead of sidewalks.

What Makes a Good Gift? A Good Gift Experience!

Pam Danziger reveals her findings and
relates them to gift giving for our
readers.
Danziger: Having meticulously
profiled customers through surveys,
interviews, and focus groups, I found
that shopping today has fundamentally
changed. It is no longer about the item
to be purchased, but the experience. I
have taken those findings and
projected them onto the importance of
gift choices and the experience of
receiving gifts and what makes that the
best experience it can be.
My findings point to the end of
cocooning, a trend which has
dominated our culture for the past
twenty years. Instead we are now in an
age of “connecting,” characterized by
the desire to find ways to link up and
forge meaningful relationships. This
new trend will affect the stores people
shop in, the brands they select, and
the product categories they purchase,
and the gifts they prefer. Moreover, it
underscores the need for gift givers to
develop new gift experiences that will
enable them to connect with recipients
on an emotional plane. The card, the
personal message, the timely arrival,
the wrapping, how it is presented to
the recipient, all influences the overall
gift experience and satisfaction of the
recipient with that gift.
Based on my findings, I advise those
choosing gifts to:
• Touch the emotions of their
recipients– “After hundreds of hours
spent talking to and interacting with
customers in a research setting, I know
that emotion is at the foundation of
people buying things they don’t need
and it stands to reason, their
enjoyment of gifts they don’t
necessarily need”.
• Entertain, entertain, entertain– “An
educated mind is an active mind, and
an active mind needs mental
stimulation. Marketers and retailers
need to plan to satisfy this need.” A
gift recipient who feels entertained by
the gift, the presentation, the card, the
wrapping, etc. receives an emotional
charge out of knowing effort beyond
the product selected was made for
them.

1. Jacket/Sweatshirt – ALWAYS IN THE CAR:
Our area is famously blessed with typically fantastic
weather and mild temperatures. Many visiting from
other areas may easily be caught off guard by the
20-30 degree temperature swings that can occur
from midday to after sundown. Even at midday a
fifteen minute drive from a sunny Westlake Village
over to a foggy Malibu or Zuma Beach can leave
you shivering with a 20 degree temperature drop.
January through March expect highs from the mid
50s to mid 60s most days and nights from the high
30s to mid 40s (DOUBLE CHECK THIS)
Be prepared with layers – If you plan to be out
for the day and into the evening, or moving about
within Ventura and West L.A.Countys’ beautiful
valleys, mountains or beaches, keep a jacket along
for the ride.
2. Travel Time Estimates – to LAX
Ventura Highway (The 101) …"in the sunshine…"
of popular music lore, and touting beautiful scenery
in places, can become a parking lot along with our
other highway routes that crisscross Ventura County.

The need for patience or extra time is especially
likely as one nears LA and the 405 (if more than 1
passenger the car pool lane helps once you hit the
405), and anytime around commute periods. Tip most shuttle and limo drivers jump off the 405 at
Howard Hughes Blvd., unmarked on the 405 as an
airport exit. After exiting here one can follow well
marked signs and save time compared to the well
marked Century Blvd. exit. From Ventura 1 hour
15 to 1 hour 45 minutes, but it can be much worse.
Alternate Path to LAX from Ventura County –
Canyon/Coast Route - If you pull info from an
online map search or just highlight your 101/405
path to LAX on your road atlas, you can throw the
travel estimates out the window at certain times of
the day or if there is an accident. LAX bound limos
carting celebrities usually wouldn’t be driving next
to you during those times. They will cut across Las
Virgines Canyon or Kanan to get to a more
predictable and scenic PCH (Pacific Coast Highway
aka Hwy. 1) when going to LAX. Compared with
no interstate traffic, this can add 10 minutes to your
travel time. But if the 101/405 slow or stop, the

Ventura
The city’s official name of San Buenaventura (Saint
Bonaventure, an Italian theologian) was shortened
to Ventura, reportedly because the full name did not
fit on railroad timetables. It is more generally
assumed that the shorter name was simply more
convenient.

Ventura County Museum of History & Art, site of
the Ventura County Fair, San Buenaventura State

Whale Watching Off The Ventura Coast
Situated along California’s central coast north
of Los Angeles, Ventura is a community that
boasts some of the state’s richest and most
exciting opportunities to view and interact

day whale watching at the Channel Islands
Marine Sanctuary, at the Camino Real Park
for the emergence of the Monarch butterfly, or
bird watching at two of Ventura’s untamed
estuaries, exploring the natural wonder of

animals on earth and they migrate along
north/south routes seasonally. Each year, as
many as 25,000 Gray Whales travel from their
Alaskan feeding grounds to the warm waters

Whale watching season begins in December
and ends in June, while Blue and Humpback
Whale watching season lasts from May
through September.
This quintessential California beach town
offers something for any outdoor enthusiast or
anyone looking to walk the road less traveled.
Known as the American Galapagos, the
Channel Islands National Park is comprised of
five of the eight California Channel Islands,
including Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa,
San Miguel, and Santa Barbara. These islands
are home to over 2,000 species of plants and
animals, 145 of which are completely unique
to these islands and not found anywhere else
on earth.
The average length of a Gray Whale is
between 36’ and 50’ and can weigh between
26 and 34 metric tons. These whales lack a
dorsal fin and are a dark charcoal color at
birth, turning to a mottled gray later in life
due to vast numbers of barnacles on their
bodies. During their southern migration, the
whales travel very close to the Channel
Islands, making it easy to view them from the
top of any of the islands. However, this is not
your only option. Island Packers is an official
concessionaire of the Channel Islands National
Park and they offer various whale watching
excursion packages. The trips are narrated by
experienced naturalists and last about three

Here are a few helpful tips when going whale
watching:
1. Dress warmly and in layers.
It can get cold out there, and with the ocean
spray and water spouting whales, you may
find yourself unexpectedly wet. Be ready to
shed your wet clothing just in case. And if it
gets warm, you can always shed the extra
clothing.
2. Don’t bring your best camera.
It can get wet on the high sea and you don’t
want to have your camera ruined or your
pictures lost. It’s best to bring a waterproof
disposable camera.
3. Do some research.
It doesn’t hurt to familiarize yourself with
what you will be seeing. Read up on the types
of whales you will be seeing and any other
types of marine life that you may encounter.
The more you know, the more you’ll enjoy.
4. Stay Healthy.
If you get motion or sea sick, bring
something that will help relax you.
Bringing sunscreen is also a good idea. With
the sun’s rays reflecting off the ocean’s
surface, it’s easy to get too
much sun.

A hidden treasure of our area is Malibu Creek State
