PRESIDENT’S REPORT
The Community Foundation of PEI (CFPEI) continues to
increase its profile and impact within the broader PEI community.
Over the past year we have been working to increase our overall
endowment base, and are more actively engaging Islanders on
important community issues. Our vision as a Foundation continues
to be:
‘to promote and support an Island of smart and caring
communities enriching the lives of all Islanders’.
Over the next few years, the Foundation is committed to two key
goals:
(1) Engaging Island communities; we will be reaching out to
all communities across PEI to ensure that everyone is aware of
the Foundation’s role and mission, and of the services we offer;
and
(2) Growing our Island Smart and Caring Communities Fund;
the goal is to add $500,000 each year over the next four years.
This will allow CFPEI to increase its granting capacity to Island
communities.
Our endowment base has continued to grow; the market value
increased from $7,090,000 at 2013 year end to $7,918,500 at
2014 year end. A total of $356,500 in new fund investments were
received in 2014.
With respect to our granting, some $290,000 was dispersed back
into the community through scholarship awards and community
grants; this total includes both earned income and ‘flow through’
funds.
In addition to working toward these broader goals, CFPEI has
been active on a number of levels in 2014; some of these activities
include:
LAUNCH OF ‘TAKING THE PULSE OF ISLAND YOUTH’ REPORT.
On January 8th, CFPEI publicly launched our Vital Signs Report
at a well attended media event at the Confederation Centre. Some
fifty plus citizens, community leaders, and government leaders were
in attendance to receive a copy of the report, and to hear a panel
of PEI youth speak about their experiences and challenges as they
transition into adulthood.
During February and March the Foundation took the results and
findings of the Report ‘on the road’. In collaboration with the PEI
Women Institute and the Education 20-20 Group, the Foundation
conducted presentations in eight locations across the province; in
total about 150 Islanders attended these presentations. Through
these efforts, our hope is that all community stakeholders will work
together to increase support to Island youth as they take their place
as emerging leaders and contributors in our communities.
YOU MAKE YOUR COMMUNITY CAMPAIGN
In March, CFPEI participated in the Community Foundation
of Canada’s - Your Community Makes You...You Make Your
Community. - Campaign. CFPEI is one of 191 Community
Foundations at work in Canada; for nearly a century, Foundations
have been supporting communities, and helping Canadians give
back to their communities. This initiative was designed to profile the
role and contributions of ‘community champions’ within PEI, and
to introduce Islanders to the work of the Community Foundation.
During this campaign, CFPEI celebrated the volunteer work and
commitment of four Islanders, including: Alex Douglas, a young
man who has worked extensively with young people and youth
groups; Meghan Blanchard, an accomplished singer/songwriter
who has generously given her time and talent to raise funds for
many Island non-profit groups; Ari Hoogerbrugge, a resident of
Souris who, in addition to his volunteer work with inmates in
Island Correctional Centres, has helped set up a program for kids
in his home community; and Margie Stewart, a long time resident
and volunteer from Eastern Kings. Ari and Margi attended our
May 2014 AGM and gave testimonials of their volunteer work, and
their beliefs and convictions around the importance and value of
volunteerism.
CONTINUING THE WORK WITH PEI’S NON-PROFIT SECTOR.
In collaboration with the PEI Community Sector Network
(CSN), and researchers from the Mount Royal University in Calgary
and Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, CFPEI undertook a
Social Enterprise Sector Survey with the non-profit sector on PEI.
This survey had been completed in several other provinces across
Canada, and is part of a national effort to explore new ways to
help non-profit organizations raise new funds and revenue to help
achieve their social missions and mandates.
REGIONAL MEETING OF ATLANTIC COMMUNITY FOUNDATIONS
In partnership with the Community Foundation of Canada,
CFPEI hosted the Regional Meeting of Community Foundations
in Atlantic Canada (there are nine Foundation across Atlantic
Canada). The two-day event was held at the Rodd Charlottetown
Hotel, and was attended by representatives from six of the nine
Foundations. In addition to meeting staff and board members
from other foundations and learning about their work, participants
also enjoyed a workshop on developing and maintaining positive
relationships with donors. The workshop was conducted by Suzanne
Gibson from the Community Foundation of Canada
SPECIAL ADVISORY COUNCIL
In June the Foundation invited nine individuals to join the
CFPEI Advisory Council to assist us in achieving our vision and
goals. The Foundation believes that to further grow and develop as
a helping organization, we need to engage other community leaders
who are interested in, and committed to, the social and economic
health of Island communities as we go forward. The Council will
help raise the awareness of the mission and work of the Foundation
within PEI, and help build our Smart and Caring Communities
Fund designed to assist communities across PEI. Current members
of our Advisory Council Include:
Wilma Hambly; Colleen Parker; Ray Keenan; Wayne Carew; Lou
MacEachern; Hon. Catherine Callbeck; Ryan Murphy; and Joseph
Spriet. (Note: Wade MacLauchlan was part of our intial council
membership, but given his recent new endeavours, he has since
withdrawn his membership.)
GOVERNOR GENERAL’S SMART AND CARING COMMUNITIES INITIATIVE
The Governor General of Canada, the Honorable David Johnston,
was on PEI to take part in the 2014 celebrations this past summer. At
a June 18 event hosted by the Governor General, CFPEI launched
1
its Smart and Caring Communities Fund Initiative. 2017 will be
the 150th anniversary of Canada and the Governor has challenged
Canadians to imagine our country as it could be – a “smart and
caring nation” - that holds promise for everyone.
Community Foundations across Canada have joined the
Governor General in helping to achieve this vision by establishing
Smart and Caring Communities Funds across Canada. The purpose
of CFPEI’s Smart and Caring Communities Fund is to fill a unique
and critical role. It will be an unrestricted fund and will provide
CFPEI with the flexibility to respond to the needs identified by
charitable organizations across PEI, now and in the future. Our
goal is to add $500,000 each year to our Island Smart and Caring
Communities Fund over the next four years.
CFPEI PROMOTION AND MARKETING WORKSHOP
LuAnn Lovlin, Director of Communications from the Winnipeg
Community Foundation was on PEI last July, and generously
volunteered her time to conduct a workshop with the Marketing
and Communications Committee, and other Board members
and volunteers. This was a useful and timely workshop for the
Committee, providing a range of ideas and strategies to communicate
and promote the work of the Foundation.
ANNUAL FUND-RISING GALA EVENT:
On July 26th the Foundation hosted its annual gala event at
the Glasgow Hills Resort and Golf Club. Gala attendees enjoyed
an excellent meal, and there was a good response to our silent
auction. The proceeds from this event are used to help with ongoing
administrative and operational costs and allow the Foundation to
engage in and support various community initiatives. A hearty
thank you to all who attend this event each year, the businesses and
individuals who have donated items to the silent auction, and the
staff at the Glasgow Hills Resort. This ongoing community support
is critical to the work of the Foundation.
ANNUAL AWARD AND GRANTS EVENT
Our August 21st, 2014 awards evening saw our largest turnout
ever of recipients, family members and friends. This event recognized
and celebrated our 2014 scholarship winners, award winners, and
grant recipients. This event is also the one time each year where the
Foundation publicly showcases to our donors, patrons and friends
the outcomes and impacts of the work we do.
Each scholarship, award, or grant presented during the event is
the result of someone who cared and who wanted to help out their
community in some way; e.g. helping a young person pursue their
education, or helping an organization to continue its good work in
the community. We want to thank all donors and patrons who have
helped to make this happen through their gifts.
NEW PARTNERSHIP
In 2014, CFPEI entered into a partnership with Syntrak Print
and Graphics Inc. This company offered CFPEI the opportunity
to receive pro bono design work with regard to rebranding CFPEI.
In turn our organizartion would use Syntrak for its printing
requirements. CFPEI is grateful for this relationship and is in the
process of revising and developing its promotional materials.
A HEARTY ‘THANK YOU’
On behalf of the Foundation, I wish to acknowledge the work of,
and thank the following people.
Our office staff, Heidi MacKinnon and Marla MacDonald
Gidney; they have worked to keep the ongoing administrative
tasks ‘on track’, and provided support to the work of the Board and
Committees.
Our heartfelt thanks to Jeniene Peake; Jeniene worked as our
General Manager since early 2010, and has been instrumental
in helping us strengthen the administrative elements of our
organization, and build our endowment base. Jeniene left the
General Manager’s post in September of 2014 to assume and enjoy
new grandparenting responsibilities. Thanks for everything, Jeniene.
And a hearty ‘thank you’ to Carol Fraser – our Board member
from Eastern Kings. Carol has served two terms on our Board,
and has been a solid advocate and supporter of the work of the
Foundation throughout her home region of Eastern Kings. Carol
has served as Board Secretary, a member of the Board Executive
Committee, and on the Finance and Audit Committee. Thank you,
Carol, for your work and support.

NEW FUNDS
HEATHER HENRY MACDONALD FUND
This fund was established with an initial donation by Mrs. MacDonald. The purpose of the fund is to enable the Community Foundation to
address existing and future needs of the third sector on PEI. Mrs. MacDonald is retired from a teaching career which encompassed teaching in
elementary school, high school and at the University of Prince Edward Island. She has worked with many community organizations including
her church, the Seniors Advisory Council, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, the Home Economics Association, a Publishing Collective, the Cancer
Society, the Rose Society, the Quilt Guild and the Stratford Community Choir. She served as a Director on the Board of the Community
Foundation for six years and continues to be involved as an active member of the Foundation’s Granting Committee.
KATHARYN (MYERS) LEA ENDOWMENT
This was created to provide an annual award to Englewood School in Crapaud, PEI. The fund will support projects undertaken by full
time staff members that will enhance the educational experience for present and/or future students of the school. Projects are to support
enhancements beyond core curriculum, for example musical instruments, library books, computer lab equipment, drama program props or
costumes or class trips.
HAZEL AND JOHN ROBINSON FUND
This fund was established by John and Hazel Robinson and will provide a source of funds for the Foundation’s charitable priorities and to
support two named organizations. The creation of this fund further demonstrates their desire to assist, not only present, but future generations
of their community. John and Hazel have been active volunteers in a number of community organizations including Tryon Baptist Church;
First Baptist Church; North Tryon Women’s Institute; Confederation Centre of the Arts; the Tryon River Watershed Cooperative; and the
Tryon and Area Historical Society to name only a few. The Robinsons have been strong supporters of the Community Foundation and John
has served on the Board of Directors for several years and held the positions of President and Chair of the Fund Development Committee.
Both are passionate about Prince Edward Island and its beauty; protecting the environment and sustaining its lifestyle for future generations.
ISLAND TRAILS TRUST FUND
PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND TRAILS INC., operating as “Island Trails” is a not for profit non-government organization which actively
supports the promotion, development, and enhancement of Prince Edward Island’s extensive network of trails for healthy recreation and
educational use. Its mandate is to promote, develop, and maintain a network of trails in the province. The development of the woodland
hiking trails began in 2003, and the Dromore Woodland Trails as well as six other woodland trails were established by 2010. The realization
that a continuous flow of money will be required to fund existing and future undertakings of the organization led to the concept of an
endowment fund. It is visualized that money invested in the Island Trails Trust will generate a steady flow of income for Island Trails to include
in its annual budget. For further information or to make a donation to the Island Trails Trust, please contact any of the Island Trails Board of
Directors or the Community Foundation of Prince Edward Island.
PEI GOLF
The Junior Golf Development Fund was endowed at the Community Foundation of Prince Edward Island in 2014. The PEI Golf
Association was established in 1971 to be the governing body of amateur golf in Prince Edward Island. The Junior Golf Development Fund
was established in 2012 as the result of a generous donation to the PEIGA. The goal of the Junior Golf Development Fund is to provide Island
youth with access to the sport and the opportunity to develop their interest and skills regardless of their financial circumstances. The Junior
Golf Development Endowment Fund will assist junior golfers with the following:
• Access to equipment and playing privileges at local golf courses.
• Access to instruction for junior golfers of all skill levels.
• Entry fees and travel costs to participate in local, regional and national tournaments.
• Scholarships to further their education and golf career.
HONOURABLE CATHERINE CALLBECK ENDOWMENT
The Honourable Catherine Callbeck Endowment Fund was established by Hon. Callbeck to support various worthy causes including the
awarding of bursaries to Prince Edward Island students wishing to pursue a post-secondary education but lacking the resources to do so.
Eligible candidates will have graduated from a Prince Edward Island High School or have earned a GED High School Equivalency Diploma
within five years of applying for a bursary. Hon. Callbeck plans to build the Fund over a number of years and the awarding of bursaries is
anticipated to begin within 5 years.
THE ST. JOHN’S LODGE NO. 1
4
Through this Fund, Ross Estate Bursaries will be provided to eligible applicants who: are attending, or have been accepted to attend, a post
secondary institution (college or university); are members or kin of St John’s Lodge No 1, and have a demonstrated need for assistance to
further their education; and have submitted, along with their application, an essay on a topic of their choice.
