I have had the pleasure of driving over the Crown Range regularly this
winter. It is challenging and not the place to have a moment of inattention. I
love the drive, like a cup of coffee in the morning it certainly wakes you up
and gets the brain ticking. Every corner could present a hazard and it was
no surprise to me the list of perils written by Mark Price in the Otago Daily
Times last Saturday (A Road With Hazards At Many Turns, 15/8/15).
This road, like many in the Queenstown Lakes District, has certain areas
you learn to know and respect. Our roads are very unique. However it is
the unknown hazards that keep my eyes on the road and hands upon the
wheel. Topping the list of hazards when you take to the roads around the
Wakatipu are fellow drivers who do not seem to know what the centre line
is for. Let me spell it out. The centre line is there to separate cars heading
in opposite directions. You stick to your side and I will stick to mine. Seems
simple enough, but unfortunately this basic of the road code is sadly
ignored by many.
There was such a major problem with cars cutting one particular corner in
the Kawarau Gorge that a police officer used to stand there taking pictures
of offending vehicles and issuing infringement notices. Great revenue
gathering exercise but it did not stop the corner being cut. What did stop
the corner cutters were a dozen little yellow plastic sticks, stuck to the
centre line. What a good idea. Problem solved.

One thing we have to get used to around here is that people on our roads
are unfamiliar with the territory. We all have stories of near misses. Others
cannot tell their story because they are dead. It is highly unlikely you
will walk away from a head on car crash. But the assumption that this is
exclusively a tourist driver issue is wrong. Corner cutting is a kiwi thing
too and particularly on a road like the Crown Range, following a “racing
line” is too tempting for some. So rather than beat up on tourists, we could
be making life so much easier for them and life much safer for us all. A
little yellow stick placed on the centre line is a simple way of reminding
us what the centre line is for – to separate cars travelling in the opposite
direction. It works quite well. Every time I pass those sticks in the middle
of the Kawarau Gorge it reminds me what side of the road I should be on.
Sometimes the simplest things work the best.

Lazy CourierPost
Right that’s it, final straw. I didn’t want to go full blown
whinge but today’s gone too far, I’m a man on the edge!
Courier posties, in particular it seems the ones who work
for CourierPost, just what exactly do we need to do to get
you to actually do your job properly?
I’ve now lost track of the number of times I’ve come
home to a note saying “sorry we missed you”, now please
drive out to Frankton and pick up your parcel. Which is
incredibly frustrating, especially when Monday - Friday you
can only pick up your parcel before 5 (not exactly ideal for
us day workers), but this is at least understandable when
nobody is at home to collect the delivery. Unfortunately
though after living in Fernhill for a year and a half, I can
now say with absolute certainty that whether anybody is at
home or not makes less than no difference.
So often I’ve come home to a lovely “we missed you”
note, looked at the time and thought “that’s strange, I was
sure my housemate was in then”. Checked with them, and
yep, they were in the house, ALL DAY. But again, I’ve
always given them the benefit of the doubt, maybe me
or my housemates have just been upstairs when they’ve
knocked? They still would’ve needed to knock quieter
than a church mouse, but lets not assume they’re just being
lazy. But today nicely confirmed what I’ve suspected for a
while, they’re just useless.
Response From Courier Post
In response to your readers letter, CourierPost wants
to assure its customers that it aims to deliver first time,
every time. It is not in our interests, or yours, to have
customers run ragged in search of their parcels.
We also have an obligation to keep items safe and
secure, so even non signature required items can
sometimes be carded if the courier believes it would
be open to the weather/theft/animals if left at some
delivery points.
Also where conditions are icy, dangerous or there are
dogs on your property, our couriers are advised to take
care, and where appropriate leave a card to call – we
take the safety of our people seriously.
That said, we encourage customers to report
performance issues right away via our 0800COURIER
phone lines so we can investigate & manage any
misconduct properly.
I knew today that my housemate was expecting his
passport to be delivered (which he desperately needs for
his visa application), so made sure I was keeping an eye
out for the delivery guy. Then bang on midday, there he is
pulling up in his van. I went to go downstairs to meet him
but then froze as I saw this fine CourierPost employee step
out his van, take a look at the 20 stairs he’d need to climb
to get to our house, and then quickly shove one of their
trademark notes in our letterbox. Last time I checked, the
job description of a delivery guy was to deliver the actual
package. Not to do a quick round of Fernhill, dropping off
a bunch of notes that re-direct us all to Frankton. That is
after re-arranging shifts to make sure we’re there before 5.
My housemate will now be having to give up a day getting
paid to do his job, because you get paid to not do yours
properly. Do you see the slightly skewed logic there? I’d
like to point out at this stage that I realise that this doesn’t
go for every postie or delivery guy. I work in a store in
town and deal with a lot of them, the vast majority are
good blokes who I understand have a tight schedule and
a busy day. But Mr Fernhill delivery man you are just a git.
How about next week you start actually making it to the
front door, the week after you can give knocking a go.
Baby steps and all that, wouldn’t want to overwork you…
Waiting Around
We also want our customers to be aware of the range
of redelivery options we offer. We understand not
everyone can make it to the depot within working
hours.
On the Card to Call we leave you, you will see that
we offer a variety of options for redelivery that you can
make without leaving your home, via our website www.
courierpost.co.nz or 0800COURIER. They include:
• Redirection to another address (for example you
could have it delivered to your work during the day)
• Redelivery to the original delivery address (good if
you know you will be available at the address to sign
for the delivery)
• Redelivery on a Saturday (fee applies)
• Collection from a nearby PostShop

Locals Rate
I recently purchased some ski gear which as we all know
isn’t cheap. I didn’t mind too much as skiing was one of
the activities I really wanted to do whilst here.
It wasn’t until later that day that I was discussing it with a
few friends when they told me about “locals rate”. They
told me I could’ve got up to 20% off my purchase if I’d
only used those magical words! What is that about? I’ve
been living here for a month and a half! Do I qualify???
It’s Queenstown! Is anyone considered a “local” here?

Think About It - Issue 512
Going out to lunch shouldn’t end up to be such a
problem....ordering from a simple bar menu, great, sit
down in an uncrowded area, great....waiting for Ages
for the burger to arrive, not great, first bite finding
the burger cold, not great...So I said to the waitress
(who looked as though she was still half asleep!) &
she first just looked at me blankly, then said she’d
get it warmed...as I pointed out that I didn’t want
it ‘zapped’ in the microwave, she begrudgingly said
she’d order a fresh one....like, what’s my problem?
Then when it came...it was slammed down & she
huffily walked away mumbling under her breath & the
short order chef said to her sarcastically “I hope it
meets their expectations”....what a flamn’ cheek!

Response To A Doctors Responsibility Issue 511
Whatever happened to the good old “family doctor”
who actually made an effort to understand each
person’s ailments and cared for them accordingly!
Now it’s just too easy to make money by signing
a prescription or seeing a patient through their
computer records, or better still just get a nurse to
do the work and get paid for it!. Even the good old
stethoscope is more of a dress accessory now! Many
GP’s have become inaccessible and don’t ever try
and speak to one on the phone! Disappointed.

Hi, I have applied for my Variation of Conditions on the basis
of graduate work experience. If I get the status updated on
my email that the VOC is approved and I can work with the
new employer, do I need to leave the current job immediately
or can I can still work there in order to give at least 2 weeks
notice?
Technically, you are only allowed to work in accordance
with the conditions of your work visa. So if your variation of
conditions application is granted and your visa changes to
state the name of your new employer, you cannot continue to
work for your old employer. Your old visa will be cancelled and
you cannot work out your notice period for your old employer
under the new visa.
However, practically, our view is that you should tell your
intention to Immigration NZ when you submit your variation
of conditions application and make them aware that you
intend to work through your notice period upon the grant of
your variation of conditions. If they are made aware of your
intention in advance and they then say that you cannot do
this, then you will have no choice but to hold off lodging the
variation of conditions until you have completed your notice
period.
