In 2001, a couple of $100 Warehouse BBQ’s fired into life at the back of the Betty’s
Liquor Store on the corner of Camp Street and Cow Lane. Using an unused part of the
liquor store, Fergburger opened out into a vacant car park at the back of the shop serving
customers. From humble beginnings in the entrepreneurial spirit that defines Queenstown,
an icon was born.
Within only a few years, Fergburger had out grown its car park and “pop up” hole in the wall
service counter. The move from Queenstown’s top hidden secret to main street commercial
juggernaut is there for us all to see today. Out of the shadows serving late night party
animals to serving nearly everyone who has spent a day or two in Queenstown in the last ten
years. Ask a taxi or Super Shuttle driver operating out of the airport what the most common
question people ask is and they’ll say…”where is Fergburger”?
But tourists hardly need to ask that question because you simply cannot miss Fergburger. It
is like the WINZ office in Invercargill, or the district court in Alexandra. It’s the busiest place
in town. Negotiating your way past the crowd can be a ten second inconvenience that sends
jealous less successful business people wild. What right do they have taking over a public
footpath for their customers to loiter on? Is that a breach of their resource consent? And
another question Fergburger must have considered themselves, have they out grown their
premises again just like the original Cow Lane location.
Recognising the problem, Fergburger asked a question of the council. Can we own the public
space in front of our business? And the council said yes, for a meagre $100,000, sparking
another huge debate. The outraged objectors quite rightly point out a terrible business
decision effectively selling prime downtown land, or at least the right to occupy rent free,
and the loss of three car parks for the public to use. However rather than suck sour grapes
I prefer to see this development as a positive move despite the poor financial return for
ratepayers. It shows the council is willing to do a deal with and support private enterprise, if
the end result is better for the town. I argue that many of our social problems late at night in
central Queenstown stem from lack of ownership and responsibility for the public spaces.
Most bars and restaurants must close their doors at 10pm and stop patrons from using
outdoor seating. Rather than manage the streetscape outside their premise, businesses
are restricted from using it. Therefore washing their hands of responsibility and leaving the
antisocial to do as they please on the streets.
Allowing legitimate business to operate in public spaces is a good thing. I hope the next step
will be restaurants in The Mall and elsewhere allowed to serve food and beverage to outdoor
tables all night, not just to 10pm. When 10pm rolls around The Mall goes from an appealing
place full of hospitality goodness to a dangerous thoroughfare where the people nobody
wants inside their premises congregate to pick fights with each other and prey on anyone
who dares to look sideways.
The more user friendly we make our town the more positive the reaction is going to be.
Queenstown is not perfect and if we do nothing to improve then we run the risk of falling out
of favour as a desirable place to live and visit. If the new outdoor space outside Fergburger
becomes a hotbed of uncontrolled mayhem, as ratepayers we have the right to ask the
council why. And this decision also invites other businesses to try their luck acquiring council
land. But to simply say no to private and public partnership is stubbornly negative. We
already have enough negative rules and regulations stifling private enterprise growth. It feels
much better when the council tries to be positive.

Bin Banter!
I’ve have just been wondering what happening with
the process of rubbish bins up Fernhill? About a
month ago they all disappeared, not that we had
many anyway! We were told they were removed
as people were putting household rubbish in them,
therefore they were too full to pick up!
Asking around, Im sure it’s the only suburb/
neighbourhood in NZ NOT to have rubbish bins
around - let alone outside the dairy. With all the
hype and crack down on picking up dog litter, etc
I would think there would be something up here,
even at one of the parks/playgrounds.
I know these all cost money but it’s not very fair that
all of us that pay their rates/dog reg, etc miss out
because someone put too much rubbish in the bin!
Why not add a couple of little ones for dog litter
that the portable little rubbish collector can pick up
on his way past. Or have rubbish bins similar to the
ones in town that can fit big bags into. Just some
ideas?”
Rubbish
The dairy provides bins inside the store for its own
patrons, and we are looking into a different type of
bin for outside the shop and in other parts of Fernhill
that would be more enclosed and less able to be
filled with bags of household refuse.
The Council has also bag dispensers for dog poo at
various locations around the district.

Muppets on bikes...
So the law is helmets whilst on bikes? Not so in
Queenstown. Lights at night? Reflective clothing?
Rear red reflector? Single file riding? None of this
seems to apply here. Do the police check on this
ever?
How often have I swerved suddenly because
some muppet looms out of the dark on a bike. Or
stared gobsmacked as a rider scares the shit out of
a pedestrian on a crossing by whizzing past the
stationary cars and swerving between the people on
the crossing. Like they own the road and can do
what they want? Don’t even get me started on the
downhillers weaving all over the place coming down
Fernhill. Oblivious to the cars behind them.
Guess what people? You don’t even pay road tax.
Nor do you have to pass a test. And when you get
hit you will no doubt blame the driver and whinge
on about a fair go for cyclists, they should have seen
me, etc and the poor driver who accidentally hits
you will be a nervous wreck.
Selfish. Stupid. Dangerous. Muppets. And yes I
ride a bike too, with helmet, lights, etc
GD
Traffic lights
Once upon a time, Queenstown used to be cool
for not having traffic lights... now it’s just stupid. With
an ever increasing permanent population and more
tourists holidaying here, perhaps it’s time to improve
our roading network with the use of traffic lights?
Frankton roundabout would be the logical place
to start and then perhaps the bottom of Stanley
St. Or perhaps an underpass here for pedestrians
If you are eligible, will you vote in

Reponse From QLDC
It’s a pity that the actions of a few affect everyone.
You’re right that the streetside rubbish bins in Fernhill
were removed because they were being misused by
people filling them up with household rubbish so
they overflowed.
ASK ME
(they build them for cows in Southland) rather than
a pedestrian crossing which continuously stops the
flow of traffic in, out and through town.
If we are big enough to have an international airport,
two McDonalds and maybe two convention centres
then maybe we are big enough to have some traffic
lights?

Yes, I support the unknown person in Auckland
who waited in supermarket carparks, and when
someone who was not disabled parked their car
in a disabled carpark, he snuck over and let 2
of their tyres down... great trick... no damage,
and he left a card on the windscreen telling the
driver what he had done, and why he did it...
it should happen around here a bit... people
soon learn after having it done to their car...

fo any ability in anything else (a few excluded)
to cap rents in the private market?
Sounds a bit like National Socialism - you know
what the abbreviation of Natioanl Socialism is?
Na-Si - or as you are probably more familiar with
- Nazi.
Elected people have no place in our society
regarding market forces. Instead of complaining
you had to drive to Frankton - perhaps you
should encourage your place of work to move
to Frankton - it is afterall the geographic centre
of the Wakatipu.
It also gets a lot of sun, and is sheltered, plus
I understand it has the only electronic store in
the area.

LANE NEAVE LAWYERS
HETISH LOCHAN SENIOR SOLICITOR
I have submitted my Expression of Interest because I have 125 points
on the basis of my work experience and qualification. However, I don’t
have a job offer in New Zealand. Why has my Expression of Interest
not been selected? It’s been over 4 months now. Does my points
allocation not qualify even though it is way over 100 points?
The points threshold for the submission of an Expression of Interest
(EOI) under the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) is still 100. So your
points allocation of 125 is not the problem here.
The issue lies with the current criteria used by Immigration New Zealand
(INZ) to select EOI’s out of the SMC Pool for further consideration.
Recent trends indicate that INZ is only currently selecting EOI’s with a
points claim over 140, or EOI’s with points between 100 and 140 but
that also include a skilled job offer. That is because there is significant
demand at the moment for the available residency places, therefore
the selection criteria is elevated to a high level. If this trend continues,
and the selection level/criteria does not come down, your EOI could
remain in the Pool for a long period of time and ultimately expire (6
months from the date of submission).
Unfortunately our view is that it is highly unlikely that your EOI will
be selected from the Pool and you receive an invitation to apply for
residence before it expires. Before submitting a new EOI, our advice
would be to receive an professional opinion as to whether or not there
is a high likelihood of selection from the Pool before spending another
$510 on a mere assumption that you will be selected.

It was a game for the purists amongst us and in atrocious conditions
Arrowtown and Wakatipu delivered a drama filled Premiership semifinal on Saturday. With Jack Reid Park in Arrowtown reduced to a mud
bath you couldn’t tell the teams apart. And they couldn’t be separated
on the score sheet either with the game going to extra time after
ending 13-all after 80 minutes. In golden point extra extra extra time
Arrowtown clinched the win to earn a place in this weekend’s
Grand Final against Maniototo.
