I had plenty of time to think about this topic while trying to drive from Rees
Street around the corner to Camp Street last week. I could have pulled the old
laptop out and written a full essay such was the pace of travel. A snail would have
got around the corner quicker than my 3 litre turbo diesel.
I’m trying to think of all the roading projects undertaken to improve traffic flow
during the best part of the two decades that I have been living in the Wakatipu,
and I’m struggling to think of many. Besides changing the direction of traffic to a
one way system in the CBD (which isn’t working for me today); widening Frankton
Road, and now the double lane bridge at the Kawarau Falls to get us to the gridlock
at the Frankton roundabout quicker, is there anything else of significance or has it
all been talk?
Talk of a Man Street bypass to Fernhill; talk of a Melbourne Street bypass from
Frankton Road to Gorge Road; talk of improvements and future planning here,
there, and everywhere but in the end all we get is a whole lot of nothing. In the
meantime, the problems are escalating to a whole new level. Only a few years ago
it was easy to avoid. Do not drive along Gorge Road in the direction of town at 4pm
when Coronet Peak traffic came back from a day up the mountain. It backed up
to the Caltex petrol station. Now that is the least of our problems. It might not be
a matter of life and death other than around Glenda Drive, which certainly is that
serious. However, it is frustrating for locals and plain embarrassing dishing up a
bad dose of what our valued visitors are seeking to avoid after leaving their home
cities.

Of course it all comes down to money and priorities, and I’ve heard the cost of
building the bypass options around the Queenstown CBD would be approximately
$50million. That is a familiar figure, being the estimated cost of the proposed
CBD Convention Centre. I will let you judge QLDC on their prioritising of rate
payer money on economic growth or infrastructure. In my opinion they are equally
important and fundamentally connected. You cannot have growth without improving
infrastructure and vice versa, otherwise you end up with the problems we have.
The simple fact of the matter is the Wakatipu has had tremendous growth in the
last twenty years, yet both national and local authorities have failed to address our
traffic predicament with anything more than words. We have often been referred to
as the little town with the big city economy. Now we have big city problems to boot.
I wonder what the next twenty years will bring.

Winter Road Reports
QLDC provides an early morning road update seven days a week through
the winter. You can get it by following @queenstownlakes on Twitter;
“liking” Queenstown Lakes District Council on Facebook, or signing up
for our emailed reports – go to our website www.qldc.govt.nz or email
[email protected] and put “road report” in the subject line. While
you’re at it, now is a good time to check that your chains fit your tyres
properly and you know how to put them on. Keep an ice-scraper and
torch in your glove box.
Dogs Being a Nuisance? – Tell QLDC
There are times when man’s best friend drives people barking mad. If
you see wandering dogs, dog attacks or there are barking issues in your
neighbourhood, please call the Council straight away. We provide a 24/7
reporting service on 441 0499 and if the problem involves a dog attack on
people, stock or other dogs, we aim to respond straight away.
Heritage AGM
The Wakatipu Heritage Trust is holding its AGM on Wednesday 16 July,
5pm in the QLDC Council chamber, 10 Gorge Road. Come along and
find out what the Trust is doing to preserve and enhance the legacy of
the past.
Burning Questions
Planning a bonfire to get rid of your hedge trimmings? If you live in a
rural area anywhere in the Wakatipu Basin, you will need to get a fire
permit from the Otago Rural Fire Authority. It’s a simple process but think
ahead and apply for the permit before you plan to start burning. Phone
0800 673473 for more information. This applies to permits in rural areas
– sorry, but backyard burning in town is a no-no everywhere.
After-Hours Planning Service
Our after-hours resource planning service is aimed at people who have
trouble getting away from their day job to seek advice on new projects. A
planner is on duty every Wednesday night from 5-9pm to discuss planning
issues, including the resource consent requirements for new business
ventures, building extensions and visitor accommodation rules. Phone
441 4099 or email [email protected] to make an appointment
for a face to face meeting or a phone consultation.
What Happens at Council Meetings?
If you’ve ever wondered how some of the big decisions for our community
are made, come to a Council meeting and find out. The meetings are
always open to the public, and they all start with a public forum where
anyone can have a say on any topic. The next full Council meeting
is on Thursday 24 July at 1pm in the Council chamber, 10 Gorge Rd,
Queenstown.
Be Prepared over Winter
We live in an alpine environment, so it pays to be ready for what winter
brings – that includes extended cold weather, icy roads and occasional
power outages. There’s little worse than fumbling for a torch in the dark
and finding that the battery’s flat. Keep a torch where you can lay hands
on it easily, and if you use candles, put them in a candle holder (a jam jar
is easy) and keep well away from drapes and soft furnishings. A camping
stove or BBQ are good alternative ways to cook if the power’s off.
Out at the Gate by 8 – Even when it Snows
Even ice and snow don’t stop our trusty refuse and recycling vehicles,
so wherever you live, remember to put your rubbish and recycling out for
collection by 8am. We sometimes field complaints from people who miss
the weekly collection because they aim to put their bins or bags out just
before the truck passes their gate. But the collecting time can vary from
week to week so remember: “Out at the gate by 8” is the simple rule

ASK ME
Rich-Hikers or Cash, Grass or Ass, No One Rides for Free
Now, I have hitched many places since being in this
country, it was my primary mode of transport for getting up
the remarkables last season. However, this season I have
bought a Cardrona pass, rather than a Remarks or Coronet
pass (think I made a winning decision there!). One of the
major downfalls however, is the fuel I use getting there and
back. I have a small group of friends that i ride share with
to keep the costs down.
So, last week I was returning to Queenstown after a day
at Cardrona, when I drove past a hitch hiker. Concerned
for the added fuel consumption I carried on. This left me
feeling guilty as i had plenty of space in my car, I rounded
the next bend there were 2 more hitch hikers so I stopped
and picked them up to relieve my conscience. One of
these hitch hikers who was from England, sat in the front
with me and the other sat in the back and said nothing.
The English lad started, chatting away on the drive back
and it was the content of this conversation that concerned
me. He preceded to tell me that he lost his brand new
samsung phone in Wanaka, but it had been returned.
He then told me that he was bored last week, so he
spontaneously booked a skydive. The point I am trying
to make is that this guy, clearly had a bit of disposable
income. Im willing to bet that he has more than I do!
When I dropped him to the centre of Queenstown, he
said goodbye and went on his way. I dont know if it is just
me that feels that hitchers should be expected to exchange
money, goods or services for a ride and not just see that
mooching off other peoples, well earnt fuel money is an
acceptable thing to do. A bus from Wanaka can cost as
little as $20 which is less than what I spend on fuel getting
to Cardrona and back!!!
So next time you are hitching, see to it that you have cake,
redbull, beer or cold hard cash to offer the driver. They
are doing you a favour, that still costs them money at the
end of the day
Max
Greed is Not a Financial Issue. It’s a Heart Issue.
So having bought a seasons ski pass, last Sunday was the
first day at Remarks for me. I have always preferred the
remarkables over Coronet and was super excited to try out
the new lift and facilities. We headed over and arrrived
at the bottom just before 11 to a que of traffic waiting to
head up.
An NZ worker was meeting traffic and advising that the
car parks were full and we were to park up and use the
bus. Ok fair enough....until the four of us were told it
would be 10 dollars each please!! Surely if you do not
have the capitcity to cope with the numbers (which
should be expected to increase with the new facilities)
you should offer a free shuttle bus???? We had four of
us in our 4WD car, chains in the boot and all had paid
near on 1000 dollars for our season passes and then are
expected to fork our 40 dollars between us to enable
us to reach the ski field, which would cost us less than 5
dollars each in fuel.
Come on NZ Ski, I don’t work hard and save for a ski
pass, pay for a car and its maintenance to then be told to
pay for a bus because you can’t cope with the numbers.
Sort it out.
Annoyed season pass holder (along with few others I
imagine)
To the Annoyed Season Pass Holder
We understand the disappointment our customers faced
on Sunday 6 July when we had to stop further vehicles
from driving up the Remarkables access road due to the
large number of people arriving at the ski area that morning.
Over the summer, in conjunction with the other
improvements to the ski area, NZSki increased the
number of available carparks on the ski area to 625, an
increase of 12% from the previous year. However, as a
result of both the New Zealand and Australian school
holidays converging, this capacity was quickly exhausted
on Sunday. Safety is of paramount importance to us and
we simply couldn’t safely allow additional vehicles up the
road. We won’t compromise on safety but we apologise
to the impact this decision had on those customers who
couldn’t drive up the road.
NZSki has made a significant investment in the
improvements on offer at The Remarkables this year with
a new six-seat express chairlift, additional snowmaking,
trail works and sealing the first 4kms of the road. This
is the first stage of a $45 million redevelopment and will
be followed with a new base building and the sealing of
the remaining 9kms of road. This investment is part of
NZSki’s commitment to bring the best possible ski and
snowboard product to our customers.
Yours sincerely

It’s A Pooey Situation
Issue 457
I regularly walk my two dogs all over the area, and
pick up their poo, only to walk all around town or
the local tracks with it. Where are your ‘number of
dog dispensers across the district’ actually located, I
would love to know.
There is ONE in town at Queenstown Bay, thank
you.
There are ZERO on Frankton track or Sunshine
Bay, ZERO at Shotover River track, ZERO at Mt.
Creighton/12 Mile, ZERO at Bob’s Cove, ZERO
at Wilson’s Bay, ZERO in the gardens, ZERO on
Gorge Rd.
I would say it’s fairly obvious QLDC aren’t providing
full service to dog owners. Quit placing all the blame
on dog owners who don’t pick up poo, join the
rest of the world in being proactive to encourage it.
Provide bins, provide bags, provide signage and be
proud that we are all doing the right thing!
Erica
Hi Erica,
Thank you for your post and clearly you are a
responsible dog owner, but unfortunately not
everyone is. We do have some dispensers already,
holding 1000 bags each. They’re in Queenstown
Bay and Queenstown Gardens (that one was just
installed this week.) We also have one in Arrowtown
and three in Wanaka.
Over the next few weeks another five dispensers will
be installed around the district, including some of the
places you’ve suggested. But we won’t be putting any
on DOC land, for example Mt. Creighton/12 Mile,
at Bob’s Cove or Wilson’s Bay because QLDC
does not control these areas. Where possible the
bag dispensers will be attached to bins, with signage
and we will publicise these details too.

Up to this point it has been a fantastic season for the Arrowtown
Premiers. Unbeaten all year but after despatching Clyde last
Saturday 19-13, the overall success of the season hangs on the results
of the next few weeks.
To etch ‘ARROWTOWN 2014’ on the White Horse Cup and lock it away for
the summer, Arrowtown must continue their unbeaten run for two more
weeks. Starting this weekend against a resurgent Wakatipu then the
following week against ex-All Black Andrew Hore’s Maniototo. To add
even more spice to the local derby this weekend, it was Wakatipu who
Arrowtown took the prized white Horse Cup off earlier in the season.
If there is one game of club rugby you need to watch this year, it is
this one. Come stand on your side of the Shotover River divide at
Jack Reid Park this Saturday at 2:30pm.
