It’s that time again, with extra cheese factor projecting from billboards all over
the district. The countdown to the general election is on and candidates are putting
their best smiles on show. But voting decisions should not be made based on the
state of the pearly whites. It’s policies, promises and in my opinion integrity that
counts the most. You can promise the world and politicians are notorious for talking
the talk. But talk is cheap and someone without integrity will have no problem at all
doing a backflip once they have their seat in parliament safely acquired.
Thanks to electorate boundary reform back in 2007, the Wakatipu is lumped in with
Southland farming interests in the Clutha-Southland electorate. This electorate
stretches to the east, west and south and is geographically the largest in New
Zealand. It is easy for Queenstown’s unique needs to be lost in such a large
electorate. Further compounding our lack of bargaining chips here in the Wakatipu,
is the fact Clutha-Southland is a so called “safe seat” meaning one particular party
has a massive majority, making the fight a no contest. However that should not stop
us asking questions of our candidates, as the political parties they represent are
desperate for every ‘party vote’ they can get.
Of course it is all pointless if you are one of those who for whatever reason do
not exercise your democratic right and fail to cast a vote on September 20th.
There are a number of Queenstown residents who are not actually New Zealand
residents, therefore are ineligible to vote. But for everyone else over 18 years of
age there is no excuse not to vote. Yet at the last general election in 2011 a quarter
of all enrolled voters did not cast their vote. Our forefathers who built this country
and fought for its independence would turn in their graves at such an apathetic
attitude. Look around the world at various conflict zones and dictatorships and
you’ll quickly realise just how lucky we are.
‘King of Harry’s’ winner Simon with bar manager Ed at the
Harry’s Pool Comp last Monday
Being a fast growing district with lots of recent arrivals, the Queenstown Lakes
District has a problem with people living here but not actually enrolled in the
Clutha-Southland electorate. Luckily this is easy to fix. Of all the dealing we have
with government departments, enrolling or updating your details must be one of
the simplest processes you will ever encounter. You can check details on line at
www.elections.org.nz, you can phone 0800 367656, or just pop into the local post
shop.
If those cheesy grins at every corner into and out of Queenstown, Arrowtown and
Frankton remind you of anything over the next few weeks, let it be a reminder to
double check you are enrolled. And enrolled in the Clutha-Southland electorate.
The more people voting from the Wakatipu, the more the successful candidate and
winning party will have to listen to our particular needs. Every vote counts.

Remember to Register your Dog
If you own a dog, remember to pay the annual registration fee by 31
July. From 1 August it will cost you an extra 50% on the bill. We sent the
account at the end of June and a reminder, so if you’ve somehow mislaid
the letters (maybe the dog ate them!) give us a call on 441 0499 or drop
in to the Gorge Rd office and we’ll help you sort it out.
Winter Road Reports
QLDC provides an early morning road update seven days a week through
the winter. You can get it by following @queenstownlakes on Twitter;
“liking” Queenstown Lakes District Council on Facebook, or signing up
for our emailed reports – go to our website www.qldc.govt.nz or email
[email protected] and put “road report” in the subject line. While
you’re at it, now is a good time to check that your chains fit your tyres
properly and you know how to put them on. Keep an ice-scraper and
torch in your glove box.
Dogs Being a Nuisance? – Tell QLDC
There are times when man’s best friend drives people barking mad. If
you see wandering dogs, dog attacks or there are barking issues in your
neighbourhood, please call the Council straight away. We provide a 24/7
reporting service on 441 0499 and if the problem involves a dog attack on
people, stock or other dogs, we aim to respond straight away.
Burning Questions
Planning a bonfire to get rid of your hedge trimmings? If you live in a
rural area anywhere in the Wakatipu Basin, you will need to get a fire
permit from the Otago Rural Fire Authority. It’s a simple process but think
ahead and apply for the permit before you plan to start burning. Phone
0800 673473 for more information. This applies to permits in rural areas
– sorry, but backyard burning in town is a no-no everywhere.
After-Hours Planning Service
Our after-hours resource planning service is aimed at people who have
trouble getting away from their day job to seek advice on new projects. A
planner is on duty every Wednesday night from 5-9pm to discuss planning
issues, including the resource consent requirements for new business
ventures, building extensions and visitor accommodation rules. Phone
441 4099 or email [email protected] to make an appointment
for a face to face meeting or a phone consultation.
What Happens at Council Meetings?
If you’ve ever wondered how some of the big decisions for our community
are made, come to a Council meeting and find out. The meetings are
always open to the public, and they all start with a public forum where
anyone can have a say on any topic. The next full Council meeting is
on Thursday 28 August at 1pm in the Council chamber, 10 Gorge Rd,
Queenstown.
Be Prepared over Winter
We live in an alpine environment, so it pays to be ready for what winter
brings – that includes extended cold weather, icy roads and occasional
power outages. There’s little worse than fumbling for a torch in the dark
and finding that the battery’s flat. Keep a torch where you can lay hands
on it easily, and if you use candles, put them in a candle holder (a jam jar
is easy) and keep well away from drapes and soft furnishings. A camping
stove or BBQ are good alternative ways to cook if the power’s off.
Out at the Gate by 8 – Even when it Snows
HALO is being revamped with a NEW MENU
Monday 28/7 and soon to be a new look
Serving alot of the old favourites plus some fresh new choices
Even ice and snow don’t stop our trusty refuse and recycling vehicles,
so wherever you live, remember to put your rubbish and recycling out for
collection by 8am. We sometimes field complaints from people who miss
the weekly collection because they aim to put their bins or bags out just
before the truck passes their gate. But the collecting time can vary from
week to week so remember: “Out at the gate by 8” is the simple rule.

Landlords Are Holding This Town To Ransom
Looking to rent retail space in this town is frustrating!!!
In 99% of towns and cities throughout New Zealand
(and from what I’ve seen of the world so far too) a
central address might be seen as ‘convenient’, ‘the
centre of a community’ and ‘the place you want your
business space to be’. However, Queenstown is
the complete opposite! I live and work in the centre
of town. I get 30-minutes for my lunch break. But
if I need to go to an electronics store on my lunch
break I have to drive out to Remarkables Park and
back - ummm not ideal?
Why can’t an electronics store be in town? They
can’t afford the rent; another store with high foot
traffic of the Ferg-kind (the kind of stats that make
landlords see huge dollar symbols) is moving and
down-sizing as if it stayed put it would end up facing
closure; a national chain store I used to work in with
25 stores nationwide consistently finished dead
last when compared with other stores and that was
despite 2 of the staff in Queenstown consistently
placing in the Top 10 Salespeople nationally!
Recently, I’ve heard murmurs an international chain
store in the mall can no longer afford the rent of
its prime location; even brilliant stores that provided
variety like Kapa Gallery/Gift Store has had to close
its doors in town to operate only out of the airport
I assume only because of the high rent it was facing
from a landlord that is more intent on seeing huge
sums of money line their pockets rather than better
our town - let’s hope something different opens up
in its space and not just another souvenir store, info
centre or place to eat!
Councillors, if you are serious about encouraging new
business ventures and expanding Queenstown’s
appeal to industries other than tourism, you need
to seriously think about placing a cap on the rent
that can be charged to tenants - that way good
honest people with ideas and dreams of opening
their own businesses (that aren’t necessarily tourism
related) can give it a shot! If we are going to be taken
seriously on the world stage as a world class resort,
we need to not only focus on the needs of tourists,
but also the needs of the community that support
these tourists during their stay.
Frustrated Entrepreneur!
Today they went above the call of duty. They were
swamped with a massive coffee order when I walked
in. After saying it would be a wait of over 15 minutes
I was about to walk out empty handed as I had to get
back to work. Instead though, they took my cup off
my hands and said not to worry, just over 15 minutes
later they delivered it to my desk down the road.
Now that’s service!
This time of year when it’s super busy in town there
is often an air of negativity in some corners with
people moaning about locals missing out. Well you
can always count on one thing; Ferg loves us!!

Lazy The New Disabled?
Disabled parking is for the disabled simple as that Just because you are too lazy to walk the extra few
meters like everyone else, or are worried about your
“flash new car” getting a ding, or my favorite: Where
are all the disabled people then if they need these
parks, does NOT give you the right to park in a
space they may need.

Local Love
Not a winge at all, I just thought I should say
something about what I experienced today at
Fergbaker. For somewhere that deals with hundreds
of people a week I am always amazed at the level
of service and quality of product they deliver. I’m
always greeted by a happy face, a great coffee and
more often than I care to admit, a tasty treat.
ASK ME
If you need a hint of which spaces are for the
disabled, it is the ones with the big yellow wheelchair
painted in them and wider parks to enable them to
get out of the car a little easier.
Disabled Advocate
Queenstown has a growing number of families. If
you’re a member of staff in a Queenstown restaurant
chances are that you are going to meet a child or two
or, uh oh, a toddler. My husband and I sometimes
go out for lunch with our two year old. How about
you stop and think before you have a whinge about
people’s children, especially ones who have never
knowingly annoyed anyone in their lives. Restaurant
staff need to act with a bit of understanding and
tolerance and take extra care when carrying food near
children. It’s time to grow up and stop being such a
heartless inconsiderate ***hole.
Mama
Wow Mama, you completely missed the point on
that one. I’m not hating on families, I’m hating on
inconsiderate parents letting their children run round
like nutters while a busy dinner service is in full swing.
It’s YOUR responsibility as a parent to look after
YOUR kids, that’s what being a parent is all about.
If you want to come to a restaurant and chat with
your friends with out a care in the world then either
don’t bring your children or just don’t conceive in
the first place.

RESTAURANT & CAFE GUIDE
Caribe Latin Kitchen
The huge success of a local market stall created a new culinary opportunity for Queenstown’s foodies
which is being embraced by the local community. A smash hit at this year’s Remarkables Market, Caribe
Latin Kitchen is the brainchild of local entrepreneurs Richard Castro, Alfredo Bustamante and Indira
Marin. Drawing on their native Venezuela for inspiration, the long-term locals identified the lack of South
American cuisine in the Queenstown market place as an opportunity to introduce New Zealand to the
taste sensation that is South and Central American food.
Owner Richard Castro cites their best-selling dishes as the Argentinian BBQ, the fresh and spicy salmon
ceviche and the market favourite Arepas. Plans are in place for loyalty cards for Queenstowners keen to
become regulars, and daily lunch specials are proving great value for hungry adventure-seekers.
A high-profile colourful location at the top of the mall means both locals and tourists alike are
enjoying Caribe Latin Cuisine. With the sounds of Salsa, the smells of the Caribbean and the textures
of the Amazon, Caribe Latin Kitchen brings a fusion of colours and flavours to create a unique
experience that has customers coming back for more.
